Graphics errors and freezing

I've been reading on the forums and I see people with similar issues regarding the screen freezing but the sound continues. Sometimes I can move the mouse toothough it usually resets to the location it froze at whenever I attempt to click. I can usually temporarily solve the problem by putting the mac to sleep or forcing it to shut down with the round power button on the back, but the issue has been recurring for a week or two.
But I'm also seeing unusual graphics errors, which I haven't seen others mention. Sometimes light greys are pinkish, occasionally a thin blue bar somewhere on the screen that goes away when I change windows or sleep, and most predominantly (and annoying)a stretched out transparent blue checkerboard over the entire monitor.
To my bewilderment, this problem appears in screen shots. Observe:
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s227/iDeucer/error.png
I can even eyedropper it.
I've considered the issue to be heat related and am trying to bring the temperature down to 70F but I have my doubts.

The iSight is very hard to open and repair, because Apple say there are no user repairable components, the warranty is voided if you open the case. However, if you are out of warranty one of these sites might be of help:

  • Macbook Pro Creating Graphical Errors and Freezing

My Macbook Pro is just under 2 1/2 years old now. I bought it in August of '06.
Heres my problem. About 6 months ago, my computer started leaving graphical errors on the screen. For example:
    http://www.andponcho.com/minibus/images//graphicalerror2.jpg
    http://www.andponcho.com/minibus/images//graphicalerror3.jpg
These errors are from when I minimized a window.
Not only does it do that, but sometimes there could be a line left up on the screen, this happens especially when I browse on Safari.
Another error happening is sometimes a triangle may appear on my screen. It may be a cyan, magenta, or a yellow tint. It happens randomly.
Thats not the worst part. Recently, I played WoW on my computer and it was causing all sorts of graphical errors on my screen. And if that didn't happen, my computer would just randomly freeze. I was unable to play the game. Mind you, 2 years ago, I played WoW on this very same computer and never had any problems while playing.
This is where it gets frustrating. Like I mentioned above, my computer tends to freeze...about 6 to 7 times a week. I don't know how many times I've been working in Photoshop and my computer would just lock up on me. The worst part is I use Skype everyday and its happens, my screen locks, but the person on the other end can still hear me and I can hear them.
I've done a bit of research on the web and the only thing I found out that may be causing the errors is my logic board. I first thing I thought of when my computer started to freeze was it may be getting too hot. I downloaded smcFanControl to control my fans to move more heat out. I've also noticed my computer temp could reach 170 degrees Fahrenheit .The fans do seem to help a bit, but I still get errors all the time.
Is it the logic board? Or is it something else? Could I have caused this? I spent $3000 on this computer. I'm an art student and my computer is my life. I can't afford to replace a $1000 part.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test? It is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that originally came with your computer. You boot to it by holding down "D" and follow the instructions on the screen. If you get an error code, it would point to what the problem is. Try running it when your computer is malfunctioning.
Do you get the same artifacts on an external display? If so, that would indicate a graphics chip problem. If not, then it could be a problem with the built in display or its connections.
Freezing can have many causes, both hardware and software related. Aside from the logic board, a dying hard drive can also cause freezing. It would be prudent to make a good backup and keep it up to date, just in case your computer stops working altogether some day.
You can download this utility for free and use it to check out your hard drive:
    S.M.A.R.T. Utility
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
It actually sounds more like you logic board and graphics chip, since the problem seems to be heat related and occurs during graphics intense applications. But it wouldn't hurt to eliminate the hard drive as a factor.
You might try a chill mat and see if that helps with the heat problem.
Do you by any chance have 3 year Applecare? If so, it's still under warranty and any repairs should be covered.
    Good luck!

  • Fatal Error and Freezing my screen

    Hello All,
I need some help.  I allowed my wife to use one of her friends external hardrives on my computer and then after she was done opening her friend's PDF files, all of my scanned PDF files are now very very difficult to open and I keep getting a message stating Fatal Error and my computer screen freezes up.   I believe that I have the most up to date free adobe acrobat software that I allowed my computer to install the upgrade.  Please help me fix this problem. Thanks!

What is your operating system?  What is your Reader version?
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Message "Graphic-error" and then i have white pages when i look in my pdf

Message "Graphic-error" an then i have white pages when i look in my pdf. But when i look the same pdf in "Preview" it is ok.
I have reinstall Acrobart but nothing change.

Is this a single pdf or all pdfs. What version of Acrobat are you
running and which version of the OS? The fact that you can see the pdf
in preview and not Acrobat 8, is no guarantee that the pdf is not
corrupt. It is quite common that what can be be viewed in earlier
version of Acrobat, is considered corrupt in later versions. Adobe
continually tightens the enforcement of pdf standards in rendering pdf
files. This is done for many reasons, but the best reason to do so is
security. People have found ways to use these loopholes to compromise
    the security of computers.

  • Satellite A300-1N8 on XP in AHCI - "iaStor" error and freezing

    Hello guys,
A friend of mine has bought a new Toshiba A300-1N8 without OS a month ago.
I've installed Win XP Pro Sp3 and after 2 days of wondering how to enable the ACHI (because in compability mode it was hellish slow), I found how to do it and I made my XP with NLite and the extracted drivers from the Intel Matrix Storage Manager - ICH9M and reinstalled the windows in ACHI mode without any problems (because i still didnt know that there is way to install it without reistaling of windows)
I've installed all the drivers from the site and everything was fine till the moment we discovered that randomly the system stops responding and freezing... then the only way is restarting from the Power Button.
I found that in the Event Viewer (in the control panel - administrative tools) on the System information randomly appears an error:
    {color:#ff0000}"The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor, did not respond within the timeout period". {color}
And the Iastor.sys actually was the system driver for the Intel AHCI controller, is it right?
So after that error apears - the the HDD lights permanently on and the system stopped responding after a few time or after trying to restart or turn off from windows start menu.
    i found here
    [http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1368385]
that the error may be can be fixed by changing the parameters in the LPM from 1 to 0.
I fixed it but the error still apears and the system crashes randomly :(
    Any suggestions?

Exactly the same problem here on a Satellite L300.
I also made an ISO file with nlite and the F6 SATA driver disk.
The system freezes (in fact its the windows explorer or "My computer" that freezes) and the harddisk LED remains solid on. But the drive remains working if a program was having access to it. But it's not possible to start an explorer based program.
The freezes appear to be randomly, sometimes after many hours.
After reboot there appears to be an "iastor" time out in the Windows log files some time before the freeze.
No IDE settings available as there is no IDE drive in the XP hardware manager...
Only thing I could try right now is set the BIOS to compatibility mode and use a "normal" XP install disk without the sata drivers and see if that works better for me.

  • My ipad error and freeze

    hello friends,
i need help with my ipad 2.
After doing restore from my back up, my ipad error, it shows a small circular image of loading, but it stays like that forever and not responding.
i can't restart it, it's not responsive to anything.
when i tried to connect to itunes, it says : there is unknown error and can't connect.
i don't know what to do ....... please help
    thank you very much
    megawati.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Macbook Pro ''15 Retina Graphic glitches and freeze

Hey, I hope some of you may help me. Sometimes when I open my Macbook and it's awaking from sleep it freeze and I have a distorted screen with wired colours, I need to reboot it then, but after rebooting all is fine :/ Is that a software bug or related to my Logicboard ? I just got it back after a warranty case where something on my old Logicboard died after 8 weeks after purchase. I bought it this June. I have that Nvidia graphics in there. Here is a pic I made: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42689244/IMAG0090.jpg

What is an SMC reset? The gfxcardstatus worked. Partially. I now know something is either wrong with the nvidia graphic card or its software(the hd 4000 one is better from a performance test by individually testing both cards).
How does the apple exchange work? Just walk in with the Mac and they resolve/replace the Mac or what? Any ideas?
    Thanks

The reset is a little tricky and might take a few tries before you do it successfully, keep eye on for the colour change on the magsafe connector

  • Memory disk full error, and freezing

recently my mbp has been freezing up totally and I have to shut down by holding down my power switch. It seems like it has always froze when I'm using Safari. Then, the past 2 days, sometimes when I try to open a program i get an error that says the memory disk drive is full and asks me to choose a program to force quit. It happened when I only had iChat and Safari open once... Any ideas as to what is causing this?
    mbp 15''   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I use a program called Yasu http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/ that might help you. It clears the caches and histories which will build up in Safari. Also check your prefs in Safari as how to manage your history.

  • MBP 15in Mid-2012 crashes often, graphics error and kernel panics

My MBP used to crash almost whenever you pick it up—that was remedied by removing a stick of my RAM from 8GB to 4GB. That was a few months ago, and it seems to be coming back for some reason, not because I pick it up or move it, but it would just freeze up randomly and restart.
I have this piece of information from the most recent crash. Can someone help me decipher it?

I have taken this to the Genius Bar many times and i've been told many different diagnoses, such as replacing the entire Logic Board to just removing a stick of RAM, which seems to have fixed the crashing temporarily. Can someone tell me what exactly might be wrong and what I should do to get this fixed the next time I bring it to support?

Thank you for your quick reply. Also, my computer crashes sometimes due to a "graphics problem". Anything I can provide from the Console for that?

  • Iphoto gallery getting slow java script errors and freezing up system

Iphoto 08 freezing up system and causing slow java errors other users can't get pages to load fast enough, even with high speed connections anyone know what's going on???

    Shawn:
I'm surprised you were able to even install it since the system requirements are 10.4.9 or later and Quicktime 7.2. If you were abel to install that may be the reason you're having problems.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Graphic glitch and freezing.

I had a graphic problem with my iMac 3 weeks ago, had to take it to an Apple repairer 3 hours away, there just isn't anyone closer, and have had it back for about 6 hours now. I got the Snow Leopard upgrade while it was away and have been looking forward to getting into it all. As soon as I got my iMac home I fired it up and straight away noticed a graphic glitch or something odd on my 2nd monitor, kinda looked like aliens from space invaders... This problem went away if I changed that monitors resolution or if I rotated the display, so I thought it might be a driver problem which should hopefully be fixed by upgrading to SL.
I attempted this upgrade, it seemed to go fine but when I finally got into SL I noticed that once again there were some space invader glitches, but instead of being huge and all the way across the 2nd monitor they were in 2 separate blocks 1 in the top left and one just slightly to the right from center at the very top, they were flashing green from time to time (just like before) but that was about all. After a few seconds all the icons on my desktop and also the dock icons screwed up, display as black and white lines, or weird colored blocks, or super pixelated and just pretty screwy.
I formatted from fresh doing Leopard (without updating fully to 10.5.8) then installing SL, same problem, I then tried installing just SL which worked as usual but still had the graphic glitches when hovering over or interacting this time, also there were some problems with the glitches showing over windows (I'll put a link to a screenshot of them at the end). I'm currently updating a fresh install of Leopard to 10.5.8 to then update to SL to see if that works.
I had a thought that it might be hardware, the logic board and graphics card were both replaced during the repair time, they said they tested it but on the repair form I got it just says 'restarted a few times with no problems' so I'm not sure if they even tested it very much.
It took almost 3 weeks to get my mac back today, and these problems are quite annoying, if I have to lose it for another 3 weeks because of this lack of testing I'm gonna be rather annoyed as I'm losing work because of it.
Anyone got ideas of what it might be? or just anyone else had this problem with SL or just Leopard? Any information would be great.
Screenshot of glitch while doing a google search:
    http://www.xager.net/i/glitch.jpg

My old first gen macbook pro had a similar problem (under Tiger and Leopard), it was fixed. My current unibody macbook pro is doing this as well, I've only noticed it now under Snow Leopard.
I doubt it's a software problem, I've had similar issues in PCs when their video cards were running too hot. My current mbp gets these glitches when the system is under more load and so I'm sure its heat related. One time the heat and glitches got so bad the system just locked up.
I hope you can get your system repaired. I am going to now go ahead and try my luck with apple support as well.

  • Macbook pro graphical errors (overheating??)

Hi! I hope to god someone can help me out on this one. I posted a couple months ago about having problems with graphical errors and screen glitches, and it seems to have been under control for a bit, but now it is acting up again. Here is my post from a few months ago:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1496016&tstart=0
Tonight I got so fed up with it (random lock ups, and screen glitches) that I just went back to factory settings restoring my MBP in hopes that it would fix this "software issue" so I have been told.
But it is continuing to do these random freeze ups. Here is a picture only a few minutes after I did the full restore:
    http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/AlexPuckett/messup.jpg
as you can see (it is a little bit hard to see with the dark background) there are graphical error type lines going horizontally near the bottom of the screen, these seem to happen in any one window of any program. For example it could happen in a Firefox window but the desktop and all my other applications opened seem to be fine (no graphical glitches at all).
I am thinking it has to do with overheating, and have attempted in the past to physically take off the top of the MBP and see if there is dust on my fans, but the top would not pop off and I was afraid of hurting things. Could dust on fans be a culprit?
I am hoping it is not the logic board, or something that is crucial, but I have tried so many things that it leads me to believe it might be something more serious. I have ran diagnostics numerous times, and it says everything is fine.
I really appreciate the answers and suggestions as to what this could be, college starts up next week! And I can't bear to be writing papers and doing research only to be halted by a frozen screen! That is the worst!
    Thanks for the help.

This is not likely a thermal issue. I have the line also with my laptop running idle at 104-108 degrees F.
I never saw this issue until I performed a fresh install 10.5 in an effort to solve a myriad of issues with this laptop.
Everyone says these issues are all thermal so to fix my graphical issues (the desktop line, screen flickering, graphical glitches, black screen of death and complete system freezes)
I've used a heat pad, re-applied the thermal grease on the processors (correctly unlike how it came), turned both fans to 6K RPM and even mounted the laptop at a 80 degree angle to allow the bottom to breath and let the heat escape out the top...all to no avail.
To top things off this laptop does not shutdown correctly when the battery gets low. It just powers off once the battery runs out even after replacing the battery with a brand new apple branded battery strait from the Apple store.
Any help anyone? I honestly feel like re-enacting the Discount Tire commercial through an Apple store window.

  • Freezing, crashing, and graphics errors (+lots of /usr/libexec/hidd errors)

This has happened *multiple times* on two Multitouch MacBook Pros (Feb 2008, 2.4 GHz, 200 GB harddrive, 2 GB RAM, 256 MB VRAM):
Occasionally, for no apparent reason, the computer will get into a cycle where the mouse freezes for about 20 seconds, then control comes back for about 10 seconds, then the mouse freezes for 20, repeatedly until the computer crashes.
This usually is accompanied with graphics glitches and artifacts. The latest time I managed to get a screenshot (the computer was resuming from sleep when it happened). This is the worst glitching I have seen so far: http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=errorcx1.jpg (I blacked out the contact list)
It doesn't seem to be from overheating or pushing the graphics card (my MBP has played games with no problems). I've also managed to kill WindowServer, but the problem just comes back once the WindowServer restarts.
Console prints this error hundreds of times:
    5/28/08 8:47:12 AM /usr/libexec/hidd[50] IOHIDEventQueueEnqueue: Error enqueuing memory. (0xe00002e8)
Parallels used to frequently cause this, but I've since removed Parallels (and switched to VMWare), gotten a replacement MBP (for an unrelated issue), and have reinstalled Leopard.
(I've also had the vertical LCD backlight issue a few times on both MBPs - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1423301&tstart=0)

    Hi guys,
sadly, I have to report I got same problems. It definitely started back with 10.5.2 and I'm quite confident it was related to Graphic Update or VmWare Fusion network traffic. By upgrading to 10.5.3 I haven't seen any more of graphic glitches and artifacts, but problems is still there, and very hard to simulate.
So far I've seen it only on my MBP (connected using Airport), and not when connected to Ethernet. It seems to be somehow connected to network problems and how VmWare Fusion is handling it. Today, when it crashed, I capture following in my system.log

  • 10.5.2 and geforce 730 graphics card - graphical errors & freezes

    Hi there!
I am writing this on behalfof a good friend, who is experiencing computer troubles, since updating to 10.5.2, specifically the graphics update.
    +His machine specs: 24' iMac G5, purchased November 2006 - without apple care.+
He has noted system freezes, and strange graphical errors, such as black lines and squares, since updating his system several days ago.
No steps have been taken as of yet, apart from the norm of clearing caches, restarting, and repairing permissions etc, which have not helped unfortunately.
As the errors are being output graphically, he believes the problem to be the *geforce 730* graphics card, which allegedly has a reputation.
Could you possibly help me please; have you experienced similar, what are his options, is this unit replaceable and at what cost, etc?
Although he does not have apple care, do apple have a responsibility to him, as it's a hardware failure, on a machine not even a year and a half old!
Thanks so much in advance of your help, and I'll keep searching in the mean time

I have the same issue, although I am running 10.4.11, ATI Radeon X1600
    Welcome to Discussions, SGiambalvo!
With all due respect, you'd get more, and better, advice from starting your own thread or looking at Tiger related threads. Those with similar experience to yours may just skip reading this thread.
Seems to be a hardware issue.
First things everyone will want to know are:
    1. is the iMac's firmware up-to-date? There were two. Refer to this Apple Support article: Firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
    2. the result, or not, from running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test (located on your iMac's grey system Install Disc)?
    3. when did this start, has it gotten worse, if sudden was there an event that was a coincidence?
    4. if you have AppleCare, what did they say when you called?
got a 'grey screen of death'
If it was the message to restart your Mac, that's a kernel panic. Can be due to hardware or software problem.
the video card updates seem to only be for Aluminum iMacs...so I have not downloaded this pack
Don't bother with it, as it will not allow an install after you've downloaded it.
While your problem may very well be the video card or logic board, it could be the hard drive going out. Regardless which, you'll of course want to backup all important data immediately.
