Gray-scale shifting between CS3 programs

Recently I have been playing with making inkjet contact negatives for traditional printing and decided to build some gray-scale charts for testing.
I built my first chart in Indesign as tints of K-values and exported to a jpeg. I opened the exported jpeg file in Photoshop. I measured all of the charts values in Photoshop was was surprised to see a 2-5% shift in values.
Going back to the file I tried exporting as a PDF, reading the values
in Photoshop I got the same 2-5% shift.
Trying once again I exported as an EPS and opened the file in
Illustrator. Reading the values in Illustrator I also found a 2-5%
shift.
Finding these value shifts I recreated the document again in Indesign
as RGB black values. Exported via the different methods listed and
Checked the values. Still had the 2-5% shifts in all the values.
Trying again, I built a chart in illustrator as an RGB document with
values of K. I copied the chart and pasted the information as pixels
into photoshop. Reading the values everything seemed right on the
money. But after checking each value on the chart some of the values
were off. The values are correct in Illustrator but not in Photoshop.
for example in this last file 20%K reads as 25%K, 25%k reads as 25%k,
85%k reads as 86%k there are about 6 values that shifted.
Anyone know why gray-scale values are not staying the same across the
different CS3 programs?
I have also tried the file on a friend's MAC with the same results.

Peter,
I did try RGB color space in Illustrator with assigned K Values; I got a strange shift where most values were exact and some were shifted to a higher value. Unlike straight out of Indesign where the values were almost all increased by 2-5%.
I know that Indesign doesn't do Gray scale profiles. I consider anything gray scale when it's a value of K or values of RGB (percents of 0R0G0B or 10R10G10B)If you have a chart built as percents of RGB or CMYK values you should see the same percents of RGB or CMYK values in photoshop or in illustrator, I get an increase of value by 2-5%.
I have the same RGB and CMYK color space for all three programs so the values should be the same for all three. I'm viewing this as a value issue I'm sure I would find the same shifts in indevitual CMYK or RGB colors as well. (I'll try checking single RGB and CMYK values when I get a change to show the shifts there)

  • Big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 and Program Monitor

I get a big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 on Vimeo/Youtube and Quicktime X and Program Monitor.
There are quite a few posts on Quicktime gamma issues, but there seem to be no solutions and the other editors I know don't seem to have this problem.
I know there will be a bit of a shift but this is MASSIVE. At the moment I add a whole extra adjustment layer to all my clips to get it approximately right, but ofcourse this does not solve the issue nor does it give proper results.
Please do not reply with the "You need a real reference monitor via SDI etc etc ..."
By my logic on the same screen the program monitor should resemble what is going to be the final result in a relevant player like Quicktime X which all normal apple consumers use to watch their films.  I know VLC and Mpeg streamclip gives different results, but mostly when playing Quicktime/h264 files Quicktime will play it thus average users ( the people I'd like to downwload/buy my films )will watch it in Quicktime.
Furthermore, Quicktime X's gamma/color looks very similar to the image I get on Youtube or Vimeo - which is where all my current work is going. I'm not outputting to boradcast or DVD etc.
Strangely enough the MPEG 2 stuff I've done for DVD matches the Youtube output with the Program monitor.
    What am I doing wrong?
I have a Dell 2711 wide Gamut Display which is calibrated with an SPyder 3 Elite using its full colour gamut ( close to 90% of Adobe RGB - thus bigger than sRGB or Rec709) Could Premiere be ignoring the calibration in the Program monitor and making the image values 16-235 and then Quicktime uses all  values 0-255? If so, how can I fix this?
Any help will be much appreciated!

I know this has been a while so hopefully you found some help by now, but maybe this will help anyone stumbling across this.
What people seem to be missing in what you are asking is... this is the same file, on the same monitor, but with a different appearance in different software.  It is not a question of whether the overall monitoring is GOOD, and it is not a matter of hardware settings (as that would most likely propogate across all software) it is that it is not CONSISTENT side by side on the very same monitor.
I had very similar issues that really seemed to get worse when we got new monitors, which is what lead me to chime in here.  The monitors were also wide gamut displays.
    The problem is likely this...
    1. The difference being shown are the difference between software that properly color manages (i.e. Premier or After Effects) and software that does not (i.e. Quicktime or some web browsers)
    2. The reason it is so severe is that the wide gamut monitors are able to show many more colors and thus the difference between the managed and unmanaged software is much more exagerrated than on regular gamut monitors.
I found this great link that helped calm my nerves and helped me get handle on much of what is going on.
    http://www.artstorm.net/journal/2009/07/color-management-wide-gamut-dell-2408/
Now that is not to say that the 0-255/16-235 issue is not also involved here.  It is definitely possible that a specific codec or compressor is part of the problem, but it sounds like it starts with the color management issue first.
    I hope this helps.

  • Difference between intensity and gray scale value

Hi I am a new learner of NI vision, please bare with me.
    1. I am quite confused by the terms of light intensity and gray scale value of pixels. Can anyone explain the difference to me? Or are they totally same thing?
    2. I am currently processing a Grayscale (I16) image file. The bit depth of the image is 12 Bits. But I saw someone used IMAQ Histograph with the Number of Classes set as 8192(13 Bit), don't know why.
    Thanks, Jane

    Hello Jane,
    1. Correct, gray scale and intensity are the same thing.
    2. The number of calsses one selects is a judgement call.  By increasing or decreasing the number of classes the more or less granular the histogram becomes.  Without some context I cannot speculate as to why someone would use 8192 classes.

  • Color ID doc prints MOST elements in gray scale.

Please help.  I'm at the end of my rope.  Deadline looming.
I have an ID document that is ALL color.  When I go to print it, no matter if it's set for ID color management or printer color management, most elements of the page come out in gray scale.  It's a perfect representation of the document, only in grays.  Oddly, there are elements that print in color.  Even weirder, one object from an AI file will print in perfect color, but another object from the same AI file into the same ID doc will print gray.
Everything is CMYK.  I even use Bridge to control colors between programs.  I cannot figure this out.
    Any advice?
ps... not sure it matters, but I am printing on an HP cp2025dn.  Windows 7.  CS5.

  • Gray scale color table

I want to make a picture out of an 8-bit unsigned integer 2D matrix of data. I can successfully do that using the "draw unflattened pixmap" function. However, it requires a color map. If you don't wire the color map, it uses the default labview color map. I want to use a gray scale color map (numbers between 0 and 255 corresponding to colors ranging from white to black). I am not sure how to make this color map and implement it. I appreciate any help.

The problem seems to be solved this way. Although it seemed to work (I got a gray scale image), I am not sure if what I have done is technically correct (if there is a better way of doing it). If someone wants to comment on it, I would appreciate.
Yes, this is technically correct (top). (Typically you can do it once, then right-click the indicator and "change to constant" and delete the loop code.)
You might also flatten the rgb tool code to the diagram (bottom). This has the advantage that the entirel loop will be calculated once at compile time and internally folded into a constant so the loop actually never spins during execution of the program (See also). (Of course this particular loop is trivial and nothing to worry about, performance wise. )

  • Gray scale photos images are different but should be the same; help?

I send a gray scale image from Lightroom (Edit with ...) and it opened CS4 photoshop.
    I made a blank document , 11x14".
I used Windows/arrange/ tile to view the blank and the gray scale image. I tired various methods of bringing the gray scale image to the blank one (move tool, select all and move, copy and paste). Each time, I did this within seconds of each other (I made no changes to fill, opacity, and I used Normal). I brought the image in twice so I could print out the SAME image twice on the larger 11x14 at Sams club in order to use the Epson 7800 printer and not the old wet process on the Fugi machine. One image is darker(lighter) than the other every time. I even tried another image and I got two different exposures.
I wonder if it it only happens with the grayscale images? Perhaps it is a problem coming from Lightroom 2.5?
I did a three image 16x20 and I didn't notice the difference - partly because they were three differenct images in color. I will try two color images from the same file tomorrow.
Any thoughts? I haven't found a possible setting problem that would have been applied between the operations.

    Paulo,
Thanks. I was ready to believe the monitor idea but I still have some reservations.
I don't doubt what you said about the pixels (sounds correct to me).
    Why?
I tried another monitor and the images I attached also look like the top one is darker (vertically).
Also, the same is true if I scrolled the images. It seems to me that I should see a difference as I slowly scroll the image vertically. I didn't see a difference.
    Read on please.
At any rate (I long for a CRT - my 21" crapped out last year), I am using  two SAMSUNG screens, the
one attached to the main computer is the Syncmaster T220 - a well rated
monitor; as far as I knew , read and had friends who recommended them.
The other I just tried is attached to the second computer a couple of feet away. It is the syncMaster T240HD.
So, if it is an LCD monitor problem, it is with both and the same
company. I would think I would have read some bad reports about these
    LCDs?
Also, wouldn't the color images also be different when presented the same way? (they aren't).
However, I went back to the original T220 LCD display and moved an image in to a blank one as before, then did the control J to copy the layer, and the images we different again. But, I zoomed in more than usual and scrolled the images and they were lighter at the bottom of the screen and darker at the top of the screen!!!!!!
That is good news and bad news! $$$$$$
If it is the monitor problem, then both images should print as the same.????
Secondly, the display (LCD) attached to the machine at Sams showed the same difference between the two images. AND, I recall that the display is also a Samsung (I will check that tomorrow).
What a bunch of coincidences! I guess I have to search the web for some Samsung answers? and contact the company?
I want to explore as much on my end as possible.
Hunt and another suggested the Control-J to avoid the problem by copying the layer. That didn't work either.
I suppose I could tweak one of the images after bringing them in but I don't know how (I clicked the layer and I wasn't able to do anything - like lighten that image).
Again, thanks for the help. I think the question maybe answered.
I will send the screen capture shortly.

  • "instant boot" to gray scale, then full use

    28Apr2015
    iMac: 21.5, late 2013, OSX 10.9.5
I occasionally disconnect my iMac and store it or disconnect it when lightning is threatening (we live in Florida). Lately, the last couple of months, when setting up the mac again out of storage or disuse, I hit the power-on button and the screen immediately displays in gray scale everything: the wallpaper, all the folder/file icons, and a progress bar below. In less than 30seconds, the color snaps back, and all files, and programs that were launched before I shut down are now “instantly” available. Please explain what is going on.

  • How to convert the graph to gray scale

    Hi
I am using MS 1.1 version, I need to take the print of the graphs which is provided by NI. The problem here is that i need the GUI to show the graph in multicolor environment, but when i am going to print it on a paper, i should be able to convert into gray scale. Can you kindly suggest me what should be done to achieve this?
Is there any features which present in MS which can help an user to decide this conversion at run time.
    Thanks & Regards
    Sandy

    Hi Sandy,
I hope you are doing well today! What is MS? You should be able to use the invoke nodes of the graph controls to export an image and do some manipulations to it. Can you be more specific as to what you want to do and what kind of programs you are going to use?

  • Gradient only showing gray scale

I am trying to create a colored button in IL CS3, and when I open the gradient box, I am only getting a gray scale option- no colors to choose from. If I go to Color Palette, I can apply only a solid color. Back to Gradient, still only gray...arrgh. I am new to Illustrator but this seems too basic. In tutes I am reading, the Gradient opens with a color palette too. How do I get that? thnx!

You can drag a swatch on to the gradient slider to set a color or select one of the sliders, go up to color--set you color space in the pull down menu and enter your values there.

To get better help sooner, post a SSCCE (Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable that shows your present approach in converting to grayscale. For the image, preferably link to a web resource so that members here can run your program without modification.
Also, you could search the net for "color to gray scale algorithm" where you will find many algorithms, some of which will undoubtedly provide you with a solution.

  • Changes, or loss of quality when changing from Indexed Colour to RGB or Gray Scale?

I am using a canon scanner 700 to scan old photographs and plans/maps for high resolution publication. The plans and photographs are both in colour and in bl/wh and grayscale. I usually scan in gray scale unless its an important, coloured plan.
I am unable to scan through c5 for some reason. Its a 64 bit dell M4400, W7. All legal, all working fine.
I use the program canon supplies (Canon MP Navigator EX 2.1) and choose grayscale, 1200 dpi. No problem so far. Output seems great when I open in photoshop.
However, the files open in Indexed Colour mode, and not grey scale as I scanned them in.
    My questions are :
    a) why does it open in indexed colour mode?
    b) is there any loss of information if I simply change them into grey scale?
I need the files in high res for professional publication in large format, but also for analysis of dimensions. So I cannot afford ANY transformation or loss of info.
Hope somebody can help me out!

  • How can I save the 12-bits gray scale image ?

    Software & Hardware
    NI-IMAQ Vision 6.0
    NI-IMAQ for 1394 2.0.0
    Hamamatsu C4742-95
    I acqured the 12-bits gray scale image (Format7 , 640X512 size , 12bits) successfully.
And CWIMAQViewer display the correct image of which the range is from 0(black) to 4096(white).
But, I don't find the way to save this image with 12-bits format T.T
Always, CWIMAQVision object save this image to 8-bit format.
I tested all formats - tiff, bmp, aip, png.
I think there are two possible problems.
    1. I dont't know the way to save the 12bits gray scale image. :{
    2. I dont't know the way to read the 12bits gray scale image that saved correctly.
How can I save and load the 12-bits gray scale image ?
What is the solution for this problem T.T ?

    Hello,
I would recommend taking a look at the "ReadImage" Visual Basic project for more information on setting the image type and saving the image to file.  When you run the program, make sure you select 16 bit for your image.  You can also add another button to this example for saving the image.  Within the click subroutine for the button, you can add the line:
    CWIMAQVision1.WritePNGFile CWIMAQViewer1.Image, "C://image.png"
This method will save the image in the viewer as a png file.  As long as it was loaded as a 16 bit image, it should save all of the 12 bit information into the file.  You could then test the new image by loading it using the example (you can see the pixel values by right-clicking on the viewer and selecting Settings>>Show Image Info.  The pixel value displayed in the info bar corresponds to the mouse position.

  • Help! All CS3 programs continuously crash!!

I need help - all my CS3 programs have begun crashing! It's happened more frequently since installing Lepoard - but now its unbearably happening.
I've called Adobe and was told that I can't get tech support because CS4 is now live - though Max was cool and suggested that I reset preferences (Ctrl+Option+Apple+Shift).
Despite that quick fix - these programs continue to crash! NEED HELP PLEASE!

    Neil,
Adobe called me on Wednesday stiil couls not figure out the problem, told me to go to Apple. So , I went to apple, upgraded my Ram to 4GB, full diagnostics, and did an archive reinstall.
Worked great for 2 days. Thought I was in the clear, then today, I opened photoshop to open a few very small jpgs. (I had firefox open) Then all of a sudden Adobe installer show up in my dashboard and shows percentage numbers like it is installing something or getting ready to, and photoshop crashes. The adobe updater asks me if I want to install updates, I said no and cancelled out. All along I have been telling adobe that I think the problem has something to do with my registration. On all of my console crashes reports, adobe crashes right after all of theses notes about registration. I have had to re-register my adobe at least 3 times. The 1st time this all happened a technician told me I somehow had an educational copy, made me uninstall and then install a volume license with a new serial number. I told him none of this made sense as I bought a factory sealed CS3 Design Premiun form the apple store. I also told him I didn't want a volume license, I wanted what I purchased. He told me I had to do it. So I did and it didn't work. So the next technician I got, said that was crazy and she can't believe he made me do that, and that my original copy of CS# and serial number were fine and then had me uninstall that and reinstall mine. Naturally, every time I uninstall and reinstall adobe prompts me to register, which I do. But I feel like either adobe has some conflict and kicks me off because it thinks my registration is invalid or Adobe is conflicting with something on my computer. Which no- one can figure out- mean while I sill can't get any work done. Everyone who has looked at my computer said this is crazy, my computer is fine and can easily handle what i do, I don't have anything crazy on here that is supposed to conflict and I triple checked before I bought everything and have multiple times since. I still can not get any work done and am desparate!! Adobe is closed over the weekend and I have to be able to work on Monday.

The 24-bit is a color image with 8-bits per color channel per pixel (interleaved, if I remember correctly).  It is not a 24-bit gray-level, so I don't think it will work for you.  I believe the IMAQ library (a LabVIEW add-on) will handle 16-bit gray-scale, if you can get a copy.
As a native LabVIEW workaround, you could also split your image into two 8-bit images, with one image representing the high bytes, the other the low.  You could then combine them when you do the analysis, if your analysis program is capable of this.
