Grainy Type / Print as Bitmap

Hello,
We've been having an odd issue with Adobe design software and our Brother 4040CDN colour laser printer. When printing type from an Adobe product (namely Illustrator CS5 or InDesign CS5) it appears grainy and not the precise typographic smoothness you expect from a laser printer.
Printing from Microsoft Word or Apple Pages produces beautiful smooth type, so the issue lies presumably somewhere in the Adobe drivers/settings. After much fiddling with the InDesign CS5 settings, I was able to de-select "Print as Bitmap" in the Advanced print settings and the results were beautiful, smooth vector based type:
However, trying this same technique in Illustrator CS5, I am unable to select or de-select the "Print as Bitmap" option:
I've searched for and tried many different solutions to the grainy type issue, but to no avail. Any insight into:
1) Alternate approaches to solve the "grainy type" issue from Adobe products.
2) Forcing the "Print as bitmap" option in Illustrator CS5.
Thanks in advance. Much appreciated.
-Kyle

Printing from Acrobat produces the same result, sadly.
Updated the Brother firmware and reset the Acrobat settings and it seems to printing great now.
Illustrator still prints grainy type. Any ideas on parlaying this success into Illustrator? Thanks.

  • Print a Bitmap to a chosen printer

    Hello all,
One of our customers, has an implementation where some user data are stored as bitmap images on a server. Right now, the user can view those images and then choose to save them on the local PC . Those images are shown at SAP using the ABAP Bitmap Image Processing Class found on this blog
    /people/thomas.jung/blog/2007/09/05/abap-bitmap-image-processing-class
Now the customer, is requesting that the user, instead of saving the file, should be able to print it on a printer that he chooses .
The important part is, that the bitmap file should not be saved first on the user's computer .
To be more specific, what we actually need, is to change this class, with another that will be printing the bitmap instead of saving it .
      CALL METHOD CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_SAVE_DIALOG
       EXPORTING DEFAULT_EXTENSION    = '.bmp'
                 DEFAULT_FILE_NAME    = lv_filename
                 FILE_FILTER          = 'Bitmap files (*.BMP)'
       CHANGING  FILENAME             = lv_filename
                 PATH                 = lv_path
                 FULLPATH             = lv_fullpath.
      CHECK NOT lv_fullpath IS INITIAL.
Is this possible and if so, how ?
    Thank you

    Hi there,
if you have the bitmap in binary format then you can try the following function calls
    RSPO_SR_OPEN
    RSPO_SR_WRITE_BINARY
    RSPO_SR_CLOSE

  • Raster Vector Balance vs Print as bitmap

I'm getting problems frequently when printing where a drop shadow or a clipping mask creates a discoloration on a solid color area of color in the background.
I can eliminate this using Print as Bitmap although it seems to affect the printed colors, is slower and comes out at a lower resolution than when I don't use this option.
My question is -- if I change the Raster/Vector balance in the Custom Flattener presets down to 0 (so everything is Raster), how is this different than using Print As Bitmap?

    Your answer:
Adobe Illustrator is optimized for PostScript printing. When you print from Illustrator to a non PostScript printer, objects may not print, or may print incorrectly.
Non PostScript printing problems can manifest themselves in many different ways, including (but not limited to) the following:
Text or other objects are partially or completely missing from the page.
A system error or freeze occurs.
     Try doing this:
Set Raster/Vector balance to 0 with Print As Bitmap unchecked.
İ think quality will get better.

  • Print as Bitmap to Postscript printers?

Illustrator CS3,CS4 MAC various postscript printers
Is there any possible way to print a file as bitmap to a postscript printer? The option in the Print / Advanced section in illustrator is always greyed out.
I would want to do this in cases where the vector art is too complex to print (locks up the printer, disregards it, postscript errors etc). I can rasterize the problematic artwork first or even use a layer effect however if the option to Print as Bitmap was available for Postscript printers it would save a lot of time.
    Thanks J

You could create a Flattener preset where the Vector Balance slider is set to 0 (the far left). At that setting, the entire artwork is rasterized and effectively prints as an image. Just dial in the resolution you want into the preset as well. You might call the preset "Print as Image" ;-)

  • Cannot print a bitmap in .psd CS4

All of a sudden I can't print a bitmap image in CS4, nor can I view it in print preview. Did I flip a switch?
    Thanks for any help. Mark

Is the PDF embedded in the page (similar to how a Flash movie can be embedded in a page) or is the PDF displayed in the full window?
If the PDF has the full window, you probably need to use the print icon supplied by Adobe Reader. In the version I have, it appears on a toolbar when I float my mouse pointer over the center of the document about 80% of the way down the window. Not as convenient as earlier versions.

  • Image looks great in PS- when I go to print it looks grainy in printer preview dialog box and prints blurry. Why?

Image looks great in PS- when I go to print, it looks grainy in printer preview dialog box and prints blurry.  Why is this happening?

PS CC, Yosemite, Epson 3880 (called espson to make sure it wasn't something with that), saved as a tiff/psdjpg- all files behave the same way.  When I open the raw file- and only crop the image- it behaves this way now- with grain and blur when printing.  No other files do this in the same shoot.  I worked on this image- could something have gotten corrupted along the way such that now even opening the raw file creates this problem.  SInce upgrading my computer -  a window pops up when I open PS that says I need to update my graphics card?? for 3D- I'm not using 3D- so I don't know if that means anything.  I have to leave for about an hour- but greatly appreciate any feedback. I will be in touch. Thank you.

  • New condition type print preview time out.

    Dear all,
    I am a ABAPer.
I am facing one problem in PO Print preview.
My MM consultant defines one new condition type-ZPF5 .
Instead of ZPF2 we are using this condition type- ZPF5.
After that in PO ,Net value & everything coming fine.
There is a smartform also related to this.
I have added all logic related to ZPF5 .
But when going to print preview In production & clicking on print preview,
It is giving time out after 9-10 mint-Time out for ALL po,not only for this condition related .
    v_no = &SFSY-JOBPAGES& -1. "in this line.
&SFSY-JOBPAGES& means " Total number of pages in the currently formatted print request.
    I saw M/08 - ZPF5 Print equal to 'X ' & Statistics is ticked for this.
But when I revert back old SMART FORMS & PRINT = blank, print preview is coming fine for all PO except
ZPF5 Is not affecting in print preview, but in PO affecting.
    Any help from MM side?
    Thanks
    Gourav.

    Dear all,
    Issue resolved.
I have changed my select query & remove old condition from that, now I am using only ZPF5.
    Like :
SELECT SINGLE KBETR KWERT KRECH FROM KONV INTO (V1_KBE,V_PF,V_KREC)
             WHERE KNUMV EQ V_KNUM AND
                   KPOSN EQ WA_MAT-EBELP AND
                   KSCHL EQ 'ZPF5'. " not zpf2
    Thanks all for your time.

  • Photos look great edited in LR 3 but extremely grainy when printed

I said I would take photos at a friends wedding and now I just want to cry.
I edited raw photos in LR3 - they look great in LR. I export them to a folder and they still look great on a large screen. But then I sent them off to print. It wasn't so much the colours that annoyed me it was the grain and sharpening in the photo, it looks terrible. I only realised this after I gave her the photos on disk and she spent money printing 1000 crap photos...
I have never had this issue before. I am just doing a light edit - small crop on some, don't know if its the export process.
I have played around and what seems to work is moving the luminance to close to 85-100 and sharpening to 0. I just want to know is that right do it it that way or am I missing a major thing.
When I do an export from lightroom. Its jpeg format sRGB, quality - 80, resolution 240
This bit I am unsure of...I have ticked sharpen output as set for matte paper, amount - standard.
If anyone could help me out soon I would really appreciate it, as it would save me using a lot of tissues as I am quite frustrated.

    I have attached 3 photos.
When I took the photos I shot as both raw and jpeg. I have attached the following:
    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5ebbdi4o3u14wk3/CZWB8wJcce/Grainy%20Photos?lst
      a.. the original raw photo
b.. the jpeg that came with it (as is out of the camera)
      c.. the final edited jpeg
d.. A screen print of the image uploaded to printing lab (It will look grainy around the hair line...but that's the problem)
I have played around a fair bit. All looks great in LR and when I get out of LR and open them up full screen out of windows explorer they look good too.
It was only when the bride complained about the blurriness, I then tried uploading the final high resolution file to RGB Digital Labs that you could see how bad they were.
Last night I was playing around and I tried uploading the jpeg straight out of the camera to RGB labs and that too was bad. So I am starting to think would it be the camera, but then again when they look so good after editing why would they look bad at print time. Photo was taken at f$ 1/200 shutter speed and ISO 320 (so it’s not like I didn’t have light) I had a flash as well
I think I am going to have a mental breakdown!!!
So far from what I have found to get the picture looking ok  Sharpness is “0”and luminance is set to 100 – so too extremes which just does not seem right, I have never had to do this before.
    Any help would be great
    Thanks
    Sara

  • Output Type - Print Preview issue

    Dear Friends,
I have an Output Type which when seen in the output preview / printing of billing doc shows the PO No. along with the other data.
The Output Type picks up the Sales Order no. from the table VBFA based on the billing doc no. and collects the preceding doc no. This preceding doc i.e. the Sales Order doc no. is then passed in the VBKD table along with the line item no. of the billing doc. and then the PO No. maintained at the item level is picked up from the field BSTKD by matching it with the line item no. of the Sales Order Doc No.
Now, I am facing a problem where when the PO No at the header level and the PO No of all the Item levels are same at the Sales Order doc, the output preview does not display the PO No. in the Output preview / print. This happens with only those sales order doc where the header level PO No. and Item level PO No. are the same. For rest other docs, things are running smooth.
Kindly suggest me with some solution.
    Regards
    Vineet Jain

When business data is the same on header and items, VBKD does not contain any lines for the items - it only contains a single line for the header where the item number is initial.  This fails your logic of looking up VBKD by line numbers.

  • New document type--printing PO

Hi, I created new doc types and I noticed that the POs created under the new doc types did not displayed anything in the Messages (printing).  Do I have to configure the output control? if yes, how? thanks so much!

    Hi
You may not view it in the dropdown list, for message setting whe you are creating the condition record, you select the output type in MN04 (NEU or any other customised out type for PO) , from the key combination when you are selecting Purchasing output determination: Document type and executing , you will find the condition record fields enter your new document type directly instead of selecting it from the drop down. It will pick the details as you wish. There is no configuration required for this.

  • Type prints backwards and compressed

When I try to print a Powerpoint presentation, all of the type compresses into a small square and prints "mirrored." Basically, I get a black ink blob, although I can pick out various letters. The photos print fine. The presentation looks fine when I view it, but in Print Preview, I can see the distortion. I can burn a copy of the presentation and give it to my husband to print on his MacBook and he can view/print it just fine. But I've never been able to print a ppt presentation from this computer since I bought it in October (even presentations that printed fine on my PowerBook G4 previous to that).
I don't know if this is related, but the first day I used this computer, I had a similar problem when I did Google searches online--the type on the lists of websites would compress and distort. Then when I would click on those websites, the type would be almost unreadable, although graphics were unaffected. I don't know why it stopped doing that, but it only lasted the first day.
I paid extra to have the Apple store transition my old data from the G4 when I bought the computer at the end of October (it did not come with Leopard installe. I've also installed Office 2004 twice (both times at the Genius Bar). So I've tried everything to make the transition to Leopard as seamless as possible. I'm stumped. Excel prints fine. Word prints fine. And my keyboard used to freeze constantly, but the most recent OS update seemed to resolve that.

It turned out to be a problem with the driver on my printer. Updating the driver solved the problem.

  • Comment - Paper Types & Printing

Some of you may already be in the know regarding this topic, but it recently became important enough for me to warrant mentioning something to the general public.
I've been struggling since before XMas with print quality out of iPhoto and Aperture. Have since given up on Aperture (trial version anyways) and done most of my work in iPhoto and PSE 4.
I had printed out 80 photos from my honeymoon on HP Photo Paper - which came in my 6-pack of replacement ink cartridges for my HP Photosmart 8250. I was under the assumption that HP would include high-quality compatible paper with their ink package. I wrestled with color/image quality issues out of iPhoto for months, and then this past weekend I purchased some higher-quality HP photo paper and tried that.
The difference in my prints was significant - they were a lot better. I was able to undo digital changes to most pics and just print them out 'straight' and the quality is now great.
Keep in mind that, no matter how long you work on an image on-screen, you will be limited by using lower-quality paper. Go for the good stuff and you'll be happy. Don't walk the same path I did.

    GTCBrown:
I suggest you do what I do and that is to do all your printing from Photoshop Elements. You can set PSE up to manage color, set up the print size and get the most control over your prints that you can have.
I don't know how the HP print window is set up but both Canon and Epson has options for their different types of paper, gloss, high gloss, matte, etc. I've been using Epson's Ultra Premium Presentation Paper, Matte, and find it to be turning the best prints I've ever make. They look better than some professional photographer prints that we got recently.
Here's how you can use PSE to edit photos from within iPhoto and then just stay in PSE to do the printing.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
