Gray Box Appearing in PDFs

Whenever I make an eps from ID and then I distill the pdf, I'm getting a gray shadow box behind anyting that is suppose to be white. It only shows up after the pages has gone to press. I can't see it on the screen or when it's printed out on our laser printer. This has happened before and I was able to fix it. Unfortunantly, I can't remeber what I did. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

Hi.
I figured out what the issue was, at least in my case. If I go to Quiz>Quiz Preferences>Settings and look at the "Required:" field the following was selected: "Answer All- The user must answer every question to continue".
When I change that setting to "Required- The user must take the quiz to continue" it works just fine.
This sort of makes sense now that I think about it. The other option grays out the skip button to require that they answer every question. So, when the widget was used, the graying out was still showing through even though the button was hidden.
Thanks,
Kelly

  • Gray Box Appeared in Quiz - How To Remove It?

I am using Captivate 5.5, and I utilized the skipRemove widget in my template to hide the Skip button in the quiz.
It worked perfectly until recently.   Out of the blue, instead of the Skip button just being hidden, a gray box appeared where it used to be.
I tried to remove the widget and reinsert it, but that did not fix the problem. Instead, I got a weird error message saying "Not a valid widget," which I know to be false.
I am HOPING to find a solution that removes the gray box w/o me having to completely re-create the template, as all of my current changes to the template would have to be re-done.
    Thoughts??

  • Lightroom not importing photos.  Gray box appears.

I was tethering to Lightroom and suddenly the program failed to import photos.  All that would come up was a gray box.  I tired everything.  I re-started the program, my computer, my camera.  2 days later, and I still cannot get an image to show up in Lightroom.  Any advice?

    Thanks Keith,
I talked to a support person, and it turns out that my cache was the problem.  He re-named it and I am back in business.  Thank you for your help!

  • I can't open an .ai file in Illustrator without a dialog box appearing "Open PDF."  I have no idea what I can't open it as an Illustrator file (and not a PDF)

Once I open a page as a PDF, all my layer info is lost.  I've tried opening it on two machines and the dialog box continues to appear.  Again, it's not a PDF extension.
    Thanks for the help!

Since you're sure you saved it back to CS5, the issue might have been caused by saving directly to the server. Illustrator does not particularly like that.
90% of corrupt files are caused by saving directly to the server.
You might try and first copy the file to your harddisk and then open it from there. Opening files directly from the server is an issue as well.

  • New iPod Touch.  After using it for awhile a gray box appeared around an app icon.  Whatever app I try to tap, the gray box appears and the app will not open.  I cannot even open Settings.  Tried a restart with no effect.  Any ideas?

Also, when we tried to sync with iTunes, got an error message stating, This iPod cannot be used because the Mobile Device Service has not been activated.  iPod is WiFi only isn't it?  This made no sense at all.  The iPod is brand new, just taken out of box yesterday.

Could it be Dreamweaver itself? I noticed there has been an update lately with Dreamweaver to my computer...some new Live option has been added. I use the online subscription to Dreamweaver. This is happening on all my pages with the images on all my sites, only shows up with the gray box if I make a change to a page. If I don't make a change to a page the page appear fine and in working order. I'm confused and frustrated. Any other options you may know of or suggest? Thank you so much for your time. I've provided screen shots from Goggle and Firefox below.

  • The new tab button is now surrounded by a large gray box after downloading the new version

Rather than seeing just the small rounded light gray button around the "+" sign for a new tab, there is now a larger, dark grey rectangle (larger than the new button itself) over the "+" sign. When I hover, the rounded part of the button appears, but the larger gray box remains.
It's almost like I'd like to write a short {display: none !important}, but I'm new to Firebug, and can't figure out how to get the name of that part of the screen.
I have a screen shot which I'd like to add to this post, but having difficulty adding it in.

    Hello,
You can add screenshots to replies only. Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration first to see if that gets rid of it. You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
    # Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
You can also see if the gray box appears in [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] - it could be caused by an extension.
If those don't help, then please attach a screenshot by clicking the '''Browse...''' button below the ''Post your reply'' box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

  • Framemaker 8 Embedded Graphic prints as a Gray box

Sometimes when I save my book as PDF, an imported graphic prints as a gray box in the PDF and then corrupts the framemaker source file.
It loses the graphic (an imported .WMF file) and substitutes a gray box.
Framemaker 8.0p277 on Windows XP SP2.
Has anyone else seen this problem ?

If it is imported by copy or as an OLE object, then it is known to happen. Try importing by reference.

  • I am not able to open the pdf attachments that someone has sent me it comes up with a gray box saying adobe could not open they have sent it a few times in different ways but still can't open it i use windows 7

I am not able to open the pdf attachments that someone sent me it comes up with a gray box saying adobe cannot open?

Make sure the pdf has the '.pdf' extension on the file name. I've seen this a few times and adding the extension usually solves the problem.

  • Open .pdf file in Word & "Convert File" Box appears...Weird.

Using my MacBook Pro, I click on a PDF file to open in Microsoft Word & an angry box appears that says "Convert File."
In the box it says: Convert file from: then it lists various file types i.e., Text only, MS-DOS Text, Rich Text Format, HTML Document, Single File Web Page, Unicode Text and many more.
It is trying to open a PDF file in Microsoft Word.
I can't figure out how to change so it opens!!!
I made the fancy document myself in Microsoft Word and saved it in PDF format on the same computer.
I am a new Mac user....so if you tell me to go somewhere (well, not anywhere..on the computer!); please be specific and help me get there!
I've tried the right click trick, open with trick...no luck.  That's not even an option!
This kindergarten teacher THANKs YOU oh so much!

    I found this...But I don't understand it.   I downloaded the latest versions...still can't view the PDF.
Am I doing something wrong?  I don't want to edit it!  I just want to VIEW IT~!
    Overview
Adobe Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-ins before version 10.1.3 are incompatible with the Safari 5.1 browser that shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 and for 10.6. The Adobe Reader and Acrobat stand-alone applications are unaffected and Safari 5.1 renders PDF documents natively. However, the Adobe Reader and Acrobat browser plug-ins before 10.1.3 don't function as expected in LiveCycle and Acrobat workflows that require either plug-in to render PDF documents in Safari 5.1.
    To the top
    Affected customers
Any Adobe Reader, Acrobat, and LiveCycle customers who require the Adobe Reader or Acrobat plug-in to render PDF documents in a browser when only Safari 5.1 is present.
    To the top
    Workarounds
    Options include the following:
Continue to use Safari 5.0.x and Mac OS X 10.6.
Upgrade to Adobe Reader or Acrobat version 10.1.3 or later.
Save the PDF file from Safari to the computer, and then open it directly in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
Use desktop virtualization technology such as Citrix to allow applications to run in a controlled environment where the Safari browser isn't upgraded to version 5.1.
    To the top
Can customers use a different web browser like Chrome or Opera?
Acrobat Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-in are dependent on the WebKit WebPlugin API and capabilities that are unique to Safari. Other browsers like Chrome or Opera do not have the required functionality to run the plug-ins properly. As of the 10.1.3 release of Reader, Firefox running in 32-bit mode is now supported on Mac OS.
What is the impact on LiveCycle Workspace?
Since LiveCycle Workspace operates in the browser, PDF Forms in Workspace don't function in Safari 5.1 using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions earlier than 10.1.3.
What is the impact on Adobe Solutions Accelerators?
    Interactive Statements
In the primary use case for Interactive Statements, PDFs are delivered via email and can be opened with the stand-alone Adobe Reader or Acrobat. The secondary use case, where the statement is generated and displayed on a website, requires Adobe Reader or Acrobat to operate in-browser and doesn't function using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions before 10.1.3.
    Correspondence Management
Internal employees (the Case worker/Claims adjustor and the business user personas) require Adobe Reader and Acrobat to function in-browser and don't function with Safari 5.1 using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions before 10.1.3. External user use cases do not require that the Adobe Reader or Acrobat operate in-browser, so they aren't affected by the Safari 5.1 browser.
Managed Review & Approval (MRA) and Integrated Content Review (ICR)
Since the MRA and ICR solutions require Workspace, these customer use cases can't function in the Safari 5.1 browser using Adobe Reader or Acrobat versions before 10.1.3.

  • Gray Box Around Text Boxes in PDF

I've created a text box with a picture frame "stroke" (the one that looks like a slightly curled piece of paper). When I export the file to PDF and open it in Acrobat, in addition to the background graphic of the paper with the drop shadow, there is a faint box that circumscribes the actual text box within the graphic. This faint box does not display when I view the PDF in Preview (or in Pages). This happens in both Pages 08 and 09. When I print from Pages or Preview, the faint boxes are not there. But when I print from Acrobat, they are. Also, I've created the PDF from both the Share>Export option and the Save PDF option in the Print dialog box, with the same results.
Is there any way to not have this faint box appear in the PDF when viewing it in Acrobat? This problem is preventing me from being able to distribute the document in PDF format to PC users.
    Thanks.

I'm disappointed that Pages '09 still does this, although it may be because of Adobe's wacky way of handling PDF documents. I've posted examples of this on this forum before, but nobody was able to help. The line artifact isn't because of the text box, but rather the picture frame effect you're applying. These lines not only appear on screen in Acrobat, but print that way too.
There is a workaround I use when I create Pages documents using graphic borders like the curled paper one you mention.
Instead of exporting your Pages document as a PDF, use *Print>PDF>Save As Postscript...*
The PDF button is at the bottom of the print dialog box, select *Save As Postcript* from the pull-down.
Once your .ps file is created, double click it and it will open in Preview. Then save it as a PDF from Preview using *File>Save As...>PDF*. Open this file in Acrobat to check it, and you'll find that the border problem has gone away.
One note: Upon close-up side by side comparison, you'll notice that your graphics aren't quite as crisp looking, like they've lost some resolution. But I've had both versions professionally printed at high resolution, and the difference is very minor. It's just that the original Export feature of Pages produces better looking PDF files, especially on Macs. Your PC users have to use Acrobat Reader, which doesn't seem to render PDF documents as nicely on screen.
    Hope this helps.

  • Gray box for logo generating pdf from fm book

    Greetings,
I have a large FrameMaker book that I've generated pdfs from a million times. We cleaned up our logo, so I dropped it in and tried to generate the usual pdf. a gray box resulted for the logo only. all other artwork displayed fine. i tried scaling down the logo, changing formats, changing import methods, etc. all failed. however, generating a pdf from the book if I remove a few chapters gives me my logo. Am I running out of resources? I'm using tech comm suite 1.3 on vista. There are no clues in the acrobat log. show large images is turned on in the adobe reader.
I used the obvious workaround: generated two pdfs, one with just the logo page and one with the rest of the book, then combined them. But this process is not practical long term. Any clues?

    A couple questions:
What format is the new logo file?
Given that it works with some component files, but not in the book... I'd guess that it may be a resource issue. How much RAM and free space do you have?
And when you "dropped it in," does that mean imported into one file by reference, or copied in, or imported into a template that you used to update all files in the book..... or something else? And if it did update multiple files, did you double-check them to make sure the path to the graphic is correct?

  • HELP!  Exporting pdf issues - no email links and gray boxes around text

I'm a newbie to indesign, and trying to learn the program as I go.  I need to export my pdf for onscreen viewing.  When I "print" it works, but I get no email links, and those annoying white lines here and there.  I read that exporting would solve the email link issue, but it opened another can of worms for my project.  Now all my graphics have black or gray boxes across them, almost like censor boxes.  But my email links work.
Learning Adobe is like learning a new language, and I have far from mastered it.  So when I exported, I used the lowest resolution presets, assuming it knew what worked better than I did.  After dozens of unsuccessful exports, can someone please help??
Also, I've been reading posts that say to convert all spots to color to resolve the white line issue.  But it's grayed out in the ink manager.  What is the secret to unlock it?
    Thank you!!

Thank you for any and all help!
I have CS5.5, running on windows 7.  It is up to date as of 1 month ago.  Here's a sample of my problem pages.  Also, a screen shot of what it should look like.  My guess is it has something to do with the transparencies, since it's 2+ layers of embossed objects.  If I export in Acrobat 4 (1.3) these boxes don't happen. But then I get the thin white lines across my graphics, and no email links.  As for spot colors, I confess complete ignorance on all color issues,  but  I'm trying to learn as I go.  How can I export this correctly?

  • Gray box around images in PDF and when printing? Why?

    Hi,
I'm using CS5 and I'm getting a gray box around any image embedded in my document.  The box comes if I click on it when a PDF and it prints around them.  I can't seem to figure this one out.  I'm not used to prepping files for print and I'm trying to send this out to someone who needs to print it.
    It's CMYK.
I've tried to flatten transparency using both vector and rasterize.
I've made sure the images are embedded.
    I can't figure this out!!
    Please, help.
    Thanks.

    I am running Firefox RC.

    figured it out:
    - power off mac and turn back on while holding down Command + R (dont do it on an external keyboard just to be safe)
    - choose the re-install Lion option (I'm sure there is another way to re-install Lion, this is just the way I did it, not saying its the best or only method)
    - DO NOT INSTALL MACBOOK (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0 - THIS SCREWS ADOBE UP!
