Graphic Software?

Hello! I am new to using a mac. So far I love everything I can do with pictures. I am interested in doing some designing. (I design stationery and photo cards.) Is there a program on here that I can use? I have played around and haven't found anything. What would be the best (basic) program to get to use with a mac. On my pc I was using photoshop and illustrator. Thanks!

  • Do the Imac support Corel graphics software?  Or does Apple make its own graphics software?

Does the Apple Imac support Corel Draw for graphics design?  Or does Apple provide its own graphics software package when making an Imac purchase?

There are thousands of graphics apps available for OS X. A very quick look on Corel's web site showed Corel Draw is not available for OS X, probably another reason Corel is in sad financial shape. Apple does not include any graphics creation software when you buy an iMac what is included is OS X and the iLife suite of products.
If you are interested in a substitute for Corel Draw then I'd recommend using Google to search for OS X alternatives, I'm sure you will not have a problem finding many suitable alternatives.

What you choose may depend on your budget, skills, etc.
    Preview comes with OS X.
GifConverter and Pixelmator are in the (Mac) App Store and work well.

  • Picasa-like graphic software for PPC e/iMacs?

I run simple courses for retirees to learn digital photo enhancing and management.  I prospective participant has appeared with an older Mac - "one of the rounded ones", she said - and I wonder how I can now help her as Picasa is for Intel-only kit.  It is clearly a PPC-based machine but which one, I don't know.
Can anybody recommend a compatible, simple picture enhancing/retouching/managing software that is similar to Picasa, please?  Cheap would be good and free even better!

Thanks for that, Klaus1.  GraphicConverter's designers had an eye pointing at Photoshop, methinks!  One of Picasa's major points is that it provides many ways to organise images - nothing amazing but all potentially useful for being in one app: folders, Albums, tags, Google-quality searches, batch renaming all come to mind.  It's graphical enhancing is fairly pedestrian but adequate and easy to use.  One neat trick it has is to hold onto any changes made to files, whether the changes are saved or not, displaying the changes whenever the image is displayed in P but not if the file is approaced directly e.g. via a file manager.  I think it's cute, anyway.

  • Graphic Software Not Optimised?

I'm heading off to college in a few days, and i am looking into buying an iMac for my multimedia and graphic design course. We will be using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe InDesign CS, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash and Final Cut Pro. I've heard that because of the iMac's increased processor speed there is a problem with the software not being fast enough, has the software been updated yet? If not when is it expected to be updated?
    Regards,
    Jack Nichols

The software you are talking about was written to run on PowerPC processors. Macs now have Intel processors, rendering PowerPC code unusable. To get around this, Apple have included an application called Rosetta with Intel Macs. This translates PowerPC code into Intel code as it is used, meaning PowerPC apps can be run on Intel processors. However, this uses up a fair bit of processing power and RAM, hence the reason they run slower than native Intel applications.
Final Cut Studio is now a Universal application (meaning it runs on both PowerPC and Intel processors), but as far as I'm aware the other applications you mention are not Universal. I would imagine however, it is more a question of "when" the Universal versions will appear, as opposed to "if" they will.
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say they'll all be Universal apps within the next year.

  • Newbie to graphic software - elements or photoshop?

    Hi!
I hope I'm posting this in the correct place.
This question has probably been asked before but I'd like to ask it again given my situation.
I'm a computer programmer by profession and occassionaly do HTML work as well.
To extend my knowledge, I started thinking about acquiring some graphic skills, and perhaps in the future I may use them for work or just as a hobby.
I'm not a photographer though it seems to me that touching photos a bit can be a nice way of making some imporvement (red eye, dust, etc). I know this can be accomplished via both applications (and Elements is by far cheaper).
By question is which application is best for me to focus on, taking in mind that it might aid me in the future?

    Get Elements and download GIMP.
That should cover anything you need and then some.
GIMP will handle some more advanced stuff, makes it easy to create seamless textures/tiles for web or game graphics and has some neat higher end features along the lines of CS4 like vanishing point, layer effects (via plugin), content-aware rescaling(called Liquid Rescale) Liquify(called iWarp), etc.  GIMP basically approaches Photoshop in terms of power for stuff like game or web imagery(though never matches it).
If you find you use advanced features enough and GIMP is offering stuff Elements doesn't handle, or is more geared towards your workflow, then the question is whether or not moving up to Photoshop is worth the price of admission.  GIMP is perfectly fine and will do more than most people need, but if you do enough specific work you may find Photoshop's interface may be worth it.  I don't say interface meaning where buttons and menu items are, but the actual implementation of the same tools is usually a little smoother.  For example setting text along a path is possible on both, but easier done in PS, Content-aware rescaling lets you dynamically scale the image while GIMP has you entering X/Y values, Liquiify is a little more robust than iWarp.  That sort of stuff.  If you work with 3d models, you may even like CS4's decent handling of UV and 3d models.
Once you take the plunge, the future cost of ownership for Photoshop CS isn't bad, it's upgrade rates for each new release.  And Photoshop has a long useful lifespan.  The original CS (8.0) is still a hell of a program.  The real question is whether or not it's smart to get into it.  There's a reason people see Elements as a hell of a bargain and a smart buy over Photoshop.  It does most of what you need and there are even some add-ons to bring it just a bit closer to "real" Photoshop.

  • Doesn't the new macbook pro come with any graphics software?

I know windows comes with Paint. Does Mac have anything similiar to this?

I do not know Paint so hard to comment. However GIMP is  freeware compariable to photoshop.
I too use Graphic Converter and about 5 or 6 others.
    ImageTricks is another freeware.
    hope this helps

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

  • How do I erase areas around an item in a graphic?

How do I erase areas around an item in a graphic either in .tif, .jpeg,or PNG format?
That should be a simple thing to do in PSE 8 Mac or Fireworks (both up to date in a top of the line Mac Pro) right? Take the eraser erase the areas around the item you want and save the result. Or if you want to get more sophisticated you select the area with the magic wand or quick selection tool and click erase or make invisible and save. I probably can think of another way. Why in all the world, after I have gone through the above several times, do I end up with the original unaltered graphic which I imported into my webpage in Dreamweaver? Researching for answers about this for days resulted in 0! I bought 2 graphics softwares (Fireworks and PSE) that were suppose to make this easy and I really could not afford! As you can tell I am really p....
I appreciate any input on this. Thank you so much!
