Graphical Tearing w/ Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAPE VERDE

I installed Arch about a week ago, and it's been a great learning experience. GNOME has been slow from the beginning, though, and fortunately today I fixed that (issue with Gallium [resolution]). However, once my video card driver was loaded correctly, I noticed weird visual tearing, and a black window when making the window smaller.
I have a Radeon HD 7770 card, which uses the Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAPE VERDE driver. I'm not quite sure what logs to post for this, I've included the relevant (I hope!) bits from Xorg.0 and the relevant dmesg bits below.

Please let me know if there are other relevant logs, I'll post them as soon as I can.
Also, for reference, a few images of the tearing:
Sublime Text 2 acting weird upon resizing. This one is actually much worse than it looks, but Print Screen refuses to take a picture while I'm in the midst of resizing it.
GNOME Settings acting weird when switching between screens.

Option "SwapBuffersWait" "true" sounds related. But you might just have to wait until glamor acceleration matures. Oh and about taking a screenshot while resizing... I think this is why one of the screenshot applets allows you to set a timer.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2012 15" (non-retina) graphics tearing

    Hello everyone,
I would like to post my experiences using two identical macbook pros 2012 (non-retina, with nVidia GT650M 512MB) who presented the same graphics cards glitches and problems, and hopefully to obtain some information.
Exhibit 1: My own macbook pro
Bought from France, in November 2012. Used mainly for professional non-graphics programming, it's clean, no bloated software, and only necessary professional tools are installed. 16Gbytes of memory, by Crucial.
At some point during July, when the machine was relatively cold and I was watching a youtube video, this happened (see attached pics). The mouse was moving, and the computer was fully operational, but with this "glitchy graphics overlay". I logged out, and logged back in. Problem disappeared and appeared again at random times, 4 times during an hour. All those times, a log-out and log-in would fix the problem. After that, I could not reproduce it. Apple changed the motherboard, claiming that it could be a faulty nVidia card.
Exhibit 2: My brother's macbook pro
Bought from Greece, in february 2013. Same model as my own, same RAM, same specs. Used for professional video editing, no bloated software, mostly using Final Cut Pro X. He noticed various malfunctions with FCPX, like freezing when applying a visual effect, and graphics tearing when rendering (that's when the nVidia card kicks in, normally). Yesterday, same symptoms as my macbook pro appeared, graphics tearing, etc.
    EDIT: videos of the problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGBijGMO9NE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnEXtVWgKKM
Both machines are in a completely different environment (I live in France, my brother in Greece), non-smoking areas, and have worked in completely different ways. Both with OS X 10.8.4.
That's two out of two. Given nVidia's background, I am starting to feel that my purchase is not so reliable as I originally thought, and I am thinking that this problem is more generic than originally seemed.
Does anyone have any relevant information on this matter? Could these problems be related to issues with nVidia drivers? Is there any information about unreliable nVidia graphics cards on 15 inch macbook pros mid-2012 (non-retina)?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • Issue with graphics tearing on thumb scroll in Flex 3

We are seeing some off issues with graphics (one using the charting package and the other using degrafa) tearing on thumb scrolling in a large Flex 3 app.  It's very hard to reproduce on OSX with the latest versions of Safari and Firefox, but it shows almost immediately when you run the app on Windows or Linux (regardless of the browser).  I took one of the pieces out of the app and put it into a very simple testbed app and can't get the problem to show on Windows (i was hoping to isolate the issue in a smaller test case, but no such luck).
So, ii've got a few idea's on how to work around the issue, but i was wondering if anyone else has seen this type of problem before?
    Problem:
         - graphics tear on thumb scroll
         - doesn't happen if you click in the track or use the arrows
         - one view is using the charting package, the other view is using degrafa
Thanks for any comments or suggestions...
    Richard

SOLUTION:  changed wmode from "opaque" to "window" in the jsp serving as the wrapper for the app's main swf...
    Here's the reference we used to determine the proper setting for wmode;

  • Graphical Tearing but system stable during OC - Help

I have been overclocking and testing as I go.
I can get a stable overclock to 3.5 Ghz but when running 3d Mark03, I  get graphical shadows flashing on the screen during gaming tests (specifically 2 & 3)
Is this known as tearing ?
I have reduced my overclock down to 3.4 Ghz and the tearing reduces, though is still there a bit.
My current config is as follows:
    MAT/DOT Set to Off
    DRAM Freq - 400
    Adjust CPU Clock = 225
    Spread Spectrum = off
    AGP / PCI = 67.01 / 33.50
    Video board is 500/950
    Voltages
    CPU Vcore = 1.575
    DDR = 2.70
    AGP = 1.60
CPU Temp about 58 Deg under load, 45 - Idle
Sys temp 42 Deg, NB Temp = 50 Deg (All Under load)
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks

Firstly my system spec and settings
MSI 865PE Neo2 FISR Motherboard with 2.1 Bios (latest)
    2x512 Corsair XMS3700 466Mhz currently at timings of 3-4-4-7
    Intel Pentium4 2.4Ghz HT 800Mhz O/C to 2.8Ghz (using 233Mhz FSB)
    2x160Gb Maxtor SATA150 in RAID0
Hercules ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
    Creative Labs Audigy2 ZS
    QTEC 550w PSU
OK now I am having the exact same problem and have been searching everywhere, and have tried everything that I think might help, some of the stuff I have tried (and none of these have made any different)
Turning up DDR voltage to 2.9v from 2.7v
Turning up AGP voltage to 1.8v from 1.7v
    Turning of Dynamic overclocking
Changing ram CAS from 2.5 to 2
Locking AGP voltage to 66/33, or changing it to any other value that my MB allows
The only thing that changes anything is if I lower my FSB speed down from 233mhz to about 220mhz
The tearing is pretty serious in some games, and non existent in others. It seems to be more apparent in games that use new graphical effects,
    Case Study 1.
    Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
When the game first starts the begining level is set in some water. This water must use some kind of pixel or vertex shader becuase it looks frickin amazing, and that is where the graphical tearing appears, for the most part the rest of the level looks fine.
    Case Study 2.
    Unreal Tournament 2004
Some of scenery has some pretty severe tearing, and in other parts it is fine. This is a DirectX 8 game so it doesnt really use the latest pixel/vertex stuff
    Case Study 3.
    Deus Ex Invisible War
Tearing is noticable in almost all shadows
    Case Study 4.
    3D Mark 03
Now this is an odd one, the tearing appears only in the CPU tests, most noticably in the fist CPU test with the WW2 planes
Now I understand the view of some people that it is the GFX card that is the problem as these seem to be the sort of problems related to a highly overclocked card, however my card is not overclocked, and the tearing vanishes if I lower my system FSB speed. Now since I invested quite a lot in my new system; buying more expensive memory so I could overclock it, I do not want to have to lower its speed, when I know that the system is stable. Its just games that the problem crops up, and to be honest its games that I use my PC for most. So any help and guidance would be extremely appreciated.

  • Nouveau graphical tearing, dual-head setup

I currently experience tearing while using the Nouveau drivers for my NVidia card. I experienced the same (or a similar) tearing issue while using the proprietary drivers, which, along with the inherent incompatibility with most of the linux graphics stack, led me to switch to Nouveau.
I'm using the 3D support from nouveau-dri along with xf86-video-nouveau and the most recent Gnome 3 build in the official repositories.
I have a dual-head setup with one 1024x768 IBM monitor to the left of a 1920x1080 Dell monitor. Both report 60Hz vertical refresh rate in their configuration menus.
So far, my attempts to solve this problem have consisted of the following steps:
    1. Use a minimal xorg.conf and configure everything using the integrated Gnome display settings utility. The minimal xorg.conf was as follows:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nouveau"
    Option "GLXVBlank" "true"
    EndSection
    2. Enable/disable the GLXVBlank flag in xorg.conf.
I do not experience the same issue when booted to Windows 7, using the most recent official NVidia drivers.
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer on this issue, it is quite frustrating to boot into Windows to watch videos without horizontal breaks in every frame. Thanks!

Hello. I have the same problem. Not just on Arch. I've had this problem with many distros, graphics cards, and drivers across the board. Installing the proprietary nvidia driver fixes the video tearing (vsync) issue for me. However; A) it's Linux, I don't want to use proprietary anything (otherwise I'd be on a Mac); and B) the proprietary driver will not flip my display to portrait anyway.
I basically have the same setup as Meyermagic. One GeForce 8600 GT, Two monitors (identical acers) 1680x1050 (oriented in portrait so 1050x1680 if you like), using open source Nouveau driver, created a minimal xorg file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf
    Section "Module"
    Load "glx"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Nvidia card"
    Driver "nouveau"
    Option "GLXVBlank" "true"
    EndSection
Both monitors have a refresh rate of 60Hz. I still get really bad tearing as I drag windows across the screens.
Again, I've had this issue with almost every Linux box I've built (the only time this is not even remotely an issue is on my Thinkpad T400 using the Intel graphics). I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong or I've just had bad luck because it is nearly impossible to find any support for this on any forum anywhere. Anything I do find is either a thread like this where someone asked the question and simply never got a response. Or it is some out-of-date forum that give you 10 ways to modify the xorg.conf none of which make any sense or don't work. Not to mention that xorg.conf is now depreciated anyways.
Seriously, even if there is a wiki that concisely explains in excruciating detail how to actually modify the xorg conf files then I could figure it out for myself but I can't find that anywhere which makes me feel really stupid because I know it has to be out there. If there isn't an xorg wiki or xorg.com site or something that explains how to use the thing then I'm not sure I want to live on this planet anymore.
If anyone can help in any way please do.

  • Graphics display problems (dialog boxes) Lenovo G50 AMD A6 Win 8.1

Graphics display problems Lenovo G50 AMD A6 Win 8.1 Greetings to all. After having spent a number of days trying to find a solution to a display problem, I turn to this forum for help. I own a Lenovo G50 AMD A6 Win 8.1 ever since November 2014, and have had display problems ever since the first day, be it while using internet (Firefox or Explorer) or various software (Text editors, etc.). Many dialog boxes, including colour settings and controls (open, close etc.) either have an inappropriate appearance or even do not appear at all! I manage to "click" on the right places using memory: most areas are INVISIBLE! Another example would be that I do not see any backround colour or image on most webpages such as this one).  Some suggestions included checking for graphics updates (but the drivers used were already up-to-date).  I 'd be most obliged for any new suggestions. Thank you very much. George

Greetings to all, I finally decided to express my utmost discontent with- the Lenovo G50-45 I bought before Christmas 2014,- the summary response with inappropriate links that I received after exposing  my problem- the fact that I tried to dowload the following graphics driver  (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
    exe
    526 MB
    Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

  • Graphic tearing while scrolling horizontaly and in 3D mod

    Hello,
I have the following problem : in 3D mode, with graphic acceleration, when paning, vertical objects are torn appart (strong tearing effect). Activating the "Vsync" option (vertical synchronisation) on all my games have no effect.
It happen also while scroling horizontaly with the webbrower or text (not as strong as in 3D applications).

  • X freezes randomly, screen turning black or flickering

    Hey everyone,
I'm having this annoying issue where X freezes randomly, I can't tell exactly when it happens. But when it happens, the following occurs:
    - Screen is frozen, sometimes turns black, sometimes turns black and reappears, but still frozen.
    - Cursor and sound (e.g. music) still works
    - When switching to a new tty (CTRL-ALT-F6), I can log in and restart gdm using
    sudo systemctl restart gdm
    - When I'm in the other tty and trying to switch back to the graphical view, I get stuck completely, not even switching consoles works now.Reset is the only option from there
    - Blindly restarting gnome-shell doesn't work
I somehow have the feeling, it happens more often when I physically move my laptop, but thats just a gut feeling. It also happens often when my screen is locked and I try to log back in.
I found this bug report, but its quite old and that doesn't help me: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14594
Any help would be very appreciated, its really annoying to lose my work so often.

  • [Solved] Catalyst + Minecraft: system freeze.

    Hi everyone,
I bought a new graphics card: the ATI HD 7750 (7700 Series, Cape Verde) and installed catalyst-total from the [catalyst] repo, because the 3D performance with xf86-video-ati-git was incredible poor. I wasn't even able to scroll in chromium with this.
Now with proprietary fglrx everything performs buttery smooth, except I get severe troubles running 3D games.
The only one I'd miss very much is Minecraft, but also there I always encounter a system freeze after 5 seconds. Only S-Abf + B can help me get out of there, I cannot switch to tty1-6 to fix this issue.

EDIT: By the way, I tried lots of things from the wiki. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Catalyst.
But there was one point I could't figure out how to implement:
The radeonfb framebuffer drivers have been known in the past to cause problems of this nature. If your kernel has radeonfb support compiled in, you may want to try a different kernel and see if this helps.
    How can I disable radeonfb?
EDIT2: Well, almost 2 years later the open source driver is good enough to handle Minecraft and others very easily. Closed.

I read the open source drivers for the Southern Island Cards have been improved, but aren't ready for 3d accelerated use yet.
    http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.vide … evel/45138
Therefore users of the 7700 series have to stick to catalyst and I still have no idea what the cause of the freeze is. Can anyone help?

  • AMD Graphics Card Issue

This past year I switched to CC.  I then discovered the 2014 version of Adobe Premiere Pro required me to upgrade my video card.  I have Intel i7 920 running at 2.67 with 4 core with 16 GB installed and 32 GB total virtual memory on a board.  My computer guy installed AMD R9 290X. It never worked right.  In the initial testing it looked fine.  The software that came with the card showed solid performance,  when I took it home and started to use intensive video applications such as Warp Stabilizer after a few minutes the whole computer would slow down and the computer would literally stop.  We went through replacing three video cards.  All did not work.  We switched out to a R9 285.  (He sold AMD)  It worked, but I didn’t try doing the warp.  I finally did try using the Warp Stabilizer on a video last Sunday and the computer shut down.  Now the computer is acting as if it doesn’t have any accelerated video card at all. Windows says the card is operating fine.
Before I switch brands I want to make sure I have done everything. I am not excited on dropping unexpected dollars here.  The video card is listed by Adobe as approved.
Is there a diagnostic program that will show that Adobe programs are working properly with the video cards?   I am not going back to my same computer because this is over his head. If you have any suggestions, I am all ears, but this is out of my technical league.  I just want to do video.
Here is my event log bug check: and below that are the settings for the video card

Update 12/11/14 - Finally was able to have Adobe syc with computer.  Answer is graphics card works. Heavy graphics use such as Warp Stabilizer may cause shut down.  "Oh",  Maybe a cigarette warning would be helpful on the app. Maybe an app to signal that's what occurred or suggested techniques of maybe breaking up large clips into smaller ones. Anything would have save me hours of investigating.  I mean do we all have to be techies to use this product?

    hi Ashish1793,
If you're running on Windows 7 64bit, can you consider the following:
    1. Navugate to the Control Panel (icon views) > Display Adapters and uninstall both the Intel and AMD Display driver then reboot.
    2. Install the Intel Display Driver first then reboot.
    3. Install the AMD Dislpay Driver (the files will be extracted drivers to the C:\Drivers\VGA folder - overwrite if prompted and reboot if necessary)
When finished,  you should now have both the Intel HD Graphics 4600 and AMD R5 M230 in the Device Manager > Display Adapters
If you get a Code 43 error on the AMD Display Device Manager, try to install the AMD R5 M230 driver directly from AMD website and observe.
If you have Windows 8.1, download the Intel and AMD Display driver from the G50-70 drivers page and install them respectively.

  • Photo Booth Backdrop graphical glitches/tears

I know people had this problem with Photo booth earlier but on my MBP and my new MB that was just bought a few days ago, the photo booth backdrops(like eiffel tower, moon, clouds etc.) all have graphical tears when I move into them. Is apple still trying to fix this or is something wrong with mine? Thanks.

It only really works if the background is well lit and a solid color. Try hanging a sheet behind you with a light on it. Do a wikipedia search on "Chroma key" if you want a good description of how it works.

  • Unable to Launch Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 using High-Performance on AMD Radeon Graphic Card

I have been unable to launch Adobe Premiere Pro since installing it with the error message "Adobe Premiere Pro could not find any capable video play modules. Please update your video display drivers and start again"
    Here are my specs:
    Lenovo Ideapad U400
    Windows 7 (64bit)
    Intel i5 2.5 ghz processor
    AMD Radeon 6470M graphics card
The only occasion during which I have successfully launched Premiere Pro was after reverting to the default graphics card on my computer and uninstalling AMD Radeon, otherwise, I have tried to change Premiere Pro to run on High-Performance on Catalyst Control Center to no avail, I do not wish to revert to the Standard Graphics Card as it slows down my computers performance one hell of a lot, neither do I wish to have to constantly uninstall and reinstall my AMD Radeon Graphics Card when I use Premiere Pro. Thank you for your time.

    Update:
    - with Intel (R) HD Graphics Card disabled, Catalyst Control Center reports that no AMD Graphic card is installed
    - using Device Manager under Control Panel, AMD Radeon 6470M was verified to be up-to-date
    - Premiere Pro works so long as I disable the Intel card before launch, however, I re-enable it upon startup to get rid of the 800x600 resolution
    - AMD Mobility Radeon Driver Verification Tool is unable to verify and update my driver, refers me to lenovo to update it.
    - My graphics card is up-to-date as verified by lenovo
    - Intel (R) HD Graphics Card now up-to-date
    - Display currently mainly using Intel (R) HD Graphics Card (Possibly why it caps resolution at 1024x768 when disabled) I'm not sure how to switch the main Graphics Card used, Catalyst Control Center doesn't seem to have the option.
    - when disabled, computer reverts to vgasave instead of Radeon
    - Disabling Radeon does nothing to existing display
    - After updating my Intel card, Catalyst Control Center reported CCC was not supported by the current display adapter
    - CCC worked after rolling back Intel card
From what I infer, I believe the problem to root from my intel card being the main card used, if there is anyway to switch my radeon card to the default instead of the Intel card, do tell me, I believe this may solve the problem, I apologise for troubling you guys, and I'm starting to feel that I shouldn't be troubling Adobe with my problem with AMD, this discussion is probably really out of place but I hope it will help out others with a similar problem.

  • Where do i find the update driver to my amd radeon r5 graphics card?

I am trying to install all the updates to my computer and windows update likes to install a bad driver to my graphics card. whenever it installs it leaves the display black and cant see anything. can any one help me in finding the right driver?
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R5 Graphics

You can manually install the drivers from AMD's website here:http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/desktop/r5#
Or you can install AMD's Catalyst Software which will scan your system and automatically install and update drivers here:

    hi Ashish1793,
If you're running on Windows 7 64bit, can you consider the following:
