Graphic processor is dead
Hello
Is there any possibility to choose the decided graphic processor as default device and deactivate the ATI graphic card in a iMac (mid 2007, ATI radeon HD 2600 pro 256 ram).
What I do at the moment is booting in safe mode to reach this. But on this way, no speaker and micro and camera (in Skype) is working. But in facetime the camera works well (strange, isn't ?)
Thanks in advance for any help!
Hi Brenden,
Many thanks for replaying my request. As I see on the links You sent to me, my iMac doesn't have a integrated and a discrete graphic card. Only a discrete graphic card is present, if I understand right. But, I think, I have to tell You the whole "story" about my difficulties.
One day, starting my iMac, it hangs after doing the start sound and showing the Apple logo and 1/3 of the progress bar. After about 3 minutes, the mouse pointer appears (movable) at the left upper edge in the gray screen. --- And thats it. No further reaction for hours.
I found, if I start in safe boot mode, I get the login window as before. Just the screen flickers a bit and scrolls 3 times itself. After this, I can log in and work nearly as before. Some restrictions I have now in this mode. The speakers, the micro and the camera (in Skype) don't work. Facetime and TeamViewer brings up the camera as before (strange, isn't?)
Prior to this issue, I had a bootcamp partition with Win 8.1 on it. Since the system was hanging, the win partition was grayed out. So I couldn't choose it to start with. Then I decided to erase the whole HDD and did a clean install with Yosemite.
Thereafter, an expert from the support community said, the graphic processor might be defective. I had to send him a system check dump, generated by a UNIX script, he gave me. (see my former post : Yosemite 10.10.1 will not boot regularly)
Now, my idea is, to reactivate the units which disabled the safe boot mode, I suppose. I don't know, if I'm right with my idea. But, this way I could work with my iMac nearly normal. Maybe, there are other reasons for the faulty functionality on my iMac, who knows?
Many thanks for Your help in advance!
Regards,
Supportix

MacBook Pro A1260 with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor
Hello,
I booted my MBP 2.5Ghz Core 2 Duo this morning and was greeted with a startup chime and then a pink 'chequer board' effect on screen while the apple logo appears faintly in the background. The OS doesn't ever load because the startup sequence seems to freeze shortly after this.
I think this sounds like the infamous NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor failure
If so, am I correct in thinking Apple may still be addressing the failure, free of charge. I think it's supposed to be up to 4 years from date of purchase, but given that this macbook was discontinued in Oct 2008, and it's now sept 2012 it would make it very tight, perhaps even exceeding the cutoff, becuase I can't remember the purchase date.
Does anyone know the restrictions to this offer? Do you need the original receipt/invoice? Does the MBP need to be standard, or can it have been upgraded with SSD or 2nd Hard Drive, or anything? Are they even strict on the cutoff date? Anyone have any experience on what to expect? I'm fearing the loss of time and projects while this is being sorted out
Thanks all. It's a little late for me to jump into your discussion, I only read it when I posted an issue with the same model.
Well, I hope you got it fixed soon enough in 2012, because as I learned in the past few days after purchasing that model and reading up on the issues, Apple stopped the care for this fault on December 7th or so in 2012.
Seeing that people still get problems due to that graphics card, I should try to return the used one I just bought. I might run well now, but who knows how long. -
Early 2008 MBP w/ NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor fail
My beautiful Macbook Pro 17" (early 2008) just started getting stripes on the screen and randomly shutting down; research and a call to a local Mac repair person say this is the known problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor.
What do I do now considering the class action suit in the States, and it being 2014? Do I take it to my nearest Apple store and request a fix/replacement?
I've been a Mac user since the early 6100, moved to my beautiful G4 ('Albert', as he was lovingly known), then on to the eMac 800. Bought the Macbook Pro 17" in May 2008 because I needed it to travel with but now it's presenting with vertical stripes and will suddenly shut down for no reason.
Have a Mac Mini which is my main machine, but I really need the MPB for when I travel abroad.
I don't think it's fair that the machine I bought, which I now I find out has a known issue with the graphics card, won't get dealt with because Apple closed the replacement programme in December 2012 (according to this page on Apple MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues). And if it's a known faulty piece of hardware that was installed in their machines, how can there be a time limit on the replacement? If I only use my machine once in a blue moon that means it will, logically, fail much later that a person who uses a machine every day, so why do I lose out. I spent just the same amount of money to buy the new machine as everyone else so where are my consumer rights?
If there's an Apple representative that would like to respond and resolve my issue, I would be grateful. I can take my machine to the nearest Apple 'genius' bar tomorrow for the diagnostic to prove it's a faulty Nvidia graphics processor.
I'm hoping my dad with his Dell PC, which he bought in 2005 and is still running, is not right to scoff at my Mac love!
With kind regards,
Tracy Shorrock
@FreelancealotHi Kappy,
I found my nearest UK store in Solihull, but it tells me there's no availability for appointments with people with Macs until Friday at 4pm!!! I'll be leaving the country on Thursday and need this sorted out before then.
I don't want to delay my flight, drive all the way to Solihull to be told my MBP is out of the time perioid available for the replacement programme. What exactly do you mean by 'take it in for a service'? If it's the Nvidia card as everything points to, what will they do?
Thanks for your time, and suggestions.
Cheers,
Tracy -
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor Macbook Pro 15 in model June 2007
Screen black out with power on, read on the web that this is due to manufacturing defect of NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor, will i still get the free replacement from Apple service centre?
Hi
Are you getting the MacBook Pro repaired ? -
My MacBook Pro 15-inch with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors just failed. Do you guys know if apple still fixes them?
I tried last week. The best I could get was a discount on the repair, but the damage to my logic board by the GPU caused it to no longer boot. The program ended in December last year, but it has been extended in the past.
If you have no other damage you might be able to get a flat rate tier 1 repair if you are in the USA. -

How do i choose a better graphics processor for my MacBook Pro when ordering it?
I am considering getting a non retina mac book pro online and read about customising it for better performance. It mentioned upgrading to a better graphics processor, but I see no options to upgrade in the checkout, only upgrades to the processor. Do I buy graphics processor separately after I have my MacBook?
You cannot upgrade graphic processor after buying it.
There are two versions of MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch.
One comes with Intel Iris Pro Graphics and other with
Intel Iris Pro graphics and NVIDIA GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5.

I have Photoshop CS6 Extended Students and Teachers Edition. when I go into the Filter/Oil paint and try to use Oil Paint a notice comes up "This feature requires graphics processor acceleration. Please Check Performance Preferences and verify that "Use Graphics Processor" is enabled. When I go into Performance Preferences I get a notice "No GPU available with Photoshop Standard. Is there any way I can add this feature to my Photoshop either by purchasing an addition or downloading something?
Does you display adapter have a supported GPU with at least 512MB of Vram? And do you have the latest device drivers install with Open GL support. Use CS6 menu Help>System Info... use its copy button and paste the information in here.

the 3d features require 'use graphics processor' is enabled in the performance preferences. Your video card must meet the minimum requirements and you may need to check that your driver is working correctly

What happens if you just try to use your ordinary Intel graphics processor? (I have an Macbook with intel processor) Do you just see a bad image quality or no image at all?The intel processor you are mentioning is the CPU not the GFX card. You likely have an Nvidea GFX card in your macbook depending on what model and vintage it is.
The machine itself may not have enough CPU power, Ram, hard disk speed, or connectivity to run FCP. Although some folks have limited success, If you are doing a lot of work it's best to have more than enough machine rather than under or equal to minimum. Frustration limits creativity.
If FCP installs it will show you an image. once you start editing is where issues will arise, Motion will very likely not run at all -
Intel Graphics Processors Not Supported!?!?!?
So I read the Logic Studio system requirements and bought the new version for my Core 2 Duo white MacBook, since it fits the specs. I'm just about to install and I read the "Before You Install" doc.
It says about STP and Compressor, "Integrated Intel graphics processors not supported.) Whatthe?
What does this mean? That STP and Compressor won't install on my MacBook?
Shouldn't this have been in the Logic Studio system requirements?
I'm stuck and don't want to install now at all.
Help?Well, it all installed, though when I launched STP, it threw up a dialog that said it might not work properly with less the 128 MB VRAM. Oh, joy. We shall see.
Apple really needs to put this on their LogicStudio System Requirements page. -
Core Image and Intel GMA950 graphics processor
Does the Intel GMA950 graphics processor support Core Image?
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.4)And it's fast! (contrary to lots of the bad hype about integrated graphics sucking.) Intel and Apple did their homework on these minis.
