Gratuitous kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this

Ok, I know I probably shouldn't have installed Tiger on my G3 iMac so you don't need to remind me. However, it runs pretty good and I hardly ever even see the beachball spinning when I ask it to do something. What I am shocked, shocked by is the ridiculous amount of frequency that I end up with a kernel panic that gives me the 'gray screen' telling me I have to restart my Mac. I have been able to keep this down to a minimum by pointedly only running programs and commands one at a time with a good sized pause in between but even with that I am diappointed with how often it happens. Call me a heretic, but I think it would have killed Apple to stick with their classic OS framework rather than go to UNIX. I would like some tips about things I could do to minimize this occurence above what I already do. It really ***** to have had to reinstall Tiger about 3 or 4 times since I upgraded and have to change up the screen position, dock, desktop, mouse, screen saver, and reinstall all my programs after my iMac has croaked and finally accepted another reload of Tiger.

I'll ignore the major portion of your post which comes across as a rant and try to stick with the title: "kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this?"
Kernel panics are usually caused by bad or marginal RAM or RAM that isn't seated properly, or by buggy or damaged software or drivers. In the past, problems with marginal RAM for Macs has shown up when people upgraded to new versions of the OS -- which might fit your situation.
Although your CPU is slow, you have lots of RAM, so Tiger should run OK, if the RAM is not defective. You don't mention how much free space you have on your hard drive. Typically you're going to need at least 5 Gig free to give Tiger breathing room.
Running a system maintenance utility like Yasu would probably also be beneficial:

What does the hardware test for your Mac say about your system? This might help us determine if there is a hardware cause for the kernel panics.

I know that Firefox continues running in the background because after I exit the program, I use CCleaner and it indicates programs are still running: Firefox. This happens every time I exit Firefox. There seems to be a default mechanism to keep it running. How can I prevent this?

I'm not excellent with computers and hardly know anything about coding, but I'm thinking "ATI Radeon 8500", my current graphics card, is what is causing the kernel panic. Am I correct? If so, what can be done about this problem, short of buying a new computer or card?

    Hello viper14400,
Still Panicking? If so here are a few things in no particular order that you can check.
See if your Airport Extreme card has a loose connection:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iBook-G4-12-Inch-800-MHz-1-2-GHz-A irPort-Extreme-Card/154/1
Remove your 1 GB stick of Ram and see if it still panics:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iBook-G4-12-Inch-800-MHz-1-2-GHz-R AM/156/1
From disc 1 of your original install discs run the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
I believe some programmer from Apple a long time ago put that ATIRadeon8500(4.1.8) in just to
reference a generic video card. Don't really know because I have never dealt with Kernel Panic
before. If you look top left of screen>apple>about this Mac>More Info>Hardware>Graphics/Displays
I believe you'll see you have a +ATI Mobility Radeon 9200+ and I hope that isn't what is giving you
problems because it is integrated to the Logic Board and would require a Logic Board Replacement/

If nothing else at least my reply will move you from page 13 to the top of page 1 for a while where
someone like cornelius, Lyssa or Niel may be able to offer some help.

  • My IMac shuts off in the middle of an application.  How can I prevent this?

Frequently, when I am using my IMAC, the machine suddenly shuts down and then restarts. It is very frustrating and I have lost unsaved work on many occasions. Has anyone else run into the same problem and if so, how do I prevent it from happening in the future?

You are going to have to provide more information...
The only time I ever encountered this was when I went to do a service call on someone with a loose connection on the plug right in the back of his iMac. Not every time but often when he wiggled the screen to adjust it he moved the power bar and / or power cable just enough to momentarily break contact.
We plugged everything in securely and the problem never recurred...
If yours is shutting down & restarting because of a power circuit fault there must be a problem with it that should be looked at.

  • Editing some photos on a MacBook, I get them on the Photo Stream on my iMac. Having set "automatically import Photo Stream to Library" in preferences, I still don't get them in the iMac photo library. How can I achieve this?

I'm editing my photos on a MacBook Air and then photostreaming. On my iMac, I get the photos in Photo Stream, where they cannot be changed. I've set the Photo Stream preferences to "automatically import to Library" - but that does not happen. How can I get these new photos into my "old" iMac photo library?

The monthly events "Feb2014" will show you all photos that have been imported from "My Photo STream", if you have enabled "Automatic Import" in the "Preferences > iCloud" tab.
The albums you are seeing under "iCloud" are the "Shared Photo Streams" and "My Photo Stream". To import from your "Shared Streams" drag the photos frommthe Shared Streams album to the Projects in the library panel.

  • I don't want mail deleted from my iPhone to delete from my iMac.  How can I prevent this?

I like to keep my iPhone mailbox clean, but I noticed that the new software deletes message from my iMac Inbox when I delete them out of my iPhone Inbox.  I am not using iCloud for email on either device.  How do I stop this from happening?

You cannot control whether the account is POP or IMAP, the email protocol is determined by the email provider.  What Larry is pointing out is the way the two protocols function.  If your account is an IMAP protocol account, you cannot control removal on opening.  If it is a POP account you can.  Since you say the account comes up IMAP then there isn't anything you can do to preserve the email for another device short of forwarding it to yourself so it reappears.

  • My printer (HP8500) is wi-fi connected to my imac and my macbook. works fine from macbook, but has stopped working on the imac--shows offline. How can I fix this? Thanks

I have an iMac and MacBook Pro, both running Snow Leopard at current maintenance levels. I have an HP8500 printer connected via wi-fi. All have been working well until just recently. Now, the iMac cannot communicate with the printer. The printer icon shows offline. The printer is still online to the MacBook. I suspect a related problem is that when I try to access files on the MacBook from the iMac, I get a message that they are unavailable, but re-clicking once or twice to re-try works and the files are accessible. The only problem is that I cannot modify them from the iMac, even though the sharing options are set for update capability.
Resetting the printer and re-booting the iMac don't help.

    Yosemite is a big problem.
I recommend you factory reset the TC and start over.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Redo the setup from Yosemite.. it needs to be directly involved in the setup to remember anything.
Please use short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 base station name. TCwifi as wireless name.
Set password WPA2 Personal security which is pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
Please empty out all the old wireless names from your devices.. reboot them and rediscover the network.
If it still fails tell us.

  • Clicking on a link repeatedly gets multiple copies of Firefox running. How do I prevent this?

My laptop has a nasty habit of loading one copy of Firefox every time I click on a link in an email message. Once this starts it quickly degrades system performance (not surprising). It is caused by my impatience. the longer it takes, the worse things get. This is windows 7. Is there some box I can check to stop this?
If one clicks on Firefox in the tray, it behaves fine. You can click until the key falls off, but get only one copy.

    Hi RCPyle,
If you have Firefox already running, when clicking on a link does it open another instance?
Holding "Control+Shift" while clicking on the links is an option.
Also the Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.
'''''Note:''' After resetting Firefox, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences.'' See the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article for more information.
    To Reset Firefox:
    # Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
#*Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Troubleshooting Information''. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
#*If you're unable to access the Help menu, type '''about:support''' in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
#At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox" that looks like this: [[Image:Button reset]]. Click on it.
#Firefox will close and reset. After it is done, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
#Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.
Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

You cannot accidentally download Mavericks. You have to select to download it. You can always erase your drive and reinstall from the backup you made before you installed Mavericks.

Follow this guide. There are numerous files scattered around that must be removed.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning
