Graphics cards in Macs

Hey guys, I know bugger all about graphics cards. This is where you come in.
I’m tossing up a few options for my next computer. I’m a photographer, and need a Mac. But without shelling out for a Mac Pro, the graphics cards in iMacs and Macbook Pro's seem sub par. I need it to be good for photoshop, video, and graphics intense applications, but it would be pretty awesome if I could run a decent game on it. So...
The new iMac (when maxed out) has a 4gb Nvidia Graphics card. (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-780m). Or without upgrading it has a 2gb version. Both are GDDR5.

How will they go games wise?
Weirdly, both of those chips are for mobile. Why are they in an iMac? And what’s the difference between the card above, and the desktop version: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-780
If I was buying a new MacBook Pro (Laptop), the top version appears to come with both Intel HD 4000, AND an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M card (1gb gddr5.)

Why both? And is 1gb a big jump from my current laptop (intel graphics only).
If you were building a decent gaming PC, how big would your graphics card be? Any other considerations?
Anyone got any experience playing PC games on a Mac (using windows)? Was it *****?
Cheers!

my imac from 2011 or there about
it have an amd radeon hd 6770m 512MB
I play skyrim, rage, gta4, warhammer space marine 40k, borderlands and the likes on it in windows8 pro it performs fine
vram is used for larger textures when rendering out on the video card if one use larger textures then fit in the video ram or used shared system memory as vram the textures have to be transfered back and fourth over the pci-express bus when the gpu needs it and performance take a huge hit
2. Phase one, who make Capture One, advised me to upgrade my graphics card to fix
people who want to sell you something or want to get you of their back in terms of performance of your software will generally tell you something which may or may not be 100% the tooth the whole tooth and nothing but a kick in the teeth
and people who have ther marketing department hype their new lineup like to make it sounds like sliced bread have been reinvented

  • Which graphics cards are Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) compatible?

I suspect my graphics card is bad (though I could be wrong).  At boot I hear the Apple sound but get no visuals whatsoever.  No grey or blue or any other kind of screen.  I tried resetting PRAM, holding shift, holding option, nothing works.  The computer is stuck at the phase where the graphics card fan is on overdrive and it does not ever stop spinning.  The card is an ATI Radeon that came stock with the Mac.
I found this article which shows which cards are compatible.
MY QUESTION: Are these the ONLY graphics cards my Mac Pro will support?  Or can I install any PCI-E graphics card?

  • HELP! Upgrading Graphics Card on Mac Pro 2009

    Hi all,
I'm interested in upgrading my current graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB to something with more memory.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which brand to go with that'll be compatible with my Mac Pro 2009 model and will work well under OSX Mavericks.
I really dont want to break the bank. Need a good amount of GDDR5 ram for Adobe Creative Cloud mostly. Would also like to run some gaming on PC Bootcamp drive under Windows 7 (Titanfall, Crysis, Battlefield, etc). However that's all secondary, thanks for your help.

LOTS of choices, depends if you want ones that will work without fuss (ATI 5770 & 5870 plus Mac edition EVGA 680 and Sapphire 7950) still give you boot screens if you option boot.
If you don't care about boot screens, you can use almost any recent ATI or Nvidia card. If you only boot into OSX, you can live without boot screens.

  • Graphics Card for Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008)

    Hello all,
I'm finally in the market to purchase a graphics card this faithful sidekick for gaming-related reasons. But, there are a few things I'd like to know before I really get elbow-deep in researching to find the perfect one for the price.
First, I know the Mac edition GPUs have EFI. Is the sole purpose of EFI to provide the boot screen for the Mac? Surely that's not that big of a loss if I chose to purchase a non-Mac-specific GPU. Furthermore, I hope to keep my old 8800 installed as well. Would there be a way to negate the loss of the boot screen while maintaining the hardware performance for the better GPU?
Second, it can be difficult to find a comprehensive list of system requirements in some cases. What is the noticeable negative impact I should expect if I chose, say, a Sapphire 7950 ME, which (if I'm not mistaked) mentions requirements of an early/late 2009 Mac Pro? I'm not very knowledgeable of hardware compatibility ratings in general, so any information (no matter how snidely toned) is welcome.
    Thank you
    Bugg

At 10.8.3 Apple quietly added a whole lot more Drivers for cards not previously seen.
At the same time, cards that previously did not show a picture AT ALL on a Mac started working (except boot screens). This is said to be due to some research NVIDIA did. They figured out a way to include EFI in the Driver in Mac RAM and make it work as if it were in the card's Firmware.
Some Users who do not regularly boot back-and-forth to Windows or use diagnostic "snag keys" love their faster cards and claim not to miss Boot Screens. The only ones to complain have been those taken by surprise by the dark screen at Satrtup.
You are correct that the 7950 MacEdition says it requires a Mac Pro 4,1 2009 or better. The last time I posted that, another user piped up, "it works in my 2008" [but possibly slightly slower due to slightly slower slots].

  • DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphicis card & 30" Mac HD monitor

I am a new Mac user, having had Dell desktops all my life. Recently, my Dell W1700 monitor/tv crapped out, and (of course) it is just out of warranty.
This prompted me to by a Mac Book Pro with a 30" HD monitor (to work with the PC also).
    MY QUESTION:
Like many in here, I want to use the Mac HD monitor with the Mac Book Pro as well as the Dell PC (8300 series). I suspect that the cable connections may not be compatible (pins appear to have a different configuration) though the Dell LCD TV/monitor did use DVI cable in conjunction with a separate green audio cable.
I've already read and reviewed how to set up the laptop with the lid closed while utilizing the HD monitor. Now I need to troubleshoot the HD/PC connections.
    Help!
PS-is the spell check feature in this forum messed up or what? I've never had so many idiotic "suggestions".

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
The 30" Apple Cinema Display requires a computer with a dual link DVI equipped graphics card. It can connect to single link DVI, but without a dual link, the 30" ACD will not operate at optimal resolution (2550x1600). The 30" ACD is equipped with a dual link DVI-D connector.
I believe your 5200 has a single link DVI-I (2048x1536 max resolution), which will allow coupling with a DVI-I or DVI-D connector.
    30" ACD supported resolutions:
    2560 x 1600 pixels (optimum resolution)
    2048 x 1280
    1920 x 1200
    1280 x 800
    1024 x 640

  • Display Ports : Adding NVidia GT-120 Graphics Card to Mac Pro

    Hi
Just installed the Base NV GT-120 graphics card in order to use the new Mac Cinema Display 24".
Also still running the original ATI HD 2600 card.
    Installation was easy.....
The ATI card runs a 20" Cinema Display and the 24" is on the new NV card.
GREAT picture on the 24" Display!
Just to let you know....The MDP cannot be the primary port for the display. That is all the dock/menus are all on the "smaller" or display on the DVI port.
UNLESS you re-write the code in terminal....which Apple support advised me not to....
    Any thoughts/ advice?
    Lenny

    1. open your "System Preferences" and click on "Displays".
    2. select the tab "Arrange", you will see two blue rectangles which represent your two displays. you can drag those rectanglea to change the arrangement of your screens.
    3. in one rectangle you see a small white rectangle on top. this is representing your menu bar. just drag the menubar to your desired primary screen. close the preferences and that's it.

  • Can I use two graphics card in Mac Pro

In order to use the CUDA advantage in Adobe Premiere Pro I bought an NVIDA Quadro FX4800. The original graphics processor in my Mac Pro (mid2010) is a ATI Radeon HD 5770. Can I use both cards? How do I ensure that Premiere is using the CUDA architecture if both cards are installed? Does a graphics card work if no monitor is attached to it?

Newer cards have minidisplay port and then use MDP to DVI (active dual link for higher resolution).
Yes you can have an ATI and Quadro or GTX.
Most people, based on cost/performance go with newest Nvidia instead.
You can run up against the limits of having two 6-pin aux power connections available.

  • External graphic card for mac pro (early 2008)

I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) where the graphics card seems to be dead.
I have no replacement and a new one is a little too expensive for what I'm gonna use it for. (400$).
    Also the harddrive died.
So now I have an unconfigured Mac Pro with no display.
I can't figure out if there is a way to boot it and have it somehow share its screen during a first install?
Is there an external USB/firewire graphics card that will act as a master display output already when plugged in?

  • Best graphics card for Mac Pro Early 2008?

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 with the default graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600), and would like to make an upgrade to a better graphics card that will run games smoothly. I'm not an expert with computers at all, but all I know is I would like to buy a graphics card for around $200-$300 (If it's more expensive then that's ok, but preferrably this price range) that will get me the best performance possible. I play games like Minecraft, Skyrim, and Team Fortress 2. Thank you for any help/recommendations you can provide!
Also, I wasn't sure which section to post this in, but feel free to move this thread.

Also, to provide more information (not sure if needed), I have dual monitors and the following specs:
    Processor  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
My two displays are LG ULTRAWIDE Display (2560 x 1080) and LED Cinema Display (24-inch, Late 2008, 1920 x 1200)

  • Best graphics card for Mac mini

I am having graphics problems with my Mac Mini. I pay WOW and it is ok until I go to Pandaria! There my character or Toon as they called slows down to a freeze in the video! I have an AMD Radeon 6000 series cs card in it. This is considered a mid range graphics card. If I switch to my pc with a GeForce video card there is no problem. Do the new Mac Minis have a better graphics card being that it is an Intel product? And they have a fast i7 CPU as well? Will the new Mac Minis work better playing the World of Warcraft game while I m questing in Pandaria? Will it wrk as well as a Nvidia GeForce Graphics card?

My late 2012 Mini has an Intel 4000 integrated graphics chip. I've read DOZENS of complaints about it here. Other than sporadic "flickering" when using Photoshop on one monitor and viewing YouTube on the other, I haven't seen anything I'd want to "throw the Mac out the window" over.
I don't play WOW (haven't since I had my G5 iMac), but I do have TheSims3 and even running it at 1920X1080, it performs well.

  • Best graphics card for mac pro

I am getting a Mac Pro in the very near future. I would like to buy a very high level graphics card. I have been looking at the Nvidia Quadro fx 4600. Does anyone know if this is comapatable with the mac pro and if not what would be a better card than the Nvidia 4500 for around the same amount of money as the 4600.
    p.s.
I do not want to run windows.
    Thanks for the help.

In that case what would you suggest?... I intend to get heavy into shake and 3d modeling... I already use final cut a lot and I eventually want to have an hd ready set up. Is the nvidia 4500 really better for this sort of work than the x1900? because i heard some reviews that its shading wasnt better.. I also heard that the x1900 is more for gaming than with working with digital content. maybe you could shed some light on this subj.
    Thank you in advance.

  • What replacement graphics card for Mac Pro1.1

My NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card is producing various screen artifacts and freezing on startup,
but not in safe boot mode. From reading this forum and posts for a couple of days I've concluded
that I need to replace my card and am thinking that the +ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit+
+for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008)+ from the Apple site is the one to get.
I should add that I've tried all the usual fixes in case it wasn't a hardware problem. My question is
will the card work with my system (only Apple and Adobe software running OS 10.5.8 and one 20" Dell monitor).
Now I know this question has been asked and answered many times but I seems to work for some
and not for others that's why I ask again mentioning my particular setup in case that has some
    importance.
Thanks in anticipation of any advice.

How did you get on with your graphics card replacement?
My original Nvidia GeForce 7300GT is on its way out but I'm reluctant to pay nearly £300 for a replacement. Are there any other options available to me?
