Graphic design with the MBP (no retina display)
im a graphic design student and was wondering if the macbook pro (non retina display) would be good enough for everyday designing. I would upgrade to the i7 and 8 gb of ram.
Yes - it would work just fine: and if you ever wanted to add a larger monitor for your home studio, you could do that as well.
Assuming that you'll be using the Adobe CC suite for students?

I'm confused about running an external graphics card with my MBP and Thunderbolt display
I have a new MBP 13" (not retina) with these specs,
Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60
My radio control airplane/helicopter flight sim runs slow. Message reads "Warning FPS to low".
I've been reading about using an eGPU but the info seems to be conflicting. Can I or can I not do this? If I can, what do I need?
This is my first Mac and with this one exception I love it. Thanks for any input you folks might provide.
JohnAFAIK, there are PCIe TB adapters like this - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/HELIOSTB1/ - but I don't know that you can use a graphics card in them with a MBP. You might want to give OWC a call, though, and see if they know of someway to bypass the onboard GPU through a PCIe card.
Good luck,

MBP's Retina display & Thunderbolt display?
I plan to upgrade from my MacBook to a MacBook pro and a Thunderbolt Display, need the large screen display and the portability. Will the Thunderbolt display reflect the quality of the MBP’s Retina display?
I have that exact setup with a new MBP Retina and a Thunderbolt 27" Display. I love the setup. But, no, the Thunderbolt is not a Retina display. However, the size of the screen makes up for it with me. I'm sure that Apple will produce a Thunderbolt Retina display within the next year. Probably kinda pricey since the TD is already $1,000, thereabouts.
One thing I did have go wrong on the display was the "All-in-One" display cable which is a permanent cable mounted to the display (i.e. not replaceable by user) and which has two cable connector that connect to your computer (one for computer power and one for a Thunderbolt computer port). Either the cable or some electronics in the TD leading to the cable failed. My symptom was that video was just fine (fooling you to think all is well), but I lost external control to anything plugged into the ports on the display (USB, Ethernet, Firewire, etc). It was as if the hub inside the display wasn't being powered up or something, and it also did not show up on the System Information under USB. The work around was to unplug the Display Thunderbolt cable from the Computer and bypass it with a regular Thunderbolt cable between the computer and the empty display Thunderbolt port.
I love the setup now that my display works fine. One recommendation is to be sure and have an extra Thunderbolt cable on hand.

When is Adobe Muse going to be compatible with the MacBook Pro Retina screen ?
Applications such as Illustrator and InDesign are comptabile with the high-resolution Retina Display from Apple but Muse still isn't.
I'd like to know when an update is expected bringing compatibility with the Retina screen ?Annmaxine21 wrote:
I believe that Adobe has recently released upgrades to Lightroom and CS6 that make them compatible with the retina screen. First of all, is this correct
Yes, it is correct.
The following include Retina support
Photoshop CS6 13.0.2 (Perpetual license) and Photoshop 13.1 (Cloud members only)

I have always used the apple TV remote for my presentations. I bought a retina display last year for the betterment of my presentations and now I have to stand near my computer and hit a button to change my slides where as before I used my remote. Will a infra-red adapter work with the apple TV remote in the macbook pro retina display? Love my computer, but very disappointed not to have a remote for presentations that does not need the internet. Does anyone have any ideas?
Yes, I used that and it works great if you have wireless connection. Im looking for a remote that worked like the apple TV remote. My questions is, "Is there a USB infra-red remote that works with mac. I have found this one: Keyspan EZ1 easy presenter. It claims with works with PC and Mac and the reviews are good. Does anyone know anything about it or if it works with retina display macs?

Hey guys,
So after a few months of using the MBP 15' Retina, I've discovered that the fans are incredibly loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris.. are any of you guys having the same problem? Like all of a sudden from be quiet to unbelievably loud just as the games load. So yeah, hopefully someone has the same problem as I am having.
What I was thinking was that the MBP Retina 15' is such a beefed up laptop, it shouldn't require that much CPU to run flash games that are not even THAT graphically intensive to which making the fans that loud..
Thanks!Believe it or not, Flash REALLY isn't the issue.
It's hardware makers making devices with less processor performance and requiring software makers to fit into a certain requirements of such. Namely iPhone, iPods and iPads.
Flash is designed to give a lot of features and work across many operating systems, browsers and platforms as a write once solution.
Flash has a certain level of processor performance requirement, which hardware makers like Apple want to build less powerful machines using less expensive processors.
Apple has removed Coverflow 3D effects from iTunes and discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro, leaving only the 15" as having a more powerful 3D capable graphics capability.
So Apple is obviously on a anti-heat/performance quest as they further thin up their hardware, trying to kill Flash by punishing Mac users who want to run it.
Flash runs without a fan sound on my older Mac with dedicated GPU and older OS X verison, no sweat.
Head to your System Preferences > Energy Saver and if you have it, uncheck Automatic Graphics switching, this will use the dedicated GPU and shorted battery life, but if your on power should reduce the heat and fan noise.
Another option is to use SMC fan control and set the fan default speed slightly faster, this will keep the machine slightly cooler and not trigger the higher fan speed as often.
If your running 10.8, you will need to System Preferences > Security > downloads to "Anywhere"
SMC FanControl is over at MacUpdate.com. -
I would like to connect 2 external drives to my Airport Extreme.
1. A standard USB 2.0 external hard drive. No issues.
2. An Apple Superdrive.
Will the superdrive work over Wifi with my Macbook Pro Retina display;
Or will it only work if connected to MBP via USB port on MBP?
ThanksWelcome to Apple Communities
This port is for printers and external drives only -
Is the MacBook Pro Retina display resolution of 2880-by-1800 a strain on the eyes as I understand the higher the resolution the more strainful the screen can be to the eyes?
vinay.sujan wrote:

Well there are two or three causes of eyestrain with displays different people seem to have.
1: Small type/UI elements
2: Glossy screens
3: Flicker rate
1:
The higher pixel rate combined with the display set at the higher resolution is going to cause UI and type to be smaller and harder to see. In fact it's advised to set OS X to a lower resolouton so it upscales better to match the pixel of the higher display.
Reports coming in say watching HD 1920 x 1080 trailers on the anti-glare 17" is best as the pixel content matches the display almost fullscreen, where on the MBP-R it's upscaled and thus looks blurry.
HD content makers are NOT going to change all their video cameras to support 2880 x 1800 full screen, so in order to get a clearer image playing HD 1080 content, one will have to do so in a smaller window.
2:
The new MBP-R dispalys are 75% less glossy, but not 100% less glossy like the anti-glare models so this can still cause some people problems. This can be lowered to under 1%, however I'm suspecting to do so would be considered giving up a military advantage to China where Apple gets it products made.
3:
I don't know about the flicker rate if it's better or not on the MBP-R's than the previous screens. -
I am thinking of either buying the Macbook Pro retina display (15") or waiting for the iMac 27" display. I am mainly focusing on the display, so what is better?

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time. The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues. I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2. -
