Graphics Card Replacement Help

Greetings - A trip to the Genius Bar has confirmed that I have a bad graphics card (ATI Radeon 9600) in my PowerPC G5. It's working again for the time being, but needs to be replaced. The Apple Genius I worked with assured me that I could purchase and replace the card on my own (yikes but I'm willing to give it a go), but that particular card does not seem to be available and I want to be sure to use a suitable replacement. I've read through quite a few of the posts related to this topic, but as I am totally new to all of this, much of the discussion is beyond me.
I'm wondering about the "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Mac 256MB G5 AGP video card VGA+DVI" recommended by Makman8688 in the recent "Graphics Card Update" post. I do a lot of Photoshop work and hope to move into video at some point. Would this card be a suitable replacement?
Many thanks for any guidance.

Hi-
As explained there are 2x, 4x and 8x AGP cards. This is the bus speed multiplier.
The G5 uses the fastest AGP bus, that of the 8x AGP bus.
You mention DVI ports. If you have a requirement for two DVI ports, your card choices then become limited to cards with two DVI ports, or to OEM cards with ADC and DVI ports.
ADC ports can use a simple adapter to make them DVI compatible.
For video work, any card faster than a Radeon 9800 Pro should be considered.
A relatively common, and very nice graphics card is the Geforce 6800 Ultra. This card has 2 DVI ports and the power to run HD resolutions.
It does, however, cost $200-$280.
If you don't need two DVI ports, then the Geforce 6200 card is an option, but not necessarily a power house type of card.
It is a bit better than the 9600, however, with a used 9650 being an option as well.
A Radeon 9800 Pro or XT will be quite a bit faster than the 9600, but are both limited to 1 DVI port.
These cards are better for video than the 6200 or the 9600.
The Pro sells for from around $95 up to $185, with the XT selling for $120-$190.

  • IMac 2011 graphics card replacement program - service says no to me!

    Hello everyone,
I have a mac with the exact specifications that are stated here in the graphics card replacement program: iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program
And the exact symptoms as well. Computer was taken to a service that is approved by Apple, but as I'm in a different country, it's not an Apple store itself. After doing diagnostics for a few weeks, they told me that this does not apply to me. They that the serial number doesn't note that Apple covers anything.
I have no receipts or anything, had no Apple care either, but this is a replacement statement by Apple and even after having the serial number and seeing that it is the exact model having the exact symptoms - can they still say no to me? What should I do? There are no Apple stores like in other countries and if I took it to one of the official dealer stores, they're just gonna take the computer to the same official service provider. It is really unfair at the moment and I don't know what to do.
P.s. Should I post my serial number here so maybe someone who works in an official store could help me clear up if it really does not apply?

I had to have my graphic card replaced.  I was told that I was under the 3 year from date of purchase time limit so got it for free.  How long has it been since you purchased your iMac?

  • IMac G5 Graphic Card Replacement for blue screen problem

When I turn on iMac, I only see blue screen, the apple technician said Need to replace graphic card,  Nvidia Gforce 7600GT 256.
1, can it install in IMac?  Seem like it work for PC?
2,  I had blue screen problem several time,  I think I turn on iMac too long, so it burn out graphic card.
3,  I have 2007 G5 24" screen model,  is any durable and afford graphic card you recommend?
Where to buy for cheaper price?
Do I need to change mother board?
4,  can I replace it by myself?  Any picture or video for graphic card replacement?
    Thank you.

If you look around, you might be able to find someone who will replace just the chip on the graphics card, which is what usually fails. It will take someone highly skilled; they really have to know what they're doing--it's not an ordinary soldering job.
Here's someone who found a non-Apple service to do this, and it proved to be far less expensive than a full logic board replacement. But I think this was in the UK.

  • Apple graphic card replacement

    Hi,
I own mid 2011 iMac 3,4 i7 model with 6790 2GB graphic card which is broken.
Found Apple replacement program for those cards :
    http://9to5mac.com/2013/08/16/apple-opens-graphics-card-replacement-program-for- some-mid-2011-imacs/
Can someone tell me is this program available for Europe, (Croatia or Bosnia & Herzegovina) ?
    Best regards,
    Dzenox

    Thanks for replies,
I found almost  everything what you already mention here but it will be easy if would live in US.
Europe is also not a big problem, but my country Bosnia&Herzegovina does include some other conditions due to fact that  isn't listed at Apple page of countries.
We do have some resellers, but I want a clean proof so I can get some benefits from it.
Btw: it is the second time I have to change graphic card and I dont want to be charged.

  • I am looking for a new graphics card to help with my 1.5GB files in InDesign.

I am getting "Out of memory " indications as my files gets to the maximum number of pages in my magazine. I am guessing that I need a larger capacity graphics card to help during the construction of the magazine. Any thoughts?

I have a Lenovo desktop with win8 and 16GB memory. I have an upgraded graphics card with 2GB memory. I am using CS6. My free drive space is in the 300GB range. I keep all data off line on a 1TB Buffalo drive. I am producing a 52 page color magazine that is filled with graphics and ads (40%). I rarely import graphics files and normally always link them. As I am moving around my file sometimes processing is slow. I have turned off the pre-flight and only use it when I am ready to go to the printer. That helps. I wopuld like to get back to sub-second response time and thought a better performing graphics card would help.
    Mike.

  • Graphics Card Replacement Suggestion

My current ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card fan is making a loud noise and I need a suggestion for a compatible graphics card replacement.  I don't play video games but I do watch streaming videos from HULU, Netflix and YouTube often.  I have a dual monitor setup as well.
Current PC; HP Pavilion Elite HPE-110f running Window 7.

    Hi:
I would go with the Radeon HD 6450.
Get one of the fanless models listed. Then you have no fan to make noise or conk out on you (such as the ASUS or Sapphire cards listed at the link below).
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=HD%206450&bop=...
The card has a maximum power draw of less than 30W and it is the optional card offered on HP business desktops with 240W power supplies.
Make sure you uninstall your old graphics card and driver in the device manager, shut down and unplug the PC before installing your new video card.

  • Problem with MSI GTX 960 GAMAING 4G graphics card - Please help

So I just bought an MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G graphics card. My problem is that it seems to randomly decide when it wants to run fine at 1215 MHz, and when it wants to downclock to around 135 MHz. Today for example, I was playing Witcher 3: Game was running fine (~55 FPS) for a few hours because the card was performing at maximum. Then, out of nowehere, I dropped to about 4 FPS. I checked Afterburner, and the core clock went down to 135 MHz, while I was still in game. The card is not overheating during gaming. I have the fans set to 35% speed at all times and the GPU never got hotter than about 50c.
I have the latest nVidia drivers installed. I even tried an earlier set of nVidia drivers and the same things happened. Also yes, it is firmly seated in the PCI-E slot and yes, the power cable is firmly plugged in.
    PC Specs:
    Intel Core i5 Devils Canyon
    Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI mobo
    GSkill Sniper 16GB RAM
MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G graphics card
    Antec EDGE 550w PSU
I understand these newer graphics cards have power saving settings built in, but I have my nVidia control panel settings to "Prefer maximum performance" and it doesn't seem to help. It seems my card is putting itself into power saver mode at will. I suppose my PSU could be the culprit even though the recommended PSU is only 400w, and I have 550w. Any ideas?

So it turns out I wasn't running the latest BIOS for my motherboard. I updated my BIOS and cleared CMOS. Everything was running fine for a couple hours. I was playing Witcher 3 at full clock and memory speed. GPU temp was hovering around 62 deg c at 60 FPS. Then after a couple hours, the game crashed. Rebooted my computer, and now I am back to the same issue where the card won't run at full speed in a 3D application. Even ran the Valley benchmark tool again and the card didn't increase speed to compensate.
Do I have a defective card? If so I will get it replaced from Newegg.
Also I don't know if I am running the latest vbios. GPU-Z says I have 84.06.14.00.F3
If there is a newer vbios, I can try to update and see if that does anything. I will try anything before returning this to Newegg. My old video card bit the dust and artifacts everywhere, so I don't have a temp replacement.

  • 1st Gen Mac Pro Graphics Card replacement??

I have a 1st generation mac pro and the nvidia geforce 7300 GT graphics card died.
what can I replace this with that is relatively inexpensive? Does it need to be 256 or 512 MB?

Thank You. That isn't quite my situation. There is a back on April 11th. 2010 and still unsolved. That is very disappointing considering there are a lot of people who are genius with technical issues on this forum.
It booted up OK from a long power down time but if I have to restart for any reason or power down and start up within a few minutes, I will have nothing on the display (black). The little light is on and if you touch the button the light will goes to sleep but nothing on the display. I checked everything and tried every combinations. What I ended up with is; 1. to leave the computer on forever until the end of time but I can't because sometimes the fan would come on high and stay on., 2. if I have to restart, I have to unplug both power chords and wait at least half an hour to forty five minutes then plug everything back in and start. Most of the time it will work. This puzzled me.
Everywhere I posted this problem, I've had zero answer. There must be some one who knows this issue and solved it before. Hello! Are you out there? Help me please!

Not sure what my options are. Can anyone please advise?
My computer is HP Pavilion, System Model 500-214
    Windows 8.1
Graphics Card currently is AMD Radeon HD 8570D

Not sure what else you would need to know.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
You will need a graphics card in the range of this NVIDIA GTX 660.  Additionally you need to replace the 300 watt power supply with a 500+ watt power supply such as this Corsair CX600 which is on sale for $45 after rebate.

  • Satellite C50-A-1DV - Graphics card replacement

Hypothetically, If I wanted to replace the graphics card in my Satellite C50-A-1DV, how would I go about it?
And If i had to send my laptop in, how much would it cost?

At first I must say that GPU replacement or upgrade is officially not supported and any action in this direction is on your own risk.
Please note that notebook disassembling will cancel valid warranty.
But we are discussing hypotheticallyabout all this.
What you must do is to obtain new GPU, disassemble your notebook, exchange it and put your notebook together.
On some notebook models GPU is fixed on the mainboard and cannot be exchanged. I dont know how it is on your machine.
    > And If i had to send my laptop in, how much would it cost?
If GPU is defective and warranty still valid best option for you is o contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. In case that you want to do upgrade, Toshiba service will not help you with this.
Can you please tell us what is the problem with your machine and original graphic card?

  • Graphics Card replacement on Equium L20-264

    Hi,
I'm querying on a request of can I replace the graphics card in my laptop or add one as I heard it is integrated with my graphics card I have an ATI Xpress 200M capable of 1.4 GHZ of processor speed. Is there any chance?
I will be able to upgrade my g card I have everything ready for my WXP to vista I just need to get a graphics card with enough power to play the latest games (Halo 2 For Windows Vista Brought Then Realized - don't Work). I am looking for an Ati or Nvidia G Card please help.
    Thanks Nick

    Hi there,
unfortunately there is no chance to upgrade your graphics card since the chip is hardwired on the minboard. So you dont have luck and you have to live with that youve got in your machine.
    Sorry dude.
    Cheers

  • Getting graphics card replaced under Apple Care, How?

    Hi everyone
I have a Mac Pro, 3Ghz Quad with 5 GB of RAM and a Radeon X1900 XT and Apple Cinema 30".
For the first few months that I had it I could play games fine on it. Then slowly it started malfunctioning on anything that is GPU intensive. At first the monitor would black out in game and then the computer would restart. I had the machine cleaned and that fixed the problem for a while. Then problems started to appear again. The machine would completely hard freeze while in-game.
I came on here and asked about the problem and found out that a lot of people who play WOW on 30" Cinema Displays with Radeon X 1900 XTs were having the same problem. It was due to the fact that the graphics card overheats (bad design on apples part). I have never played WOW but I get the same problem. They suggested using smcFanControl to up the idle speed of my PCIe/HDD fan (the fan still runs within its rated RPMs). This helped for a while when I ran the fan at 3x its normal idle speed. But I really didn't enjoy hafting to go and change my fan speed before playing a game, and games within windows wouldn't work at all.
Now my games ether hard freeze a few minuets in (under OS X or Windows), or I get graphics glitches (polygons get stretched out into infinity off of different objects). This is unacceptable considering the machine is hardly 8 months old (and I have Apple Care on it), also considering I have done nothing wrong or out of the ordinary and the GPU just deteriorated into this state on its own.
So I was wondering how I can go about getting Apple to replace my GPU for free under the Apple Care. I'm located in Guatemala and there is an apple authorized repair place here.

Call AppleCare. Open a problem report/ticket on this.
    * Order parts (Do-it-Yourself)
    * Request a repair online
    * Check your repair status
    * Service FAQ
Before you seek service, check out our Mac Pro support articles to see if an article can help you resolve the issue. For information about getting hardware service, see our Mac Pro service FAQ and Contacting Apple Support pages, or get help from these options:
    * Find a retail Apple Store near you
    * Find a local Apple Authorized Service Provider
    * Order a replacement part or upgrade
    * Check my repair status
Have AppleCare Protection Plan? Download TechTool Deluxe
    http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/
I would also run Apple Hardware Test in the meantime. There is suppose to be a revised 2nd generation Radeon. I know it has been discussed heavily on the WoW forums.

  • Adobe photoshop cs4 graphics card acceleration help!

    Need a little help,
everytime i start cs4, it says "adobe photoshop cs4 now includes graphics card acceleration.  we recomend you vist your video card manufacturers website and download and install latest drives.
I am running vista 64 bit and a ati radeon hd 4800 series card "4870 to be exact" and under properties it is 8.612.0.0, but when i follow the adobe link and it brings me to the site it has version 9.5??  i clicked update driver and it says its upto date, is this a problem, and why does it show this everytime photoshop starts?
    thanks

Go to this site and download the 9.9 driver set. The 9.5 driver set had a streaming problem that had to be fixed with a hotfix. I have the 4870 also and the 9.9 drivers are stable and have no issues with PS CS4 on vista 64 bit.
    http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx
Sometimes it is better not to change drivers if you don't have issues. But the 9.5 set has issues.
Make sure you un-install the old drivers. When you click on the Icon and start the install it will unpack as normal but you will come upon a screen to install or uninstall. Choose uninstall to remove the old driver package. Reboot. Then click on the icon again, it will unpack and you will get the screen again so choose install. Reboot after install.
If I remember correctly the 9.5 drivers, after install, did not show the reboot screen. You still have to reboot.
