Graphics problem: pixelated articles all over the screen?

I've been getting this on the odd occasion lately.

When it happens the whole machine goes dead, no screen-capture possible, which makes me think it's a hardware problem, and you need to hard reboot. Sometimes it just persists through the reboots, too.
I'm on 10.5.5, the Intel Core 2 Duo 15'' model from about mid-07. GeForce 8600M GT card in it.
I imagine it's a fairly common problem since I've seen it mentioned elsewhere (although without adequate explanations/fixes), indeed that isn't even my image.
Ideas please? I'm going abroad shortly and don't want my MBP to die in foreign lands where I can't get her help.

Well, best guess is it's a problem with:
the graphics chip itself
the motherboard
the lead from motherboard to screen
If one or more of these is causing problems now I'd let Apple take a look at it before you travel ...

I updated my iMac to 10.7.3 and about an hour later the screen began to flicker with a gray line on the upper side, and it also flicker green and red small pixel lines all over the screen, mainly green. The computer froze with these pixels, so I shut it off and restarted it, and there were this green lines everywere. So I turned it off, and the next day I turned it on and it began to work just fine, but suddenly the same thing happened again, and when I restart the computer again there are these green and some red pixels everywere.
I've read 10.7.3 is giving people many problems, but I never saw that it gave one like this. How can I fix this, or what will Apple do to fix this problem they caused me with their update.
    Thanks

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Random pixels appearing all over the screen

hey guys, this i the first time something like this since i bought this system 4 years ago.
the system boots up fine and runs fine, but there appears to be diagonal streaks composed of 3 columns of pixels running across the screen. the strange thing is when i move windows around the screen vertical streaks appear instead and overwrite the diagonal ones.
i've tried reseting PRAM and it have failed to solve the problem.
i'm thinking this is a video card problem and i'm considering between upgrading to a new system or sending it for repairs.
would love to hear what the experts have to say about this.
    many thanks (:

It's probably time for someone more knowledgeable than I am to address this problem, as I have never encountered this exact issue. But I am wondering if it may be driver/software related somehow. If it were a hardware problem, it could be intermittent, but would be expected to occur regardless of which program you were running.
If the pixels were just stuck, they might respond to being touched or rubbed and go away. Clearly something else is going on.
It's always difficult to troubleshoot without being able to have your discs available to run the AHT or Disk Utility from a disc--or even to see if the problem persists even when booted from a disc. When you do get back to your original discs, it might be worth your while to make copies of them--you are allowed to make a safety copy. Then put the originals away in a nice safe place, and keep the copies with your Mac for troubleshooting. I travel a lot, and that is what I do. The originals stay in the fire proof safe at home, and the copies are in my bag in case I need them while on the road.
    Good luck!

  • When i open my computer I get the white screen with apple symbol and there are vertical lines all over the screen with green pixels and after a few minutes the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer what happens

3 years ago I bought an IMac Desktop that I am using for a lot of things but the most important for dvd montage in Imovies and Idvd.
Now today when I opened my computer I get as usual the white screen with the Apple symbol but there were all over the screen vertical lines with green pixels and after a while the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer using the power button or the restart button and when I do so each time the same is happening somebody can tell me what is happening and what caused this. This computer is my work and now I have no income anymore.
On the Apple support site they are asking to enter the serial number and when I do so I get message it is wrong but it is the only one I have and I buy this computer in Cairo Egypt. I am living in Hurghada in Egypt for the moment. When I call the technical support of the shop where I buy it they are telling me that it is the hard disk or ram and that I probably lost everything on it and they are asking a big amount to repair.
Can somebody advise me on this matter. Thanks in advance

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Blue or pink stripes appears all over the screen, can't do anything but restart with the button.

I was watching Netflix and all of a sudden, blue stripes appeared in my screen. Then my page seemed to "split" in two and then come back to normal and then there were pink stripes all over the screen and I couldn't see anything else but stripes. I had to restart with the button. It restart correctly, I have been able to watch Netflix again but only on Chrome because on safari it would happen again everytime. Then, iPhoto opened and here we are again, stripes and image "moving", can't help but wait... Then the screen became all white and nothing. I tried to restart it again with the button, but it didn't even made it to the apple interface, juste the sound and then white screen. What is going on, Please? I really need my computer for work this isn't fun!

After all this, you are at a white screen at startup and that is as far as it goes? What operating system are you using?http://www.macworld.com/article/2018853/when-good-macs-go-bad-steps-to-take-when -your-mac-wont- Also try this. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

  • Hi, my Macbook Pro just shut down for no reason. Before, there were black lines all over the screen. Then it shut down and it started to make beeps (3). What can I do?!

I was using my computer just as usual, I was on Microsoft Words and doing lectures on the Internet. Then, out of nowhere, the screen froze and black lines appeared all over the screen and the computer shut down. The screen was all black, but I think it was still open because my laptop was doing sounds, three beeps. When it beeps, the little light that shows you when your laptop is open is bright, so the beeps and the light are synchronized. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, help me!!!

There is a hardware problem. Possibly bad RAM. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • When typing, my letters go all over the screen, just happens with Firefox.

After installing Firefox, when I type, the letters go all over the screen, instead of where I try to type them. I used to type without looking at the screen. Now I have to watch... my cursor disappears, and the letters I'm typing go into something I've previously typed correctly.
== When I installed Firefox, and it happens constantly.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

  • Curser is jumping all over the screen by itself

my curser is jumping all over the screen by itself.  anyone else have this problem and if so how did you fix it?

    I have the same problem.
The curser jumps all over the place either when typing on the keyboard on my totally tricked out 2012 MacAir (i7 2.0GHz, 512GB), or on the bluetooth keygoard that I have on my keyboard tray nearby: does it on both, apparently totally at random and quite often.
It is realy annoying. I am trying to write a large book and this is really slowing me down.
Various solutions are here on the forum related to old batteries bulging the keyboard, but it even does it on the bluetooth keyboard and the thing is only a year old, so that can't be it.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • Pointer jumps all over the screen erratically on new MacPro Quad Core

I just powered up my new MacPro Quad Core Xeon for the first time today. For the monitor, my new Viewsonic VG2230. I noticed that my new mighty mouse was skipping all over the screen and it was hard to get the pointer on the place on the screen I wanted to click. It got much worse when I added the second monitor (Viewsonic VA1912), and didn't want to move across from one screen to another at first.
I thought maybe it was the mouse, and put on my old Razor Pro mouse, which I know and love. Same problems. I switch USB ports still the same.
According to Viewsonic, both monitors are compatible, and I have used the VA1912 successfully on my old PowerMac. I thought it was odd that the number of screens affected the problem, which is why I am concentrating on the monitors, but I wonder if it isn't a problem with my Mac.
    Any ideas?

    Hello g:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I suspect a faulty mouse. However, try two things first. Trash a preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restart. Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Second, after assuring Apple this really was a problem, i got the ultimate insult. "If you would like to lodge a technical support ticket, we will need your credit card. This call will cost you $150.00."
You see, I bought this thing four months ago. Apparently you only get a 90 day free call period. After that you're warranty is actually a cost per call scenario…..
There is no Apple charge for a warranty issue and the mouse has a one year warranty. Call Applecare back (or take it to a store if they have one close to you). Unless I am badly mistaken, Apple will replace the mouse and pay for shipping both ways (I had one fail a couple of years ago myself). Do identify the call as a warranty issue.

  • What else do I do when it freezes up and lines show up all over the screen?

I'll show you what I mean.
    (Was watching a music video)
Whenever I watch a video/tv show I can see the video clear at first, but after a couple of seconds my iPod freezes up and lines show up and spread all over the screen. I already reseted it. I did that a couple of times already. What else should I do?
I just bought my 30gb iPod Video on Monday. Should I return it? What happens if I do? Exchange it for a good one? What will it cost me?
I'm sorry if this topic has already been posted before,I'm new to this forum,so I don't really know.
I need help while it's still early.

  • Mouse is Jumping all over the screen...

I have been having all kinds of problems with my mouse. The one on my computer will at times not respond to touch... I thought I had fixed that by wiping it down but it still isnt great...
Then my mouse started having the cursor jumping all over the screen... I ended up going and buying a Magic Mouse as the guy at the store said my mouse was going bad... Well I have been great with the magic mouse for about 24 hours and now it is starting to do it again...
Any ideas of what I should do?

Buy a Logitech Bluetooth mouse!! I have had no problems with my Logitech...it seems like more people have problems with the mighty mouse and magic mouse. That is my opinion. I have this mouse:

  • All my puchased TV Shows Play with small green dots all over the screen!!

    Hi Everyone,
After installing the latest version on Itunes from System Update all my videos play covered with little green dots... Whats up with that??? Also I usually down load two epesodes of LOST before watching because one just isn't enough. Well aside from having little green dots all over the screen one of my Lost episode wont play at all... "Par Avion". It shows up in my Lost folder under TV SHows but it doesn't show up in my Purchased items. When I click on it it wont open either... However the lastest LOST, "The Man From Tallahassee" shows up and will play?? Itunes Store says I have all my down loads but I have not seen and can not open episode "Par Avion"..... Damm So this is a two part problem. Little green dots and the episode that wont open... HELP!@!!!

only way I found to fix it it is selecting each episode 1 at a time in order and syncing after each one.
    Season 1 episode 1
    sync
    Season 1 episode 2
    sync
    etc.
    what a pain
Edit. Actually seams to work if you select each individual episode in the order you want sync'd and then sync.
Syncing a whole season still results in a jumble

  • Red horizontal lines appearing all over the screen accompanied with beeping

Today I had the weirdest of issues on my Macbook Pro (early-2011 13 inch core i5 hd 3000), while using Chrome, suddenly red horizontal lines appeared all over the screen with beeping sounds coming from the computer. I had to hard reset my macbook to make them go away. BTW I am on ML 10.8.2 and this is the second time I have had an issue after installing the updates, Digital Camera RAW update 4.04 and Airport utilitly 6.02. I have also installed the SMC update that was released earlier this month. A couple of days ago my macbook got stuck while shutting down and I had to close it manually and today this happened. Please tell me that this is not a hardware related issue because my warranty has expired

I ran the extended test and thankfully "No trouble was found" . Should I now report this to Apple Support, maybe there is a problem with the updates I have installed?
Here is the result of that test (the image uploading thingy inverted this image):
