Graphics2D assumes 72 dpi resolution

hi all,
I have a problem. While The aToolKit.getScreenResolution( ) shows the default resolution, the Graphics2D apparently assumes 72 dpi resolution.
This is especially awful in respect to "native" applications, where fonts et all look totally different.
Is there a trick to set the Resolution of the Graphics Device ?
thank you
Jakob

Not that this might be of much solace, but compatibility of assumptions is important - and it seems that Microsoft products also assume that 96 dpi pixel resolution (no matter what you change the screen resolution to).
This is actually what I expect and desire. When I change the pixel resolution around on my screen, I don't want the dimensions of anything to be changed. My desire is that it be like I'm changing the magnifying power on a telescope.

  • How do I adjust Tiff. dpi resolution?

Hi, does anyone know how I can set a specific dpi resolution of my tiff file. I have opened it as a pdf in preview and can convert it to a tiff, but I don't know what resolution it is. I have to send someone a 300 dpi tiff file and don't even know how many dpi the application "preview" converts it to.
Also, is there a way to save a multiple page tiff? Thanks so much -Lee

Use any image editing tool such as Photoshop Elements or Graphic Converter.

At what image size? The dpi/ppi is meaningless unless you relate it to an image size. 180 dpi at 12X9 is the same as 360 at 6X4.5 and both are about 3.9MP.

  • DPI resolution from Nikon Camera?

i'm shooting raw files and then exporting from Aperture. When I choose the jpeg format, with actual size selected, why do the Jpegs come out at only 72dpi?
These will be used both on the web, but some will go to print. Can I increase the DPI settings? How (in camera).
Is Tiff necessary? Those are some really large files.

Short answer: the dpi is set when you decide what size you're printing at.
Long Answer: Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing. Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.

  • Timelapse frame DPI resolution. Clips are jerky.

    Hello.
I am producing 10 second (ish) long timelpase clips. I import 300 odd 1920x1080 still images.
Project is set to 30fps (or 25, depending). Set to 1 frame for still images.
I am producing the still images on a DSLR, and resizing them in Canon Photo professional. I have the option of a DPI for each individual still.
Does anyone know what DPI is required for viewing crisp images on a HDTV? The default is 350. i have raised this to 1200 as 350 seems low.
The resulting clips have a slight jerky feel to them, the motion is not smooth. I am wondering if this is due to the DPI setting.
The finished clips size is roughly 50MB.
i am saving the clips in PE as AVCHD/MP4-H268 1920x1080p 25
    Thanks for any assistance.
EDIT, here is an example https://vimeo.com/84488936
EDIT02. Also in Canon Photo Professional i have the option to tick "embed ICC profile". What does this mean?

    cappedup
Thanks for the update. Sorry the news is not better.
This 25 frames per second that seems like half that...am I correct that this is for the playback of the
MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p25 export of the Timeline, not what you are seeing in the Edit Mode monitor when you are viewing playback of the rendered Timeline before export?
Do you see this slightly jerky video motion to which you refer in the Time Lapse before and after export?
What is the actual duration of your export of 300 jpg each with a duration of 1 frame?
I do not recall that I asked or your said, is this playback matter restricted to this particular batch of 300 jpg images or do you run into this problem with all your Time Lapse video projects?
I have gotten excellent results for Time Lapse video Premiere Elements projects so I am reluctant to characterize the experience as
Old school animation VS new age tech. Rhubarb and Custard Vs Toy Story!
And, if there were a glitch in the process, I would not dismiss anything as irrelevent, as I systematically  ruled in or out possible causes for the glitch.
We could get into how the photos were introduced to the Timeline, possibities for slivers which at the Timeline level of 1 frame would be hard to detect if you had set for 1 frame per second in the preferences beforehand, and so on.
We will be watching for further developments when you have time.
Thank you for the follow ups.

  • What is the recommended image resolution (dpi) for best result in a A0 (plotter) printing?

Is the 300 dpi resolution good enough (images>24bit>1680X1050 pixels) for best printing result in A0 (plotter)?

It sounds almost a trick question.  'How can I use a pen plotter with bit map images?' sort of thing.  Plotters are designed for vector artwork, and more suitable for use with Autocad than Photoshop.  However there are apparently workarounds, but the question might be more like 'how to convert bit map image for pen plotter?' rather than what resolution you need.
Is there a particular end use for this graphic that requires a plotter?  Like laser etch, wood cutter etc. or is it just that the pen plotter can manage A0?

  • True Resolution for Image

Hi, as I search the internet for a particular popular image, when it pops up in Google image search, it shows up with a bunch of different resolutions / sizes / whatever you call it. I assume that when the image was originally created, it had one resolution it was created it, the one where it's the best quality. Is there a way in photoshop to figure this out? ie what is the optimal resolution that an image should be displayed at?
For instance, I'm doing an image search on "success kid" which is a popular meme. Of all the images that pop up, should I take the one with the highest resolution? But however could that have meant that it was resized to be very big?
Just a little confused about resolution in general.

    charles badland wrote:
Well, you have the right to define words in any way you wish.
No, I don't. (see above Merriam Webster definition)
Resolution describes the detail an image holds. In MLTHO that concept is more accurately described by number of pixels, not size of pixels. The only thing image  PPI indicates is how big pixels will print IF OR WHEN an image is ever printed. Period.
Image PPI describes printed pixel SIZE.
when people talk about "high res" or "low res" images...  99% of the time they are talking about pixel dimension (i.e., total number of pixels)
As you well point out, the Photoshop Image Size dialog contributes to this confusion.
There is more to it then number of pixels. You can have billions of pixels if the lens use was not in focus you have no details you have a blur.  PPI is pixel size while different size UXGA displays all display 1600x1200 pixels each display size has a single PPI resolution.  My 20" UXGA  PPI resolution is 100PPI my  15" UXGA PPI resolution is 133PPI the same 1600x1200 image displayed on both is sharper and smaller on the 15" display then on the 20" display. 12"x9" on the 15" display 16"x12" on the 20" display.  Printers can print different size pixels they are not confined to a single pixel size like displays so my Epson 4800 could print both the 12"x9" 133DPI image and the 16"x12" 100ppi image.  PPI is pixel density it applies to displays sensors any device the displays or captures pixels. Resolution is also measured in resolving power how well a lens can focus a point or something like that.  Displaying an image at different sizes on a display is done by scaling the number of pixels used to display the image with the display's single pixel size.
Photoshop Image Size Dialog supports two types of resizing controlled by the RESAMPLE check box.
With RESAMPLE Un-check you will see that the dialog top area is grayed out and can not be changed.  The number of Pixels can not be changed and the Images Aspect Ratio can cot be changed. You will see that the Width, Height and Resolution are linked together in the middle print size area all you need do is to change one of these and Photoshop will calculate the other two.  When RESAMPLE is un-checked the other controls in the bottom section are not relevant.
With RESAMPLE CHECKED the current Document Image will be replaced with a new generated image not a single pixel will remain intact.  The number of pixel in the new imaged depend on the other setting used. The bottom section setting controls the resize operation. Interpolation how the new pixels are generated. Constrain when checked links the Documents Width and Height the Documents Aspect Ratio will not change and the image will not be distorted into a new aspect ratio. Scale Styles may or may not be grayed out. Layer Styles have absolute pixels settings not relative settings if you change the number of Pixels in an image layer style may look quite different if you do not have Photoshop scale the styles setting during an Image Size resize.  With RESAMPLE CHECK it best to also check Constrain to prevent distortion.  If you resizing for the web set the width or height in the top section that you want. Resizing for print first with RESAMPLE UN_CHECKED set the print width or height that you want. If the resolution falls below the resolution you need for printing CHECK RESAMPLE and set in the RESOLUTION you want the image printed at and set the interpolation method you wan used.
Printing:  Your Printer resolution setting is a print quality setting. As long as you image DPI resolution is lower then the Printer's resolution setting all is fine.  Printers use their higher resolution capabilities to paint in you image larger pixels. It like paint by the numbers fill an image pixel with drops of different color inks to produce the correctly colored pixel. There is no one to one correlation.

  • DPI in Motion?

How do i change the DPI in Motion? I want to use motion for making a still image but because motion is for video primarily, i'm assuming the dpi is 72. I need a still image for print but i don't know how to change the dpi or even if you can. I'm a little fuzzy on the details about how resolution and dpi differ. Could i just make the resolution about 4 times what the printed size will be and then scale it down for print? Thanks for the help.
    -Tyler

    hi,
you are right video does not deal with dpi. Motion has no concept of it. As you suggest make the motion project as big as you can, or at least as big as your graphics card will allow.

  • Office 7500A E910 prints high resolution document in 1/4 size

I am trying to print a 25 Mb A4-size document full of pictures in a 300 dpi resolution from Adobe photoshop (PC-version)  to my newly aquired Officejet 7500A Wide format networked printer. The documents prints to another printer (HP 2800 laserjet) without any problems. With the 7500A, it prints successfully when I print with the below normal quality selected in the paper/quality print choice, but when I choose normal or best quality, the document is scaled down to the upper quarter corner of the A4 paper I print to.
I have tried to print to high quality hp papers (eg. the HP premium plus paper) without any difference shown. I am using color printing. The original I am printing from is black/white-pictures, however, but I assume this is not the reason?
If I print from Photoshop to a high quality pdf-file, then print that at 600 dpi to my officejet 7500A, the file prints ok. The resulting pdf file is 4,5 Mb, can file size be the issue?
Since I bought this printer to print high resolution photographs in a large format, I really hope someone can help me...

    Gimp

You can't just resize an image using Preview.
Resizing an image will change its dimensions, but not the DPI/resolution.
Images on the Internet are usually at computer screen resolution of 72 DPI. Some images in the web might be at 150 DPI depending on the type of website it is.
Just resizing an image will make the image worst as you are only making the available pixels in the image larger and more spread out causing an even blurrier image.
You need an image editor that will increase the number of pixels in an image as you increase the size.
This is called interpolation. You are adding artificial pixels to an image to boost its DPI resolution.
These pixels are created from the surrounding existing pixels in an image.
Done correctly, you can get a pretty sharp image from a low DPI image.
Done incorrectly, you can make the image very ugly, blurry and look very out of focus.
You minimize this effect by  increasing the DPI of an image in small increments. I use 50 DPI increments.
Some users use even smaller DPI increments like 25 DPI or smaller.
I have a certain amount of impatience, so I use a larger upscale amount. I still get pretty good results that are more than just acceptable. Some user are just more particular about how much detail and sharpness they want their final image to be. I feel increasing the resolution of an image to 300-350 DPI using 50 DPI increments is a good compromise. My own user preference.

  • Is there a way to set a preference for image resolution in PSE10?

Once I transfer image files from the camera to the Organizer (PSE10), they are listed in the information panel window as having a resolution of 180.  I use the printer  more than the internet for these files, so I really want the resolution to be 300 or above, and would like to set a preference to that effect.  I know that I can resize them individually, or by a group, but I'd like to get the resolution set properly in the first place rather than adding yet antoher setp in my post processing efforts.  I am assuming that the resolution is set by PSE10 because I can't find anywhere in the camera's (Canon Powershot SX40 HS) user manual that mentions that the camera sets a resolution.  Is there some way that I can adjust the resolution that PSE10 assigns the images when they are imported into the Organizer?  I'm using Windows 7 with 12GB Ram.  Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for the info.  I certainly appreciate it.  I’ve been looking everywhere I could think of for how the resolution gets to be 180, and couldn’t find it.  I wish they’d have something in their manual about that.  Your info helps tremendously.  Thanks again..

  • Auto flagging of low resolution links

    Hello again
In a large document with many links, is there an indesign trick to detect or flag all the image blocks which are below a specific effective dpi (not actual dpi) resolution? That would be great as a reminder for the pages which are not proper for printing. It easily shows in the links Panel but it does not show as an alarm on the actual spreads, while it should, to prevent from going to press with faulty spreads.
    Thanks,

Oof! Your remark "easily shows in the links Panel" didn't prompt me to recognize CS4 (it's early morning over 'ere).
Yeah, live Preflight has saved my life a couple of times. I created a few custom preflights: one for pure text, one for grayscale work, and one for full colour work, and use whatever is appropriate for the current job. If you tinker a bit with the settings, you don't get irrelevant (for you) warnings, and it's time spent well to get it right -- now I'm tuned to seeing the happy green light at the bottom of the window.
