Graphics card upgrade - PowerMac G4 QuickSilver

Hi everyone!
As BDAqua probably remembers, I installed an ATI Radeon 9600 in my G4 QuickSilver. It was slow as ****, and after selling the card I realised that the problem was the 733MHz G4 CPU. I now have a Dual 800MHz G4 in it and graphics performance improved a lot. I found a spare FX5500 with a REALLY noisy fan, flashed it, taped pins 3 and 11 and put in the G4. It works fine but:
- the fan noise is really unbearable and it isn't worth replacing it (it's attached to the heatsink so I should replace the whole heatsink - no way)
- no Core Image support in Leopard (no translucent menubar, no graphic acceleration etc)
- only VGA port is working, so awful image on the display
So I'm thinking of buying a new graphics card, but I don't know what to buy. I have an X800 Pro from Sapphire that isn't compatible with Mac ROMs, so I can't flash it (plus it wasn't recognised at all in my G4, even with taped pins, whereas in my G5 was listed as a "VGA compatible controller" or something like that) and a strange revision of the Radeon 9250 that doesn't even work anymore.
I would really like a fan-less card (a quiet fan would be fine as well) but my priority is to have good graphics performance and A WORKING DVI OUTPUT!!
I was thinking to buy an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB on eBay that I could flash, but I'll wait for your advice. Which card should I buy?
Thank you!

The graphics chipset is integrated into the logic board and cannot be replaced or upgraded.
Are you sure you saw one for the MacBook Pro and not the Mac Pro desktop tower?

Slimline s5-1010 - HDMI graphics card upgrade, what graphics cards will work in slimline box?  Cheap will do, under 100.  Has 1 PCI Express x16, but the slot on back of pc looks about 2" too short for this?

    Hi-
I think you will find there are more users of the ATI Radeon 9800 that DON'T have a 300w PSU, than those that do. It would leave out the majority of the G4 line if it were absolutely necessary. As I see it, it isn't absolutely necessary, and, it is also the ONLY higher end upgrade graphics card commercially produced for 2x, 4x AGP systems, most of which, DON'T have a 300w PSU.
My Sawtooth has a 237w PSU, and the 9800, and my processor upgrade, and 2 internal drives, all work just fine!
As for the piggyback connection, that is how you connect the power to the 9800. A splitter molex cable is used to split power from the superdrive connection, between the superdrive and the 9800.

  • Graphics card upgrade - which?

    Hey everybody!
I'm a proud owner of a PowerMac G4 Sawtooth, which I'm about to upgrade. So, I'm currently looking for a decent graphics card (the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Sapphire (128MB VRAM) caught my eye).
Now, I found out, that my PowerMac only sports a speedy AGP 2x port, and the ATI card in question only is compatible to AGP 4x or 8x ports. What should I do? Buy it anyway and hope it runs? Probably not. So, could anybody please make a suggestion, which graphics card would be a more appropriate one for me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Greetings, Christian
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The thing you must know is that any standard PC-Videocard will NOT work out of the box in your mac, the ROM of the video card will have to be flashed with a mac rom in order for it to work (its a big hassle, btw check out http://strangedogs.proboards40.com - its a mac video card flashing site) aside from this, you can always check out flebay for mac video cards, and pc-flashed-to-mac ones that will work in your Sawtooth. As for the AGP 2x port, it should be OK to use any card in it because 4x/8x cards are usually backwards compatible to 2x, but you may want to check it out. Sapphire's site should have information about that.

  • PC graphic cards on Powermacs

Is there a way to make a PC graphics card compatible 100% with a PowerMac G5? Maybe a firmware upgrade or something similar? The prices for Mac graphics cards is way too exagerate. I'm looking mostly for Nvidia cards.

there are several pc cards that make themselves amicable to flashing to mac. seems to be more abundant for the G4 PowerMacs. Its possible with the x800 but you don't have access to ADC and i think you only get one monitor support. it really helps to have an old pci video card to help with the flashing part. there is also a problem with the rom. sometimes the mac rom is too big for the pc card and it has to be altered to fit or a new chip soldered to the pc card. its been a while since i looked into it and decided it wasn't a worth while endeavour for me since i need ADC for my 23" Apple Cinema HD. it also seemed like a huge investment in my time to save $150-180 bucks. others may have different opinions. if memory serves correct - take a look at http://www.strangedogs.com in the forums section. lots of info there.
fwiw, i've nothing against hacking as i've hacked into my motorola phone seems many times to unlock obex, etc.

  • PM G4 (AGP Graphics) - Best Graphics card Upgrade?

    Hi all,
I have a PM G4 (AGP Graphics) and would like to upgrade the graphics card. Can anyone suggest the best option? I am currently looking at ATI Radeon 9200 Pro 128MB or nVidia gForce 7800 256MB.
One of the parameters for the choice, besides price and performance, is how silent is the card.
Thank you for any insight you can share.

    Hi-
AGP Graphics, the Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet, are both 2x AGP machines.
The best card for either is a Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition.
The Radeon 9200 is a low performance card.
The Geforce 7800 GS is not compatible with 2x AGP machines, but may be used in the Digital Audio, Quicksilver and MDD machines.

Any card with a fan will make some additional noise.
Cards without fans, though, are usually low performance.
Third party coolers can greatly reduce noise.

Hello. I have the HP Pavlilion dv6t-7000 with the NVIDIA GT650M 1GB grpahics card. Now because of my work, i need to extends my graphic card memory. So I want to ask if my laptop is possible to upgrade to GT650M 2GB card.
My product number is A5F74AV. And my wannary is end on 8/24/2013.
And this laptop is a gift of my aunt from USA, and I'm living in Viet Nam now. So if yes, can HP Vietnam do the upgrade for me? My aunt's family is very busy so I can't resend my laptop and ask them to return to you.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi:
The only way to upgrade the video card in your notebook is to replace the entire motherboard which would cost as much as buying a new notebook with better graphics.
If you had HP do the upgrade, it would probably cost more than buying 2 notebooks with better graphics than yours.

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion a1020n Desktop Computer and it's PTGD-LA (Goldfish3) motherboard. According to the specs, your computer has no dedicated graphics card expansion slot. The only expansion slots available on this system are three traditional and/or conventional PCI slots. One of these slots currently contains a K56flex modem.
Here is a selection of PCI graphics cards that may meet your requirements. Please note that these cards may also require you to upgrade your power supply as well.

    Hi,
The main problem you are going to face is your PC only has a 160W Power Supply Unit.  Without upgrading your PSU, you will struggle to find any card that will improve your graphics capability.

  • Processor and graphics card upgrade for hp dc5100 MT(EF633US)

Can someone kindly tell me a variety of Intel processors and graphic cards which i can install in my pc coz right now i'm using Intel pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz and Intel 82915G/GV/910GL express chipset. but i would like to upgrade to a faster processor and a graphics card which can play games which require large graphic memory (eg FIFA 2013,GTA 5.etc)

    Hi:
Personally, I wouldn't invest the money to upgrade that PC.
You would be better off getting an off lease newer dc5800 MT or dc7800/dc7900 model that has a PCIe x16 video slot.
The killer for your model is you can only install a PCI graphics card.
Very inefficient and pretty expensive for what you get in return.
After you install the required microcode update, the best processor I know for sure you can install would be the P4 650.
Below is the link to the quickspecs.  The supported processors are listed on page 7.
I do not know of anyone who that has installed the 651 or 661 processors and got them to work--even though the specs state they are supported.
You can try the 651 or 661 and if you do, please let me know if they worked for you.

  • Processor and Graphics Card Upgrade For HP ProBook 4445s

    Hey guys,
I wanted to ask that  I have a HP4445s with the A6 4400m processor and don't find it enough to play games.
The processor is a little bit slow and the graphics are kind of horrible for a gamer.
I feel like upgrading to a new processor.
The one that  I found nice is the
    AMD FD8350FRHKBOX FX-8350 FX-Series 8-Core Black Edition Processor
I just wanted to ask whether I could upgrade to this.
I also wanted to find out that it says that there are no integrated graphics, so does that mean I will have to purchase a new graphic card?
    Thanks,
    Please reply!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

That is a desktop processor and will not fit in any laptop. Right now some of the HP Support pages are down but I believe you can install an A10 AMD CPU which would improve the graphics just a little. There is no graphics "card" as you might be thinking of. It is a flat motherboard inside the laptop case with all the chips including video soldered on that board. The video comes from within the processor working with helping chips on the motherboard. An A10 processor provides slightly better graphics but nothing that will increase the gaming potential very much. That is a business laptop for doing Powerpoints and Spreadsheets and maybe watching a youtube video or playing a DVD. It is not a gamer. HP now makes the Omen laptop at about $1500 which would handle most high end games.

  • Graphic card upgrade on Satellite A60

My Queston is if there is any possibitity to change my Radeon Mobility 7000 igp of my Satellite A60 for a better card or do i have to by a complete new Mainboard?

    Hello
This theme was discussed a lot of time in the forum and there is a simply and short answer: No, its not possible to upgrade the graphic card.
The card is a little chip which is fixed on the mainboard.
About the motherboard changing: Well, its not very easy because of a exact fitting and compatibility.

  • Graphics card upgrade on my A60?

    Hi,
I've had an A60 with on-board ATI Raedon 7000 shared memory graphics for over a year and have had ongoing problems with crashing. I seem to have (at least temporarally) resolved this issue by reducing the colours to 16m...
I am now using some more graphics intensive programs (games) and wonder if anybody can suggest a way of making things like "Age of Empires III" work faster than 1 frame per second (short of buying a desktop)?
I wouldn't mind upgrading the graphics chip to a card if this is possible but any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Paul.

    Hi
Daniel is right. Its not possible to upgrade the notebook graphic cards.
The notebook technology is very tricky and you cant compare it wit the desktop PC.
By the way: The Age of Empires 3 is newer game and to play it you need a high performance pc and graphic card with good cooling system
