Graphics Card Dilemma... 9800 Pro or 9600 Pro

I have a dual 867 G4 in which I have just recently upgraded the stock graphics card to the new dual PC/Mac ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. I now have the opportunity to install a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro which is the genuine Mac version and not a PC reflashed one.
My dilemma is should I change the cards? Which one would give me better graphic performance when playing World of Warcraft (the only game I play on a computer)?

Well the 9800 is the faster card but the thing I never really liked about it was that it requires connection to your computer's internal power supply for operation. ATI recommends a 300-Watt power supply or greater to ensure normal system operation.
Another benefit to the 9600 is that it has two DVI ports and one of them is dual link if you ever wanted to drive Apple's monster 30" display.
To answer your ultimate question though the card that will give you better WOW performance is the 9800.

I'm sorry, but you can only replace the hard drive and the RAM. The rest of the hardware is soldered onto the logic board, so it's not possible to replace it

Only at the point of ordering from the Apple store. Select the required Video card at that point, because it can't be changed later.

how will i increase the shared memory of the graphic card of macbook pro 13-inch, early 2011 from 4gb memory?

The current version of Mavericks is 10.9.4. To update yours download and install OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
You can upgrade RAM to the maximum your model will support. That would be:
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Which graphics cards are Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) compatible?

I suspect my graphics card is bad (though I could be wrong).  At boot I hear the Apple sound but get no visuals whatsoever.  No grey or blue or any other kind of screen.  I tried resetting PRAM, holding shift, holding option, nothing works.  The computer is stuck at the phase where the graphics card fan is on overdrive and it does not ever stop spinning.  The card is an ATI Radeon that came stock with the Mac.
I found this article which shows which cards are compatible.
MY QUESTION: Are these the ONLY graphics cards my Mac Pro will support?  Or can I install any PCI-E graphics card?

  • Graphics cards for Studio Pro 2

I installed Studio Pro 2 in my Power G4 and Final Cut2 won't open because of the Graphics card that is in my computer, which is, the GeForce4 Ti 4600.
What graphics card do I need? Do I have another option?

    That's a very ticky question.
Look at the system requirements here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html
Unless you have 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4 (minimum requirement)
you may not be able to run some of the applications
no matter what video card you have.

  • Two graphics card on macbook pro which one do I use?

I have two graphics cards on my macbook pro. ADM random 6490m (256mb vram) and Intel HD graphics 3000 (512mb vram). My question is which one should I use? I don't do any hardcore gaming or photoshop. I guess that I am just looking for the best display and least buffering if that even has anything to do with the graphics card. I just want to get the most out of my macbook. I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Your MBP more or less chooses which graphics card to use automatically.  In System Preferences>Energy Saver, check Automatic graphics switching.  When it's checked on, it will use the higher power and higher quality dedicated AMD 6490 when you're plugged into the wall, and uses the Intel 3000HD when on battery.
I have downloaded gfxCardStatus to give me more control over which graphics card to use.  There are times I might want the AMD while on battery, even though it runs hotter and uses more battery life.
Either card will do well with HD movies, though I notice a lot more artifacts with the Intel 3000 when the movie has a lot of action or explosions or sounds.  If you want to do hardcore gaming, you need the AMD of course.  Photoshop is more dependent on the central processor rather than the graphics card, so I'm not sure you'd have much issue using either one.

  • HELP! Upgrading Graphics Card on Mac Pro 2009

    Hi all,
I'm interested in upgrading my current graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB to something with more memory.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which brand to go with that'll be compatible with my Mac Pro 2009 model and will work well under OSX Mavericks.
I really dont want to break the bank. Need a good amount of GDDR5 ram for Adobe Creative Cloud mostly. Would also like to run some gaming on PC Bootcamp drive under Windows 7 (Titanfall, Crysis, Battlefield, etc). However that's all secondary, thanks for your help.

LOTS of choices, depends if you want ones that will work without fuss (ATI 5770 & 5870 plus Mac edition EVGA 680 and Sapphire 7950) still give you boot screens if you option boot.
If you don't care about boot screens, you can use almost any recent ATI or Nvidia card. If you only boot into OSX, you can live without boot screens.

  • Graphics Card for Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008)

    Hello all,
I'm finally in the market to purchase a graphics card this faithful sidekick for gaming-related reasons. But, there are a few things I'd like to know before I really get elbow-deep in researching to find the perfect one for the price.
First, I know the Mac edition GPUs have EFI. Is the sole purpose of EFI to provide the boot screen for the Mac? Surely that's not that big of a loss if I chose to purchase a non-Mac-specific GPU. Furthermore, I hope to keep my old 8800 installed as well. Would there be a way to negate the loss of the boot screen while maintaining the hardware performance for the better GPU?
Second, it can be difficult to find a comprehensive list of system requirements in some cases. What is the noticeable negative impact I should expect if I chose, say, a Sapphire 7950 ME, which (if I'm not mistaked) mentions requirements of an early/late 2009 Mac Pro? I'm not very knowledgeable of hardware compatibility ratings in general, so any information (no matter how snidely toned) is welcome.
    Thank you
    Bugg

At 10.8.3 Apple quietly added a whole lot more Drivers for cards not previously seen.
At the same time, cards that previously did not show a picture AT ALL on a Mac started working (except boot screens). This is said to be due to some research NVIDIA did. They figured out a way to include EFI in the Driver in Mac RAM and make it work as if it were in the card's Firmware.
Some Users who do not regularly boot back-and-forth to Windows or use diagnostic "snag keys" love their faster cards and claim not to miss Boot Screens. The only ones to complain have been those taken by surprise by the dark screen at Satrtup.
You are correct that the 7950 MacEdition says it requires a Mac Pro 4,1 2009 or better. The last time I posted that, another user piped up, "it works in my 2008" [but possibly slightly slower due to slightly slower slots].

  • Can I use two graphics card in Mac Pro

In order to use the CUDA advantage in Adobe Premiere Pro I bought an NVIDA Quadro FX4800. The original graphics processor in my Mac Pro (mid2010) is a ATI Radeon HD 5770. Can I use both cards? How do I ensure that Premiere is using the CUDA architecture if both cards are installed? Does a graphics card work if no monitor is attached to it?

Newer cards have minidisplay port and then use MDP to DVI (active dual link for higher resolution).
Yes you can have an ATI and Quadro or GTX.
Most people, based on cost/performance go with newest Nvidia instead.
You can run up against the limits of having two 6-pin aux power connections available.

  • Imac Graphics cards with Premiere Pro cs6

    Hello
I just changed over to Premiere Pro cs6 from avid and fcp 7/x. I am already sure i made the right decision. I love the interface, i really love it! and cant wait to get stuck into it properly.
I just bought a brand new, all singing all dancing 27 inch imac full spec 32gb RAM with a NIVIDA Geforce GTX 680MX 2048mb card. However pro cs6 by default is using the “Mecuary playback engine sofware only” instead of the “Mecuary playback engine Acceleration [CUDA] and i cant change it. Does it cs6 not support this card and if so will it in the future?
Any help would be greatly apericated!
    Kind regards

    Hi Paul

I was just onto  Adobe and they told me that they could not assist.
Can you tell me who you death with?
I am really keen to get this card running!

  • Graphic card on MacBook pro 17 inch fails

    Hello
my MacBook Pro screen stays black and after check up it is the graphic card nvidia which has failed. It was brought to my attention that Apple had a recall on Mac book pro from 2007 and 2008 and I believe mine is one of them. Now the issue is Apple considers this computer vintage, so a third party will have to do the repair. My question to Apple is: will they pay for this repair?

Nope - you're stuck with the Intel 4000. If you wanted a higher-performance GPU, you should have bought a 15".
    Sorry,

  • Issues with graphic card on Macbook Pro 2011

I just having problem with starting my Macboook. First, at start screen (gray background with the apple logo) appears pink/red horizontal lines over all the screen. Then, when i'm using my computer, screen goes black for no reason and i need to force restart to turn on the Mac.
I can see that many people is having the same problem. ¿Someone knows what's going on? I can't believe this is happening to a "HIGH QUALITY" expensive computer. This seems happening to 2011 Macbook Pros...
    Joaquín.

I had a similar problem on my iMac some years ago, and it was due to a graphic card failure, so I think it is the same problem for you. As it is a hardware problem, the only option is to take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get it fixed: you will get it fixed for free if your Mac is in warranty or if there is a replacement program.

  • Graphics card crash - MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    Hi,
Yesterday I was playing Age of Empires III for Mac, and at the start of a Skirmish mission, where there wasn't much going on yet, the game seized, and then after a while the screen started flickering to black in these big horizontal chunks... I was unable to quit, restart, force quit, nothing.
Pretty much the whole bottom of the screen went black, while a middle part was flashing on and off.
I'm afraid there might be something wrong with my graphics card.
Here's the crash report after I force-shutdown my MBP, and started it again:
Also, the MacBook Pro is only a few months old and there seems to be other problems:
    1. There's dust under the glass of my screen!
    2. When I try to put a CD in, it gets caught on some stuff, and I have to jimmy it around to get it inside
    3. The bottom of the laptop creeks really loud when it's on my lap (which isn't often, but still, worrying and not very Apple-ish noise every time I handle it), the case moves, etc.
What should I do? I've had laptops repaired in the Apple Store a few times before, and they always ended up coming up worse than they went in. New problems, etc.

    Hi
The dust & cd & creaking won't get better, regrettably - so back it would go, for me anyway - unless you really feel it'll be made worse.
Later mbp's have an auto graphic switching setting in System Prefs-Energy Saver - try switching that off -
    assuming the crashes are repeatable.
