Graphics crashes under Windows XP SP3 with Radeon X1600

Hello
I've been experiencing a lot of problems with my MacBook Pro recently. Everytime I run an application that demands some graphic power from the X1600 GPU, such as games or Photoshop, the computer crashes and gets EXTREMELY hot (so hot I can't even touch it). Sometimes the screen just goes black, or the audio loops endlessly; others (unfortunatley not too frequently) the crash recovers with a "VPU Recover" message, stating the computer lost connection with the GPU. I noticed that the fans are not running either, so I installed InputRemapper and manually controlled them. Even with the fans running at full speed while operating graphic-demanding applications, the crashes continue to happen.
I've already installed the latest drivers for bootcamp from the ATI website and even deleted the bootcamp partition and re-installed windows XP on it. I installed Everest to check on the temperature of the GPU, and just before a crash, it reaches up to 60º Celsius.
This issue, however, is not exclusive to WinXP, as it too happens on Leopard, where the fans also aren't running automatically. I tried an SMC reboot but this didn't work either.
Any suggestions on how to solve this before my old MBP melts on me someday?
Thanks in advance.

I ran the hardware test. There were no problems at all. Maybe the MBP cooled down after the restart to make the test, who knows. Still, back on WinXP SP3, I had another crash, although the VPU Recover managed to restart the GPU.
Right now the temps are as follows:
Northbridge: 51ºC
GPU:52ºC
CPU Core #1: 54ºC
CPU Core #2: 50ªC
I even tried underclocking the GPU to reduce the heat generation. I installed ATITool 0.25 beta 13 (reportedly the only version that does actually work with the MacBook Pro) and underclocked the GPU's core to 305.10 MHz and the memory to 274.5 MHz. I stumbled on an article via google that described this procedure to help control the heat generation a few minutes after making my original post here; This caused some drop on the heat readings, but not quite a lot:
Northbridge: 49ºC
GPU: 49ºC
CPU Core #1: 50ºC
CPU Core #2: 47ªC
The fans are running at 6000 RPM right now and it does not get any cooler, plus I'm using a refrigeration base (those thingies with fans underneath the laptop).
Upon reinstalling the drivers back then, i did completley uninstall the prior drivers before installing the new ones (titled on ATI's download site as "Bootcamp drivers" for WinXP). I rebooted the machine, and only then I installed the updated drivers. Same procedure just now, and no effects at all.
Any other thoughts? I've looked around the discussion forums and there were a lot of issues just like this one, still unresolved. Looks to me like this is some GPU firmware/BIOS problem, and though it's well documented here on the forums, I can't find any sollution to it.

Well it came installed on my brand new Windows 8 pro w530 I received 4 weeks ago and has never worked. When you try to open power manager it just crashes. If you uninstall it the Lenovo software just keep reinstalling it. If you uninstall the Lenovo PM driver but do not reboot you can then open Power Manager. The minute you reboot the Lenovo software reinstallls the driver.
Why would Lenovo install software on a brand new Windows 8 laptop that is broken and useless? Tech support is absolutely no help they transfer you to the software department which wants to charge you to fix a problem that Lenovo created!!! It is crazy!! I was hoping someone here could solve this problem or maybe someone at Lenovo would see this and get the problem resolved. Tech support has been useless. I reported the problem to them at least 5 times.

  • Adobe acrobat pro 9.2 crashes in windows xp sp3 when closing a pdf

Adobe acrobat pro 9.2 crashes in windows xp sp3 when I close a pdf. This means that if I have multiple files open, all of them close. I get an error message from windows that the problem is due to windows' Data Execution Prevention (DEP). I tried making Adobe an exception to windows' DEP and re-started the computer but this did not help the problem. Any ideas about how to fix this problem?

So.. If we want to control the "hardware graphics acceleration", should it be done inside the Adobe Acrobat Pro ?
If yes, which part of option should we changed ?
If not, can someone tell me which way to setting this one ?
Do anybody have other input ? This problem makes me crazy

  • I would like to know if Firefox 7 will work on Windows xp sp3, with AMD Athlon64 ?

I have a desk top that has the older version of firefox 3.6 on it and I would like to update and want to know if the ff 7 will work on my version of windows xp, sp3 with an AMD Athlonn64 instead of a Pentium4. I believe I have plenty of memory I believe.

I'm not sure about the graphics card driver, the pc I am referring to is 4 years old. Everything works great, but the ff 3.6 didn't configure right the last update and can't open my email.

  • How can I get a better driver for my 1394b Hostcontroller in my Macbook pro 2010 to solve the problem, that it is too slow under Windows 7 installed with bootcamp ?

How can I get a better driver for my 1394b Hostcontroller in my Macbook pro 2010 to solve the problem, that it is too slow under Windows 7 installed with bootcamp ?
WIndows can't find a better one than the installed LSI Conformed 1394 Hostcontroller

Read and follow the Bootcamp Installation instructions that you were offered to view when you ran Bootcamp Assistant.
Run Bootcamp Assistant again and select the option to download the Bootcamp Support software. Follow the instructions. Then boot into Windows and install the Windows Support software you downloaded and saved.

  • Lion - Windows XP (SP3) with Boot Camp

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro with Lion on it and would like to install Windows XP (SP3) with Boot Camp, but the instructions only mention Windows 7... do I need to buy Windows 7 or can I run Windows XP anyway?

    pietrofromlondon wrote:
that would be a costly option... I got 4 giga and will stick to it, I mainly use 2D, but 3D from time to time too... that's why I thought about boot camp rather than Parallels. Will try to get Windows 7 unless you think it's a bad idea.... By the way, how much space would you allow the partition for windows?
Not really costly at all, 8GB of RAM is currently $51 from www.macsales.com (OWC) and Fusion is $49 retail so for $100 you have an elegant solution. Much less expensive than buying WIndows 7.
Also you can partition as much space as you want, how much you need is 100% dependent on how much you use.

  • Graphics drivers for windows 7 compatible with hp notebook pc 500

iplz recommend me graphics drivers for windows 7 compatible with hp notebook pc 500

    Hi:
Download and run this driver.  You will probably get an unsupported operating system error.
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=447304&swItemId=ob_47264_1&swEnvOid=2096
Close out of any error windows.
Go to the device manager and click on the video controller needing drivers.
Click on the driver tab.  Click on update driver.  Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.
That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp34749.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install.
Reboot and your graphics should be working normally.
You will not have Windows aero because the Intel GMA 900 graphics adapter is not 100% Vista or W7 capable but at least you will be able to change the screen resolution and have graphics acceleration enabled.

  • Premiere Elements 9 crashes with multiple NVIDIA graphics cards under Windows 7

I've just installed Premiere Elements 9 and found that it will not run at all with multiple NVIDIA graphics cards active under Windows 7.  Per all the other discussions, I updated the NVIDIA drivers and Quicktime support to the latest versions.  (NVIDIA version 260.99).  I have both a 9400 GT and an 8400 GS installed, to support multiple monitors.  They both use the same driver.  The PRE 9 organizer will run, but as soon as I create or load a project it quickly crashes.
On a long shot I disabled the 8400 GS card in the Device Manager and now I can run PRE 9.  Of course this means giving up one of my monitors.  Any other ideas?

Over in the Premiere Pro area (or maybe it was in the Hardware section... didn't pay a lot of attention 'cause it really didn't matter to me) I read a message about using two nVidia cards with no problems (other than no dual-card SLI support)
I **think** that was with two SAME model nVidia cards
And, of course, PPro is completely different code, so PreEl may simply not work with two nVidia cards

  • Macbook Pro and ATI Graphics crashes in Windows Vista and 7

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone else had been having problems with Windows 7 and Vista having graphics driver crashes. I have been having this problem since the Boot Camp beta, and it has yet to be addressed as far as I can tell.
Basically the problem is that after a few minutes in either Vista or 7(after installing all the boot camp drivers from the Leopard or Snow Leopard disc) the screen graphics will start getting all corrupted. Eventually I will get a message in the taskbar telling me that the ATI driver has crashed and recovered from an error.
I have looked everywhere online I can think of for an answer, but have come up pretty empty thus far. The only thing I remember finding that was a possibility a long time ago was something to do with trying it with 1 stick of ram installed rather than 2, or that my ram could be problematic.
I tried running with just 1 stick, and that didn't help at all. I also tried each stick individually also with no change. I even went as far as running a diagnostic using some kind of memory testing software to see if the ram was bad, but it came back as good.
Also, I have run in XP without any issues whatsoever, so I am assuming it is something Vista and 7 specific. I was thinking it might have something to do with the Aero features as when I disable the ATI driver and run in Windows Basic without Aero enabled, I don't get the graphics glitches. Another clue might be that when the graphics glitch up, if I bring up the ctrlaltdel screen which gives you the option of Task Manager, Log Off, etc. the graphics are NOT glitched on that screen. As soon as you exit that screen however, the glitched screen is immediately back.
Bah, I am at pretty much the end of my sanity trying to figure this out, and was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the older MacBook Pro or is mine just inherently bad? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my system info just for extra help possibly?
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.5f10
    ATI Radeon X1600:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x71c5
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxxx-086
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.086

Just an added update for anyone interested. I believe I have finally figured out what the issue is.
Apparently, at least on this model of MacBook, Apple has the ATI card underclocked to 310MHz / 278MHz (GPU and RAM respectively) when running normally. However, when running in Windows the ATI driver automatically uses the full clock speed of 470MHz / 470MHz (or something to that effect). The reason that it ends up getting artifacts and driver crashes is because of overheating. Apple has it underclocked because of the way heat is distributed in the system.
Anyway, I found a tool that KIND of works for fixing the issue I believe. It is called ATITool, and allows you to change the clock speed to the 310MHz / 278MHz that works so well in OS X.
    It is located at: http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/
One thing though, the newest version 0.27 beta 3 (on mine at least) causes the backlight of the screen to go off when you load it in Windows. If you put the machine into hibernate, then bring it back up it will come back on... but that is annoying. I have found that the version 0.25 beta 13 doesn't have this issue. It is possible some of the other versions prior to 0.27 beta 3 also don't have this issue, but I haven't tested them yet. I will give some of them a try later.
The previous versions can be found here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Tweaking/ATITool/
Anyway, if anyone else has luck with other clock speeds or knows of any other solutions please let me know. This way works, but I would like to find a better solution if possible.

  • Is the latest version of FCP studio compatible with Radeon X1600 graphics..

I read under the requirements that the latest version of FCP studio is not compatible with "integrated graphics cards"... what does that mean to me with an iMac that has a Radeon X1600 with 128MB and a bus type PCIe? Will it work?
    Thanks!

Final Cut Studio 2 (with FCP 6) runs just fine on my 2.0 GHz 20" iMac CD, which has a 128 MB ATI Radeon X1600 with an external display (1280x1024) connected via DVI.

  • Games keep crashing under Windows XP SP2 32Gig FAT32 partition

    Hi All!
Hopefully somone can help me. We just purchased an iMac Core 2 Duo 20" from Best Buy. I was able to install BootCamp and install Windows XP Pro SP2 on a 32Gig FAT32 partition. I installed all the updates for WinXP. When we play games like Black & White 2 or Zoo Tycoon 2, the games seem to run fine until they crash, which seem to happen at random interval (several minutes into the games i.e. 20-30 minutes). I've tried updating the games, but no go.
Running under Mac OS X (10.4.9), the machine has never crashed...it is rock solid. Not so when running Windows XP SP2. I've tried wipping the XP partition (using the BootCamp application) and starting over from scratch, only to get the same results. Has anyone experienced something similar? Most importantly, has anyone gotten around this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

  • Wifi not working under windows 8.1 with Bootcamp

Hi, I have installed windows 8.1 under bootcamp. it seems to work fine however the wifi connaction is not existing under windows. therefore i can only connect via ethernet. Anyone an idea how to solve it? Thx

    Hey there,
I don't know if it's still interesting for you, but I've had the exact same issues. The only solution, as far as there is no official change from Apple, you can install Windows 8.0 via Bootcamp with official drivers for Bootcamp (wifi works great) and then install the upgrade to 8.1 as Windows still uses the former installed drivers from Win 8 on 8.1 as well.
Hope that helped, 8.1 runs even better on my MB Air than Mac OS 10.9 :/

IIRC this file, sasl32.dll, should get installed onto %WINDIR%\system32 when you install DS5.2 windows version.
You may run WinZIP and File/Open "d52diu.zip" (DS5.2 zip image) and look for "nsbasesys.zip", double click to Open it and you should find "sasl32.dll" there.

    Hi,
With WDK 7.1.0 installed on a Windows 7 (64 bits), for a print device, I build a  customized Unidrv's user interface by supplying a UI plugin. The driver package consists of a GPD file (it contains OEM feature) and a UI plugin ( as a dll) I developped.
The print driver is a user mode driver and works fine on Windows 7/64 bits (the build environment is "Windows 7 x64").
When I set up the build environment to "Windows XP Build Environments x86" and install the driver on Windows XP SP3, I get an access violation when I open the Printer "Document Property Sheet" (i.e clicking "Preferences" button,

Is there some environment variables I have to set when I choose Windows XP (x86) as OS target?
    Someone can help?
