Gray screen and can't do anything.

I have a 2008 MacBook pro. A few days ago I did a forced shutdown and now all I get at startup is a gray screen. I am unable to do a safe boot, boot off the installation disk, single user mode or verbose mode. All attempts to do any of those things did not lead to any change to the gray screen. The only thing I can get my MacBook to do is zapping the pram, but that didn't make a difference. Any help would be more than greatly appreciated. I do have everything backed up to my time capsule so i have no problem if I need to reformat the harddrive. Thanks in advance for the help.

Boot from your SL DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now reinstall OS X. This will not erase your hard drive. You will not lose your files.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

That is not normal. Very few apps are actually running in the background. What troubleshooting steps have you taken? Have you reset the phone by simultaneously pressing the Home and power buttons until the apple appears? Restored from back up? Restored as new?

  • Connected to internet but have gray screen and can't access web pages

I am connected to the internet. I am able to search via google but when results come up the screen is gray and I acan't select any of the results?

Always a good idea to close Safari in your multitasking menu as well by double-clicking the home button and holding down an icon until they have the minus signs.  Safari and Mail both seem to start to get glitchy if they are running in the background for a while.

  • When I try to download something, I get a black screen, and can't download ANYTHING.

I tried to download a program from the internet using Firefox, and it gets to the .exe screen, goes black, and doesn't actually start the download....anyone know why?

The Adobe Add On is causing the problem. I have Adobe Reader on my system, so this solution allows me to use this fix:
    1. Open Firefox.
    2. Go to TOOLS.
    3. Go to ADD-ONS.
    4. Select the PLUGINGS icon at the top.
    5. Disable the ADOBE ACROBAT plugin.
    6. Close ADDONS windown.
    7. Select PDF link; Firefox should download and allow Adobe Reader to open for you (no longer opens in Firefox).

    Hello Lola51,
I would be concerned as well if my iPod was unresponsive.  I found a resource that I think would help in a situation like this.
I recommend following the steps in this troubleshooting assistant:

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Macbook Pro boots to blank gray screen and cursor

    Hello,
I downloaded the "time machine update" and now my macbook pro will not boot, it stops at a gray screen and cursor.
I have tried safe boot, Disk Warrior, clearing NVPRAM or whatever.
    Any ideas on anything else?
Question, how long does a time machine restore take?
    Thanks

    Changing your iTunes Store country:
Sign in to the account for the iTunes Store region you'd like to use. If already signed in to an account, from Settings, choose Store and then View Account.
Tap "Change Country of Region" and follow the on screen process of changing your region. Agree to the terms and conditions for the region if necessary, and then change your billing information.

    Help appreciated.

Well, this is back with vengeance.
I've tried removing the Telestream software and the BlackBerry software and I still get a blank screen randomly. The last one happened last night when I tried to download AppCleaner to make sure all files from the above programs had been removed. As soon as I clicked 'download' it went blank and froze.
This is persistent, and the annoying thing is that I can't get it to restart when I want. I tried pulling out the power cord for a while, several PRAM resets, Safe Mode, try to get into recovery disk to check the drive, etc, etc.
Sometimes a few PRAM resets seem to work, other times it will go into the recovery disk, but most of the time it just seems to randomly boot up again after not working for ages. I can't find a pattern and I've tried this many times.
At the moment I can't get it working. I've just removed some Crucial RAM that was installed to see if that helped, but to no avail.
Bugging the life out of me.
