Graphic creator confused

I just moved from a pc to Mac. I used CS2 for all my template and design creations. I also had Photoshop 3, which had some basic options in Standard mode but I didn't use it because I had cs2.
When I purchased the mac, I also purchased Photoshop 6, which I should be able to pick up tomorrow. I cannot afford to buy the cs3 for mac and I understand that either the cs2 I had on the p pc is not compatible with mac OR it won't work on Mac period. I don't know yet if photoshop 6 has the standard editing version.
Is there an apple/mac made design program LIKE the CS family? I looked at everything but am confused. Even cs3 doesn't say specifically it can do what I used cs2 for.

Forgot to mention that I do have the iWork program that came with the mac as a promotional thing. Have not yet installed it. This is about day 2 with the Mac.

There's a couple of things i could suggest:

2. another option if you are looking for a fairly high end package like photoshop is you could try Aperture. this is made by apple and is plenty powerful (and cheaper than Photoshop CS3). Whether it does everything you need tho i honestly couldn't say as i'm not a graphic designer.

Graphic creator confused no longer!

So I downloaded and installed the trial for Photoshop 6 for mac and attempted to create items, at least on a basic level, like I did with cs2 on the pc that died last week. I AM able to do what I need with Photoshop 6! Yay me! Worries are over and I can get back to work.
I just wanted to post in case anyone else with this dilemma needed input. The Full Edit option in Photoshop 6 is NOT like CS2 (or CS3 for that matter) but it WILL allow me to create items of my own for templates and webpages with text, textures, shapes, etc. Which is just what I need. I know I never used CS2 to it's full potential.
I did pick up the Photoshop 6 from the store today as it came in so I'm all set. Thanks any and everyone who input in the other thread!

Graphics Driver Confusion - BSOD HP Pavilion dv9500

My wife has a 32 bit Vista laptop whose service tage translates into a dv9657cl. A few days ago she started getting seemingly random BSODs. When I got a chance to see it, it referenced file nvlddmkm.sys with a stop code of 0x116.
It seemed like a display driver problem so I did a Google search on the error, was taken to an NVIDIA website were I downloaded and installed the latest GeForce driver. I rebooted and gave the laptop to my wife. I felt very good about myself.
A few hours later she gave it back. Trying to watch some video from Facebook gave her the same BSOD error. I went to the HP Driver page, and was prompted to Scan your system for out-of-date and missing drivers and software. Seemed easy enough although I was told I needed some additional software for HP to do the scan. OK. I downloaded some framework software and assumed I would get a scan result.
I did not. Instead it translated my dv9500 to dv9657cl and wanted to know if I needed drivers or to report a problem. Reporting a problem took me to screens that addressed specific error conditions, none of which were the nvlddmkm.sys problem I was encountering. Choosing drivers took me to a page for my laptop and OS. The graphics drivers expanded into 3 choices , each of them saying something to the effect that each selection contained the video driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems.
What? So not only am I not getting a scan result showing me my outdated drivers, but now I have to guess which driver to download. Since I've already given HP my model number and OS, shouldn't they be able to tell me what graphics driver I need?
And what's the scoop on that Scan my system for outdated drivers debacle?

Thank you for your query, I will do my best to assist you!
Your wife was getting random Blue screens. When you had a chance to check the notebook it referenced this error "e nvlddmkm.sys with a stop code of 0x116. This does seem to indicate a driver error.
I am unsure why the HP scan you system for out of date and missing drivers and software did not work. I am unable to explain why it failed or why the incorrect product was show.
HP does not recommend using drivers from the manufacturer's sites as they have not been tested on your system. The ones listed on the HP driver download page are tested and may have been modified to perform correctly with your notebook.

I suggest you run the HP Support Assistant to aid with HP updates and resolving issue. The HP support assistant will also list your computer and its exact model under system information to confirm that it is a 9657cl as you stated in the first line of your post. That would also be why the auto scan detected it as such.
If the service tag and the HP support assistant states it is a DV9657cl then that must be what you have. Here is the HP Pavilion dv9657cl product specifications page so you can compare the product numbers to confirm this.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
As HP produces many models of the same for different regions. it may list more then one driver for your unit. This is to cover all of them. You would need to select the correct one for the specific device in your system or run an automated tool to select it for you. ( HP Support Assistant)
If you input one model and OS and it detected a different model it may have confused the scan for drivers option.

If you're running Windows 7 or later, Windows should automatically allocate up to 1.5GB of system RAM to the integrated graphics.

Confused on vid cards for new dv6t and dv7t quad core units

I've been looking at a new unit and HP is currently advertising the following grahics cards for the above mentioned units. That being:
1GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
2GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
+$75.00
I called customer support and also talked to tech suppurt and no one could tell me what these cards are......does anyone have anymore specific info on this vid cards? Thanks in advance!!!

Advice on best workflow for large Motion project

I am a part-time video editor/designer/motion graphics creator/etc. Normally, I work on projects with pieces no longer than 5 minutes, even if the projects themselves might be 30-40 minutes of total material--mostly video support for conferences and awards shows.
Right now I am embarking upon a mark larger project--10 30-minute segments, each of which is 100% motion graphics. They all involve a speaker against a green screen for the entire segment with the motion graphics keyed in front of and behind him.
We recorded this directly to hard drive in a studio that had a VT4 (Video Toaster) system, so the best Mac-compatible codec they could provide me for clean green-screening was full-resolution component video. This is giving me great keys, but I also have about 500 GB of raw footage.
In this project, I need to first edit all the takes from each episode into a clean 30-minute piece, and then add the motion graphics. And this is where my question comes in. It seems to me FCP is much better for editing the raw video, but that Motion is where I want to do just about everything else. I need to somehow bring the video into Motion, because I want to create "real" shadows against my background from my keyed footage.
When working with a long project, and with a full-resolution codec, what is my smartest workflow? I am trying to spend the least time possible rendering back and forth, and also avoid generating huge in-between files each step of the way. It seems that any way to approach it has plusses and minuses, so I want to hear from people who have been there which path gets me to my goal with the least hassle.

"Real shadows are only faked in Motion. You have many options including a simple drop shadow or a copy of your matte layer filled with a gradient and a gradient blur applied with a distortion filter so it appears to be projected onto the wall. Be sure to take the time to make this a template effect and to keyframe the shadow angle if the foreground subject moves.

Well, you've got two conflicting interests. One, you have to sync the Motion work with the video of the keyed speaker and, two, you have to edit. But it seems to me that your planning must include lots of design work up front, media you can re-use or modify slightly, text formatting that can be precomped, a large stock of effects you will apply over and over again. Do all of this stuff first.
You also want to explore working at lower rez through your planning and roughing stages. for instance, there's no reason to pull a full rez copy of your foreground into Motion if all you need to do is sync to his audio and get rough positioning. You can put him over black and export all of his clips using any medium to low rez codec at reduced frame rates and just use the Screen Blend Mode to drop him roughly onto your Motion projects.
You'll get lots of advice over the next few days. If you're posting to other Motion or motion graphics forums, please do us all a favor and return someday to all of your threads and tell us what you did and what you learned.

IWeb For Commercial Use, Implemented Back End Code Questions

Well I have been looking for this anwer all day. I was wondering wether iWeb could be used for commerical use without any issues of copywrite or license software trouble. Now I know that the software is licensed to me and I cannot redistrubute it. I also know that iWeb code is copywrighted. I do not care about these two things existing, and I am happy to implement iWeb as the generator and me as the license holder. These are not the issues
The issues that remain and worry me is if whether I can use iWeb for commerical use. I know it states that it is intended for personal. I want to implement other systems that are not even iWeb related that will run my video players and music and so on. But for the overall look of the website I like iWeb as the image and graphic creator to create my text and background images and so on. I want to also change code that will work for me that iWeb does not support.
I do not want Apple to get upset with me for using their program for commerical use, but I am a semi advanced web person that knows html and php really well and would like to add my own code and stuff to my advantage
Does anyone know what the copywright is for iWeb and the license permits?

I also know that iWeb is only html, css and js based, but I want to add my own personal stuff that it is not related to apple that will run other things. I am not sure if this will violate apples terms however.
I'm puzzled why you think your modifying the html and other code produced by iweb might possibly violate anything. Is there any other web editing software which imposes such restrictions? If so, I would be curious which ones do that.
I think there are several people in this forum who have used iweb to create some basic code and then used Dreamweaver and other apps to add advanced features they wanted for uploading to non-.Mac server.

My Number One Motion 3 request

This is a so near yet so far problem I currently have with Motion 2.12.
It makes it very tough for me to convince broadcast professionals to use Motion in their workflows. Motion 2.12 will import all layers of a Photoshop file as separate objects
and place them under a layer like 'import as composition with cropped PSD layers' in After Effects. Great. Broadcast graphics creators make layered photoshop files
with alpha masked pack shots for repeated ad content all the time.
You can animate away at real time speed in Motion and get those packs/products/CDs/DVDs onscreen and looking good.
But what you can't do is replace the content of one of those objects with another without dragging it from the file browser. The only workaround is to make individual photoshop files of each PSD layer, and drag them over your Motion layer or object. Its only a partial workaround as when replacing content the photoshop layer will replace without its cropping boundary throwing off your animation.
Nasty. Especially when its so easy in After Effects. Each photoshop layer is displayed in a folder ready to replace by simply dragging over the selected timeline layer while holding ALT or option.
If anyone can explain a way around this issue that would be great.
If its fixed in Motion 3 that would be even better.

Phew! The first sensible reply I have had to this post!
An imported Photoshop file will indeed update in a Motion project if the original Photoshop file is updated.
This is another roundabout way way to deal with this problem.
The graphic artist preparing the layered Photoshop file could swap out the old content and replace it with new within Photoshop, and the animation and effects applied to the objects inside your Motion project would remain intact and update to the new content.
But the Photoshop layers would need to be named identically and the number and order of Photoshop layers could not change.
The crux of this issue seems to me to be that Motion currently only allows multiple layers of a photoshop file to be manipulated as Motion objects from within a Motion layer. You can see the individual Photoshop layers in the inspector pane from the media tab in the project pane but thats it. You can drag an instance of a photoshop layer object to the file browser, but you can't use this object to exchange or replace with any other object or layer in your project.
Which I find really weird because its very easy to do in Final Cut Pro 5.14 and in Shake 4.1.
Just to be clear about the cropping - I am referring to the boundary of the imported Photoshop layers only. This is before any manipulation of these layers as objects inside Motion. Typically the boundaries of these layers will not be 720 by 576 (I'm in the land of PAL), they will be the boundaries of the image inside that. If you import a layered Photoshop file with a transparent background into Motion with images that are smaller than your video frame size inside the canvas (of PAL - 720 by 576 pixels for example) you will see that the layers import to their image boundaries. This conforms to import as composition - cropped layers in After Effects. We just don't get the next important bit in Motion which we do in After Effects which is each Photoshop layer available as an item in a browser. With show overlays ticked in the view menu in Motion you can verify this for yourself.
You lose this boundary info if you replace the content of a Motion layer or object from the file browser with another Photoshop file.

Resets for new fuser and transfer units

We have an HP laserjet 4500N on which I changed the transfer unit, the fuser and the drum. After I turned the printer back on, it showed only the drum life to have been reset to 100%, the fuser and transfer units stayed at the 54% and 35% values that were on before the change. I tried to go to the Resets Menu to reset these two values to 100% but the only options I get are Reset Memory or Reset Factory Settings. How can I do correct this?

can i depend on worldwide freehand supporters, users to support a petition to adobe to bring back freehand? this looks ridiculous but freehand is undoubtedly a good software for open creative graphic creators, especially logos and web content.

Bug in hal video quirks for IBM X30 laptop

With the default settings the radeon quirk is added to quirks causing the system to hard lock as soon as dpms blanks the screen. Adding a match that disables the radeon_off quirk seems to solve the problem but should not be needed. Clearly a bug in the freedesktop fdi file where the X30 with intel 82830 graphics is confused for the X31 with radeon.

Create Photoshop CS4 graphics for FCP 7 use-- confusion

Still confused about creating graphics in Photoshop for import to FCP.
Been reading up on the fcp7 and cs4 changes regarding this.
Back in the day, one made larger PS files( 720x540) and scaled them down in Photoshop
to 720x480 BEFORE importing to FCP to use in a DV -NTSC sequence.
But with cs3/cs4 film/video new file template presets, do we still need to do this resizing/ change of pixel aspect ratio in PS?
Also, now with the PAR change from Adobe in cs4 and FCP adjusting their PAR,
do we need to change PARS in photoshop anymore, or on older (cs3) ps files?
Chris Meyer wrote a recent article titled "PAR for the Course" at

Confusing cd issue, easy cd creator on win2k and solaris 9

If this doesn't confuse the heck out of you, please provide any ideas that pop into your head:
I have two systems, both running Win2k with Easy CD Creator 5 for cd burning purposes. I'm burning the same folders/files onto a cd from these two systems, these folders/files make use of long filenames. In the burn options, I'm choosing all the same settings. As EZCD5 does not support Rock Ridge, I choose Joliet (I know, Sun doesn't read Joliet...which is why this is confusing...keep reading) for the filesystem type.
The cd from system one shows truncated filenames (DOS 8.3 style, ~1 etc.).
The cd from system two shows the extended filenames.
I'm trying to find how system two does this, so that the change can be made a many systems to be used in burning CD's to be read on a Solaris system. I've hunted through the registry to no avail (althought I'm not done). The fact that Solaris hsfs doesn't support Joliet makes this confusing as all get out. I'm done to try to hunt for differences in some of the DLL files...but it's not going anywhere.
Does anyone have ANY idea how this could be possible? I've gotten no response from the Roxio forums, so I'm praying someone here will have an inkling of a clue...

I would guess that your second system is producing CDs with an ISO-9660 level 2 file system, which supports long file names, and which Solaris can read. The first is probably making CDs with an ISO-9660 level 1 file system.

Graphics Driver - Getting a bit confused

Dotted around this forum reference is always made to 'check that you have the latest graphic drivers installed', in another post referenced to flickr is a way 'one user has managed to tweak his graphic card settings' but somewhere else the advice given is 'disable the NVIDIA Control Panel'.
Forgive me, but this is all getting a bit confusing as LR is about the only application where I have come across so much confusion. Could someone in the know kindly tell me what the latest advice is please? In this post (mentioned before) Adobe actually suggest using the Windows driver http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400808&sliceId=1
Surely as NVIDIA is one of the more common display cards/drivers Adobe would have tested LR using their latest graphics cards - no? Indeed, if this is the case, wouldn't it be useful to users if Adobe actually published what graphic cards had been tested with LR and what the settings should be for each of the latest cards?
It might be looking at things in a very simple way, but surely the onus is upon Adobe to ensure that their application works with at least the newer systems and not put the user through exhaustive tests, tweaks and experimentation in the HOPE that performance will be improved.
Incidentally, I've got installed a NVIDIA 8800GT

I do not believe Lr uses the video GPU for processing and therefore there are no specific graphic card requirements.
What Adobe is recommending (and what I have done) is to disable the nView Desktop Manager. This software controls some apects of a desktop setup but is entirely optional and is not required for a multi monitor configuration using nVIDIA cards. The nView Desktop Manager is software separate from the graphics driver.
Why nView Desktop Manager causes Lr to go haywire is beyond me. And the nVIDIA forums have no mention of problems with Lr.
