Graphite Airport keeps resetting

Hi All, recently my 6 year old graphite base station (V3.84) has been starting to act up. It has been restarting itself on a random basis and it now restarts/resets during large downloads such as podcasts or when downloading a video from pbs.org. But it also restarts just randomly even if network activity is low.
When I look at it using the AirPort Admin Utility, it indicates that it recently restarted.
Is this just aging hardware needing replacement or can this behavior be fixed by some other means?
PowerBook G4 1.5GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sounds like it may be suffering from old age.
The capacitors in power supply circuits ware out over time causing the power to be unstable. This often shows itself when the equipment is working hard. I would suggest either get the base station serviced or get an extreme/express to replace it.

• Help needed--Graphite airport not accessing Internet.

My daughter is trying to get our old graphite airport to be the wireless router for her network. When the airport is plugged into the cable modem, her ibook (10.3.9) can 'see' the airport (the icon is black with full strength signal) but she can't get on the Internet. (When her computer is connected directly to the modem via ethernet she has no trouble getting online.) She's tried a soft reset--she was able to change her password and remove the encryption but that didn't help. When she tries using the set-up assistant, the computer can see the airport network but on the next screen her base station doesn't appear in the list even with rescanning, though her airport icon is black with full strength so we know the computer can see the airport. She has unplugged the airport and turned it back on--still nothing. Safari simply loads and loads forever without any page appearing.
What else should she try? Would a factory reset help? The article at Apple support says for a hard reset the airport must be connected to the computer via a crossover ethernet cable, but that must mean that the airport is not connected to the internet during the process--correct?)
Thanks for any help you can give us.

Use AirPort Admin Utility to administer the Graphite.
I don't think another reset is what you need. Since the computer is able to join the Graphite's wireless network (hence the black icon), all it needs for Internet access is a working IP address. The default settings for the Graphite after a reset are for the Graphite to receive an IP address using Ethernet and DHCP (see the Internet tab of AirPort Admin Utility) and to distribute IP addresses using DHCP and NAT (see the Network tab of AirPort Admin Utility). These settings are what you want.
I think the problem is probably that the cable modem is remembering the computer's MAC address and is not giving an IP address to the Graphite. With the computer shut down and the Graphite's power unplugged, reset the modem with its reset button if it has one. Otherwise, unplug the modem's power for at least 5 minutes. Then turn on the modem, the Graphite and the computer (in that order), waiting a few minutes between them.

You could be suffering from RF interference from other devices operating at 2.4 GHz. Try changing the channel used by the base station until you find a channel that works better or you run out of channels.

• 366SEclamshell and graphite airport base,will these work w/airport in os10?

Just installed original airport card in a graphite 366se clamshell which is recognized by os10 and 0s9. Hooked up an original graphite airport base station which is not recognized in airport setup assistant. Base powers up and am using new cat5 cable. Do i need to set up with older version of mac os? Would appreciate any help! Thanks

What setup are you using for TCP/IP for the Airport interface on the clam (as in the Network system preference.) Are you using manual setup or using dhcp? If you are using dhcp what ip address is being assigned?
Do you know what the ip address of the graphite is? Could be that your clam and the graphite are on different subnets (ip address-wise) and so the Airport Setup Assistant and Admin Utility might not see it.
The usual default ip address for an Airport is 10.0.1.1 so what you could do is assign your clam an ip address of something like 10.0.1.225 (mask 255.255.255.0, router 10.0.1.1) and see whether you can see it then. Another possibility is to use the Admin Utility, select "Other" and then enter what you think might be the address of teh graphite (try 10.0.1.1) and see if it sees it.
Could be helpful to do a reset of the graphite so that it is set back to known settings. Can't remember directly how to do that but it shouldn't be too hard to find the details under Apple Support.

I have a 3gs and dont want to get a new iphone. Also the iphones sim card wont work and I have tried to do a hard reset mutiple times.

Sounds like your phone was jailbroken. If it was, you will need to get another phone. That phone is permanently disabled.

• User Settings keep resetting

I have an I-Mac. I keep using the get Info to set my preferance for opening photos and other items. I find that the computer keeps resetting them to the default settings. For example I want my .jpeg files to open with Adobe Photoshop but they keep resetting to preview. I want certain items to open in Firefox but it keeps resetting to Safari. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You are doing nothing wrong. It sounds like LaunchServices is confused.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
Code:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

• Ipod will not charge, keeps resetting, extremely low battery.

Someone please help!!
I adore my Ipod, its 2+, it was working fine, till a few months ago.
In the beginning, it stopped charging on the computer, it synced, but i would have to charge in on a Ipod radio thing first.
Then after awhile, on the radio, (it worked perfectly at first) the ipod would come up with the message, "This accessory not supported by Ipod", it would still play on it, movies, songs, and charge it, but the message would come up every often.
Now it refused to be recognized by the radio, and won't charge.
(yet if you press play the song and movies will play)
It had very little battery left so i bought a wall charger.
I tried charging with a wall charger and car charger!
Now its basically dead, and when i plug it on to the wall charger, the apple logo comes on, and it goes to low battery message, then apple logo..again again.
It just keeps resetting, so i took it off that.
Leaving on the charger for awhile won't work, because it just keeps doing that.
What do i do?
I can't restore it, because i'd have to charge it first!
(I got a new battery for it a few weeks ago, the battery life was way better, charged a bit faster, and it seemed to work better, but the computer still drained it)
Anybody have any ideas?
Please please please.
I swear i love it, but i'm going to throw it out the window soon.
-edit,
just to add, the first thing that went wrong, that started this thing, was when i got that -48 error, it doesn't do that anymore just to add

I have the same problem and sent my ipod to a the service center for a battery replacement. I was informed by them first by email that "Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPOD 5TH GENERATION and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality." then I was told over the phone that they reloaded the software and firmware and that it is working properly and is being sent back to me. Then, and heres the kicker, I received my i pod back with a form stating it was a hardware failure affecting another component. I have since called multiple times and no one can tell me where the hardware failure is but the ipod still says its a battery issue. Go figure i think apple knows exactly what the faulty part is that is causing this error and has no solution short of replacing the unit and they dont want to replace the units of all those with this hardware failure

• X-fi extrememusic keeps resetting to 2/2.1 speakers on a restart after vista upgr

I checked the knowledgebase and it said to make sure x-fi is default device and disable other devices, which I have done, but everytime I reboot the settings in audio console keep resetting to 2/2. speaker configuration when I used 5.. If I manually set it, it works until a restart. Using driver package Any ideas?

If you actually performed an upgrade installation of vista from xp i can almost guarantee you nothing will work perfectly as it should. Upgrade installations never work perfectly and tend to lag quickly , i recommend that you perform clean install of vista if you plan on using it for a while. You probably didn't want to hear that but unfortunately thats the way windows has always been.
goodluck

• Linksys WRT54GC keeps resetting

Out of sudden my Linksys wireless router started to reset a few times a day. This results in all customisations being lost and having default SSID without encryption.
I successfully upgraded the firmware to the latest version 2 build but not change. In the limited logs of the router I don't see anything strange.
There is no problem with router's functionality, it's just that it keeps resetting and then I have to reconfigure all the previous settings. Importing them is not a long term solution.
From time to time the Power LED light is orange (this could result in reboots). I have no idea why this problem occurs.
The user guide says nothing about the orange light ot the power LED. Could be some hardware problem but it is something not persistent.
Any hints are appreciated.

Make sure the power adapter is properly connected to the router and to the power outlet. Make sure also it is the correct power adapter for the router. The output of the power adapter should be 3.3 V DC, 2.0 A. If the power adapter is correct, then it could be a possible hardware issue. Make sure the firmware has the version 1.06.1. If it is the latest firmware installed, do a firmware re-flash. It means, you still need to do an upgrade using the same firmware version. After that, do a reset and powercycle the router. After the upgrade process, reconfigure the router.

• Serious iPod problem (iPod keeps resetting)

I've had my iPod for almost 2 years and until now everything worked fine. i listen to it on average 1 hr each day, and until 2 days ago battery seemed fine (I would recharge it each week, though it would be only half empty).
So 2 days ago I was listening to music, tried to go forward and all of a sudden it stopped playing music, it was just frozen. I reset it and it came back with a "sad" iPod icon. Ocassionaly it would end up with the icon as if the battery is dead. I reset it a few more times and mostlt I got the same "sad" icon and only a few times the battery icon.
I than tried to hook it up to my computer via USB and it would just reset and PC/iTunes would not see it.
Since I've had it for 2 years I thought maybe the battery has gone bad (but does it happen just like that without any signs?) so I tried to charge itbut when I connect it to charger it keeps resetting.
I than tried to force it into disc mode and that worked but as soon as I connected it to my computer it would reset. Even when I tried to charge it in disc mode it would reset after a few secunds.
So, if left alone it is in off mode, but if I push any button it starts up, and eventually shows the sad iPod icon. If plugged into the charger or PC it keeps resetting.
I have no way to get into it and update the iTunes, or access iPod. Has anyone seen this? Does is sound like a battery or is it something worse? I am out of warranty and would not want to spend too much money fixing it since it probably does not worth much, though i wish I could save my iTunes collection...

Hey guys, I'm having a similar problem though a slight variation on a theme. maybe you can help me out.
I have a 4th generation iPod (20 Gig) and it told me my ipod battery had died, so i plugged it into my computer to charge. It started out showing me the large symbol of the battery with the lightening bolt until there was enough to power the iPod so that it could run with iTunes. Except once it finally had enough power and interacted with iTunes it went into a black and white mode instead of the normal color mode and the the battery icon up in the top right corner was black with the lightening bolt. I got the normal "do not disconnect" message except that was black and grey as well.
I figured i'd update my ipod as it was still charging and added a new playlist and it appeared to take the music, but when I unplugged the ipod it showed me the icon of the folder with the exclamation point and gave me the address http://www.apple.com/support/ipod. Since i didn't have time then i reset it and then plugged it in via a car charger to see if charging it would fix the problem. Unfortunately, when I unplugged it from the computer to take to the car and reset it, it started rebooting over and over. I was able to force it into disc mode so that it would continue to charge without wasting so much battery rebooting (it didn't reboot in disc mode) and continued to work on it when i got home.
At home i tried every fix they have listed on the site and in my ipod handbook and nothing has worked. I have reset, restored twice, and charged the battery. The weird thing is that it
1) is recognized by itunes
2) just turns off if i try to use the charger
3) appears to be able to download music to it but makes a clicking noise
4) since it doesn't recognize the charger I can't finish the restore process
5) still gives me the folder icon when it tries to turn on
PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!
If you can think of anything i can do to fix this I will be so appreciative.
Thanks guys!

The password for wireless network was changed. Airport keeps trying to sign in automatically with old password and won't let me put in new password. Any ideas?

You really should change both the wireless network name and password to avoid potential conflicts with the old and new settings.
Suggest you give that a try.

• Hooking up old Graphite Airport to wired router.

I had my old Graphite Aiport hooked up to a D-Link wired router which I also used for my iMac and Dell. The Airport was working like a charm until last week when the my D-Link wired router went kaput. I went out and bought a new D-link wired router (ERB-2310) and couldn't get it to connect to the internet through the router like it was before. I remember when I hooked up my Graphite Airport to the router last time that there was some sort of trick to it. Can anyone help me?

Laura,
the broadband router must be configured to dynamically assign IP addresses within a certain range.
When I got my Netgear, I had to log on to the router and configure the machine to dynamically assign the addresses from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.5 to connect our four machines.
If this parameter is not configured correctly and the router has a range of let's say 1 address available, it will not allow you to connect more than 1 machine.
The example would be:
192.168.0.1 (Router address)
192.168.0.2 (CPU)
You need to alter the number of addresses used by the router, as follows:
From 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.4
192.168.0.1 (Router address)
192.168.0.2 (CPU 1)
192.168.0.3 (CPU 2)
192.168.0.4 (CPU 3)
Hope this helps.
cheers
