Graphic Converter tries unsuccessfully to open my WMV Download

How can I get the Graphic Converter Application to get its hands off of my WMV download? I try and open the downloaded file and it comes up as broken with a page of programming info (unreadable letters). I think that someone (my nephew) must have tried to open the new download with this application for some reason.

Change the default "Open With" application via the Get Info window of Finder.
Highlight a .wmv file, Get Info and change the default back to your assigned app.

  • Graphic converter as default to open media player - why?

Certain downloaded media files can only be opened by first going through graphic converter as the designated default. I want to completely by pass graphic converter (don't understand its value in this instance) and have the downloaded file upon via Real Player (including alias in dock).
I guess the place to start is to un-default graphic converter - but how? Nothing in the apps preferences that suggest how or the user's manual.
    Any help appreciated

    Hi McThomas...
You can change the application associated with a file using the Info window.
    1. Select a document in the Finder.
    2. Choose File > Get Info (Command-I).
    3. In the Info window, click the "Open with" disclosure triangle.
    4. Choose an application from the "Open with" pop-up menu.
The next time the selected file is opened in the Finder, it will be opened with the chosen application.
    5. If you want all files of the same type to be opened with the chosen application, click Change All.
When making changes to a specific file, the change is stored in the file itself. When using the Change All button, it updates the binding for the active user, and stores it in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. In other words, if one user changes the application association for a specific set of files, those changes do not affect other users on the computer.
Why Graphic Converter is set to open audio files, I have no idea, but i might just be a corrupt cache file. Therefore If you need to reset the system-wide bindings, discard the database (named com.apple.LaunchServices-userID-based value.csstore) from /Library/Caches and restart the computer. You can delete the user-set bindings file as well.

  • Graphic Converter insisting on opening WMV files

I'm trying to access wmv files, but even after downloading the Windows Media Player and Stuffit, my Graphic Converter keeps trying to open the files, and it CAN'T!! I just keep getting boxes of codes appearing on my screen. Do I need to get rid of Graphic Converter or is there a better solution? Thank you, in advance, for any help you can offer.
    Tara

    I don't think you're quite on target.
Locate a .wmv movie file in the Finder. Select the file with the mouse and press COMMAND-I. That should open the Get Info window. Alternatively, use the Get Info menu selection in the Finder's File menu. Then locate the section labeled Open With. You may need to click on the little arrow on the side to open the section. Proceed as previously instructed.

Hello; I am using Numbers '09 version 2.1 (436). I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade at one point. Now can't open existing documents. Message "The index.xml file is missing". How can I correct this ?
    Thank you
    Tom

I't not iWeb that got damaged but the domain file. The index.xml file is inside the domain.sites file that's located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Do you have a backup of that file you can revert to?  If so then do it.  Otherwise a long shot but try the following:
    close iWeb.
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • How to convert Graphic-Converter of AppleWorks in Pages?

    Hi
I d'like to upgrade to OS X Lion. I know, that I can open AppleWorks-Docs with Pages. But I have made many docs with the Graphic-Converter (fractions, roots etc.). These elements cannot be edited by Pages.
    What can I do?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Thanks, Roger
I ment the Equation Editor. I tried to write a fraction in the Equation Editor of AppleWorks and to paste it into a Pages-Doc, but I made it with OS 6. It worked, but  it's not possible to edit the fraction anymore. I don't know, if the Equation Editor will still run in OS 7. I could use the Equation Editor of Word. So I have at least the possibility to create new terms.
Or do you see an other possibility?
    Kind regards
    Christian

Send it to me. I'll save it as an EPS file for you.

  • Trying to re-open Photoshop 12

I have spent the last two days trying to re-open this trial software that is Photoshop 12.  Not only am I not that impressed with the software to begin with, especially the graphics and ergonomics, but I've spent hours going in circles trying to re-open the already created file on the desktop; nothing happens.  I've tried deleting all files and starting fresh but I continually get a response of the file being open in another location.  Making me wonder if I want to buy the full version.  And why is this question section only one line, with new letters being hidden behind 'Submit Question', and a saving icon constantly flashing while I type?  A quick response to the main question would be appreciated.  Hopefully Adobe won't transport me to another section where I have to type this all over again.

This is a forum, not a life support. People do live in different timezones across the globe and the occasional bit of sleep is okay, don't you think?! That aside you have not provided even the most basic technical info like system info, so how do you expect people to even begin to guess?

  • Possible to convert ordinary accounts to Open Directory accounts?

This might be a naive question. But I need to set up accounts for users on this Mac Pro configured with Leopard Server and they may need to be Open Directory accounts, i.e. we may decide to create portable accounts for the whole cluster and have them hosted on this server. I won't know for sure until we have fully discussed the intended uses of the machine, which could take some time. So I am wondering if I can just give users ordinary accounts using System Preferences and then convert them at a later date to Open Directory accounts. I tried to do this with the first account I created for myself on the system and found that the name spaces of the two kinds of accounts conflict, and it's especially hard/dangerous to change a short name (is this really true??)
It would be confusing for users and a headache for me if everyone has two distinct and unrelated accounts. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Liz
+I do get a warning if I launch Server Preferences: it says "Server Preferences can't be used with advanced configurations of Mac OS X Server." Doesn't that confirm that I chose Advanced?+
    I guess it does?
I'm thinking you might be getting System Preferences and Server Preferences confused? Your original post was about converting ordinary accounts to Open Directory ones? Provided you've configured the Server as an Open Directory Master with all that that entails then you can install a clean OS on your clients. Provided the DHCP Server is handing out the correct information then after the OS has been installed and at the point the Setup Assistant asks you to create the initial account you should be given a choice to either create one locally or use one that is from Open Directory. If you choose the latter option then a generic local admin account gets created anyway. This is how its supposed to work. However you could forego all of this and simply create a secure local admin account. Join the client to the ODM using the well established method. The same result is achieved.
If you had chosen Standard instead of Advanced a lot of the auto-discovery bit comes into play. To be honest I don't really know although judging by the documentation and what some have posted here this is what happens.
    You might find this useful?

  • Ack. did i move something accidentally in GRAPHIC CONVERTER

    argh.
i think i might have done something really dumb by accidentally moving a portion of my APPLICATIONS folder while working in Graphic Converter. is this possible?
the screenshot at the bottom shows an Applications folder with data in it that is supposed to just be full or images and the GC screenshot seems to show the Applications folder in here as well.
can anyone decipher this for me? i think my testing in this app has got to stop and i have to move to something else...

    THANKS

Thank you for the reply.  Its good to know i am not the only person seeing this.  I did confirm your observation.  I have both PSCS5 and PSCS5.1 installed.  PS CS5.1 is automatically made the default editor and i have linked CS5 in as the custom alternate.  When choosing to edit in the custom alternate the "edit in" dialogue appears-- when using the Default CS5.1-- no dialogue appears.
EDIT:  With A little more research I did find out that everything is working as it should-- The Default Editor is not meant to show the "edit in" dialogue and will always apply whatever lightroom adjustments you have made (flattening the image to whatever format you choose in the preferences) -- you can however have full camera raw editability by choosing "open as a smart object" which will allow you to open up the RAW format within Camera Raw from Photoshop.
You can also have the "default" editor also saved as a custom external editor -- saving it as a preset-- and selecting the preset -- which will bring up the "edit in" dialogue.

  • Bulk convert to png and resize (pixelmator, graphic converter or other)?

    hi all.
i have been looking at pixelmator and graphic converter as i have a need to both CONVERT IMAGES to png as well as to RESIZE and "RE-PIXELATE" them to some fixed pixel width. i have been finding Preview to be fantastic with the bulk resizing (you simply open all the images and then pulldown to resize, set the new size and then save). this requires that i move the resized images to a new folder so as to not over-write the original but it is extremely nice and /quick/.
unfortunately, converting these to png in Preview appears to require me to export each individually (and then i have to go back and delete the other file types with the same names as the new png's which i don't need).
i have been using Name Mangler which is super fantastic for bulk renaming and i am wondering if there is a methodology in either of these tools (or if there is a better tool for this) or if this would be better accomplished in something like Aperture. i /tend/ to keep information such as this residing in a FOLDER on my desktop because it is about to be uploaded to the web via ftp but if there was a great benefit to doing this in something like an Aperture database i could certainly move in that direction.
anyone have any specific explanation of specific steps i could take in aperture for this or in other software?
this seems like a reasonably common need (size to width, dpi and file type)...
    TIA

    Jon,
I think the export presets in Aperture can do what you want.
You just would have to define a custom export preset.
Assuming the images you want to convert have been imported to Aperture, select them in the Browser and select to export the versions (File > Export > Versions).
In the Export panel select a png export preset, then switch to "Edit"
In the "Edit" panel duplicate the png preset, then set the pixel size you want to use and export your images.

  • PDF documents needing Graphic Converter

I don't know why in the heck I should have to rely on Graphic Converter to download PDF files. I have the most recent Adobe PDF reader on my computer. Shouldn't I just be able to download PDF files without Graphic Converter? When I download PDF files I'm required to do the 2-step to get there. Just seems to be an added step that I don't need.

    Hi Cynthia,
Click on a PDF and then press command+i (Get Info in the File menu). Set the Open With to your PDF viewer and then click the Change All button. They should open properly now.
