Gratuitous advice from a hurting user:

Hi all -- if you're here, you've likely been poking around through various pieces of advice and tips. I want to add, explicitly, the following:
***NEVER, EVER format a hard drive without FIRST UNPLUGGING EVERY SINGLE OTHER DEVICE you are not using at the time.****
This should be a hard-fast rule like 'never cut fabric at night', and 'measure twice so as to cut once', etc....
I read comments to this effect about 'being sure to format the right disk', before doing so and I sniggered inwardly about how 'duh: I would never make such a stupid mistake'... But I now have. In the interests of squeezing a teensy bit of OJ from the mess, I would like to share here the fruits of my sadly-learned hard knocks. It hadn't really occurred to me to take that extra precaution before formatting a disk -- to unplug *everything else* -- but I sure will now and forever more. It is so easy, with one little click, to destroy years and years worth of data ... it's worth the extra precaution and the little extra time it takes to organize and unmount, in deference to it. I have spent well over 1,000 hours by now trying to recover jpgs from a huge disk I accidentally reformatted. {Let me send a HUGE shout of appreciation to and high recommendation for Cristophe Grenier and his PhotoRec freeware: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec . Wow is that good stuff}.
So anyway, please everyone, take this rule to heart: unplug *every single other disk* from your computer before formatting another, just to be positive you won't accidentally overwrite your heart's work.

A thought on backups - I do several
I run Time Machine which protects me from software and human failures by letting me simply go back to a good time.
I also have an off site TM backup that I update occasionally in case of a real disaster
I do a daily clone which protects me from hardware failure and lets me simply boot to a different drive if my primary drive is messed up or dead - instant recovery for that -- but this does not do well for software problems that occur over time or may not be seen for a while - TM is for that
And before major upgrades (like iPhoto '11 for example) I make another copy of the data for that application just before upgrading

  • Learning Shake. Video tutorial advice from a new user...

I am brand new to Shake and compositing. I've used Final Cut Pro for a few years and done simple compositing after doing FCP tutorials. Shake is tougher to learn thank FCP, so I've purchased some videos from Gnomon workshop and cmiVFX. I wouldn't consider this a formal review, but some beginning advice for newbies like me...
    1. First, do the tutorials in the manual that come with Shake. They start off simple, and one could probably learn almost everything you need for general use of Shake (from a newbie, don't forget).
    2. This excellent book... Apple Pro Training Series : Shake 4 (2nd Edition) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321256093/103-0705051-1275827?colid=1T8L28XGM0 5IS&coliid=I3MUD718LP9EP9&n=283155) will get you started as well. It comes with a DVD full of material to work with as well. Good money invested here.
When you're ready to start spending more money....
    3. cmiVFX.com has a number of free tutorials http://www.cmivfx.com/tutorials.asp, some of them for Shake, some for other compositing programs. Check them out for inspiration and for technique examples. I purchased the Shake Training Series 1 Kit (http://www.cmivfx.com/productshakekit.asp) which was quite good. They lead you through a series of examples, showing how some of the major functions operate and how to start working with all those nodes. I had previously purchased Combustion 4, and cmiVFX's video for Sky Replacement for combustion was excellent. They also make one for Shake, and I wish I would have purchase that one instead, although I've never seen it. The downside on this video series is that it runs as a regular DVD, and you need DVD Player, or a typical DVD player to view them. So, these are low-res videos (TV resolution), and not Quicktime files on disc.
    4. The Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/index.html) has some excellent video tutorials. They're pretty technical, and not a good place to start unless you've got a background in visual effects or other compositing software. I think they're great, but I think the new user of Shake/compositing software should work on numbers 1-3 above. Don't get me wrong, this is a great resource, which would be in keeping with the image Gnomon Workshop gives of being an in-depth resource for serious computer graphics artists. I suspect the level of teaching in these videos would satisfy the higher level and more advanced users. These videos are Quicktime format, high resolution and very well done. Visual Effects Compositing Fundamentals (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/gja01.html) is US$49 for 4 hours of instruction. Great value for money. I've also found Shake: Color Correction and Layers US$59 (3 hours) (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mli02.html) very good, as was Shake: Effective Keying Techniques US$59 (3 hours) (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mli03.html).
Personally, I'd like to see some more video tutorials of some experienced users showing how they get things done. Maybe now's the time???

I asked a couple of the Shake users I know (like Capt Mench), if they would be able to for the site http://www.proapptips.com
they are working on them but they are a little on the busy side at the moment.

  • To buy or not to?  Seek advice from longtime mac users...

I am a long time apple/mac user/owner (since 86!) and bought the powerbook pismo in 99, and the titanium 867. It's coming close to time on buying the new macbook pro.
But I have the feeling the mbp is more suited for those wanting to make a switch. I have no need for windows, I prefer just OS X. There is also a bunch of terminology and software incompatibility I have read about. Bundles, parallels, or something. And I would like to continue using a lot of my current applications on the mbp.
Is an upgrade from powerbook to mbp a problem for longtime mac users? Is there a handy site for some of the changes from the older powerbooks to the mbp?
    Thanks!

It all depends on what software you use.
Anything running under OS 9 or Classic is no longer supported. There are ways of running OS 9 on an intel mac using virtualisation, but if you really need a Classic app then you need to look hard at that.
Nearly all applications which run on the previous macs, Power PC or PPC for short run reasonably on intel macs. The OSX on new intel macs includes a program called Rosetta which seamlessly translates the Power PC application for the intel platform. For some applications there is a performance penalty - e.g. Photoshop - occasional users will not mind, graphic professionals will mind. This will be resolved when the next version of Photoshop comes out - a universal version which has the code to run on both intel and PowerPC without needing Rosetta.
Many other programs work well under Rosetta - for example Microsft Office is fine. Some programs run a bit slower than they did on the G5s but faster than on the G4s so many people upgrading from PowerBooks are happy with Rosetta performance. As applications are upgraded to Universal code, there will be less and less use of Rosetta.
Rosettal incidentally is seamless - you don't see it at work - you start the application and Rosetta does it's thing.
As for Parallels and Boot Camp, these are ways of running Windows on the mac. If you want to run Windows within OSX you can use parallels, if you want the option at start up to start up into Windows or OS X you can use boot Camp. If you don't need Windows you can ignore both.
So - if you come back and say what your current apps are, people here can tell you how they can be expected to run. It's not as different as you might think and the chances are everything you have will work fine.
    Best of luck.

  • Need some advice from MacBook Pro users

Hi all. I've been using Windows for as long as I've ever owned a computer. I have a background in graphic design and finally came down to needing a notebook. After some careful consideration I've decided to go with a Mac. I have used them before in the past on job and off and I've had some bad and good experiences with the Mac.
What I am trying to figure out is I have heard the Macbook pro has some heating issues. I am also not sure if I really need the macbook pro. I could easily just use the 13' inch without the graphic card. What I typically do is design in photoshop, dreamweaver, surf the net, etc. Basically it is a business computer. I don't use it to play games and as such I want to make sure I am making the right choice.
Is the Macbook 15' right for me? I am worried about over heating issues.
Also I could easily buy the 13' and just bump the ram to 2 gigs. I just wanted to see what everyone thought. Any advice?
      Windows XP

I just updated to the MacBook Pro 15 from a PowerBook 12, the MBP does seem a bit hotter than the PB but its not that bad of a problem, at least not when using Photoshop and Illustrator.
However, in terms of design, if you will be using the notebook as yoru primary design machine without an external monitor, the MBP 15 would be a much better choice. I'm an art director and I only use the notebook when I'm on location, most of the actual design work is still done on a G5 desktop. The MBP's screen is actually big enough to be productive in Photoshop and other design software, but the smaller screens like 13" can be a bit tough on the eye in the long term, managing screen real estate can also be annoying. Not to mention, the new glossy screen is very beautiful.

Hi, My name is Bheki Yende
I'm experiencing a problem with an app I've just purchased from iTunes, I have tried every piece of advice from the "iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store" and still nothing is working. I would like to get my refund on this pls.
This is an inconvenience, I don't understand why I have to contact the developer for a faulty product in your store.
I've paid iTunes to get this, so iTunes must fix this problem for me or give my money back.
    Thanks

This is a user forum, you are not speaking to Apple here.
You will need to contact iTunes support here, regarding this issue. They will usually respond within 24 hours.

  • After sql server 2012 installation, I have changed sql server database engine service account from network service user to system user. What is disadvantages of this process?

         After
sql server 2012 installation, I   attached my production db. Because of some reasons, i
changed sql engine account from network service user to system user by means of sql server configuration manager.
         Now , there isn’t
a problem at sql server running system.  But
    I have doubts that
     this can produce problems later. Because  sql server database engine account must have privileges that listed below;
Log on as a service (SeServiceLogonRight)
    Replace a process-level token (SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege)
    Bypass traverse checking (SeChangeNotifyPrivilege)
Adjust memory quotas for a process
    (SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege)
    Permission to start SQL Writer
Permission to read the Event Log service
Permission to read the Remote Procedure Call service
While sql server installation, setup gives these
privileges to network service user automatically, but changing user by means of sql confugarition manager does not give these
    privileges.
Now, system user has privileges listed below. And sql server has been running for 1,5 months without any problems.
Log on as a service (SeServiceLogonRight)
         Bypass traverse checking
(SeChangeNotifyPrivilege) (Everyone user has his privileges. So i think that system user has this privilege also)
    What problems can occur because of this situation? Shall i give other privileges to system user and restart sql server or not? And how can i give these privileges to system user listed below;
    Replace a process-level token (
this can be set from user rights assignments)
Adjust memory quotas for a process
(this can be set from user rights assignments)
Permission to start SQL Writer (
    ? - give advice )
Permission to read the Event Log service (
    ? - give advice )
Permission to read the Remote Procedure Call service (
    ? - give advice )

Our server is  windows server 2008 r2 enterprise edition. I have looked the bunch of permissions in user rights menu  that is in local security policy settings gui.
    And i have seen those permissions below were not granted to system user;
    Bypass traverse checking (SeChangeNotifyPrivilege)
Adjust memory quotas for a process
    (SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege)
So, briefly you say, don't panic ?

  • Limiting Number of connections from a single user

    Hi ,
I am using 9.2.0.6 DB, i need to restrict the number of connections from a single user to 100.
Currently the user is having DEFAULT profile, this profile is having several other users associated to it.
What are all the available options to create restriction for a single user.
Create a new profile and add the user to the New profile is the option i have.
In that case can i create a copy of the Default profile and changing the SESSIONS_PER_USER to 100? will it work.
    Appreciate your suggestion.
    Thanks,
    Sathis

    Hi,
Since it is a default profile you can just create a new profile with the resource type you are interested it.
And if you want to copy the existing profile extract its ddl through below command, change the profile name and required resource and run against the db.
    select dbms_metadata.get_ddl('PROFILE','<Profile_name>') from dual;Regards

  • Trying to install SL on a new hard-drive for my iMac, when asked which disk to install on it gave me no options, i followed advice from another forum and created a partition, now can't boot from the new drive at all. Help?

I've had **** with my iMac, the hard-drive failed so i replaced it with a new 1TB Samsung drive. Then when i tried to install SL from the install disk, all went to plan until it asked me which drive i wanted to install it on, where it came up with a box where my options should have been, but instead it didn't give me any options to install it on any drive i.e. it asked which drive i wanted to install it on but no drives came up to select.
So i followed the advice from another forum, look at the 'Extended Hard-drive preparation' response
    ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10576009#10576009 )
After following these instructions i have now got a new partition, but when i restarted my computer to install SL on the drive, the option to boot from the drive is now not available, now i must boot from the install disk, whereas before i was able to boot from either the install disk or the hard drive. The hard drive is still visible in disk utility as it always has been, but i am now unable to boot from it, let alone install SL.
Please help my iMac has been broken for months and i've been trying to fix it for so long and am getting problem after problem. Thank you!

    Hi db2
That off the shelf MS-DOS / FAT-32 drive needs to re-partitioned GUID Partition Table / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can install OS X and Startup your Intel iMac from it.
    1. Boot from your original install or retail SL DVD and open Disk Utility.
    2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
    3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
    4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
    5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.
    6. Once thats done, then you can do a clean SL Install, Restore from TM , your old HD or  Bootable Clone.

  • How can I transfer iPhoto files from one admin user to another on the same Mac?

i created a new admin user on my computer, so now my husband has one and so do i. how can i transfer our iphoto files from his admin user to mine as a shared file? i was able to do this with itunes easily but i am not able to do it with iphoto.

You want to share the Library?
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How do I transfer my itunes library from different mac user accounts?

I was planning to make a new user account (not itunes) for myself on my mac since my other is completely screwed up, but if i do this i will lose my itunes account. How do i transfer my library from the old user account to the new one.

Using administrator status on the computer you should be able to move the whole iTunes folder from one account to the other.  Put it in the equivalent music folder.
You may need to adjust user permissions on the folder and everything in it so it belongs to the new user.  Read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914

  • TS1969 What if I want iTunes to run from the other user's account, but I want to work in my account for a while, without interupting what is playing?  When I switch to my account, how can I STOP iTunes FROM TRYING TO OPEN on my side?

We like listening to music playing from wife's user account.
I want to do some work from my account.
I don't want iTunes to open on my user account.
It keeps trying to, giving me the alert beep and the "Cannot Open iTunes" alert.
How do I make it stop trying to automatically open on one account when it is already playing on the other account?
Again, I want to keep listening to what is playing through my wife's account, therefore I don't want it to open or try to open on my account.
    Thanks for any guidance.

Thanks. I messed up with my husbands iphone because I was told the wrong thing. Now everytime I sync his phone it makes it look just like the other phone I had. Do you know how I can fix taht for his phone? Any settings I can turn off that will prevent all of my apps/contacts, etc from auto populating his phone?

Well, that didn't work since I am already using my appleID for both FaceTime and iMessage but i did see the option to send as SMS when iMessage not available.  so I am now able to send to him  but I don't know if he can send to me.  It's a start.  It is only with his phone.  His wife has a Galaxy and they are both on AT&T and she can send and receive.  I am on sprint.  If that info helps

  • IMessage is blocking texts from other iphone users

I am not able to send or receive texts from other iphone users because of imessage.  I am ready to quit Apple and ATT because of it.  Both my wife and the manager of my business can no longer contact me because of the bugs in iMessage.  I don't care whether the message shows up as blue or green, I simply want to send or receive them.  First, their numbers only showed up as phone numbers instead of contacts.  Then I added them as Iphone users and now I can't send or receive messages with them.  I've tried deleting and adding and then deleting their numbers.  Rebooting works for a bit.  If they don't fix this bug, I'm quitting iPhone.  Seriously.

If you'd like to calm down and actually ask a coherent question, we'll consider it.
Since you don't actually make any attempt to describe what the circumstances are or what happens when you try to send or when someone sends you a message, we can't offer much assistance.

  • How to find out from whcih terminal user tried logging in and failed

    Hello All,
One of the user is trying to login using master userid (SAP* / DDIC).. But he is failing after three attempts resulting in locking the SAP* / DDIC user id.
We are unable to trace who is attempting this? If we know from which terminal user is trying to login we can find out the person.
Even in SM21 we are unable to see from which terminal user is trying to login..(We can see the terminal clearly in SM04). Could you please suggest us how to trace the person responsible for this issue?
    Thanks,
    Subbu

    Hi,
The terminal details can be obtained through securiy audit logging.
You can enable to Security logging for the users SAP*/DDIC using the tcode SM19 and the logs can be viewed using the tcode SM20.
To  to activate the security audit logging you need to set the value '1' for the parameter rsau/enable. The log file size can be set using the parameter rsau/max_diskspace/local. You can set the number of slots to be used for security auditing purpose using the profile parameter rsau/selection_slots in the default profile.
    Hope this information helps.
