Gray error box to shut down

I'm getting a gray error box that I've never seen before that states "turn off computer immediately by holding in the power button". Has anyone experienced this? I shut my machine down and restarted. The window popped up again. I'm not sure if this is an application error or something else.

chrabeneck,
"Peripherals: printer and iPod dock..."
Have these always been connected?
When you disconnected them as advised, did the KPs stop?
"...I added an airport extreme card..."
Have you checked it to see if it is still seated properly?
"I'd feel better having a solid back up before more testing."
Have you created that yet?
"...repair disk, I did not attempt this as I have ordered a backup hard drive and it's not here yet."
Running Repair Disk is the first step when when troubleshooting Kernel Panics, as it should not jeopardize your data.
But I understand your caution!
"80GB hard drive; 13.96 GB available"
You may be running to close to a safe parameter of available free space.
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
Authored by Dr Smoke:
Problems From Insufficient RAM And Free Hard Disk Space
Freeing Space On Your Mac OS X Startup Disk
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
At the prompt, type:
sudo periodic daily
Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
Repeat again, with command:
sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • I receive an error and iTunes shuts down every time I try to sync my iPhone

Every time I try to sync my iPhone, I receive an error and iTunes shuts down. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes at least 3 different times and still no luck. Any suggestions please.

Thanks for the answer. The sync process goes well until the last step,(5th) when iTunes try to syncing pictures. At that point I got an error message telling me that iTunes doesen’t work properly. “Windows tries to find a solution to the problem” ...and then the program shuts down. I remember that I tried to include videos in the Photo tab just before it all happend, so I think that is the issue here.
The problem is that i dont know how to uncheck include videos option since the program stops working. Is it something i can do without having my iPhone connected? I Saw that some have installed older versions of iTunes to go around the problem and if that solves it all, at least for now... where can I download it?
    Thanx in advance. M

Error 999 is shutting down my yahoo mail, someone suggested I "upgrade my Adobe"will this help and whaat should I do?
    E-mail me [email protected]

Your suggestion of breaking up the export to pdf into sections of pages was excellent. I don't know why I didn't think of it...maybe because I was in panic mode.
For anyone else who experiences this problem, I exported 50-page sections to pdf with no problem. I now have 7 hi-res pdfs, but that's no problem. The printer should have no problem dealing with it. No error messages came up.
The only thing I can think of is that InDesign couldn't export that many documents (148) in the book palette to hi-res pdf, and it has no error message available to explain the cause—either outside ID's ability to process or out of memory, even though I have 16G of RAM.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • When I try to photomerge there is an error and photoshop shuts down

when I try to photomerge there is an error and photoshop shuts down

I'm flabbergasted by this, as I've found just he opposite - that Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 does the job better and more reliably than any prior version.
I'm using PC.  I wonder if it could be a platform-specific problem.
Just for fun while typing this I just stitched a 26221 x 4777 pixel pano of a marina directly from raw files (something I could not do reliably from Photoshop CS5 - I always had to convert the files first).  Such an image is particularly challenging as the surface of the water changes completely from shot to shot.  It finished successfully in just a couple of minutes.

Well, after some thought, I did a 'safe boot', did a disk verify and repair in Disk Utility, repaired permissions in DU and had the same problem I'd mentioned in post.
SO, I went back in (safe boot.........that is, hold down start button, then 'shift') and went to applications and removed or uninstalled any apps that I thought might be interferring with the re-boot or, specifically, with my being unable to sign in with my p/w.........(at the first key stroke, it would crash and give the 'error' message)....I had both Webroot and Dashlane installed that I thought could interfere with password recognition (Webroot protects from viruses, et all and Dashlane is a password codifying appl.) I took out whatever else I thought might not be friendly and, guess what ?? When I signed out of 'safe' mode, and rebooted normally, it worked.........and has been working properly for 3-4 hrs now, so guess it's good-to-go..........seems like it...........hope this helps anyone with the same problem I'd had...........no need to visit "genius bar" some 55 miles from here............guess us mid-seventies guys ain't too old for learnin'...........G'Day, Mates !!

  • CS2 gives login error message and shuts down automatically

    Hi,
I hope someone can direct me to a quick fix for this because I just shot a wedding and need to be editing ASAP. I turned on PhotoShop CS2 and after loading it gives me the error message saying somehting to the effect of "Your username, login, organization, or serial key is missing or invalid. Photoshop must shut down". My copy is registered, and I have the loging info and serial , but I cannot do anything at all in the program. It doesn't give an option to re-enter my info. It just shuts itself down. I use it all the time and have had it on this computer since 06 so I have no idea why it's doing this now. Any help tonight would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

System specs, please. Is CS2 installed on a 64 bit operating system?

  • Windows Error after automatic shut down

My notebook shuts itself down automatically when it is left unattended.
It seems to be hibernating and I have pressed the ON switch to turn it off.
When I turn it on again, I get a Windows Error, the one with the "Send Report/Don't Send Report"
    message.
Can anyone tell me what is causing this?

    Hi Ivan25,
I am running XP Pro, the notebook came with Vista but I downgraded to XP Pro so that I could run some legacy software.
I think it has to do with the power saving features or maybe the screensaver kicking in or a combination of both.
It happens after the notebook has been left unattended for a while and then shuts down. I have tried tweaking the settings
but there are so many and it is not clear (to me) from the documentation what exactly the settings do.
As I use the notebook mainly connected to mains, I am wondering whether I should turn off the power saving features.

  • Unknown error {-53} Computer shut down

My computer shuts down while updating my ipod. Gives me an unknown error {-53} and sends my computer all wonky. I then have to reboot and start the mess all over again. What to do?

    Hello Peter,
I already have the new BIOS you sent me.  The problem persists.  Toshiba has no Authorized Service for computers where I live (Brazil) as far as I can see on their site, which I can't understand since it is a global company.  So, I can not use my business computer now.  Apparently, I either have to ship it to the States (which will cost me more than the computer is worth, and I'm better off buying a new one of a brand that takes care of its customers globally), or I have to try and find someone here who thinks they might be able to discover the problem and fix it.  Any suggestions?

  • Error message when shutting down

I'm getting a message that says tss.exe is preventing your computer from shutting down. What do I do to fix this? I have to manually shut down.

    Hi Jerry,
You have helped me before and I'm trying to help my husband on his computer.  We have this same tss.exe error message.  I'm also having another problem and am wondering if this tss.exe could be causing it.  I was trying to download a program from Abbottdiabetescare.com so he can monitor his blood sugars.  When it is almost finished loading, it comes up with an error message that says "another installation is taking place, please finish that installation first" or something like that.  I got on the phone with their tech support but they couldn't help me at all.  They said it had to be some process on the computer causing it to not be able to finish.  Is it this tss.exe?  If so, can I just get rid of it?  I have no clue what a service station does, but it sounds fairly important?  Can you please advise me?  His computer is a Toshiba  Satellite L355-S7915.  It runs on Vista.  Thanks!  Judy

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.
