Graphics card replacement: PCI-X or AGP? What's the best GPU out there?

Hi everyone,
I want to upgrade 2 Dual G5 (2.0 and 2.5 GHz, both Dual Processors, not the newer Dual Core). Mactracker says that both have 1 AGP and 3 PCI-X Slots. Currently both Macs have the stock ATI Radeon 9600 XT with 128 MB VRAM in the AGP-Slot.
Now I'm wondering which replacement GPU gives the best "bang for buck" and whether I should go with an AGP or PCI-X model? I don't need 4 monitors so the old GPUs will be removed. What do you think is the fastest available GPU for these G5?
Thanks a lot!
Björn

Hi-
The ATI X800XT or the Geforce 6800 Ultra are the two top guns in OEM graphics cards for 8x AGP G5's. This page shows relevant data and performance of the top performance cards that have been available for the G5.
However, all are very hard to find, with OEM cards bringing a premium price. Flashed PC cards (converted to Mac ROM) of equivalent spec/family, will operate as a true Mac card, though none will have ADC ports.
The top gun of all the 8x AGP cards that can be used in the G5, is the Geforce 7800 GS.
These cards are available on eBay, or you can flash your own, using the tools/resources at The Mac Elite.

what is the best price that some of you guys have found for buying the ipod photo.

well i jsut sold my ipod photo for $220 to a guy i know. But i have done some loking online at ebay and the general ballpark price its going for is $250 plus or minus with what and condition its being offered. I might also say that this value might decrease more as time for the new ipod becomes more mainstream. why are you asking?

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

  • What is the best phoen out there?

I've had the Droid incredible now for two years and it's time to upgrade. I tend to get a little confused when I read the actual reviews of the phone. To me it seems like all smart phones are basically the same. When I read the reviews and they start talking about the different specs, it all gets a bit too technical for me. So, I decided before I started reading reviews I would narrow down the process by way of popular vote. Can anyone be so kind as to recommend which phone is the best.
    Thanks

When deciding on a phone, you need to determine how you will use it.  What features do you want?  Your statement that all smart phones are alike isn't really true.  Android phones are somewhat similar, but each manfacturer tweaks their phones to make them different.  Ask yourself questions like do I want a large/small phone, a slide-out keyboard, access to the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, do you want a long lasting battery, etc.  Once you have narrowed the field down to two or three phones, go to the VZW Smart Phone Resource Center, https://smartphones.verizonwireless.com/#/zip%7C47802/page%7C250, and read the reviews of those who have the phones.  I arrange the reviews by the lowest first to see if there is a pattern of problems that users complain about.  If I see a pattern of issues that concern me, I eliminate that phone from consideration.  If you don't want a large phone, which most of the Samsung phones are, you might look at the Razr M.  It has a large screen, but the phone itself isn't too big.  I like Samsungs.  The GS3 is an awesome phone, as are the Razr and the RaxrMaxx, but they are all large and somewhat heavy.  Get feed back from your friends about their phones.
    Good luck.

  • QUESTION: what is the BEST armband out there to avoid sweat build-up?

I've just finished running with my Nano 4G and a Belkin armband, but the workout ended abruptly, most probably because of sweat between the transmitter and the iPod...having read several reviews and different opinions, I still don't know which one is the BEST armband on the basis of the following conditions:
    1 - normal biceps (not skinny);
    2 - absolute protection from sweat and moisture for the iPod and the Nike+ kit;
    3 - comfortable.
Is it the Apple one? The newest Nike one? Other?
Any thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated...THANKS!

  • What are the frameworks available out there

I just want to know what are the frameworks available out there for Desktop application ?

I want to create a standalone application in Java and I heard that I can make it easier if I follow a framework.
After having a look at frameworks for Java, it just completely confuse me, as it is very different from frameworks for Flash (which I do most).
The java framework covers much more stuff than what Flash framework covers (which mainly regulate the way how the SWF communicate with the server and the design of the classes )
I still wonder what is the definition of framework in Java ? Do I really need one for a standalone application, or I just need to follow the MVC design for my classes ?
I just need to get it right before I actually work on my program.
    Thanks.

  • What is the best practice for BADI?

Hi all, this is my first post.
I've seen many BADI examples here at SDN and elsewhere where after defining the badi at SE18, and the implementation at SE19, you just create a Z program and call the badi and its method. No brainer. I know how to use the new badi of 'get badi' and 'call badi' instead of the classic exit handler. So I do know how to call a badi properly, in a Z program.
However, SAP's intention of BADI is to replace the traditional user exit. My question is how do you guys use badi in replacement of user exit?
User exits have 'call customer-functions' where you put your code in the Z includes, without touching standard SAP programs. Where/how do i link standard programs to call my badi? Even if I implement a standard bapi, my implementation is a Z. And a standard bapi and its methods are, well, standard. How do I call the Z stuff.
    1. If using cmod, call customer-function and the z include to call my badi and method, how does that replace user exit if I'm still using cmod???
    2. I've seen people add includes in a standard function-pool. The Z include calls the badi. But doing so is a modification, which I thought is to be avoided.
So my question is what is the best practice out there, how do you guys use badi for enhancement in replacement of user exit? In combination of cmod, adding includes in standard programs, other methods?

    Hi Shawn,
    Welcome to SDN
First thing, you got the whole concept of BADI partially wrong.
BADI are like user-exits only and the difference is it uses ABAP OO an some more functionalities.
As you find in the code CALL CUSTOMER FUNCTION, the same way there are exit handlers for BADI.
User Exits are not completely removed. They are still there and will be there. Its just the extra flexibility with BADI.

  • What are the best external backup battery choices for the iPod Touch 4G?

    Hello,
I am so disappointed with the battery life on my iPod Touch 4G, even when I turn off location services and notifications and put it in airplane mode.
As such, I realize that I am going to have to get an external backup battery, even though I don't like the idea of carrying around yet another item.
What are the best choices out there, especially any ultra-portable (aka small and non-bulky) ones?  I came across this Juice Pack Air - iPod Touch 4G Case, which seems like the perfect solution, but it is on back order and seems to have been so for a good amount of time.  Who knows when it will be in stock again.
TIA for any and all help!

  • What are the best anti keylogger and anti-RAT softwares for Mac?

Here's an article from March that lists the top anti-keylogger software. http://www.macping.com/top-10-software-that-can-effectively-block-mac-keylogger- programs-on-your-computer/#comments
But it wasn't very helpful when it came to choosing one. Has anyone done extensive tests on these to see which ones are most effective?
And what if your computer has been compromised in other ways?
What's the best software out there for giving you piece of mind without having to wipe the entire computer?

If you have reason to suspect that someone has installed a keylogger on your system, erasing it and reinstalling everything from scratch is going to be the only way you can be certain that the keylogger is removed. Any anti-malware software could miss something, regardless of the developer's claims.
As to prevention, the best approach is to just make sure that no one has physical access to your computer without your supervision and to keep the system secure from remote access by turning off unneeded services and using strong administrator passwords. Physical access, remote access or trickery are the only ways someone can install a keylogger onto your system.
    Regards.

  • I'm a new iPad user, what's the best looking case?

    Just got a iPad an
D wanted to know what's the best case out there from my new apple fam n__n

That is one loaded question. As with beauty, the best looking case is in the eye of the beholder, and the same for the best case. If there were only a few cases available from one or two case manufacturers only, maybe an easier question to answer, but there are a number of different types and styles of cases available from a significant numbed of case manufacturers.
