Graphic Card general question

As you can tell by my question, I'm not to computer savvy, but I'm trying to learn.
I am wondering just what does the Graphic Card do, and what kind of performance increase can I expected from an upgrade ? I'm currently using the one that can with my G4 867. here is what is listed in the system profiler.

I not bashing PC , but the fact is many of my friends have gotten new PC's twice since then , and my G4 still out performs entry level Dells.

My machine is 10+ now.
With CS 2 and older versions of Final Cut, you could get along pretty well with a $250 graphics upgrade (flashed Geforce 7800GS).
I get along with CS2 quite well in my 2.0GHz Sawtooth, as well as a 933MHz Quicksiver 2002 with a Geforce 6800GT.
I don't use Final Cut, but, any video encoding on either machine, is an overnight and then some process.
Editing is fine, just the encoding.
Your machine would be similar to the QS in performance, and the 7800GS is a more powerful card (the 6800GT is cheaper, but it won't work in MDD machines).
Problem is, you said something about WoW.
With any online gaming or video, the CPU is more at play than the graphics card.
A graphics card will help some, but CPU is more important.
Besides, $250 for an upgrade is a good downpayment on a new machine.
Graphics upgrades aren't very cheap, especially if the upgrade is to have impact.
the MAC was the standard with most pro-audio , and OSX looked so nice.
OS X is sweet.
It works like an OS should.

Im looking to purchase one of the newer Mac Pro models and was wondering if I were to buy a differnt graphics card (ex: Geforce GX2 9800) what kind of problems would incouter or would i have to make any modifications or software tweaks? Would i see a difference in performance in OSX as i would with windows?
A general guide to swapping GPU's would be nice, cant really get a straight answer with the search.

Z68A-GD80-G3 - installing radeon 6990 graphics card - noob question

all, apologies for the noob question, but: how exactly do i install a radeon 6990 graphics card?
i have a Enermax ERV1250EGT power supply. the card is in the top blue pcie slot. i have connected the PCI-E 2.0 6+2 (8)Pin connectors (see http://www.enermax.co.uk/revolution85 - connectors tab, sorry no direct link but they are the red ones to be seen in the the bottom left corner of the picture: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviewimages/enermax_revolution_1250w/thumbs/10.jpg, i.e. 6 pin + 2 pin = 8 pin).
the card will just not start, i.e. when i boot the pc nothing happens. it works fine without and works fine with my old graphics card (gtx 260).

any ideas? is there anything different to this card than with other cards? have installed systems over the past 10 years and never had an issue until now.

Graphics card upgrade question on the Satellite P10-802

Hoping someone out there may be able to offer some advice.
I'm now finding I probably need to upgrade this system a little. Adding memory looks straight forward but was also interested in upgrading the graphics card. Does anyone know if this is possible? Currently it has the ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 with 64MB of memory. If it is not possible to change the card is it possible instead to increase the memory on the card itself?

No, something like that is definitely not possible.
Please do not mix the notebook technology with the simple desktop PC.
You cannot upgrade the notebook graphic card and you cannot increase this graphic card memory.
Nothing to do :(

Your PC is spec'd with a 300 watt power supply. Unplug your PC and open it up. Read the label on the power supply. What is the total wattage and the 12+ volt amperage? Also, is the slot next to the video card (PCI-E x16 slot) open? The e9920y specifications and motherboard.
If your PC only has a 300 watt power supply, then depending on the 12+ volt amperage you have limited choices of video graphics cards without replacing the power supply. You probably can get the NVIDIA Geforce 220 GT to work but nothing faster. For a gamer, the GT 220 is not the best choice but it's faster than your ATI Radeon HD 4350. At this point, you will need to replace the power supply and install a new video card if your want something faster.
Review the ATI and NVIDIA performance specifications. Look at the memory bandwidth specifications and the DirectX level support.

How to get better in the print world (Graphic Design general question.)

I wasn't really sure where to post this so; I decided the general section would be nice.
Here's the thing: I know how to use Photshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Indesign (and other adobe programs) HOWEVER what I don't know or am never really sure on is Print.
I always see a job every now and then that requires you to be print ready or have print experience.
All I know about printing is bleed (usually for business cards) and that CMYK is for printing.
So my question is: What can I do to be professional in printing? Mostly everything I do is for the web.

HP Pavilion p7-1207c graphics card upgrade question

Hi, I currently own a HP Pavilion p7-1207c and I play NBA 2K15 on low settings at 1600x900 and average only about 25 maybe 30 if I get lucky. The card I plan on upgrading to is either the GT 630 or the GT 730. My question is if my motherboard would support either of these cards and will I see a increase of framerates in 2K15? I have tried finding a BIOS update on my computer HP's page, couldn't find any. I was just wondering if the GT 730 would be compatible with my PC.

There is no BIOS update for the computer. HP doesn't develop them after the computer is over a year old.
Yes, the GT 730 is compatible with your motherboard. However, I can't tell you for certain if it will provide more FPS.

Graphic card update question

ok i have been using the oem gt 220 for quite some time and need to update it. Something I should have thought about before buying the computer, but nontheless I have some immediate concerns. I plan on updating to a 600 series nvidia card.
While the the majority of the cards do not use much more power then the one I have now, ( for example an extra 10 watts) is buying a new power supply an immediate concern?
I have no idea what concerns I should have about the motherboard. Are the slimline models that different now then they were in 2010?
Upgrading from a small form card to dual slot card concerns me also. As of right now I have to have the side open with a large fan on it for my oem card! What are some concerns I should be thinking about when replacing it with a dual slot card!!!
I'm not going to be able to afford any newer gtx model or even a lower grade gtx, amd, or raideon. A small upgrade is all i want to do.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP makes many models of computers that are all different. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.

Mac Pro Early 2008 Graphics Card Update Questions

Hi there
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Lion with one ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB GPU.
I'm planning on updating it but I'm not sure if I can stick any PCIe GPU or if I need to get a "Mac version". I can't find any clear info on "Mac specific GPU's"
Is there any list of compatible devices out there besides these two?

You need to ask ASUS if the ASUS GTX 770 will run in a non-ASUS motherboard that has a non-UEFI BIOS.

What graphics cards does the original Mac Pro support?

I am thinking about buying a used original 2007 Mac Pro. This Mac Pro would not come with a graphics card, so I am obviously responsible for finding one for it. I found a Radeon HD 5770 that I like on Newegg, and want to know if it would work with the Mac Pro. I really can't imagine it not, but don't want to toss a piece of hardware in my new machine that won't work.

Apple's 5770 $249 for now is the 'safe' but not best in price and whether you want to run OS X ____ ? limits you also, so unless you run 10.6.5 or Lion even the 5770 is out

Speaker problem with t420i and adding a new graphics card question

I bought a t420i about a month ago and noticed that the speakers could not properly handle muliple sounds at once. What happens is that, say in a music video, the music plays loud and clear, but once the lyrics start the background music fades a bit to about 85% of it's original volume. I had returned the laptop because of this problem but the replacement I got has the SAME exact problem.
In case im not clear, try this example. You know the beeping noise you get when you press an incompatible set of keys? ( like g, h, and b). When I have this noise going simultaneously with a song, the song's sound fades a bit.
This does not happen with headphones, therefore i believe the problem is with the way the speakers are programmed.
Also, if I bought a t420 with just integrated graphics, could I still add a new graphics card? Or can you only add a new graphics card to a thinkpad that initially comes with discrete graphics?

I think the main purpose of the nvs4200m is the ability to use three displays (internal + 2 external). Additionally, nVidia has better driver support for games so even though it is around the same speed, the drivers are better.
The shared ram is still used, unless you disable the HD3000 in the BIOS and run with only the nvs4200m at all times.

and i have macbook 2010 and i upgraded from 2gb to 8gb and my graphic card didnt upgraded why ? its still 256mb

K430 Graphic Card question -

Hello Community,
I purchased the new Ideacentre K430 i7 3770. My unit has a HD Radeon 7750 Graphic card. My probloem and question is:
the graphic card has only a HDMI and a VGA ports. I desperately need Dual Link DVI. Of couse I thought that it would have DVI because I believed that all new Graphic cards had DVI or Displayport. I was shocked when I got it home and ther was only HDMI and an old VGA port.
I have the RZ30W high end "30 monitor from HP and it only has Dual link DVI and Displayport. Any tips, I can't seem to find an adaptor from HDMI to Dual Link DVI? I have tried 2 and both were single link and did not work.
Can I have Lenovo trade out the Graphic card for the same one but with the ports I need???
Oddly, I am unable to find the HD Radeon 7750 with my port configuration--- they always seem top come with the ports I need. That is why I bought it !!!!!

Hey There, what it seems like to me, is you need to download your video drivers from the website. Just go to the Support & Drivers page, put in your product, and download/install the video driver. And That should take care of your issue.

Question re: New Mac mini graphics card...

The Apple tech specs on the Mac mini re: the graphics card says:
"NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory

Does this mean that the card will use more memory ig there's 2gb installed in the Mac mini or does it actually mean it's a different card?
In other words, if I buy the lower end Mac mini but upgrade it to 2gb, is that basically the same thing, videocard-wise?

The language and specs are very ambiguous. That said, the language we do have states:
"Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 128MB for 1GB configuration and 256MB for 2GB configuration."
The word 'minimum' contradicts your 'only be able to take' (read: maximum).
What it implies is that the minimum amount of Shared RAM used by the GPU is solely based on the amount of RAM (25% maybe?). Then the question becomes: Why two configurations with two different model numbers? Is it simply to track different price points? If you custom configure the lower cost config to match the higher cost config, it's more expensive.
We definitely need further explanation from Apple.
