Graphical Time Stretch Problem/Bug??

Hello.
I've dragged a region of audio from the audio bin on to an audio track in the arranger. It is a kick drum track.
Holding down option and clicking the bottom right hand corner of the audio region i then proceed to graphically time stretch it by a small amount (one or 2 bar divisions).
Upon doing this logic warns me about time stretching. I click ok. Time stretching occurs but my audio region has moved forward a few milliseconds. What this means is i lose the accent of my kick drum on the first beat.
Is this a bug or some fault of my own? I am definately time stretching, not length changing. However upon going through the above proceedure the undo is titled "Undo Adjust Region Length"
It is very strange. No other users have reported this problem. Being new to logic i assume I am missing something.
I'm using logic 8.01.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
- Justin.

Hi there, this isn't a bug. I'm going to guess that there's a problem with your kick drum.
Every audio region has something called an anchor. That's the part of the wave that should always be on the beat. If your sample has some silence before the kick starts (even a relatively small amount) the silence is staying on the beat but the silence is being stretched along with the rest of the sample, making your kick even later.
Open up the audio editor for your kick and see where the anchor point is. You can find the anchor in the strip just below the wave form. Move the anchor to the start of the sound (or even a little bit after, perhaps the loudest point of the wave) and try everything again.
What happens now is that the whole wave gets stretched but the anchor point will always be on the beat.
Have fun!
Pete

  • HT5146 logic 9.1.8 time stretching problem

Time stretch in logic 9.1.8 is not working in arrange window or sample editor.
The arrange window stretching causes the computer to process...but nothing changes in the audio track. Time stretching in the editor is grayed out along with other options in that window. I have tried to stretch mp3, wav, aiff from my samples collection and also my own recorded aiffs..also tried using different file locations on my drives..also have checked permissions and have restarted my computer a few times...nothing works.
I am using an imac from end of 2011 on mountain lion.
anyknows how to get this to work?
    thanks

I think it's one and/or the other.. I know compressed files cause problems but I also think it might be a permissions issue of some kind too...
Converting to CAF in the BIN, seems to get around both possibilities... and so far, every time i have converted the resulting file works perfectly fine..
The bit of the Logic Guide that seems to be the clue is this bit...
Note: It is not possible to assign fades to compressed audio files, nor can you destructively edit them.
    Found here....
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=11%26se ction=4
and stretching seems to be distructive.... (not Flex but drag stretch...)
Whats odd is it seems to do it graphically but then as soon as you click on the region, it goes back to it's original size!

  • Time Stretch problem: output playback is jittery/stutters

I have a short clip within a larger project that I copied behind the original on the timeline so that I have the scene play at the normal speed, then in slow motion. The output of the stretched clip stutters or jitters (unsure of the proper terminology). This stuttering or jitters gets progressively worse with ever slower speeds. I would immediately blame the equipment if I weren't using an Intel i7 system with 3 MBs of RAM & 10k RPM drives although my video card may be considered pedestrian by some. I am using the software "straight out of the box" and have not made any changes in preferences yet.

Well, I'm hoping that, although your equipment is "straight out of the box", you've gone to Windows Updates for all of the necessary updates, downloaded new drivers from your hardware providers (particularly you video card's) and installed the latest Quicktime. Even fresh out of the box equipment is sometimes four to six months out of date.
But, that said, there are a couple of things you can do about your playback, depending on what you're seeing when.
    1) If you're just playing it in Premiere Elements, your time stretched clip may need rendering. (Is there a red line above it on the timeline?) Press Enter so that it can render (the red line will turn green). This will give you a better idea of what your final output will look like.
    2) If that doesn't help then, depending on how much you slowed the clip, it may help to apply Frame Blend from the right-click menu to smooth the play out.
If neither helps, it may be related to your source files. Because of the temporal compression system that MPEGs use, they don't do slow-mo nearly as well as DV-AVIs.

  • Time Stretch Problem!

Using Logic pro 9.1.5 I Noticed that when I'm time stretching a track. Once finished, The Level of the track is 3db or more lower than the Original Level !!!! Does anybody know why this happens and if there is anything to do to fix this?

Well, audio is not exactly like a rubber band, I guess it all depends on the harmonic structure of your audio and the way the stretch algorithm manipulates the data, but my knowledge of digital audio processing doesn't go deep enough to fully explain this. The way I see it is that these algorithms have some sort of safeguard feature preventing the level going up - which I imagine could also happen, given the complex interactions of sound etc etc. A rubber band behaves much more predictable - it's the same basic stuff, reacting in a way that requires very simple mathematical formulae. Audio is much more varied an complex than latex.
What you could do, purely as "scientific" exercise, is to create a 30 second audio file, consisting of a constant sinewave at 1 kHz at, let's say, -6 dBfs, and see how that behaves levelwise when stretching it (try both stretching it longer AND shorter ("negative" sretching).
You can use Logics' Test Oscillator insert effect for this, it's in the Utilities section of the plugins.
To me it would make sense that these algorithms are somehow erring on the safe side - the one thing that you wouldn't want is the level to go UP and possibly clip your audio. But again, I don't know, just trying to use logic...

  • Anyone besides me having problems using Time Stretch/Compression?

Each time I use this feature on a voice, it ends up sound doubled in various parts of the dialogue. Any tips?

I know exactly where you are coming... this is 'normal' and everyone has the same problem..
Have you experimented with the different Time Factory settings?
The algorithm you set in time factory (sample editor) is the algo used in the arrange stretching.
It isn't up to scratch at the moment and I run ProToysLE in the background just for time stretching and audio timer correcting etc.
Another option is the Serato logic plugin (which also runs in Time Factory and apparently appears in the listed set of algos, though I haven't used this)
I use Melodyne for more critical things.

  • Time stretch has stopped working in Premiere Elements 13.

I've downloaded the latest Adobe updates. I am using a Windows 8 64 bit computer. I have previously (in the last few weeks) used time stretch to speed up and slow down without any problems but now I can't get it to work in any of my projects. All video files shot with an iPod Touch or iPhone. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

    Chris
As a point of reference for your Premiere Elements 13 question, I have a iPod Touch 4th generation (H.264.mov 1280 x 720 @ 24 progressive frames per second), and I have no problems using Time Stretch or Time Remapping in a 13/13.1 project or other versions.
I would invoke the interference of a possible variable frame rate rather than a constant one involved with your particular type of video (from iPod or iPhone) and Time Stretch, but I am not having any problem with my iPod Touch video (with minimal variable frame rate) and Time Stretch in Premiere Elements. If you want to explore that idea further, you could convert your video's variable frame into a constant one using the free HandBrake program. Then import HandBrake's  H.264.mp4 export into your Premiere Elements 13/13.1 project and determine if you can then apply Time Stretch to that clip.
Have you applied the Shake Stabilizer to your clip before trying to apply the Time Stretch? For that matter, what effects, if any, have you applied to your video clip before trying to apply Time Stretch to it?
All of the above is based on Time Stretch no working for you in a new project with new source media.

  • Time stretching a piece of audio in LE7

I've been using Cubase for years and since I have been doing alot of remix work lately alot of the songs are being sent have been in Logic so I got a copy of Logic Express and I'm able to navigate my way around the basics with no problem. In Cubase SX3 -or CB4 you can time stretch a sample from lets say 124 to 126 bpm. The only thing I see in Logic is the time machine? Is this the way to do what I need to do? I know, I know, read the manual but since I have to work quickly I thought I'd ask here. Any help?

  • Now all clips/files in multitrack screen automatically begin time stretching if boundaries are adjusted - WHY?

I am in the middle fo a large multitrack session with about 40 different tracks and now if I try to adjust the boundaries of a clip - any clip, it begins to time stretch automatically - even when the clip si not set up as being looped!. Is there a setting that causes this? Can it be fixed or is it just another AA3.0 bug?   Help! - This session has now become extremely diificult especially if I adjust a clip boundary and that clip starts some knid of mysterious self-generated time stretching.
    Any help is greatly appreciarted

  • Reporting some proxy problems/bugs

Is there a way to report problems/bugs in the proxy software without having support? I believe this can be done for Java, but what about the proxy?
In our environment we are using the proxy software (currently v4.0.5, but I haven't seen these items in the release notes of the newer versions of the software) in the reverse proxy mode and have encountered what I believe may be a couple of bugs.
Possibly related to a previous poster's "Content-length mismatch" error message, it seems that some app servers respond to an If-modified-since conditional GET request incorrectly by sending a Content-length header along with the "304 not modified response" (there should be no such header in a 304 response). When proxy caching is enabled and the GZip compression filter is used, one result I have seen is the "Content-length match" error message which happens when the incorrectly included Content-length header has a non-zero value. A different result occurs when the incorrectly included Content-length header has a value of zero - the proxy response body gets truncated (completely removed).
A second issue I have seen is with the reverse proxy's handling of a POST with a trailing CR/LF which some browsers (IE) send incorrectly (there should be no such trailing CR/LF in a POST request). The proxy seems to handle the trailing CR/LF for the request/response, however if HTTP1.1 keepalive is used and the POST is followed by a GET request on the same open connection from the browser then the access log entry for the GET request will be broken across two lines.
Hopefully someone from Oracle monitoring these forums will pass these on to the proxy dev team.

Yep, I realize Safari on Windows uses Windows Internet Options to get proxy server info BUT the Windows Internet Options don't provide a place to specify the proxy login information.
As a result, when the browser contacts the proxy it usually (or should) prompt the user for the login info. Safari did the first time and I told it to save the info. Then my login info changed and rather than prompt for it again, Safari sits there and doesn't load any pages.
IE7 uses the same proxy without problems because IE uses the domain login credentials to connect to the proxy server.
Google Chrome uses the Windows Internet Options for proxy support and it prompts me to login to the proxy each time I fire it up and access a website.
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4 will prompt me for login information if the login info it has stored won't work for the proxy connection.
Opera 9.62 prompts me for the proxy login information each time I fire it up, just like Google Chrome.
Out of all of those browsers, Safari is the only one that can't use the proxy because I can't change the login information for the proxy connection.
    Peace...

  • Where is the time stretching butten that makes it easy to time stretch with the cursor in premiere elements 13 ?

Why doesn't preimere elements have the option to trim the clip but the triming is in a matter of fact of - time stretch ?  In premiere elements 10 there was a butten you could press and the curser became a trimer for time stretching.  If there is an option like this in 13 I'll be happy to hear about.  Thanks,  Oren

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running on? Background information for now.
In Premiere Elements 13 Expert workspace, you can access Time Stretch from the Tools Menu or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+R to bring up the Time Stretch dialog.
If you are interested in creating slow and fast motion effects, also see Time Remapping feature found under that Tool Menu.
As for the Premiere Elements 10 Timeline workspace, there is an icon (Time Stretch Tool with the keyboard shortcut X) I see no such icon in Premiere Elements 13.
Clicking on that icon in 10 will allow you to increase or decrease the duration of the Timeline video selected. And, if you go into the Premiere Elements 10 Edit Menu/Keyboard Customization, you will find a "Time Stretch Tool" command with the given keyboard shortcut X. At least, I do.
Even if I try to trigger a hidden "Time Stretch Tool" in 13 with the "Time Stretch Tool" shortcut X, I cannot. And, there is a Premiere Elements 13 Edit Menu/Keyboard Customization/ command Time Stretch Tool with keyboard shortcut X.
As for whys in Premiere Elements 13, you would need to take that up with Adobe who decides on the feature set for a given version. This is a user to user forum.
If you want to file an Adobe Feature Request Bug Report Form, you can use the following link
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&loc=en
I have found some interesting hidden commands/keyboard shortcuts with exploration and experimentation. So, I may do some more exploration on this to rule in or out
any possibility of a hidden Time Stretch Tool feature in 13.

  • Time Stretch Audio in FCP?

I've got a sound I'd like to time stretch on a simple project. I'd rather not have to do anything in STP since this is the only sound I need it for--is there a way to stretch in FCP?

    Hello Mr. Wolsky,
I have read many of your extremely well informed posts on this site and greatly respect your opinion. I am wondering, however, if you are perhaps mistaken in stating that one cannot pitch shift in FCP.
I invite you to go to the Apple Sound Effects Plugins folder and take a look at "AUPitch". I have used it often for making Foley sound effects that I either can't be bothered to search out - for instance a huge metal clanging door I pitch shifted up a few octaves and it became a briefcase lock springing open.
I think people just don't look in that folder because it looks kinda boring.
Here is an extract from an article on Ken Stone about the Apple audio filters.
    Hope this helps.
    Harry.
    AUPitch
+Adjusts the pitch of your audio, obviously. There are a LOT of controls though, and I have to admit that I don't have a clue what a Glb Trigger Thresh or a Loud Aggr K is. Effect blend blends the pitch-shifted audio with the original and is sometimes necessary to make voices sound natural. It is worth mentioning that I've gotten perfectly acceptable results by adjusting the first two parameters and not bothering with any of the others. I'd imagine that most people wouldn't have to adjust more than these.+
+I tried a Google search on some of these parameters but they only turned up forum threads where people were asking what on Earth they meant and no-one was able to solve their problem. If anyone does know, I'd be interested to hear from them.+
+This can be useful for making a male actor's voice more masculine (yes, I have had to do this!).+

  • Time stretch to slow down motion

I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 7. When I use the time stretch to slow the motion down, my final motion is very "jerky". Any way to smooth that out a bit better?

How does the Slo-mo footage look in Preview?
Also remember that you are basically doubling the number of Frames.
This might also be of use for improving the results:
Set field options for imported interlaced video
In most video, each frame consists of two fields. One  field contains the odd‑numbered lines in the frame, and the other contains the  even‑numbered lines. The fields are interlaced, or  combined, to create the complete image. Adobe Photoshop Elements includes a  reverse field order preset for video imported from a hard disk or Flash memory  camcorder that uses upper fields first. If your footage was captured with  reverse order fields (upper fields first), make sure your project uses either  the Standard or Widescreen preset from the Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorders  presets folder. (See Create or change project  presets.)
Ordinarily, interlacing isn’t apparent to a viewer. But because each field  captures the subject at a slightly different moment in time, playing a clip in  slow-motion, creating a freeze frame, or exporting a frame as a still image  makes the two fields discernible. To avoid this, you can deinterlace the image. Deinterlacing eliminates one field and  either duplicates or interpolates the lines of the remaining field.
Reversing the field dominance, the order in which the  fields are recorded and displayed, may also cause playback problems. When the  field dominance is reversed, motion appears jerky because the fields no longer  appear in chronological order. Fields can become reversed when the field  dominance of the original videotape is the opposite of the field dominance of  either the video‑capture card used to capture the clip or the video‑editing or  animation software that last rendered the clip. Reversing can also happen when  you set an interlaced clip to play backward.
To avoid these complications, you can deinterlace the  image. Deinterlacing eliminates one field and either duplicates or interpolates  the lines of the remaining field. You can also set field options for an  interlaced clip so that the clip’s picture and motion quality are preserved in  situations such as changing the clip speed, exporting a filmstrip, playing a  clip backward, or freezing a video frame.
Select a clip in the Timeline, and choose Clip >  Video Options > Field Options.
Select Reverse Field Dominance to change the order in  which the clip’s fields appear. This option is useful when the field dominance  of the clip doesn’t match your equipment or when you play a clip  backward.
For Processing Options, select one of the following  choices, and click OK.
    None
Does not process the clip’s fields.
    Interlace Consecutive Frames
Converts pairs of consecutive progressive‑scan (noninterlaced) frames into  interlaced fields. This option is useful for converting 60‑fps progressive‑scan  animations into 30‑fps interlaced video because many animation applications  don’t create interlaced frames.
    Always Deinterlace
Converts interlaced fields into whole progressive‑scan frames. Adobe  Premiere Elements deinterlaces by discarding one field and interpolating a new  field based on the lines of the remaining field. It keeps the field specified in  the Field Settings option in the Project Settings. If you specified No Fields,  Adobe Premiere Elements keeps the upper field unless you selected Reverse Field  Dominance, in which case it keeps the lower field. This option is useful when  freezing a frame in the clip.
    Flicker Removal
Prevents thin horizontal details in an image from flickering by slightly  blurring the two fields together. An object as thin as one scan line flickers  because it can appear only in every other field.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Time stretch percentage is greyed out

I'm trying to adjust the speed of a clip using the time stretch tool, but when I click on time stretch, the percentage is greyed out and I'm not able to modify it.  I'm using Premiere Elements 10.  Is this not a feature of Premiere Elements and is only available in Premiere Pro?

Time Stretch, by the way, can not be applied to titles any more than it can be applied to stills. Because, technically, they don't have "time". They're still graphics (even if you've applied animations to them).
Extending the clip should very much slow down the animation. But I guess it depends on which animation you've applied.
Is it roll/crawl animation? Or is it one of the Text Animations in the Title workspace? Or is it from somewhere else?
If it's one of the Text Animations, try going back into the Title workspace (after you've lengthened the clip's duration), select the text block and remove the animation -- then re-apply the animation.

  • Time Stretch Without Ripple APE-11

    APE-11
I am working on a video with B-roll. I have 15 pictures in track Video 3. I want to make them be on screen longer using Time Stretch. My  problem that when I stretch a picture all the rest ripple to the right now our of place. I tried holding down Control but then Time Stretch does not work.
How do I expand pictures without Ripple?
Than k you all and Cheers! Phil

Please give the following a try while I think about alternatives.
Take your mouse cursor and drag out the right edge of the still to increase its duration. You can use the timecode pop up to determine the extent of the increase.
If you have other stills to the right of this one and not side by side and space to spare, they should not move when you increase the duration of the clip as suggested above.
    Looking forward to your results.

  • Clips shift position on timeline when using time stretch

    Premiere Elements 10, Win 7 x64,
I put together a timeline that had four video tracks. When I added a fifth track I started having problems. Specifically, when I put a still image or video clip onto the fifth track and then used time stretch on that newly added clip, the existing clips on the third and fourth tracks shifted their position on the timeline in response to the time stretch applied to the clip on the track above. Why does this happen? I would expect the clips on the lower video tracks to NOT move position in response to a time stretch change to a clip on a track above. How I can I get them to stay put while manipulating the duration of clips on the tracks above them?
    Thank you for any insights.
I have attached three images to make what I am experiencing more clear than perhaps my words describe above.
(top) Image 001: timeline before any change
(middle) Image 002: timeline after adding video track 5 and adding a still image to that track
(bottom) Image 003: timeline after applying time stretch to the still image clip on track 5, showing shift of clips on tracks 3 & 4

When Adobe was designing the operations on the PrE Timeline, it was determined that the majority of users WOULD want the Ripple. That does seem to be the case. The addition of the Ctrl/Cmd modifier key accommodates those users, or those instances, where the Ripple is not desired.
Interestingly, PrPro, PrE's "big-brother" does things in the opposite order. The user holds down the Ctrl/Cmd key to GET the Ripple. The designers figured that the users of PrPro would have different desires, than those of PrE. As I use both programs, I have to keep reminding myself which program I am using at that time - to get the Ctrl/Cmd modifier key working, as I wish, in each program - just the opposite of each other.
    Good luck,
