Graphics Gone in Acrobat 8.1.2

Hello. Acrobat Pro is a killer app. However, I might have flipped the wrong switch and killed it.
None of the graphics in any of my Adobe Acrobat documents will show up. I get a blank grey slate instead.
I use a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4G of RAM. OS 7.5.2. Printers include USB networked HP OfficeJet Pro L7780 and LaserJet 1300n, also run by USB hub.
Acrobat Pro is 8.1.2. I'm quite sure I mucked it up at a medical conference in Hawaii while trying to scan in documents from the conference.
Where did the scalpel slip?

graffiti,
Your forum name is perfect.
I'm a sophisticated end user. I don't have time to deal with minutia. Is ReadIRIS Pro 11.5 the best OCR on the Mac platform? I never know if MacWorld gives me the straight scoop. Soemtimes when I use it to OCR .pdf files, I get font substitution for indivdual letter.

  • A way to undo Formatted Text & Graphics OCR from Acrobat 7?

Over the course of a few months, my company received a large number of PDF files for a project for which the internal policy was that every file should be text searchable.  Unfortunately, we did not save the native files in any sort of convenient way, having at that time not realized that failing to do so was a very bad idea.  We ran OCR on every one of the files that we received, which total approximately 4,000.  At the time that we received the majority of these files, my company was still using Acrobat 7; we've since upgraded to version 8.
Recently we discovered that there were discrepancies between our electronic copies and the hard copy printouts from which our electronic copies had been generated:  in the electronic copies, uppercase F had changed to P, S had changed to 8, etc.  We eventually worked out that it must have been that at some point a computer was mistakenly set to run OCR using the Formatted Text & Graphics setting, as opposed to either Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact).  This was absolutely not want we wanted, as for our purposes using a type of OCR that causes the original images to change essentially renders the files useless.  My questions, then, are the following:
    1)  As I asked in the title, is there any way of undoing Formatted Text & Graphics OCR that was performed in Acrobat 7?
    2)  Is there a way of identifying files that have had Formatted Tex & Graphics OCR performed on them (something stored in the metadata)?
Rebuilding these files from scratch is going to require a gargantuan effort, so any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
Bernd's been across the mountain and seen the bear; so, you can bank on what he posted.
But, just because, I'll second his "no".
Formatted Text and Graphics (Acrobat 7, 8) and ClearScan (Acrobat 9, X) effectively replace the image of textual characters.
If a character is not recognized as 'something' a bit map is of the thing is left behind.
Now, while Acrobat or other OCR engines (Abbey FineReader, AdLib, Adobe Capture, etc.) are really rather impressive no OCR engine has 100% accuracy 100% of the time. Other variables  come into play (scan lamp age/brightness, platen cleanliness, scanner mechanicals cleanliness, calibration of scanner, hard copy 'quality' (characters' darkness density, contrast between characters and background, presence of lack thereof of boxed in text, text in or adjacent to line arcs/circles, etc.).
All of that is for semantic content that is "textual". Semantic content that is not textual (but, coincidently may contain text) provides little to no useful OCR output (e.g., graphs, drawings, etc.). Validate this by performing OCR on such a PDF then Export to a plain text file. Print this file out and compare that to the source paper or the scanned image.
There is no metadata info that identifies the OCR mode used.
Perhaps something buried in the bowls of PDF page description content; if so, not intrinsically easy to obtain.
My suggestion (fwiw) - move forward with re-scan.
A server product would help to move it along but a high speed scanner hooked to a local machine (with ample resources) and Acrobat Pro 8 or 9 get it done. With Acrobat 8 or 9 use Search Image (Exact).  In Preferences check the category Create PDF or TIFF to assure it is what you desire. Check Acrobat's scan presets to assure you have what you want vis-a-vis Compression and Filtering. Do avoid "Automatic".

  • Where's the Advanced|Document Processing|Batch Processing menu gone in Acrobat 11?

I have Acrobat 8.3.1 Professional at work, we're migrating to new machines (Win7) with Acrobat 11 Standard.
I've run into a problem:  In 11 Standard, where is the equivalent to the Advanced|Document Processing|Batch Processing menu command from Acrobat 8 Pro??
I have 2 sequences I need to be able to run for docment filing with Court.
Both sequences focus on a specific folder where I put (sometimes quite large) batches of documents converted from Word to PDF.
The 1st sequence goes through however many files are in the target folder.  For each file, it turns on the thumbnails, and turns off the menu bar.
I then do some tinkering en mass with them in Acrobat.
Then I run the 2nd sequence, which turns off the thumbnails, and turns the menu bar back on - this is a requirement from Court.
I just started tinkering with Acrobat 11 on my new machine, and the menus seem quite different!
Currently, as each sequence runs, I have to sit there clicking "OK" for each and every file, which is tedious at best!  I'd love to find something that'll give me the same functionality, with Acrobat doing all the grunt work!

Ugh.  I kinda thought that someone might say this.
Ironically, the same situation arose a couple years ago when we got the machines we're migrating *from* - The Powers That Be thought that 8 Standard would work, and I quickly educated them that "nope, yer gonna hafta spring for me a copy of Pro!"
So, it looks like "here we go again!"
    Thanks anyway!
Now I get to cause our purchasing folks NEW grief!  I've told them repeatedly that they should REALLY involve me in these purchases, so I can do the pre-purchase research, and save everyone a lot of bother.

  • My Toolbars are gone when Acrobat is opened.

When I open Acrobat 8.0 Standard on its own my default tool bars are open, but when I double-click on a .pdf file, my tool bars are gone. I can reset them and they reappear, but they are gone again the next time Acrobat opens when a .pdf is opened. Any suggestions?

You can use the function keys (F7, F8, or F9) to get them back, I don't remember which of the combinations - it is easy enough to try.

  • After recent update, button graphics gone?

After the recent Safari update the all the buttons for actions are grey. It is the same in mail too. The buttons still work. I am trying to figure out if this a coincidence or not. If it isn't a coincidence, do others suffering the same problem have a solution. I am a mailtags user, and I wondered if there was any incompatibility there.

Thanks for looking at my question. I see I wasn't specific enough. The graphics on the buttons are gone. They are only grey. I can see a picture would be useful.

  • Private/Authenticated site : graphics gone

Any issues with iTunes U servers? I can access my private/authenticated site as as admin and regular user, but all images are gone and replaced with a broken link graphic.

    Hi,
Please ignore this post, I just realized that I left the "itunesu.com:sites" portion out of the URN.

  • Graphics gone crazy

    hi guys,
Ive recently been having some problems with my graphics, its been happening for a couple of weeks now i think, maybe when the xorg-server got updated?
Im running xfce with composite enabled, and when i click on the xfce menu or un-minimize a window like firefox for example my graphics become garbled for maybe a fraction of a second.
Kind of like in this picture i found http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t97/ … pshot2.png
I thought my graphics card was on its way out, but i booted into another arch version which i havnt updated in about a month or something, and everything seems fine.
It also seems to stop if i disable compositing.
Any idea why this might be happening?
Ive got the nvidia-drivers installed, and havnt changed any settings since. I think it just started happening after i did a pacman -Syu a couple of weeks ago.
    Thanks
    Kane

  • App store icon graphics gone, so are screen shots.  Updates page looks like it's not properly loaded - just text, no icons and no 'install' option. Can anyone help?

It happened after i did a load of updates.  Icons are now missing - not a huge problem because they still download (just nice to get a glimpse of what i'm buying - there's no screenshots any more either).
Updates page doesn't look like it's loaded properly - just a load of text down left side, no images and no option to install updates.
I've done a hard restart and it hasn't helped.  I'm hoping i don't need to do something more drastic...?

You could try "buying" a free app, which might help to reset things?

  • Graphics gone all lines

    hi
anyone know whats wrong with my macbook pro
    thankyou

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Creating 508 Adobe Acrobat Accessible Docs from various sources and formats

Note: I have no 508 training, except for perusing of documents on the web.
I need to create searchable 508 Compliance report documents for Adobe Acrobat (not for the web at this time) from merged PDF files.
To create these reports, I do not have originals, all I have been given are PDFs, some of which have been created from Word and others scanned (some with OCR and some not).  Some of the reports are converted directly from Word but may also be a combination of electronic and scanned pages (signature pages, graphics, appendices, etc.)  Often the scanned pages have not been scanned to actual letter size (8.5 x. 11), but are smaller.  Sometimes they are larger or A4.
In preparing the final report, I take all of the PDFs and merge them into one document.
I add watermarks and headers/footers to the whole document.
In order to get all of the watermarks and headers/footers to align on the page with ease, I need all of the pages to be the standard letter size of 8.5 x 11 without losing any information.
The only way I can figure out how to achieve this is to take the pages (usually scanned pages) that need to be enlarged (sometimes reduced) and Print to a PDF.
This will create a new PDF of the existing PDF; making it the standard letter size of 8.5 x 11, without cropping.
I can then replace the odd-sized pages with the new PDF pages, creating a document where all of the pages are now the standard letter size of 8.5 x 11.
Once my document is all the same size, I can add my watermarks and header/footers.
I still need to make the whole document a searchable 508 Adobe Acrobat compliant document.
I believe I need to run the OCR Text Recognition to convert/capture scanned pages and pictures to make this document a searchable 508 Adobe Acrobat compliant document.
I tried running the OCR text recognition on the current merged (160 pages) PDF document (before adding my watermarks, headers/footers) to capture the scanned text, and I receive the following errors:
            This page contains renderable text.
This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured.
When I ran the Adobe Acrobat Accessibility checker, I get the following errors:
The first page is a scanned signature page: the error says
1 image with no alternate text
1 element(s) that are not contained within the structure tree.
    1.     Inaccessible page content
Most of the remaining detailed report errors are:
    Inaccessible page content
1 element(s) that are not contained within the structure tree.
I tested one page and used the Touch Up Reading Order tool and added alternate text to a signature block, ran the accessibility checker again, but still came back with alternate text errors.
I am open to suggestions.  Feel free to advise me from beginning to end in regards to what I’m trying to accomplish.
    THANK YOU!

You do have a boat load of work.
         This page contains renderable text.
This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured.
This isn't an "error". Acrobat's OCR cannot process  PDF page content that is not exclusively an image.
1 image with no alternate text
When properly tagged, an image or graphic in a PDF is identified by the PDF element "Figure"
    (<Figure>).
All Figures shall have an Alternate Text Description.
You may have images/graphics that are tagged as Figures but should be Artifacts.
OCR - The hidden layer of OCR output provided by Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact)
is, for practicable purposes, not something one can effectively created Tagged PDF from.
Prior to Acrobat 9 one would use Formatted Text and Graphics. With Acrobat 9 one would use
ClearScan. Alternatively, one might just re-key the content in an authoring application and output Tagged, accessible PDF.
    Watermarks & Header/Footers -
Oh boy; well, once you have everything else in a "green board" line up you'd add these and manually
"fold" them into the structure tree via proper tagging.
So, the first step is to gain at least a fundamental understanding of what an Accessible PDF is and
how to create it. Then you'd want to become familiar with Section 508 1194.22.
As each of the paragraphs are correlated to WCAG 1.0, you'll want to review it to understand what
the correlation is and how it relates to PDF.
However, Section 508 will be changing.

  • Question About Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended

i dont know the program that well..but im trying to put together a pdf of images, a different image on each page of the pdf..i pretty much got that part down
my problem is someone images which resolutions arent that big are coming out much smaller then even there resolution so i was wondering how these can be resized with acrobat while on the page that im creating
like i said dont get confused the images are a good size outside of the program so its not just resizing the image and thats that..its when there added to a page in acrobat that they show smaller then they actually are..this is only a select few so please someone tell me if theres way within the program to resize an image on the page

I think the print margin aspect depends on how you are creating the PDF. If you open the graphics directly in Acrobat, the graphics will open with the margins defined in the graphic in the cases I have done. Small pictures have a real small margin and such. Laying what you want out in another application, be it WORD or one of the Adobe layout packages, is the better way to accomplish the task. Acrobat is meant to provide printing, not layout like you are trying to do.
To put the graphics in directly and be able to adjust size, you would need to add blank pages and on each locate the image on a button (Tools menu). The button would then be set up with the ICON only, using the image at the icon. The advantage of this approach is that you can scale the graphic. If you import the graphic directly, you can not scale it.
Again, the best approach is to use another program to layout your photos as desired and then print to the Adobe PDF printer. The other user has suggested WORD and that is one possibility. If you use WORD, be sure to use the ctrl-Enter or break menu to create new pages. Do not use line breaks to create the paging.

  • License recovery, Acrobat Pro 9.5 in Windows XP

Most of the discussions about using the license recovery tool are from Mac users.  This is not the case here.  After about 1-1/2 years, Acrobat Pro 9.5.0 suddenly stopped working and displayed the following error message:
Licensing for this product has stopped working.
You cannot use this product at this time.  You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator or Adobe customer support for help.
    (148:3)
Using the REPAIR installation from the original disk was of no help.  Uninstalling and then reinstalling Acrobat 9 Pro from the original disk did not solve this problem either.  Using the Adobe license recovery 109 tool did restore usability.  However, now I get a box with an OK button I must click before I can log into any profile.  The box contains a couple of odd characters but nothing readable.
This license is used on only two computers; the other one hasn't exhibited this odd behavior.  It could have been tied to a Windows XP update as I routinely download and install them, but that's also the case with the other computer and it doesn't misbehave in this way.  I have different licenses of Acrobat 9 Pro installed on other computers, and none of them has this problem, including one laptop running Windows 7.

    Jeff,
Thank you for the reply.  Yes - I ran Lavasoft Registry Tuner shortly
before Acrobat 9.5 Pro stopped working properly.  Acrobat is now back to
normal except for the unknown box that appears before the Windows XP log-in
screen.  Clicking OK seems to be all that's needed, and as far as I know
there are no programs that don't function normally.
The following has nothing to do with this topic, but I wanted to tell
somebody at Adobe: the reason I haven't gone to Acrobat 10 (except for the
Windows 7 laptop) is because the extra security (I assume) in Acrobat 10
prevents me from using Fullshot or other screen capture programs to take
pictures of specific parts of a page within an open Acrobat document.  I
have to do this routinely as part of my job as engineering (technical)
    writer.
    Thanks again.

  • Acrobat 9 pro extended question about saving -- yes

    Hi guys,
my problem is kinda simple: If i change a pdf document using acrobat 9 pro and save, it just saves at the original document I was opening. Of course, when I choose save to, it suggest the own documents folder.
Problem now: If I change something and want to close it, the program asks me to save. If I answer yes, it doesnt just saves, it's suggesting the own documents folder, like I'd say "save to".
Is there any possibilty to change this?

  • Why do fonts and vector images look broken in Acrobat Pro (on retina display)

I often get scared of doing something horribly wrong every time I export to PDF from Indesign CC. I know I didn't mess up but my scariness is the effect of the terrible graphic support in Acrobat when viewing the pdf's. Fonts and Vector images look broken and the look of fonts only gets better after zooming in at an incredible 6400% ! Are my preference settings in Acrobat wrong or is it because Acrobat doesn't support Retina yet?

  • Troubleshooting for Acrobat 7

    hello
Since 2009 I have installed on my PC win7pro 64 and Adobe Acrobat 7 an it works fine.
After Microsoft patch day on 27/08/2014 the problems started.
Every time I open a Document to edit it, for example, to insert a page or only to "save as" to, hangs acrobat 7 and can only be terminated by the task manager of Windows 7. The CPU load for the application is 99% before termination. I have Acrobat 7 uninstalled and then reinstalled, which worked without problems. However, the error occurs further on.
An incompatibility I can exclude since the application for 5 years worked perfectly and I want to restore this state again, without the need to upgrade to a newer version.
Does anyone have any idea or suggestion about this error and how to locate and eliminate him?
    Thanks for any response

    On behalf of Adobe ...
The first version of Acrobat that is at all fully compatible with any 64-bit version of WIndows (including WIndows Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit) is Acrobat Standard 8.1 and Acrobat Pro 8.1. The viewing capabilities of Acrobat 7 may have been working with Windows 7 64-bit, but a number of system features including PDF creation via the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance simply don't work in that environment. Quite a few WIndows 7 patches have recently come out to increase security and since Acrobat 7, a tremendous amount of work has gone into Acrobat and Reader to close potential malware attack points. It is indeed possible that some of the tightening of Windows 7 code affecting run time libraries may have had some effect on your ability to run Acrobat 7.
But again, Acrobat 7 (both Standard and Pro) as well as Adobe Reader 7 were never designed for nor supported under WIndows 7 at all, much less Windows 7 64-bit.
