Graphic Anomalies, Freezing Yosemite

Hello This issue presented it self some time ago prior to yosemite, Maybe Maverics but lots of people had issues with MT Lion. I recall an update at some point and the issue was gone.. Since Yosemite it has been Back.. Typically I'm just browsing with safari, and ill get blocks, pixels random on the screen they flicker, then eventually freezes i have let it sit and then have gotten white screen that flickers or partial white screen flickers in and out from Wall paper image to white screen. i do have little video of it as well. Etre info is below of al the other things i have read i feel its graphic driver related.. I do have time machine back up from back in 6/2014 and some earlier which was prior to yosemite so i am thinking of going back to that but wondering if any other viable solution? I have sent multiple feedback through the feedback assistant as well to apple. but seemed they were quite slow on this issue few years ago
Problem description:
Graphic issues blocks, pixels freezing and white screen flashing forced to hard reboot

Tough to say what is going on, first thing I'd recommend is seeing if there is an update for 10.10.3, there was an update for it shortly after 10.10.3 was released. Your system has been heavily customized as evidenced by all the Internet Plugins you have added, verify all are up-to-date.. It also has some out-of-date software that should either be updated or uninstalled.
If after updating the graphic anomalies still occur then run Apple's Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. The reason to run it multiple times back to back is AHT does not always find errors after the first or second pass,  however when it does they are correct. It is possible your GPU is failing. In order to know for sure, you really need to have the machine serviced by an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) who have the proper diagnostic tools to tell. AHT is all you have, it's just not as comprehensive (or accurate) as what the pros have.

  • 2009 Mac Pro - Graphics Glitches/Freezing in Yosemite

    Hi,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro that is running 10.10.1. It is using a Radeon 4870 still from the factory. I have had a mostly flawless experience in the last 5 years with the system, but it has lately been displaying graphical problems and then freezing completely. After the display does quirky stuff that I am attaching in the image, I can only move the cursor. No other actions can be performed, and the only option I have is a hard shutdown with the power button. Usually after I do this, the machine will boot with the chime, but no startup screen will ever appear. It just sets blank. The only way I have found around this is to hold the option key, then boot to my primary drive.
I notice this seems to happen after the computer has woken from sleep. But, the issue originally appeared for the first time after updating to the newest Logitech Control panel for my mouse. I thought it was that, so I removed it and am no longer using that at all. The issue still exists.
Here is an image of what the screen typically does.

    My condolences.
    Time for a new GPU.

  • Computer not responding to Graphics Card/Freezes up in Games

    Hello All.
Recently I've updated my Drivers, and almost everygame I've played has just been freezing after 10 Mins of gameplay. It stay's on the screen for about 2 Mins, then closes off along with the app it was running on (Steam). Before i had updated my drivers, everything was fine. I've tried to downgrade the Catayst and I've tried to roll back the driver's for the Video Card, but it wont work no matter what. After 3 days, I once again uninstall AMD Catalyst, and now my graphic card won't work. I would reset the computer many times just for the Monitor to get signal, but once more, it was a failure. I'm begging for help here, and if anybody can help me, I commend you! So please, please, please, please, help me, thank you, and have a wonderful day!

  • Mac Book Pro 13 inch Graphics Issue with Yosemite

    I have a major graphics issue with my Mac Book Pro mid 2010 after upgrading to Yosemite. I have a 2.66ghz with 8gb memory and 320M 256 MB NVIDIA graphics card. Since upgrading to Yosemite (after a clean install) I have had the following issue that are driving me crazy;
When I use more than one program my screen displays large blocks of unrecognisable fuzziness. I have two screen working off my Mac Book Pro, one is the Apple 27 inch theatre screen.
My system works slow despite have ample free memory available on my disk (over 150gb)
    It is becoming an increasing concern as this issue builds up over the day to the point where I need to reboot to fix, however as soon as I use Photoshop the system almost grinds to a halt. Other issues that are bearable but ned addressing include;
Keyboard often does not work on startup and requires you to pull out the keyboard and reconnect (intermittent).
Lost email when sent (intermittent). I had hoped that this would be fixed in this updated release.
    Laggy behaviour in general.
I am hoping someone has an idea to fix these issues or are also sharing my frustration. Can someone suggest  fix as this is not a workable situation for Mac book Pro users and 2010 is not that of an old computer. Apple???

So you erased your drive and installed  10.10 and then 10.10.1 and everything else was t hrough Setup Assistant, through reinstalls, or through TimeMachine restore?
A four-year old laptop may be at the point where that small older gpu and processors have more trouble.
you might want to hold off and go back to Mavericks or whatever you had - hopefully you cloned that system before doing clean install, upgrade to 16GB, maybe throw in an SSD... or save and get the next MacBook Pro to come out.
And you checked your apps at http://www.roaringapps.com for compatibility.
Might help just to see what if anything shows up in output from Etrecheck.
Probably thought this was laptop MacBook Pro, it is not, probably best moved to Yosemite forum.

  • I'm having a graphics glitch in Yosemite.

    Hi,
I just installed the update for Yosemite OS (10.10.1) on my 2013 MacBook Air, and my screen graphics started going weird. This is the first problem I've really encountered with Yosemite. The most the graphics effects is Google Chrome, I cannot scroll as the display becomes so bad it is unable to read the screen. The glitch also slightly occurs when swiping between full screen desktop modes. Any suggestions? I've already turned off "Reduce Transparency" in Accessibility, and it has done absolutely nothing.
This is extremely frustrating! Someone help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Late 2013, 27" 3.2GHz iMac random "graphics" errors with Yosemite

Since upgrading to Yosemite I am encountering random "graphics errors".
Sometimes happens with an Apple report, some times without.
In some cases, it causes a logout (not reboot or kernel panic).  After logging
back in the small "graphics error" box is there.
It is always happening at least once during a browsing session in Safari, often
more.  It is also not website dependent as going back and reloading the pages where
the problem occurred will work without the problem.
With Mail, it is even worse.  Simply getting email is not a problem.  It happens
if multiple apps are open and I try to create a Mail message.  This is when
I get the sudden logout situation.  The only way I can compose an email
is to close all other apps.
Memory is NOT an issue as I have 24GB installed.
Anyone having the same issues or clues as to how to fix????
NOTE:  Everything works flawlessly and as it should if I boot into
                 Mavericks.

same problem here screen random glitches while surfing the web with macbook pro retina 13 late 24 model. Just graphic issues *for example i may zoom in  photo on the web and it may appear a random line or glitch) yosemite is really bad

  • Illustrator CS6 and Graphic Styles (Freezing)

Hi everyone, I'm on a Mac and have Illustrator CS6. Whenever I try to open up Graphic Styles, it freezes.
I deleted preferences and even did the disk permissions repair, then restarted. Nothing. I tried to create multiple types of documents too (print, web, etc), but whenever I try to open styles after creating that document, it freezes.
These are the vanilla default graphic styles, mind you.
It might freeze for other tools, but I'm not sure, haven't gotten that far in the investigation. Would anyone happen to have any ideas? :/ Thanks!!

Just got this issue (yet again). I tried something I use to fix certain Bridge glitches - unmount any disk called USERS. I don't know why, but my Adobe programs don't like disks with this name. Then, when you click on graphic styles, give it like, 30sec - 2min to load. You can even just browse the interwebs. The AI icon on your toolbar will bounce when it's loaded up and ready to use again. Also, make sure the Graphic Styles aren't displayed when you close the file, or it can be hell to re-open it at all. Don't know why, but I had this same problem with CS5.
Let me know if it works!!

  • Start-up error: Fuzzy graphics then freezing

    Hi Guys,
I've had my lovely iMac for about a year and a half now, and everything's been fine until recently...
My iMac is having issues starting up properly. Every time I turn it on there's all these funny graphics errors all over the screen, small orange horizontal lines flashing about at random. When the grey apple logo appears that tends to be jittering about as well, all in all looking like some mad graphics error.
However it's still starting up at this point. It usually gets to the log-in screen and then freezes before I can type my password in. If not then, I can type in my password then it'll freeze when I click Ok.
I have to hold the off button to turn it off and restart. Typically after 3 or 4 times of repeating this it works perfectly normal and the Mac seems to know nothing of it happening (no error logs that I can find).
I'm not entirely sure, but it seems to of happened quite recently after I installed 10.4.7 through Software update (no problems with downloading or installing it) - but it's also worth noting that I installed another 1GB of RAM about a month ago, but it was fine until recently.
I've (annoyingly) lost my Hardware Test CD, so I can't tell if it is Hardware issues or Software.
I just think it's odd that it works after a while...
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Welcome to the discussions!
It really sounds to me that you have a bad video board. Since you do not have the CD to run the test I would take it in to your Apple Store.
Before you do that, check to see if you are covered under the Repair Extention Program. You iMac is the right vintage to be one of the ones effected. Mine was so I took it in and had it back with a new midplane and power supply in just three days. No problems since.

  • Graphics nightmare after Yosemite upgrade on Macbook Pro and iMac

I have upgraded my 2013 iMac and my 2012 Macbook Pro Retina to Yosemite.
I am getting endless graphics glitches and crashes on both machine on all programs.
I've attached a screen shot from my Macbook Pro today.
I have updated the NVIDIA drivers on both machine and no difference.
Any help appreciated as I don't want to revert back to Mavericks (which was perfect)
    Thanks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Satellite A500 Issues (graphics Card freezes when Gaming)

Hi Everyone hoping you can help!!
I recently purchased my Satellite A500 Laptop and I have 2 extremley bad issues!!!
Firstly apparently my model number doesnt exist it is PSAM3A-04100E which is proving to be a right royal pain in the preverbial when it comes to upgrading to windows 7!
    Secondly is my major issue,
I do a lot of gaming (sims 3, Callof Duty that sort of thing...) and whenever I am playing I think wow this is great excellent fps great graphics and then FREEZE!!! my computer completley locks up and shuts down, no warning signs of lagging slowing down or anything and it does it constantly!!!
I was wondering if anyone else is suffering from this problem or whether I look should look for a driver update I have searched around but cant seem to find it anywhere.
I dont really want to take it back to the shop because then I wont have a compuer for weeks!
Any help would be massively appreciated,
    Many thanks
    Tasman

    >PSAM3A-04100E
Where you bought your notebook? What is the country of purchase?
    New Zealand maybe?
Please visit http://www.toshiba.com.au/ > New Zealand and you should find your notebook model there but as I can see Win7 drivers are not available at the moment.
Next week I will get my Satellite A500 and I will test it with Call of Duty 4 and let you know how it works.
Anyway before you start the game stop all useless running processes and set power plan to full power. Be also sure your notebook can take a breath and cooling fans are not blocked somehow. Put also back side of your notebook on two CD boxes to have higher distance between notebook and the desk.
I hope everything will works well.

  • 10.5.2 and geforce 730 graphics card - graphical errors & freezes

    Hi there!
I am writing this on behalfof a good friend, who is experiencing computer troubles, since updating to 10.5.2, specifically the graphics update.
    +His machine specs: 24' iMac G5, purchased November 2006 - without apple care.+
He has noted system freezes, and strange graphical errors, such as black lines and squares, since updating his system several days ago.
No steps have been taken as of yet, apart from the norm of clearing caches, restarting, and repairing permissions etc, which have not helped unfortunately.
As the errors are being output graphically, he believes the problem to be the *geforce 730* graphics card, which allegedly has a reputation.
Could you possibly help me please; have you experienced similar, what are his options, is this unit replaceable and at what cost, etc?
Although he does not have apple care, do apple have a responsibility to him, as it's a hardware failure, on a machine not even a year and a half old!
Thanks so much in advance of your help, and I'll keep searching in the mean time

I have the same issue, although I am running 10.4.11, ATI Radeon X1600
    Welcome to Discussions, SGiambalvo!
With all due respect, you'd get more, and better, advice from starting your own thread or looking at Tiger related threads. Those with similar experience to yours may just skip reading this thread.
Seems to be a hardware issue.
First things everyone will want to know are:
    1. is the iMac's firmware up-to-date? There were two. Refer to this Apple Support article: Firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
    2. the result, or not, from running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test (located on your iMac's grey system Install Disc)?
    3. when did this start, has it gotten worse, if sudden was there an event that was a coincidence?
    4. if you have AppleCare, what did they say when you called?
got a 'grey screen of death'
If it was the message to restart your Mac, that's a kernel panic. Can be due to hardware or software problem.
the video card updates seem to only be for Aluminum iMacs...so I have not downloaded this pack
Don't bother with it, as it will not allow an install after you've downloaded it.
While your problem may very well be the video card or logic board, it could be the hard drive going out. Regardless which, you'll of course want to backup all important data immediately.

  • SDD and HDD external drives freeze yosemite

I have bought two mac mini 1tb computers to replace my Windows PC's, intending to use Samsung SDD external drives to run my main data.   All working ok for around 10 mins, then Yosemite freezes.  No mouse movement.  It was happening occasionally with a Samsun external HDD drive, but that seems to have cleared.  The mouse did freeze for a moment today.
This problem seems to be everywhere on the net.   Does anyone know of any fixes on the horizon.  This has completely scuppered the system I was intending to set up.
Any advice or news about a fix for these problems would be appreciated.  I am new to Apple's and this is my first major hitch.
    Barry

If these are new current generation Mac mini's, then they have USB3 support.  You can look at Applications -> Utilities -> System Information -> USB -> Speed, and that should tell you if it is USB2 or 3.  A USB2 will have a speed of "Up to 480 Mb/sec", and USB3 will be much MUCH faster.
I have not noticed complaints about wireless keyboards causing problems, but I suppose it is possible if the keyboard is sending junk signals to the Bluetooth interface which then gets dumped onto either a USB bus (or at least my System Information -> USB shows it hosting the Bluetooth adapter).  AND I do know that broken USB devices have be responsible for all kinds of problems on Macs.  This is one of the reasons I suggested disconnecting and swapping out devices and cables to see if the problem went away.
I hope that your Mac mini(s) continue to behave themselves going forward.
It doesn't solve the SDD situation though.  From what I have read Apple have no intention of allowing 3rd party SDD drives to work on their latest operating system, which seems really retro and surprising.
Are you talking about the lack of TRIM support for 3rd party SSDs?
TRIM support is nice, but it is not essential.  Also I do not know if the USB bus interface allows low level SSD commands to be sent over the bus (I really do not know).
I would expect an SSD in an external enclosure to maintain a sufficient quantity of spare sectors to allow the SSD to keep ahead of most writes by pre-clearing the spares in anticipation of future writes.
All that TRIM does is allow the file system to tell the SSD that sectors from a deleted file are available to be pre-cleared.  If the SSD is configured with a sufficient number of spares this should not be a problem.
I really appreciate everyone's help here.  I am a Mac newbie and in new territories, so learning fast.  I had this 'myth' in my head that Apple MUST be really neat and friendly and seamless, but it seems they may be prone to the same corporate shennanigins as all the others.  What a pity.
For the general user, Macs offer an easy to use experience where you use it as a means to get something done, and not as something you have to spends times doing maintenance tasks on.
However, that simplified approach often drives power users nuts, as it removes a lot of flexibility.  So the Power User needs to find alternate solutions.
I know people that are hardcore Linux Geeks, and Windows devotees that will recommend Macs for their non-technical family members, as it means less support calls which you cannot refuse (and it is really a pain to have to drive 300 miles to that family member's home to do the support).  A Mac at that family members house saves them frustrations.
