Graphics troubleshooting Macbook Air

To whomever can tell me what I need to do to fix the following problem I am having: My screen occasionally to almost constantly - turns gray (so that I can still barely see what is on the monitor) and a solid black line @ 2 inches in width or streaks of black appear along with this at the same time. I am unsure what to do, I have read a good bit on graphics display in Macbook Air 13-inch, Mid 2011, but I am unsure exactly how to fix my problem. Any help, advice, or guidance will be much appreciated!

  • Knowledge of Graphics and Macbook Air

What I need: 32 MB DirectX 9 compatible video card or better.
    The Air has:
Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory
    Is this enough?

    Ah,
    Right here goes !
1/paralles is only an emulator of windows ie all hardware is simulated so there is NO 3d support at all and the emulated video is very very basic there is no DirectX !
2/ bootcamp your mac 'becomes' a pc with full use of ALL mac hardware ie full support for DirectX
    hope this helps

  • Can I change my Macbook Air's Graphics card?

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Macbook Air's graphics card. When i open After Effects CC, it says that i need an approved NVIDIA Graphics. That in other means, should I change my Macbook Air's graphics card? Even some programs requires me an NVidia Graphics or ATI graphics to render the media. This annoys me a lot as i can't render the media out the software!
So, is there any possible way i can customise my Macbook Air's Graphics by changing it or some sort?
Service it? Pay it? Ask the iBox store? Dismantle it myself? Please help!!
    Product: Macbook Air (128 GB)
    Operating System: OSX Mavericks 10.9.4
Processor: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Graphics: Intel HD 5000                    -----------> Needs to be changed!!!
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Thanks afterwards!   =D

    Hi.
Macbook Airs only handle integrated graphics card, and there is no slot on the Motherboard to add one. If you want a discrete graphics card, to use with professional software, you need to go towards an iMac, Mac Pro or 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina. If you do not want to buy a new machine, you could get an older second hand Macbook Pro with a discrete graphics card.
The Macbook air isn't built to use this kind of software.

  • 2013 MacBook Air for graphic design?

I've been looking at the new 2013 13-inch MacBook Air for quite some time now. I'm a graphic designer, so I'll be looking to use Adobe CS6 (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat) and Aperture. Also of course, the general things such as Safari, Mail and iPhoto.
I have the new 27-inch iMac at home, which serves as my main machine. 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz, 32GB RAM (8GB at the moment - upgrading soon), 1TB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX with 1GB. I love it!
I absoloutely love the MacBook Air - it's a lovely design, so lightweight and the new 12 hour battery life is just epic!
    If I were to get the MacBook Air, I would definite upgrade to these specs;
    - 1.7GHz dual core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz (although I'm told the i7 will drain battery quicker, and isn't much faster?)
    - 8GB RAM
    - 128GB Flash Storage (or possibly 256GB - bare in mind, I have a 1TB external hard drive).
So I guess the big question is... Will the new 2013 13-inch MacBook Air, with these specs, be sufficient for my needs?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The problem of the MacBook Air is the GPU, and Adobe apps don't support the GPU of your MacBook officially because it's an integrated GPU.
Sincerely, if you want to use that type of applications, the only valid Mac is the 15-inch MacBook Pro. It includes a quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM (with the possibility to add up to 16 GB), a 500 GB HDD (with possibilities for bigger HDDs and SSDs) and a NVIDIA GPU which will work with your applications without any problem. Also, you can modify the RAM and hard drive without voiding the warranty.
If you want to give the MacBook Air a try, buy it and see if your applications work properly. You have 14 days to return it if it doesn't work as you expected, but to be sure, go for the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air is designed for home tasks

  • Graphic/ GPU Intensive Applications on Macbook Air?

    Hey all
Im planning to get a MacBook for my GCSE's, and im leaning towards the air.
I will be running applications such as Adobe Photoshop CS5, After Effects CS5, Lightroom CS5, and Final Cut Express regularly, so would a 13" 1.86ghz MBA C2D Processor with 4gb of RAM be able to run these apps fast and efficiently with no lag? Or should I opt for the baseline MBP 13"? Im also looking for portability, as im going to be taking it into school
    Thanks

The MacBook Air is an excellent notebook. I would recommend the maximum configuration that you can afford.
I have a 13 inch 2.13 GHz C2D, 4 GB RAM with 256 GB SSD and I can verify there is little difference in performance between it and and and i7 based MacBook Pro (with conventional hard drive). xBench score MBA this config = 183, base model = 120 and i7 MacBook Pro 172 (Processor and RAM based tests such as GeekBench are not particularly relevant when the major bottleneck for many applications is disk access time)
The relative difference in real world use between the i7 based Pro and 2.13 GHz MBA is around 15 % based on combined testing across a range of software and processes.
The combination of graphics card, SSD and processor is as important as the processor alone and overall makes a significant difference.
For an informed opinion I would suggest you read the review at Macworld and look at their comparison benchmarks.
Good luck with your decision, I am more than happy with mine

  • New Macbook Air - graphics problem

New mid 2011 Macbook Air with Intel HD300 graphics card
Seems to be a problem with brushes in photo editing software. Brushes don't render correctly on screen at certain sizes.
Problems experienced in Aperture, Photoshop and Lightroom.
No problems at all with this software on my 2009 MBA or MBP runnining Lion10.7.1
Problem is just on this new Macbook Air
Any advice or solution much appreciated

Problem still there is 10.7.2. No work around. It makes using Photoshop on a MB Air very difficult. On the Photoshop.com forum (Adobe), they are blaming Apple the the graphics drivers, and disavowing any resposibility.

  • The sign-in graphic changed on my macbook air for no apparent reason.  what's up?

The sign-in graphic changed on my macbook air for no apparent reason.  What's up?  How do I get it back to my chosen graphic and why did this happen?

When I originally set up the computer, I just chose a preloaded picture that was offered.  (For example, I chose the sunflower, but now I get an eagle--but never chose the latter).  It's not really a big deal, I was just worried that somehow my computer might have been tampered with.  The OS update may be why it changed.
How do I change it back--if you wouldn't mind taking the time to explain something that is probably very simple to a not too computer-savvy user.  Thanks!

  • Which is better graphic for iMac 2007 or MacBook Air 2012

iMac use ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB and MacBook Air use intel graphic 5000m so which is better?

Without knowing how you intend to use the computer it's impossible to say, also you are comparing apples and oranges.

  • Should I get a high end macbook air or a macbook pro for digital graphics?

I wanna get into some 2d graphics. Drawing professionally with a tablet and such. Looking into 2D animation really. Maybe a little 3D. would a i7, 8gb ram 13 inch macbook air suit my needs? or should I get a pro for this? i really like the light design of the air and think it's a good enough size but the real issue is preformance. I guess it doesn't have to be such a powerhouse cause im planning to get a high powered desktop/imac anyways? I just wanna know which would give me the best results for on the go rendering.

The advantage of a desk top is that it is NOT portable, like the mobile devices. I do 75%/25% business/pleasure on my iMac 27" and it is as secure as possible in its location at my house. Because all these systems are so multi-function these days - Internet, photography, music, writing, and of course business - the temptation is always to have one around wherever you are.
For instance, I take my iPad abroad, or simply out for the day in case I get somewhere and find WiFi and want to use that.  If I only had a MacBook, I would take that out, and risk losing critical business data and images.
Sure, I have Time Machine backups, but for me, the trouble and cost of claiming for hardware and software [if I could prove I wasn't simply careless], and then messing about to get back to square one makes having a stable system at home very desirable.
Then I can take subsets of what I want out on the lesser hardware and not worry.
So it depends if you are playing or working, and of what nature the work is.

  • Macbook air graphics flicker

    Hi
    I have a brand new Macbook Air 13" i7.  OSX 10.8.4
Graphics in finder windows sometimes flickers.  Someimes this occurs in Safari also.  Particularly when discplaying a PDF.
    Anyone have a soluion?
    Thanks,
    Stee

Just the document in the safari window and the scrolling icons above the directory listing in a finder window.
I just found another Mountain Lion update and installed it and restarted.
The problem has mostly gone away.  Scrolling through a pdf in safari is still not completely smooth, but the finder problem is completely fixed.
Thank you for your rapid response.

  • Help! MacBook Air Nvidia Graphics 256 uninstall failure to boot up! Help Please!

Hello, I have a 2011 MacBook air with an Nvidia Graphics Geforce of some sortI was trying to install fallout 1 on the computer, but it said I need to uninstall the Nvidia 256 graphics updatethe thing did not turn on. Status bar on, then says panic on the screen along with the word kernel and a bunch of numbers. Then it says to restart computer everytime I turn it on. It says things like "panic", ( 4 potential arts on stack), kernel version: Darwin kernel version 10.8.0, and debugger called Panic. Is there any possible way to turn it back on? Tried plugging in the reinstall drive and holding down D, nothing, holding down C with reinstall drive, nothing. I need to know how to boot it back up without reinstalling  Mac OS! Thanks!

  • Safari on MacBook Air showing graphics in 16-bit colour

    Hi all,
On my MacBook Air system, graphics that appear in Safari show up as this (here's a small sample):
In particular, look at the mirroring under the image... it's streaky, indicative of 32-bit-to-16-bit colour conversion.
Is there a setting on Safari that can force it to display graphics in 32-bit colour?  The MacBook Air's Display settings don't offer anything with regards to setting a display depth:
Any technical details about this issue would be most welcome!  It's not a problem for me, but it is noticable in some Web pages.
Incidentally, Firefox 8 also does this too, but running apps like OmniGraffle Pro:
    shows good colour graphics (32-bit).
Is this something that the graphics controller is doing?!  For Safari and Firefox to use different rendering engines and produce the same results in rendering images with 16-bit graphics is rather perplexing!
Or... is this Lion's doing?!  I am running Safari 5.1.2 and Firefox 8.0.1 on Lion 10.7.2.
    Cheers!

I finally found what was going on with my MacBook Air... turns out it has nothing to do with the machine at all.  Instead it was because I was using a 3G connection in order to get to the Internet.
My mobile phone provider was using a proxy server which reduced the size of images by re-rendering them on the fly in order to reduce bandwidth on the 3G network!  So all those graphics artifacts were caused by my mobile phone provider!
If my MacBook Air uses another Internet connection (like WiFi) on another provider, the problem disappears!

  • Macbook Air 13inch for Graphic / Web Design ?

Hi guys, I decided to come here to ask for some expert help if i should buy the macbook air or pro. But before that, let me tell you what I usually do.
I use Adobe Fireworks as my primary design tool for web graphics / screen graphics, maybe use Photoshop / Illustrator for "brochure" or packaging projects in the future.
I like the fact that the 13inch air has a 1400 x 900 resolution, which is close to the resolution of my new monitor, around 1600 x 900 ( upgraded from an old aoc monitor that only displays 1024 x 768 )
I also like to surf a lot of videos, youtube etc, I dont play games that much since I already have an xbox for that. I don't do 3d or heavy video editing
In my old pc when I open like 10 browser windows, it slows down , and having a hard time when editing a project with 300 dpi on lets say a 20 x 20 inch canvas. My old pc still runs but a few times in a year, I get it repaired or I replace the memory ram or something.
This is my current computer setup which I bought last 2006 >
    Windows XP SP 2
    Pentium 4 2.66 ghz
    1.5GHZ DDR SDR1 ram
    nvidia geforce fx 5500 256mb
    40gb harddisk
    Based on what Ive mentioned.
1.) Comparing my old 2006 pc to the air, will it give me x 2 or x 3 speed on the things that I need ?
2.) Air doesn't have a LAN port, i connect my pc through LAN, but if I use wifi, will my net speed be slower ?
3.) There are rumors that there will be an air update this summer, to include the sandy bridge processors, should I wait for this ?
Thanks , hoping to hear your thoughts.

PC vs MBAir would be like comparing apples to windo.. err orange.
But regardless, there will be a very noticeable difference in speed when you upgrade your Pentium 4 to the MBA.
To put it in perspective, my MBAir 2010 seems to run faster than my Lenovo T410s core I5 CPU and both have SSDs and both have 4GB ram. Both models came out last year.
Wifi is usually slower than LAN. But I dont see any noticeable difference in speed using LAN vs wifi unless you transfer large files within your network. Your internet connection will usually be the bottleneck (when uploading/downloading files off of the internet) and is usually slower than your wifi (wireless G around 50ish Mbps vs 3Mbps DSL - with upload speeds being much slower).
I'd say if you need the upgrade, get it. If you'd rather wait, that's fine too - You'd just be stuck with your old equipment for several months waiting for the new model. (Or... you can wait until the new model is out, and buy the old model for MUCH cheaper price :D)
