Graphics Freezing and Stuttering

I have a 2012 6-core MacPro with aftermarket AMD 7950 Graphics Card and a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina with Intel Iris Pro Graphics (5200).
Since the update to Yosemite, graphics performance has been compromised severely.
When attempting to draw in Photoshop on both machines I get input lag from my stylus. When using Safari, it freezes constantly but recovers in a couple of seconds, with flash videos on YouTube appearing as slide shows until everything calms down. When interacting with anything else, there is a slight input lag, with graphics freezing for a split second before anything happens.
Last night, however, was the absolute final straw on my MacPro.
I was on a Skype video call with a client on my secondary monitor and running Photoshop on my Primary monitor. Input lag made it near impossible to draw smoothly. Opening Safari to look at a video the client sent me, the entire computer froze. However he could still see me on camera and I could still talk to him, and I could hear the video playing. I started mashing keyboard commands in panic and was clicking everywhere on screen. A minute later all my inputs happened at the same time for a couple seconds, followed by another minute of frozen display. Then 5 seconds unfrozen, then minute freeze, then 5 seconds unfrozen - rinse and repeat.
I got so frustrated I actually switched to a Microsoft Windows computer I use for video gaming. That computer is substantially less powerful than both my Macintoshes, yet it handled the same load with ease.
What can I do to fix this? I would actually like to get some work done without ripping my hair out.
Thanks
-Ben Anderson

Bump
after several days with that issue, yesterday i've tried to change back the graphic card to that which comes with my mac. In my case it was a HD5870.
Now everything works fine.... no freezes again.
It seems, that i can do now work normally, like the time before i've installed yosemite.
maybe thit saves my mac to get thrown out of the window
Best regards

  • Skype on Microsoft Lumia 535 freezes and stutters

Hello dear Microsoft, I am really happy with my Microsoft Lumia 535. Great phone, great price. Skype however (which is the prime application) really behaves bad though. It freezes and stutters all the time. For example, to open the app it takes very long. To see my recent contacts takes another 30 seconds or so. To type a message to a contact takes another 30 seconds and while typing it freezes and stutters again. The performance sucks, in short. Are we expecting an update soon? This is a really bad situation, where skype on other platforms runs like a charm, but on MS's own mobile platform, just sucks.... Hope this gets resolved very, very soon! Regards, Sijmen Koffeman

Hi, After I used the Windows Phone Recovery Tool (link:http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/how-to/wp8/phones-and-hardware/recover-my-phone) and restored my phone, Skype is running without any problems.Be advised that you should make a backup of your data and settings if you use that tool. Good luck, Si.

  • IMovie 4 freezing and stuttering

Here's my new thread to my old problem:
Installed new OX 10.3.9 bundled with iMovie 4 and QT 7. iMovie 4 does not work at all, even for simple video projects -- freezes and stutters and impossible to use. Problem is not related to number of audio clips -- adding just one audio clip greatly exacerbates the problem. Have added RAM and have plenty of available GB. Tried changing default H.264 setting within Quicktime (as suggested in QT thread). Still no improvement. It's been suggested that my system is inadequate, although per system reqs, mine should do. It's also been suggested that iMovie 4 and QT 7 are a troubled couple and just don't get along, but have not found a way to downgrade to QT 6. (The downgrader suggested only works for 7.0.1 or something; I have 7.1.3.)
My question now is: can I install a new version of iMovie that has the right version of Quicktime? What about iLife 5, which my system supports, at least for iMovie, which comes with QT 6.5.2? Will it overwrite my newer QT?
I know iMovie 2 is stable, and I could go back to it, but it's such a pain to switch operating systems, and that version is relatively primitive, so I'm really hoping to stabilize my new system. Then, I'll leave it alone!
    Thanks for any advice ...

    Hi
I think Sue "SDIllini" use to know how and where to find it. Try the search
    function in this forum.
My main advice is: Never change anything during a movie project. One never
knows what will happen and what new buggs that are introduced.
I have on my "reliabe" Mac: Mac OS X.3.9 + QT 6.5.2 + iMovie 5.0.2

  • Suddenly freezes and stutters

My movie project is now 32 minutes long and when doing a playback of the clips at the end of the project they freeze and stutter. The clips at the beginning are fine.
I have deleted the prefs file, restarted, put the playback on standard. But no help. Can anyone help?
    OS 10.5.8
    iMovie HD 6.03
    2GHz Intel Core Duo
    1,5GB RAM
26,62 GB free on Hard Disk

If the problem is not enough storage space, then increasing your space is what you need to do, as Catspaw and Karsten have suggested.
My guess is that the stuttering will not carry over to your final burned DVD. But but it is pesky for editing playback. Toggling back and forth between small and full screen sometimes can help you through the stuttering.
For the heck of it, you might try opening a new blank iMovie project, and then opening your current project so that the windows of the two projects display side by side. Then drag or copy-paste the offending clips from your current project into the new project. They may not stutter there, in which case you can edit them in the new project and then drag or copy-paste them back into your current project.

  • Adding Transitions freezes and stutters playback in Preview.

I'm posting this as a new issue. Since I've narrowed down my "stuttering/freezing on playback" problem while in Preview/Edit mode.
This begins to happen as SOON as I add a transition. Whether I add it automatically, or manually.
The clips play fine without transitions in the project and the Event window. These are clips from a Kodak Zi6, I believe shot HD at 60fps, and I'm using NTSC 30fps to create the project. When I "get info" on my clips, the codecs listed are H.264 and AAC, dimensions 1280x720.
When the Movie Project is exported & viewed in QuickTime, it plays smoothly.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as I'd like to preview my work as I go!
This movie is LESS than one minute long!

    UPDATE - A workaround?
after what you posted about converting the file to the apple codec AIC - it occurred to me to try this.
Put a clip in the project browser - it starts stuttering - with or without transitions.
click on clip and select "clip adjustments". Now when you need to run slow mo you click the "convert clip" button. Do this even though you don't need to slomo the clip and it will come up with "converting whole clip" - this can take a while if the clip/event the clip is from is quite long. Hang in there. Click done. ......and......
    all works perfectly.
It seems like the converter converts the whole event because if you now choose other clips from the event they too work with no problems! So looks like... before you start run the conversion on a clip from all the events you are about to use and then you can work normally...
I've run a test project and now transistions/ green screen/ PiP all work smooth. IS this the workaround we needed?
Do you know if the convertion to AiC changes size or quality? I cant tell at the moment. But it works! (well so far.....)
Please let me know if this works for you too - if so it might be worth starting another thread as so many people are having the stutter problem and i've not seen a workaround yet that's easy to do.
    Anyone?
Apple - we should not need to do this!

  • Video freezing and stuttering watching a film

Thought i would treat myself and download heroes season three from itunes, pressed play and was treated to a image that stop froze and jumped. my comp has been updated to 10.4.11 and i'm running quicktime 7.6 pro. Looked at some of the threads and i don't seem to be running any components listed as messing with qt. What should i see in the qt components? and should i erase any of the others.
    thanx mona

Are they HD quality? If so you have nowhere near the power in that iBook to play them, not even close. SD should play OK, as they do say a G4 1 Ghz or more.

  • At the start of a song, iTunes freezes and it stutters

With the new install of iTunes on Windows XP, it consumes more than 97% of CPU at the start of a song with the result that the song plays like as if some one is stuttering the song and I hate it. It was never an issue with the earlier version of iTunes. The newer version also consumes 17-20% of CPU to play a song and this was not the case either earlier.
Is there a workaround to this? I have an IBM T41 laptop. Nothing has changed on my laptop except that I have a newer version of iTunes.
Your help or thoughtful ideas are appreciated except the suggestion to buy a newer and faster laptop or switch to Mac OS.

I had this problem with the freezing and stuttering. I solved this by unchecking 'crossfade playback' in edit/preferences/playback. It means you have a pause between songs during playback, but thats like most CD players anyway.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Signal breaks up and stutters

Forgive me if this is the same thing that others have been describing as pixelation, but I havent heard it described this way so I wasn't sure if it's the same thing. I have been having problems particularly with one of my Moto DVRs on certain channels, Local HD, BBCa, that looks remarkably like what used to happen on DirecTV during a storm when the sat signal was being affected by the weather. Freezing and stuttering, and it is recorded that way on the DVR. It's quite frustrating, as that was one of the reasons I switched from DirecTV. Does this sound like the same thing that people have been using attenuators with their TIVOs to fix? Is my DVR wonky?

Thanks for the quick response; this forum seems to be geared more towards actually helping than just complaining. Do you know if once the cable cards and attenuators and all are set up correctly in the TIVOs, are people still having this problem? Because between this issue and the bad guide, it might finally be enough to drive me over the edge to buying an HD Tivo, if I knew it would take care of it.

  • Freezing and rendering problems

    Hi all,
I run an eMac PPC with OS 10.3.4. It is about three years old. I switch power off each night and restart every morning with automatic login for myself. Lately I have the following problems:
    1. The system sometimes (read: often nowadays) freezes a very short time after boot-up. I can move the mouse and perhaps select something, but then everything freezes and I have to reboot with the on-off switch. If the system does NOT freeze a very short time after booting, I can usually do a day's work without serious problems.
    2. Mail crashes quite frequently. This could of course be a separate problem.
    3. Sometimes the Mac screensaver, which shows a selection of photographs zooming in slowly, has problems rendering the pictures. I see a lot of flickering small rectangles in the pictures. The desktop picture (which is steady, not zooming) has no trouble of this kind.
    4. Sometimes there are tiny errors on the screen: small short lines where they should not be, small pieces of a line or characters missing. In these cases usually also problem 3 shows up.
Are these problems related? Can reinstalling the system help? Can monitor problems cause system freezes? Please tell me this is not a hardware problem...
    Greetings,
    Sjaak

Not that you want to hear this, but it's probably a hardware problem.
2004 eMacs had an issue with a batch of capacitors that went bad, leaking and bulging, consequently causing issues with graphics, freezing and power exactly as you have described.
Fortunately Apple recognised the problem and initiated a repair extension program on the affected models. To see if you qualify check your mac against the details here http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/emac.html to see if you qualify.
I have the same issues, and have found a workaround that's doing great until I can get my machine to a service centre, in order to ease the problem boot the mac in safe mode (hold down shift) and log in as admin. navigate to system then library and find all the graphics drivers (I can't remember where) and delete all the nvidia and old ati ones (basically leaving only those that are correct for your machines card). I've lost some graphical abilities but otherwise everything is great.

  • Freezing Macbook Pro. Graphical glitches and occasional 3 tones on start up. Hardware test shows no errors. Is it RAM or a graphics card on the way out, or software?

Recently my MacBook Pro has been freezing and showing bad graphical glitches. Multiple restarts eventually fix it and a couple of times the three tones break, three tones break warning has occurred on start up. From what I can find this is usually a RAM error but after doing a hardware check I get the response all is OK. This still happens after the check and I am unsure what the problem could be. Can anyone help? Could it be a memory issue, a hard drive issue, Graphics card issue (drivers are up to date) or is something up with the software. I also have a Bootcamp partition running Windows 7 too and this is a problem that presents itself there too.

    Most likely to be RAM:
    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

I would suggest you take it to an Apple Store for a free diagnostic.

  • 'Normal use' ok ; Gaming = Graphics 'snow' and then Screen Freezes

    History is that I'm a PC convert from Nov 05, and happy with the move. Played Civ IV and WoW without problem until around Nov 06. Then Civ IV started crashing; Screen got 'snowy' graphics and then froze. Was within warranty at that stage . Lesson to be had here in extended warranty. Didn't make much of this because I was finished with these games anyway, and 'normal' applications and internet etc use have been fine all along & still are, so just stopped gaming. Now (Feb) decided to get back into WoW. Same 'snow' and 'freeze' problem when open this game, as well as Civ IV, including after reloading software. There is no error message, just the freeze and the 'multi-coloured circle of death'! Things I've tried;
    - Apple Software update
    - Apple extended Hardware test; passed all
    - Clean re-load of all software
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Minimised the performance settings for WoW, including running in a window; this has extended time before crash from a few seconds to up to several minutes. Not long enough to get to lvl 70!
    - Checked that my model doesn't fall under any extended warranty's!
    - Downloaded and run 'Rember' = "All tests passed."
    - Downloaded 'latest' ATI Radeon drivers from their web (were very old & not a direct match so not sure that this was of any use)
Below is 'stuff that might be helpful', including the log!
Idea's anyone? If it's something wrong with the graphics card then I'd like to know 'for sure' before forking out for a replacement. Other stuff to try?
    Thanks, Mike

Yes, it smells like the video card, because it only crashes when running the high-end graphics. Presumably this is because only the games use the video card; if it were another piece of hardware then normal applications would crash too. And because I've done a clean software reload it shouldn't be a software problem.
However, I'd still have liked some greater certaintly before replacing the video card, e.g. some type of hardware test. I don't want to replace the card and then find that I've still got the same problem.
I don't get a grey crash screen, it's just stuck on the distorted last screen shot, with the twirling multi-coloured circle. Then when I turn off the mac it goes black.
Know of some way to 'test' the video card?

  • Macbook Pro ''15 Retina Graphic glitches and freeze

Hey, I hope some of you may help me. Sometimes when I open my Macbook and it's awaking from sleep it freeze and I have a distorted screen with wired colours, I need to reboot it then, but after rebooting all is fine :/ Is that a software bug or related to my Logicboard ? I just got it back after a warranty case where something on my old Logicboard died after 8 weeks after purchase. I bought it this June. I have that Nvidia graphics in there. Here is a pic I made: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42689244/IMAG0090.jpg

What is an SMC reset? The gfxcardstatus worked. Partially. I now know something is either wrong with the nvidia graphic card or its software(the hd 4000 one is better from a performance test by individually testing both cards).
How does the apple exchange work? Just walk in with the Mac and they resolve/replace the Mac or what? Any ideas?
    Thanks

The reset is a little tricky and might take a few tries before you do it successfully, keep eye on for the colour change on the magsafe connector

  • Qosmio G40-127 - Graphic Card freezez and turn of the screen

    Hi there.
I have a Toshiba Qosmio G40-127 and I have an problem with the graphic card, it freezez and turn of the screen for 1-2 seconds sometimes when I play World of warcraft,
why is it like this and is there any updates for my graphic driver?

If you use Google you can find many links to different forums about WOW and Vista. Obviously you are not alone with this problem. I recommend you to visit http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/index.html?sid=1

  • PowerBook Constant Freeze and Graphics Problems

I have a Powerbook 12" 1.33Ghz Leopard 10.5.2 , I star to work in anything and in a few minutes its freezes and appears a Kernel Panic or de backend System Text start to output reports overwriting the last graphic image.. here a picture..
    http://cyberkiko3d.com/down/photo.jpg
I remove the memory card, and stills hapening..
I want to know is this is just a kernel problem that it stops formating or is a hardware problem involving the LogicBoard or Graphic Card..
    Thanks

I guess memory can fail over time. I just haven't experienced it myself. (Or heard of it, but it is a piece of hardware).
You can test your RAM by either using your system installation / restore discs (the original grey discs that came with your machine) and pop in Disc 1 and reboot the computer holding down the OPTION key and from there, you will get the choice for Apple Hardware Test, which you can use to do a basic test of your RAM.
Second, if you ever signed up for AppleCare and got the TechTool Deluxe disc that comes with it, you can use that too for a more extensive RAM test. Just be careful not to use it to diagnose anything with your hard drive. Just use it for RAM. (Be warned, as their is an incompatibility with Tiger that can ruin your drive. Though I see you have Leopard, so don't even know if it works).
The other test you can do, as suggested by many of the top users in these forums is "Rember" which tests your RAM and should let you know what's going on. I used it once after using it as a suggestion (taking someone else's suggestion and using it for my own testing) and it showed the second module of memory that I bought on eBay--the one that doesn't cause kernel panics--to pass.
You can find that here: [http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember>
Also, when you get your RAM replacement, I highly recommend getting Apple OEM suppliers such as modules from Samsung, Hynix, or Micron (manufactured by Crucial). They should be trouble free.
I say should because the Samsung 1GB module I bought for my 12-inch PowerBook from OtherWorld Computing has worked flawlessly for almost two years now. The one I was talking about previously, that crashed my 15-inch machine? A Samsung one as well. So, it is true that these Aluminum PowerBook G4s are picky about the RAM installed.

I forgot to ask you... what brand RAM do you have installed? (If you know and it is labeled).

  • Graphic Artifacts and display freezing/blacking

My 15inch MBP, purchased in July of 06, seems to be giving me major problems.
I'm getting really odd graphics artifacts all the time. It can be as simple as a multicolor line in a window, on the desktop or through an icon. Othertimes its as major as an icon or section of a graphic showing up like its been scrambled and combined with really bright colors. Sometimes it looks like a triangle of a few pixels that have been stretched out.
All of the issues are related to software, as I can make them go away by changing window size—and they only exist in the window or application. The heat coorelates to how severe the artifacts can get, if I'm about 60˚C I'll notice them more, so as a photographer I keep my fan running when I'm doing important work to avoid the crashes.
And finally, the computer will crash with little explanation. Not like things timing out and I look mouse function, but things like the entire screen slowly being tinted green, or everything but the mouse seizes up(when this happens, my caps lock button still works, I can move the mouse just fine, but I can't click anything;commands don't work either.) The crashing can happen when I'm working in Photoshop(comp intensive) or if I only have Mail.app open and I happen to click on the finder icon too fast(very simple tasks).
I have the funds to get this repaired, although I'm confident they will simply replace the logic board and that will not solve my issue—only temporarily put it off another few months.
I'm waiting for the 10.5.2 update, hoping that will fix something. I have all other updates.
    Any suggestions?

One thing to try would be to borrow an external display and see if the same artifacts occur on the external display. If so, you might have a graphics chip problem, either with the chip itself or with its attachment to the logic board. If the problem gets worse with heat, it may be that the ball grid array that holds the chip to the logic board is beginning to fail. It sounds like your software requires intense processor usage, which will generate more heat. As the heat builds, the failing ball grid array will work less well and you will get these visual artifacts and freezing and other symptoms.
You might try one of the laptop coolers with fans to keep your Mac as cool as possible and see if this helps. The other thing to try is to reinstall the OS and see if that helps. If reinstalling the OS does not help, very likely you are dealing with some sort of hardware issue, and very likely they would want to replace the logic board.
Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it happens to show anything?
    Good luck!
