Graphics Artefacts Since 10.5.2 and Graphics Update

The title says it all. AT first I thought it may be coincidence and my 1900XT was in need of a clean; but it's also happening on my MacBook Pro – odd lines appearing on screen, some tearing and various other artefacts. They go if I close and reopen the window in question, but my rigs were rock solid before these updates. Am I alone?
Do we know what the graphics update did? Was it new drivers?
David

I thought I'd got it solved. Downloaded SMC Fan Control and increased everything by 100 rpm. Artefacts went away for a week. Now they're back
Have bumped up the fans by another 100 rpm and will see if this helps. It's (oddly) mild here in London. Having said that, it will be hotter in summer.
For me, this is definitely 10.5.2/graphics update or a remarkable coincidence. Never happened before.

  • 10.5.2 - Graphics Update and 12" PowerBook

Since upgrading to 10.5.2 I've found that after installing the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 and attempting to play a DVD movie with DVD Player the computer crashes and the only way to recover is to use the power button to force a restart. DVDs can mount on the desktop and play in VLC, but any attempt to open DVD player causes this freeze to occur. On reboot a few times I have lost the ability to play music through the 12" via either speakers or the headphone socket (yet airtunes still works). Lots of other 12" users seem to be reporting the same issue. My MacPro and MacBook Pro seem fine after the updates. Apple needs to pull the Graphics update before more users are caught out.

  • I just updated to 10.5.2 and installed the graphics update

I really loved the folder view in stacks, and changed all of mine to that immediately. And since I had the nifty glass icons, it was super cool. But then Software Update popped up and I installed the graphics update. Now, my Applications stack has the original blue folder, but in Finder, it's the glass one. I don't get it. Help?

    UPDATE.
I was showing people about how much better the folder looks and switched one from "folder view" to "stack view" and back to "folder view." It came back to the glass icon! But then I shut my computer down, and now, it's back to the ugly blue.
    What the heck?

  • Please Help. Serious Problems following 10.5.2 and graphics update

I installed the 10.5.2 update and at first all seemed ok but a bit buggy and slow and more system crashes that I didn't used to have. Than I ran software update and saw the new graphics update which I installed thinking it might fix some of those problems but instead it has made things a lot worse! My main user account is now unusable. Finder is constantly relaunching and applications launch eventually but are stuck on the spinning beach ball and won't let you do anything. I did eventually discover that system preferences still worked ok but slow and tried creating a new admin account which is working fine but I still have no idea what has gone wrong with my main account and can't access all my files. I have tried repairing permissions and installing the combo update through the new user account but the old one is still unusable.

My first guess would be to re-apply the 10.5.2 combo updater, but since you tried that it indicates something else is going on. From the good admin account, launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type:
    +login <username of bad admin account>+
it will ask for the password for the bad admin account. Enter it. It won't show any characters, so make sure you type it correctly. Then type:
    +cd /Users/<username of bad admin account>/Library/Preferences/+
    +rm com.apple.finder.plist+
    +killall Finder+
When the Finder comes back up, quit Terminal and logout of the good admin account and log in as the bad admin. Hope that helps.

  • Display problems after installing 10.5.2 and the leopard graphics update

Shortly after installing the leopard graphics update, my display started exhibiting problems.
The next day, the powerbook wouldn't even boot, just leaving me at a blue screen.
I tried verifying permissions and verifying disk, reinstalling leopard and eventually did a fresh install of Tiger, which boots, but crashes frequently and has graphics corruption as visible in this screenshot:
    http://pics.livejournal.com/dorukai/pic/000fw0hw
The same corruption is visible on a second monitor if I connect one.
The timing (being right after installing the graphics update) suggests that the update somehow caused this problem (flashing the video card firmware maybe?) but any ideas at all are very welcome at this point!
Unfortunately after installing Tiger I kept getting updates, and one has broken the ability to boot normally, I can only boot in safe mode

I have the same problem. It happened right after I installed the graphics update. When the computer restarted, my screen went crazy. I couldn't see anything, just a screen full of horizontal lines. After restarting a couple of times it seemed to go away, but it has begun to happen again recently. although not as bad yet. I am not saying it's not a logic board issue, but it does seem funny that more than one person is experiencing the same type of problem after the graphics update. I guess it's time to take a trip to the apple store.

  • 10.5.2 update and Leopard Graphics update = no sleep mode

All, After updating my MacBook Pro to 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics update, my computer will not longer enter sleep mode after a specified time. I can manually set the computer to sleep mode, but it will not automatically go to sleep mode. I have tried resetting the System Management Control Center VIA http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and everything else in that doc.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA Jon

Call AppleCare and see if they can help.
    Regular trouble shooting
    1) Create a new account, name it test or something
    2) log into that account to see if the behavior changes
    3) If it does, then there is some problem in your own account.
    4) If it doesn't, restart.
    5) If the behavior still doesn't change, there is some system configuration error
    In this case
    6) Open Disk Utility. Verify your disk, then repair permissions (not likely to fix the problem but will at least eliminate that possibilty)
    7) Get a copy of Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a MODERATE cache cleaning
    8) Restart
If still not fixed, reset PRAM and the SMU. Look on the Apple web site for instructions for your particular computer.
If still not different, do an Archive and Install. However go to the Apple web site and download the 10.5.2 Combo updater first. After you Archive and Install from either the disk that came with your computer (assuming that it is Leopard) or the retail Leopard installer. Then run the combo updater. Then run Software Update.
These problems are disturbing and really shouldn't happen, but they do. However, they can be fixed and you'll find that Mac OS is, overall, much better than the alternatives.
BTW, I just went through this whole mess for crashes on wake from sleep (USB issues) and failure to sleep (printer driver issue). Another computer had DHCP problems and actually needed a reinstall. However both of them are working fine now even though it was a pain getting there.

  • Graphics Update (and/or Security Update 5) killed DVD Player Playback???

DVD player worked fined before I applied the Graphics Update (and the Security Update 5).
Both done through the Software Update process
Now the DVD Player application gives me a black screen. (The sound is playing fine).
(Tried different DVDs, including one which I was half thru watching on my MacBook Pro)

I remembered I did one more thing. I swichted from the 32-bit startup to the 64-bit (using "32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector.app")
I now switched back, and DVD Player is working fine again.
So that is what causes the problem. (although I don't understand why, because even 32-bit applictions should run fine in the 64-bit Kernel mode)
I hope Apple will fix this issue soon.

I updated 10.5.2 yesterday. I used the combo updater. It took me 10 minutes. I then downloaded the graphics update, also with no problems. Everything is working just fine. In fact everything seems a little quicker. I use mainly PS CS3, Lightroom and Aperture. All work exceptionally well. I didn't repair permissions because my system is only 2 weeks old. I just went for it!! It worked for me!!!
    Good luck to all!

  • Macbook Pro no longer support Apple Cinema Display after graphic update 1.0

I recently updated my system to ver. 10.5.2 and after that I updated to graphic system 1.0. After that my macbook pro began to have several problems dealing with my 23" Apple Cinema Display.
1- if started in 'closed lid' mode it gives me a kernel panic (shaded screen) error during start up
2- if started in 'open lid' mode it boots fine but whether i decide to close the lid it fails to wake from sleep mode. It starts for one or two seconds and then it gets back to sleep.
So, I made a long time taking test during the weekend and after several "archive and install" I found that this issue is related to the leopard graphic system update 1.0. Somehow this update mess up the way that macbook pro deals with my Apple Cinema Display.
I hope that someone at Apple will address this issue toward a solution in a short time.
I appreciate any other experience in this sense by anybody.
    Thank you for any reply.

  • Problems After Snow Leopard Graphics Update 1.0

    Hi Mac Users,
I recognised some problems with graphic on Mc OS X 10.6.4 after software update SL Graphics Update 1.0 for example:
    - expose extra blue square for window of the application,
    - iPhoto photo preview frame became transparent grey and it comes above not only iPhoto windows but all behind,
    - problems with Safari
    - problems with expose with all window of one application
    - others.
To fix it go please to website appletoolbox.com (topic as subject of this thread) or simple search for it by the subject of this thread in web search engine like Google for example.
    Simply try:
    Reset SMS - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Also instructions and link on mention website.
    or
Safe Boot of Mac OS X - press and hold Shift button after turning on Mac.
Good luck and hopefully Apple will not make more extra problematic updates for us Users
PS. I check that there is no problem on MacBook Pro 2008 edition with this update.

mine isnt going nuts but the display wont come back on after waking from sleep (each time and has been replicable since update installed). so i turned it off from sleeping (the computer) but the display sleeps and that also wont come back on when moving the mouse or pressing any keys. only way to get screen back up is performing a cold boot which kinda *****.
ive tried clearing pram but that didnt help. im not sure whats in the graphics update but the next time i reinstall os, i might just skip this update because its causing me more issues than it supposedly solves (im not a big gamer anyway)
this occurs on a mbp 7,1 (13" early 2010). i have not seen or heard it happen on a mbp 5,4 nor have i tried it on my mbp 6,2 (15" early 2010), but even then the screen on my mbp 6,2 has been going nuts before the update (im guessing a faulty card?) but i use my mbp 7,1 for main development work.

  • IMac G4 graphical issues- 10.5.8 (w/ Graphics Update 1.0!) Help!

    Hi!
I've searched EVERYWHERE for help with this- ot no avail . I have a 700MHz (15") iMac G4 (32MB Nvidia GeForece2 MX) 1GB RAM, running Leopard. Unsupported, yes, but with LeopardAsisst, CleanMyMac and Monolingual, it has been running extremely well despite the curcumstances . But I have re-installed OS X countless times (Clean, Archive & install, etc) Cleaning caches/optimizing/countless tasks w/ OnyX, and every time i wake from sleep, little lines of pixels like this: --- show up multicolored, and never go away until a reboot. what's worse, if you move the mouse, they follow it and make a horrible path of colored lines. Also, when I open Grids in the Stacks folders, the outside of it is lined with weird patterns and colored lines. I honestly despise Tiger after living in the luxury of Leopard, and since performance isn't an issue, what's left? Many others have put Leopard on unofficially, and have no problems! I'm so aggravated, and I just want a fix- permanently. Any ideas? Please help! A 13-year-old could barely afford a G4, let alone a NEW Mac! Graphics Update never helped, and I have (in my many re-installs) used every update of Leoaprd, without a fix. Surely there is one (fix)? PLEASE help, and thanks so much- I can give any more info if desired! P.S. My iMac is upgraded from head to toe- 120GB HD, 1GB RAM, SuperDrive, Clock Battery replaced, (obviously no CPU/GPU upgrades as it is soldered to the logic board) Again, thanks!
    All respect,
    Noah Budgor

I assume you tried resetting PRAM and PMU...?
If you have the iMac plugged into an old or overcrowded power strip (surge suppressor), be sure to try connecting it directly to the wall outlet (as a test) to see if it makes any difference.
You said that you tried many re-installs... If you re-installed Tiger instead of Leopard, does this problem recur?

  • MetaX is suddenly Failing after Snow Leopard Graphics Update?

Is anyone else experiencing any problems with MetaX (http://www.kerstetter.net/index.php/projects/software/metax) causing movies in iTunes to no longer play? I have been using that software extensively previously but since installing the last few updates (Snow Leopard Graphics Update?) everytime I use MetaX to set the tags on my video files it causes them to display a black screen with no audio.

Thanks amop. I was having the same problem intermitently and this worked a treat.

  • 10.5.2 Graphics update not loading

Well after some trepidation I decided to go ahead and load the graphics update anyway (I don't use DVD player at all, and I wanted the graphics update so that Warcraft will run better).
But it won't install it for me!
I get an error message which reads:
The update “Leopard Graphics Update” can’t be saved.
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by “Apple”
Does anyone have any ideas? Or should I just wait till the graphics update gets revamped?
    Thanks!

Stumbled upon this thread trying to find out if anyone's seen before what happened on my macbook pro this morning. it was the first time last night that i left X11 running before closing the lid for sleeping. this morning i was greeted with this:
    http://files.dataring.ee/27022008057.jpg
Disconnecting the external monitor in the hopes that it would somehow reset the display driver did not help, nor did reconnecting it. I could hear the sound effects of the software still running (Skype sounds etc) so I did not want to just power off the machine and risk some data corruption, I navigated blindly to the Apple menu and try to hit the 9th item from the top for Restart. There was some feedback from changing menu items with these random color blocks changing, same for cmd-tab activity etc, so definitely looks like a corrupt display driver problem and most like regarding running X11.
Now I am checking macosforge and it does appear that I am running an outdated XQuartz from last December. I'll hit the upgrade and see what happens.
Perhaps this is related some way to the original post!

  • Battlefield 2142 plaing SLOW after latest Leopard graphics update

I love using my MacBook Pro to play Battlefield 2142... but ever since I updated the software (which included a Leopard graphics update) the graphics are choppy, the play is stalling and generally slow.
What gives? It was working great before the update!?

I had the same problem with 5.3 and went back to 5.2 in order to play vid games. I saw 5.4 and thought befor I tried it Id call apple tech support to see what the deal is. I didnt get a straight answer. I am going to wait on the game manufactures to see if an update is planned. other wise I may have to get a microsoft dedicated machine for all my vid games. and it doesnt make sence to have to purchase 2 laptops.
