Gray Apple Logo screen after Mavericks Install

Tried twice to migrate from Lion to Mavericks on a Macbook Pro 2009 vintage. Both cases the final reboot hung after a successful install msg....waited 1.5 hours, still a screen with a cursor and the grey screen with Apple logo.
Had to CMD  R to reinstall to try again and it failed a second time. Repeated CMD R to reinstall Lion from Time Machine. After 6 hours, I am back to before the install..  Need ideas, suggestion before trying again... Have the latest Lion updates installed etc...
Thanks in advance!
Tony

See my post on the other thread.. I was able to solve this without loss of data by running this script and fixing the partition. It seems this problem may be happening quite often.

  • Stops at gray apple logo screen.

I turn on my mac mini and it goes to the gray apple logo screen. The pinwheel starts spinning below the logo. This is all normal. Then, it take way to long and nothing happens. The computer just restarts and the entire process starts over again.
    What do i do?

i've tried putting in the hardware test cd and holding down 'c' but i just get the gray screen without the pinwheel.

  • IMac G4 hangs at apple logo screen after 10.5.8 update

Hello, thanks for any help you can provide with this problem.
Machine is iMac G4 flat panel. Did an erase and install of Leopard over firewire from iMac G5. Immediately copied 10.5.8 combo update I'd downloaded earlier from the G5 and ran it on the G4. The update completed successfully, albeit slowly, and I clicked restart. After a long wait at blank desktop, machine rebooted on its own. It got as far as the Apple logo screen with spinner spinning, and then it hung. I didn't want to jump to conclusions that it was indeed frozen, so I let it sit there and spin for at least 2 hours. Even for an old G4 this seemed like a bit much, so I forced it to power off and tried again. Still hangs.
At this point I figure something went wrong with the update, so I did another erase and install of virgin Leopard over firewire from the same G5. Repeated update process. It once again completed successfully, I clicked restart, it paused, then rebooted on its own again. To my great dismay, it once again hung at the spinny spinner Apple logo screen.
Now, this is the fourth G4 machine I've done this on in the last week, and the other three are running normally. 1 was another iMac G4, the other 2 were eMac G4's.
    Any suggestions?

Interestingly, I brought the G4 into work today and connected it to the G5 with FireWire and turned both on. For some reason (I'm not Mac Pro here, so this might be obvious to some of you) the G5 booted from the G4's HDD and the system started up just fine. I ran repair permissions on the G4's HDD and restarted it. It now boots up fine. Not sure if it was the repairing permissions that fixed it or booting the OS on a different machine. Either way, problem is resolved. Thanks for your input.
    Edit: Fixed typo

  • Imac 5k stuck on apple logo screen after latest update

Hi - i have a magazine deadline and a major issue:
i've been having loads of kernel panics (see thread here Brand new imac 5k kernel panic) and having seen there was a new update figured it would be worth installing it to see if it fixed them as nothing so far suggested by apple support has helped. Once it had downloaded the update the OS said it needed to reboot to finish installation.  It got half way through the loading bar on the apple logo screen and got stuck. I left it an hour, came back still nothing. Left it another hour and it was still just stuck half way.  I rebooted into diagnostics and ran that and it said everything was fine but further reboots just get as far as halfway through the bar.  I'm now stuck as the computer was only a month or so old and i hadn't yet set up back up on it. I was still in the process of getting everything configured and over from my old machine.  Problem is I have a bunch of photos that were transferred on to it that i shot 2 weeks ago and I need them for a magazine deadline tomorrow and apple support options could only call me back on Thursday - if anyone can suggest anything i will be VERY grateful. I've already tried SMC and PRAM resets.

I did that, a fresh OS install and it worked for about 4 hours then i got a kernel panic

  • My ipad froze on the apple logo screen after installing ios8  what do i dd?

my ipad froze in the apple logo restart screen when I tried to install ios8.  it wont do anything.  please help!

Try a reset.  Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Stuck on Gray Apple logo screen, Gear keep spinning.

I have macBook. I was preparing m self for iPhone Development.
So i was installing the reference libraries. I click 2 or 3 library to get download, window become irresponsive. I was little impatient to know what has happened that what happened to my computer, I did powered it OFF, just form the next booting, my mac book is getting stuck on the gray screen with apple logo, gear is keep spinning.
I googled and read several article about the stucking of aaple product. but got nothing, just new combination of keys then new style of booting.
I came to know about the single user mode, I did that it went to single user mode
    I did
fsck -fy and mount -uw /
it checking the root file system and told that file system modified.
then after typing the exit it start doing something and screen scrolls up.
then it just stuck on this mDNSResponder line...
(com.apple.mDNSResponder153): posix_spawnp(„/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder“, ….): No such file or directory
it not able to find it and keep trying for it. it seems this will run forever,
Can someone please suggest something that might fix this?
what is the procedure to restore from the install DVD, will it overwrite the all data which id in the Mac HD, or will just over write the system files.
But I want to keep this a last option, when everything is failed.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and I will love if something can tell me about the problem also

    Try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Finder Shows a "Scrambled" Screen After Mavericks Install

Installed Mavericks last night. Everything went fine except for the "completing installation" (after the machine reboots) where I got a message telling me "less than a minute to go" even though it took close to an hour. But it did finish and I was excited.
After the install, and prior to going to bed, I noticed that everything on the machine was very slow, performance-wise. But I was also aware that Spotlight was probably re-indexing my entire machine and didn't worry.
Just got up and decided to check out the machine. Performance-wise, it seems to be back to normal. However, just as I was about to breathe a big sigh of relief, I am noticing that the Finder (and only the finder so far, no issues with any other software that I've noticed) is having some major display issues. For instance, lets say I'm in my Downloads folder. Everything is in list format (my preference) nice, normal and neat. But if I grab a file (just a random JPG) and throw it in the trash... well, as soon as I do that everything goes berserk in that Finder window.
Have tried toggling the display options at the top of the window (icons, cover flow, etc...) and while it will change what shows up in the window, it is still scrambled. Ditto for navigating to a new window. If I choose desktop (currently empty) I get a plain white window but if I show any other folder with content in it, its the same scrambled view.
What's more is that when I attempted to take a screenshot, it doesn't render the scrambling, just puts a gray window in place of where the scrambling effect was. I have included that screenshot here and then I also took a literal photograph of my screen and attached that as well.
Can anyone help? I'm afraid of rebooting my machine for fear of making the problem worse. And I foolishly did not do all of the back-up steps recommended before a Mavericks install, so that may limit my options moving forward. Ugh.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Man, I'm afraid to say it but it is starting to look like the Finder glitch thing is the least of my worries. After spending a couple of hours on my Mac, I'm finding that my earlier statement about speeds being back to normal was incorrect. Everything is SLOOOOOW. Even typing in this Window is taking forever becuase there's a long lag, characters jumping, etc...
This seems to extend everywhere. Web pages are incredibly slow to load now. Apps are taking forever to load. It just took 90+ seconds to open Safari. Ugh.
A day ago I had a lightning fast machine with a reliable OSX that had never given me a single issue. Now I've got a slow, glitchy POS that wouldn't come out on top if it was facing off against a 10 year-old HP. Thanks a lot, Apple.

  • Apple ID problem after Mavericks install

    Hello Everyone,
After upgrading to Mavericks I tried to read one of my books in ibooks, and after signing in with my apple id I received a notification with the following error "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID." The book was originally bought and downloaded on my iPad, but I cannot download them on my Mac. I also get the same error in iTunes when I try to play/download a song from the cloud.
I managed to get the book after syncronizing my iOS devices, but I was wondering if anyone encountered this.

Now that I think about it, this started happening after I installed iTunes 11

I set my phone to update overnight, woke up this morning and it showed an icon to plug the phone into iTunes. Upon plugging in the phone, itunes said the phone needed to be restored first. iTunes downloaded an update and went through the motions, then said that the phone was not eligable.
What do I do? It won't show anything other than the apple logo.

Try updating to the latest version of iTunes.

  • MBP stuck on Grey Screen after Mavericks Install

I have a MBP 5,5 and every time I try installing Mavericks my computer restarts and after the grey spinning wheel my screen flashes black and then stops at a grey screen. I have tried running in Verbose mode and I notice it said I have a SMC error and that it tries to use an old SMC. If I try installing mavericks to an external drive everything is fine. Could it be something configured in one of my programs?

  • Mercury CUDA not enabling when using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 on Apple Mac Pro after Mavericks install

Been using the same setup since CS5 with the Mercury CUDA running perfectly. After recent upgrade of OS X to 10.9 Mercury CUDA is no longer available and only lets me run with the OpenGL or software options. Im using a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 for apple computers. Here are the results for the GPUSniffer program in the latest Premiere Pro 7.1.0 files. The LAST line make me chucle because it the first on the list of supported card in the "cuda_supported_cards.txt" file. Anybody else seen this?

    Hi Wendell,
Sorry for the inconvenience. NVIDIA is currently working on drivers that support CUDA on Mavericks 10.9 with some of the older NVIDIA cards such as the GTX 285 and the Quadro 4800.
For others interested, the Quadro 4000, K5000 and GTX 680 ect... work with CUDA in 10.9.
    Best,
    Peter Garaway

    Premiere Pro
I have latest CUDA drivers, so i guess i am just waiting till a proper update that have the fixes to support my card.

  • Apple Mail crashing after Mavericks install

Can someone please advise - ever since I upgraded to Mavericks mail crashes. I open Mail (I have 2 apple mail accounts) and it loads my messages. As soon as I click on a message the app crashes. I've sent numerous reports and have to log in through Chrome or Safari which is really really annoying. Please help!!!
Also I don't want to go into Terminal - it makes me nervous - so if anyone has any other tips it would be great. Apple please do an update on this.

I picked up this hint from a similar thread which provides for a little releif.  I have three accounts: iCloud, personal Time Warner POP, business IMAP.  If I only have iCloud active everything is great.  If I try to make an additional account active ( doesn't matter whether it's the POP account or the IMAP ), the Viewer Window in Mail will become unresponsive.  [ Keep in Mind that Mail is still running, but you can't see it because everything has locked up.  It's almost as if your were clicking on a screen shot.  However, you can tell that Mail is still running because the menu's are still working.]
If I activate both my POP and IMAP, everything is great - - - - as long as I don't activate the iCloud account.  Since I get my iCloud mail on both my iPad and iPhone, I can live without it being on my MacBook until Apple gets a fix out.  Obviously, my business IMAP is most crucial for me.
Here's the procedure:  QUIT Mail.  Open System Preferences and click on the "Internet Accounts" preference pane.  Next, select each email account on the list and either uncheck the "Mail" icon box, or uncheck the "Enable this account" box. Do this for each account.  Close System Preferences.
Next:  Launch Mail.  You will see what looks like a standard mail account without any content.  No worries.  Select the "Mail" menu and choose "Preferences".  Click on the "Accounts" tab.  Click on each account and check the "Enable this account" box.  You will see your content reload.  You won't see your iCloud account in the list.  If all you want is iCloud mail, then DO NOT activate any of the other accounts and instead go back to System Preferences/Internet Accounts and check the Mail icon box for iCloud.
I only have two non-iCloud accounts, so I don't know what will happen if you have 3 or more accounts.  Let us know what you find out.
I am functional for now.  Things seem to be stabile for the moment.  I will let you know if things change.

  • No progression from gray apple/pinwheel screen after starting

I can hear the fan and the pinwheel turns but it never gets anywhere. I can leave it on all night and my desktop never loads. Please help, I don't know much about computers. I bought it from my boyfriend months ago and never used it because it didn't have a card for wireless internet. Now that I want to sell it it doesn't work.

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions!
First, let's try some simple procedures.
    1. Reset the PRAM. Right after you press the power button, hold down Option, Command (Apple Key next to Option), and the keys "P" and "R" at the same time. Keep holding these keys down until you hear the second startup chime. Then release the keys.
    2. If that doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode. Information is found here at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455. If you can boot into safe mode:
    1. Go to Disk Utility (Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility)
    2. Under the First Aid tab, select "Repair Permissions." This should take a few minutes.
    3. Once done, restart your eMac.
    3. If the above fails, you might need to reinstall Mac OS X. Do you have the restore disc or a retail copy of Mac OS X?
    Best of luck,
    Brian
