Grammar Check is Overzealous About Gender

I am a writer by profession and dumped Word for Pages at the beginning of this year.  I'm a happy user, but certain grammar suggestions are just annoying.  Marking the word 'husband' or 'wife' as being too gender specific, in a context where it's necessary to be specific is one pet peeve.  It would be nice if one could permanently ignore certain suggestions, or just disable certain parts of the grammar check.

You have to tell Apple. We who respond here are only end users like you and can't change a thing.

  • New grammar checker

This'll make the folks who do a lot of writing happy: Apple has finally implemented a grammar checker in Pages '08. Here's how they describe it:
    *Proofreading Documents*
    - You can set the Proofreader to flag writing errors as you type, or you can check your entire document or selected text at any time.
    - Proofreading identifies the following types of writing errors:
    - Improper capitalization
    - Punctuation errors (for example, inconsistent spacing around dashes)
    - Duplicated words
    - Overly complex word choices (for example, “eventuate” instead of “take place”)
    - Formatting errors (for example, abbreviations that should be spelled out in formal writing)
    - Parts-of-speech errors (for example, using “an” instead of “a”)
    - Jargon
    - Misspellings
    - Gender-specific expressions
    -Dennis

Peggy, I think the reason it feels better than Word's grammar checking is because it doesn't try to do too much. In fact I don't think it is doing grammar at all - from my testing it seems to parse words/phrases, capitalization and punctuation. It clues in on overused/misused words and phrases, finds uncapitalized words immediately after periods, exclamations, and question marks, and tries to enforce US rules about punctuation...hm, wonder if it does British rules if British English is the default language? At any rate, while I have grammar checking turned off in Word, I've found the proofreading feature to be useful and not-annoying.

  • Change language for Grammar Check

    Hi folks,
How do I change the language for the grammar check? Manchmal schreibe ich auf Deutsch ou en Français and in these cases I would really appreciate the grammar checking.
MS Word (on Windows anyway) will even detect the language being written after about three words or so and switch. Can I get this on the Mac (the behavior, not MS Word)?
    Thanks!
Regards / mit Freundlichen Grüßen / Cordialement,
    Eric

    Hi Tom,
thanks for your reply. I suppose I can use Word & Entourage for mail & that will give me the builtin grammar checking à là windows. I was hoping for a more indigenous solution but this will do fine.
Of course, I could always endeavor to improve my German and French grammar, but that's another story!!!
    Kind regards,
    Eric

  • Best grammar checker for English.

I am looking for a grammar checker for English. I know it will never be perfect but it can help me by pointing out a possible mistake I have to consider. The best free tool for this seems to be the one of Abiword that exists nowhere else (as far as I know). I have tried LanguageTool but it misses obvious errors like this one:
“It does not see this mistakes.”
    (Wrong plural form for mistake).
Any suggestion? It would be nice if at least others look at what Abiword has done. Abiword only signal a possible error without trying to correct it but is already something valuable.

olive wrote:One of the reason I want a grammar checker is to write on these forums and obviously, I won't submit every posts I make for proofreading.
    Understood.
Just a suggestion: if you're open to being corrected here, you could add something to your signature along those lines. Some people do.
I am a native French speaker and I have a commercial grammar checker for French that is able to correct about 90% of grammar mistakes and tell something stupid about 10% of the time. This is commercial and rather expensive, but it shows what is technically possible.
Technically possible? Maybe for French, but that doesn't say much about English. (I don't speak French, so I will consider generalities that apply to both Spanish and Latin.) Since English verbs typically come in only four-ish forms (walk, walks, walked, walking) and many words can be either nouns or verbs as the situation demands ("walk/walks" being a good example, but "mistake", from your first post, is another), there is a lot of room for ambiguity that software simply can't resolve.
Consider the sentence you used earlier, "It does not see this mistakes". An intelligent audience would probably realize "this mistakes" was meant to be a noun phrase and suggest "this mistake" (or "these mistakes"), but grammatically, "this mistakes" could be a (somewhat awkward) relative clause with "mistakes" being a verb and "this" a pronoun. Compare "I do not think it understands", in which "it understands" is the relative clause. If I read it that way, the "correction" becomes wrong.
True, it's unlikely that a real person would use "mistake" like that, but the point is, you can't disambiguate that sentence based purely on syntax; you have to have some idea what it means. And you need a lot of that semantic knowledge in order to spot errors 90% of the time.
My opinion of these tools is that they are very useful if you know how to use them; that is at each suggestion, think about twice and accept the correction if you know the software is right.
My experience has been that every single time a grammar checker "corrects" me, I am right and the software is wrong.[1] That's likely not true for everyone. But with sentences like the example above, you might just be running into the limit of what's possible to check, with existing technology, without throwing perfectly good English under the bus. I doubt there is any tool that checks English grammar with more than 50% accuracy.
[1] This is not quite fair. I have made subtle grammatical mistakes and found them because of grammar checkers. Nevertheless, the software invariably suggests "fixing" it in a way that either changes the meaning or actually makes the rest of the sentence un-grammatical.

  • Grammar Checker API ?

    Hi guys,
I've been posting on the forum but nobody seems to have seen my post :- Should be a better idea to post here I think :)
I am looking for a Grammar Checker API. I look on the web and didn't really found something interesting. A bit like the one on this forum v_v
Anyone knows where I could found something that could be useful/interresting ?
    Thanx =)

    I now....but I took a chance :)
Actuallly, at my job, we would like to include a grammar checker in one of our internal web-application.
We were wandering if something was already existing.
We are looking for something or something relatively cheap for the price. A Grammar Checker is not an obligation for us....we are only looking to see if something free already exists and could be re-use fairly easily.
But if we found nothing, it doesn't really matter =) I'll check for that OO stuff. If you have anymore link/infos/doc about that, please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated :)
    Thanx again !

  • Disable autocorrect and spelling/grammar check features with Computer GPO

We have two classrooms that need to have all the autocorrect and spelling and grammar check disabled.  I know there is a way to do it by a user GPO, but is it possible to do it by computer (with a registry change, etc)?  We can't do it by user
because outside of the class the students will need these autocorrect options for typing papers and such.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry that it's been a while since I posted on this topic, but I am just now having to revisit this issue.  I tried just pushing out the registry entries though a GPO, but I have been told it is not working.  I tried creating a Startup script
    option, as in this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2007/08/14/deploying-custom-registry-changes-through-group-policy.aspx
But it will not run.  The script itself works, as I have tested it manually.  I will include the body of the registry settings below.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have tried all the suggestions in this link "http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/22621-office-2010-spell-checker-not-working"
but it still gives me there error that "there is not enough memory or diskspace to run the grammar checker". Does not work in safe mode either nor do so I have the repair option from control panel.
I also renamed normal.dotm, and used ccleaner to clear all temp files..... Didn't work. Any ideas?

    Hi,
If you are using 64-bit Office, make sure you also use 64-bit bit Proofing Tools. Refer to this thread below and probably it may be the cause in your scenario:

  • No grammar check?

I like pages and find it has yet to crash - something Word for Mac does all the time when I'm using it. However, I'm really frustrated by the spell check (seems very limited and doesn't pick up as many mistakes as Word in my view) and the fact there is no grammar check option.
At the moment, I am exporting my documents as a Word file, simply to do a grammar and spell check (as this tool is far superior in Word) and then opening it back up in Pages and saving it as a Pages file again. Does anybody know of any plan to improve this or a faster work around? Seems quite a basic thing to me!
Also, why are pages preferences so limited?
Silly question I know - but it's been bugging me!
    Ant

    Hi Ant-
There's simply no grammar check. I'm not sure how you think the Word spell checker is better, but if you think it is... fine.
With Pages I have grown accustomed to being a slightly more careful typist (such as NOt DOing TWo INitial caps, or capitalizing the beginnings of sentences). Word fixes these things with auto correct, but at the cost of making me use an extremely crashy Microsoft application.
Word's grammar may help for some things, but cannot be relied on. This article describes some problems with Word's grammar checker:
