Graphics failure in my G5 iMac

Today my G5 iMac (serial #QP5160FQPNY) would boot up but the screen is reticulated with no Finder screen detail - screen is a solid color with a small checkerboard pattern throughout. I tried shutting it off, disconnecting all peripherals and the rebooting with no success. I also tried plugging in the keyboard and zapping the PRAM. No luck. I also tried booting off an external FW drive. Again no luck. I cannot run the Apple Hardware Test since there is no screen detail. Is there any thing else I can do? My AppleCare Plan expired 6 months ago (sigh!). Am I screwed or has Apple extended their repair iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues past the 3 year limit?
Please reply.

Thanks for the reply.
I thought an adapter came with my iMac but I can't find it. In any event, I took the back off my iMac and went through the steps as outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2094?viewlocale=en_US According to this article, if the computer doesn't respond to troubleshooting steps it needs to go in for repair. I spoke to the Apple certified repair tech where I bought the computer and he felt it was a hardware problem and repair costs might be about half the cost of a new iMac. I think I'll buy a new iMac instead of trying to repair this one. This model (a 1st generation iMac G5) has been plagued with problems and, while under warranty, I had the power supply and motherboard replaced as well as the Superdrive replaced twice. Even if I repaired this one, no telling when something else will break. I think it's best to buy a new iMac and the Applecare warranty and accept that this iMac is a lemon.

  • Graphic failure with Intel Graphics

    Hi!
I got my new MBP 15" i7 two weeks ago and installed all updates that were available.
I have noticed that if I watch movies in fullscreen mode with the Intel gfxCard and a Growl message appears or if I move my mouse cursor to the hidden dock some graphic failures show up:
    http://img.skitch.com/20100904-by9mfjq6uantsn752ftjc9sg1b.jpg
This also happens in screensaver if any popup (growl...) appears.
    Thanks a lot!
    StonerL

Are you forcing the computer to stay on the intel graphics chip with a program (like gfxCardStatus)?
I have the same computer, but for anything other than simple internet browsing my computer automatically switches to the dedicated nVidia card. As soon as I put up a full screen video or even an app like MS Word it switches cards.

  • Graphics Failure on mid-late 2011 27" imac

Hey guys I have a bit of a delima on my hands. About 2 nights ago I was browsing ebay when suddenly the display started to flash and display graphical artifacts then get stuck on a grey screen with blue lines on it. The top of the computers chase was hot to the touch. So I forced the computer to shut down and let it cool off for a bit.
After about a hour I restarted the machine and it booted normally but would not go past a grey screen AFTER the apple logo screen. I looked around online and the most obvious solution was that the hard drive had failed or was failing. Since I could not access Mac OS, the Recovery Partition, and windows had a fatal error when attempting to boot. This seemed to be the problem. So I booted into internet recovery, started up like a charm, I repaired the disk permissions "quite a few concerning the display", and repaired the drive.
Sure enough the OS booted this time. Thinking I was past most of the problem, I went to get the combo update in order to repair the faulty display driver "which should obviously be the problem right?". Well I go to open settings to check my exact OS number and BAM the display freaks out again and the top corner of the imac starts heating up again.
So again I turn the computer off and unplug it for a hour or so and then attempt to boot into internet recovery again. IT WILL NOT BOOT INTO INTERNET RECOVERY! There is also light blue lines running through the apple boot screen, but they go away when it goes to the next "grey" screen. So once again I hit the online forums looking for anything that I could use to help me get into recovery mode, well I try out single user and verboose mode. They work and allow me to repair the drive again and the computer boots.
This time when the computer boots I quickly open SMC Fan and crank up the fans to help keep the heat down "just in case the faulty driver is making the GPU overheat". The computer appears to be running perfectly fine, I even am able to apply the combo update, I reboot after installing the update. After restarting I think its alright to crank down the fans to the factory setting, as soon as I do the display freaks out again.
So I am begging to panic, because after checking online I learn that the nearest repair center is at least a 4 hour drive away in St.Louis. So I call apple tech support the next day and see what my options are. After about 3-4 hours of troubleshooting I am basically told that my options are to call the various repair centers around me and see if they will allow me to ship my entire mac to them and have them look at it. "no mention of return shipping or handling costs for time and labor". But if I am able to get the computer to boot into recovery mode, reinstalling the OS probably would fix the problem.
So after about another hour of trying, I finally am able to get into internet recovery again. First thing I do is format the hard drive in preperation for a clean install of lion. Problem is, shortly after the format completes, the screen wigs out again and displays a corrupted version of the felt background across the whole screen. So that pretty much factored out the hard drive as the problem, since lion recovery runs off ram doesnt it?
So I dont know what to do... I dont really want to ship the imac out because of 3 factors.
    1. it could get mishandled in transit and get broken.
    2. it could get lost in transit and apple never recieve it.
    3. during repair the internals for my imac could get swapped out for another lower tier version's. Which would require me to repeat the whole process.
Another option is to take it to my local best buy and have geek squad look at it. But to be honest I have heard so many horror storys about them that I am afraid to take my computer in the building.
My last option... is to just open it up myself and take a look. Since its possible that there is just accumulated dust making some componet overheat. My fear is that the componet may be damaged and I have no means to get it repaired.

It's a hardware fault. The only way you could possibly fix it yourself is if a memory module has to be replaced, which is unlikely from your description. You could try running the Apple Hardware Test, but it's unreliable.
If Apple is willing to let you ship the machine for repair, insure the shipment. Obviously you'll back up all data before it leaves your possession.
Do NOT take it to the "Geek Squad," whatever you do.

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

I've had it for 3 days now. The first 3 days have been fine.
Today I used Software Update to apply the 10.5.3
updates, including the one for the OS. Restarted. Now my machine

I found this article and applied the Combo Patch for 10.5.3.

The above topic is specific to MacBook Pro but the problem is not.
    Solution:
Reload the OS back to 10.5.2.
Generally Software Update caused the problem.
I'm not clear on which software update caused the problem.
It's been suggested that the Graphics Unit Software Update was the culprit.
Alas, I did not install that update.
So I suspect it was "Mac OS X Update" (10.5.3)
If someone wishes to determine this then just apply the OS update
for 10.5.3 and see if you have the same problem with the NVidia
    Graphics Card.
Lastly, I'd really like it if Apple Tech Support resolved this issue
and posted that the issue is fixed.

  • ISight failure on 3.06 iMac

    Hi Everyone,
I have just received my latest 24 inch iMac a 3.06 Ghz with 8800 GS graphics. Its really fine but there is just one problem with the iSight camera I do not get with my two white 2.16 Ghz 24 inch iMacs.
I have Skype on all three machines but on the Aluminium model I loose the iSight Camera after finishing a Skype session and can only get it back again after a restart. Neither Skype, nor Photo Booth nor iMovie nor iChat can find the iSight after a Skype session.
I have turned off video automatically starting iChat in iChat prefs.
    Any ideas anybody?
Latest .... cannot now get iSight at all in anything.

    Hello Alan Williams
Try the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
If your ONLY problem in ANY user account comes from using Skype, unless you get an answer here, check Skype's comprehensive Help system or search or post in the dedicated Skype Forum for Mac OS X. The Skype users who post there may be able to help you.

  • Graphics Update for a 2007 iMac?

Why is my Software Update telling me to install the new graphics update when, according to the update's description, my iMac isn't affected by it? I have a mid-2007 intel iMac running 10.6.4.

The knowledge base article implies the frame-rate improvements are related to specific machines but there are other fixes that apply to Snow Leopard presumably on any 10.6.4 machine running those products such as Aperture.

  • Intel 4000 graphics failure both windows and linux on thinkpad edge s430

After 5-30 minutes the screen breaks up in flickering (or just black) and system freezes. I need to turn off computer. After restart the error occurs again quickly.
This occurs regardless if I boot to windows or into a linux bootable dvd.
    But
Remote desktop connection to the computer and it works fine for days .
    ->
Thus I believe it is the intel 4000 graphics that has some hardware failure which is not invoked upon remote desktop.
I wonder if this is a known issue?
I wonder if only a replacement of the intel 4000 graphics will fix this (this probably means replacing the main board entirely?)
    Or
If it is in any way likely that it is _only_ because maybe thermal paste between cooler and cpu/graphics is slipping?
    Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430
    Intel I7 + Intel HD 4000
    No additional graphics

Have you tried setting up the connection manually?
    e.g.
    /etc/init.d/networkmanager stop
    #Unlock wireless devices
    rfkill unblock all
    #enable interface
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    #check network visibility
    iwlist wlan0 scanning
    #configure wifi
    iwconfig wlan0 essid <ESSID>
    iwconfig tx auto
and then set up wpa_supplicant in case you use WPA2!
    #Get ip address
    dhclient wlan0
One thing I regularly miss when getting a new wifi device is to add it to the MAC filter list of my router, so check if the MAC address is added there...

  • Graphic issues - 10.9.2 - iMac

    Hi
with my iMac (late 2009) have run into difficult problem - Display card is Ati 4850.
I got a screen like this - most of the menus are garbage and not readable.
    -and many black boxes.
I have booted to safe mode, graphics are ok and system is working just fine, I have verified disk and repaired permissions
So - any recommendations what to do next?
    Thanks for your comments

    Hi,
    From the Safe Mode page
Starting up in Safe Mode does several things:
It forces a check of the startup volume, just like the First Aid feature of Disk Utility. You may see a progress bar on the screen during this check, and the computer takes longer than usual to complete its startup.
It loads only required kernel extensions.
It disables all fonts installed by the user.
It moves font caches to the Trash that are stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/  – where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
It disables all startup items and login items in Mac OS X v10.4 or later.
In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode opens only Apple-installed  startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems). These items are  different from user-selected account login items.
Taken together, these changes can help resolve or isolate certain issues that exist on the startup volume.
In the later drop down it reads
Safe Mode can be useful for troubleshooting. However, certain Mac OS X features do not work in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem. The behavior of some devices such as wireless networking may vary depending on computer and Mac OS X version.
Safe Mode in Mac OS X v10.5 or later also disables Quartz Extreme (hardware accelerated graphics). Applications that depend on Quartz Extreme do not open in Safe Mode, and the Mac OS X menu bar will appear solid even if "Translucent Menu Bar" is enabled in Desktop & Screen Saver preferences.
Safe Mode in Mac OS X v10.6 or later also disables File Sharing access. This means you can't mount Time Capsule disks or volumes being served by other computers running Mac OS X in Safe Mode.
Therefore any font you have installed  will not work.
If you have an app or utility that is changing the Fonts used to display Menus then you may have issues.
It is possible it is a graphics  (Quartz Extreme) issue - in that actually using accelerated graphics is the issue.
I did understand which way round things were working and which they were not.
It is late where I am and it may be some time before I pick up on further replies.

  • Graphics on 17 inch desktop iMac?

    Hi,
My iMac can't run Portal 2. I know it's the graphics card (error messages) and i was wondering if I can replace it or trick the game into thinking I had.
I found this post but it didn't mention 17-inch Macs
It is a 17 inch intel Mac BUT it is one of the thick, white ones.
    Any ideas?
    (P.S It's an ATY RadeonX1600)

iMacs asa group allow minimal changes.  RAM is easy.  HD is hard but doable.  GPU is soldered to logic board, not upgradable.
And even if you could trick the application, the game will be over when the game asks for a graphics command your card does not know about.

  • MBP screen graphics failure

I am experiencing intrmittent screen failure on my 3 1/2 yr old MBP (1440 x  900)
I close a window and the area behind it is 'noise, garbage
The red, yellow and green buttons at the top leftsuddenly are colourless noise in a rctanglular shpe
Windows sometimes have a 1.2 in of noise surrounding them that moves with the window
The menu bar will sometimes be B&W noise, wither the top half or all of it.
Refreshing windows often returns all of these issues back to normal.
At the moment all is fine ... started about a month ago
may have happened after Mavericks install, didn't notice though but nothing else has changed.
    MBP Mid 2010, 8 GB memory (2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and Intel HD Graphics
Is the graphics card failing or more likely memory failing or ???
    Cheers,
    Dave

That model has a program in effect:

  • Does the amount of VRAM matter for AP3 when considering the graphics options in the new iMacs?

The graphics options go from 512MB to 2GB. The cards themselves (6750, etc) are very capable, but does the amount of VRAM matter? Will 512MB be sufficient for AP3 or should I go for the 2GB of graphics RAM? Why or why not? Thanks.

Well Aperture is one of the few programs in the world that will havely rely on the GPU. 512 MB should be suffiecient (*), but more will bring more speed to Aperture.
*: At least it is in my machine, though using brushes extensively will slow things down quite a bit.

  • Mac Pro graphics failure

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 2.0gb dual processor and fitted a ATi5770 card in the spring.
Today the machine has developed a serious problem.
It appears that the graphics are not being initialised and the monitor remains blank.
I swapped out the Ati5770 and fitted my old XT1900 back in.
Briefly it booted and loaded, got to the desk top and that too then fell black.
Rebooting the Mac Pro chimes and clearly goes though boot process.
Tried the Ati5770 in another Mac Pro and it worked.
I can also view the faulty machines desktop and interact with screen sharing.
Currently backing up via screen sharing to time capsule.
Anyone have any ideas or have solved similar problems please?

After tests early today may be the monitor power supply.
    Ordered a replacement

  • I5 MacBook Pro hi-res display/graphics failure

My wonderful new MBP just went kaput. It became non-responsive with a crazy very fine (it is hi res after all) lattice-pattern all over the display. This had happened once before, and a hard restart fixed it. This time - no dice. The lattice pattern appears over the gray start up screen, and that screen stalls at the apple logo.
It also won't start off of an alternate drive (one that I know works) - although you can see the start-up drive selection options when you press option on restart, and you can select the alternative drives. Even that selection screen, however, is covered by the lattice pattern.
Bad graphics card? Or? Any ideas? I've got a genius appointment in two days, but if I could find a solution on my own sooner I'd be happier.

I, too, just bought a brand new MBP and am having the same problem. I can't even see the screen anymore because the pattern has gotten so bad. It seems just like this problem with the older NVIDIA 8600 cards (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377), but the new MBP has a different card so I'm not really sure what to do. I'm trying to avoid going to Apple as I live an hour away from the nearest store. Any luck?
