Graphics of Z230 Tower Workstation under Ubuntu

I am seeking help with solving an issue with the graphics  component of my new Z230 workstation (product number D1P34AV).
I am using the workstation with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
The problem started with the graphics card did not wake up after a suspend. To my surprise, the lspci utility determines "VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 13bb (rev a2)". This surprises me because my model was supposed to be equipped with Intel on-board graphics, not an NVIDIA graphics card. When I enabled Integrated Graphics in BIOS (why was it disabled by default?), Ubuntu booted into a black screen. So, I would very much appreciate any help with the following two questions:
1. What is really the configuration of my computer's graphics component?
2. What product-specific drivers (i.e. Debian packages) do I need to install on Ubuntu to have a better user experience?

I opened a case at HP and this was the response. The driver pack resolved the problem.

  • Orkut login issues firefox 3.6.13 under Ubuntu 10.10

    Hi,
I am novice to Ubuntu10.10. I am unable to login to the Orkut using firefox 3.6.13 under Ubuntu 10.10. I can login to orkut with same credentials on Windows XP. I guess the problem might be with Java. I have already installed the java plug in. When I type about: Plugins in url, I can see Java(TM) Plug0in 1.6.0_22.I have also installed JDK and other available stuff from canonical partners.
Please take a look and advise some direction.
    Thanks for your time.

Thanks cor-el for taking time to investigate and reply. Sorry for the delay on my part, I tried the suggestions you made but it did not help.
Actually the problem turnout with the firewall . I just disabled some firewall settings and was able to login again. I will investigate further to understand how to configure firewall properly to white list some sites.
    Thanks again.

I wanted to know if it depends on the model of the web cam

if that were true, there is another way to use the web cam using java and integrate it with the jmf
my application should use the webcam under linux

All this works fine under Windows
Fortunately linux should be spotless and without bugs :)

  • Cannot load TigerDirect and many other sites under Ubuntu. Whats that about?

Under Ubuntu, cannot load this and many other sites. Even Amazon, which initially loads, chokes at checkout time when ssl pages are accessed.

After connecting to wifi, iPad checks to see if connectivity to internet is possible, and/or if further login is required. To do that - it checks connectivity to www.apple.com . If not - it assums wifi is no good to you, and switches back to 3G.
There is a valid reasoning behind it, but indeed, it sounds like there are scenarious in which there should be option to disable this...

  • What workstation graphics card should i run under bootcamp?

I run Rhino (64 bit) with windows 7 through bootcamp. the software mfg's recomended graphics card is the AMD FirePro v7900 or v5900, and user group recos the nvidea quadro 4000. I am currently using an Nvidea gtx285 and driving two displays from it. Looking to upgrade both memory and video card for optimal performance.

Mixing nVidia and ATI under Windows is usually a no=go.
The FirePro is single slot and 150W so only needs 1 x 6-pin power cable.
Amazon has $790 or $100 more than the v7900  NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac
I take it the GTX 285 doesn't work well enough?
If you don't care about early boot screen there are GTX 570/580 take up two slots.
    some upgrade ideas:
Put Windows on an SSD and put your work data files on another drive.
is 2008 model uses FBDIMMs 8 x 4GB is max - 8 DIMMs though is ideal.
    Crucial Technology CT2CP51272AP80E 8 GB
    DDR3 (2009+)  24GB costs what 8GB FBIMM would.

  • Activate/deactivate WiFi on Lenovo B5400 under Ubuntu 14.04

I have a Lenovo B5400 with Ubuntu 14.04 x64. The ethernet port works fine. How can I enable/disable the wifi connection? I have no hardware button for this functionality. Under Windows I can press Fn+F5 and a dialog window appears, but I cannot find this functionality under Linux.
    lspci | grep Network produces:
04:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
The answer from here is incomplete; any other idea?
    Thanks.
Later edit: The output of rfkill list all is:
0: tpacpi_bluetooth_sw: Bluetooth Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes
1: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes

I've got the same Lenovo B5400 with Linux Mint 17 (based on Ubuntu 14.04). I've checked that fn+F5 works to enable/disable wifi. But the wifi is not directly supported by the kernel of this ubuntu version, so you have to previously install the driver. You have two choices:
-Update the kernel (I've done that, i'm using 3.13.0-29)
-backcompile the driver for the wifi chip, following these instructions: (from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2205497&page=2)
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
    # needed only if you don't have yet that package
    git clonehttp://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723be
    # needed only if you don't have yet downloaded rtl8723be
    cd rtl8723be
    git checkout 604aa9058fb9e5bb1cf571c99989d081f8fc8b9
    # because of older kernel issues
    make clean
    make
    sudo make install
    sudo modprobe rtl8723be
    echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

  • Create RPM native installer under Ubuntu

    Hi all,
I'm successfully creating .deb native installers on an Ubuntu machine from a .air file. I'm using AIR 2.6 SDK.
On the same machine I tried  creating .rpm packages from the same .air file but without success.
It seems that the .rpm package is corrupted. After some tests it turned out that the .rpm is just a .deb package renamed.
Do I need to build the package under a different distribution that supports .rpm or maybe did I something  wrong?
    Thanks for any help,
    Paolo

    Hi Paolo,
That is the expected behavior. To create native installers for a particular distribution, you have to create it natively on that machine. eg, on Windows, you can only create an exe, on Mac a dmg, on Debian distros, a .deb and so on.(You may rename it to any other extension, but it won't work)
So, to build a rpm, you have to be natively on a distro that supports RPM(officially supported RPM distros are Opensuse and Fedora)
    Hope this helps.

  • Performance Tools Sun Studio 12 under Ubuntu

I want to use the hardware counter under a x86-64 Ubuntu (Feisty). But the system isn't supported by the performance analyzer and the hardware counter aren't available. Exist any opportunity to use it or should i install red hat enterprise or suse enterprise. Gives there any free OS where the HW counters working?

You can try Sun Studio 12 on any machine you want. The 'unsupported' means: it's your choice, you are at your own risk, you are on your own. However, we still would be willing to hear from you, we would also help if we can. Your input and feedback are welcome!
You can even file RFE on bugs.sun.com if you feel the performance on Ubuntu is better, worth recommended, worth to be added to the 'supported platform' list, etc. Voice of Customer is always welcome too!

  • What program do I use to install Reader under Ubuntu

I am trying to install a later version of Adobe Reader than comes from the Ubuntu repository. When I use Adobe's download Reader page, I get the typical download box that asks if I want to open the file or save it. The default opening program on my system is VLC media player, which can't be right. What program should I select so Adobe Reader installs properly? (The Adobe site says if I get a "run or save" option I should pick "run".

There is one and only one player available on the Adobe website. Use this URL:
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/
It will give you a few choices for Linuix. I have not clue what would be appropriate for your version of Ubuntu.
