  • I upgraded my 3rd generation ipad to ios 6.0.1 and now am experiencing various issues.  Neither Pages or Numbers will open.  I just see a gray screen that says Pages or Numbers at the top and all of my documents are gone.

I upgraded my "new ipad" (the 3rd generation I think) to ios 6.0.1 and now am experiencing various issues.
1- Neither Pages or Numbers will open.  I just see a gray screen that says Pages or Numbers at the top and all of my documents are gone. The icon that allows me to create a new document also does not appear.  I went to icloud.com to see whether my documents still existed, which brings me to the 2nd problem.
2- It appears that all of my Pages documents are still on icloud, but all of my Numbers documents are gone.  There were only about 10, but I access 2 of them nearly every day, so this is a big issue for me.
I went into Settings and all of the icloud information is correct and it "Documents & Data" is on.  When I look at the storage, I see the Pages documents but not the Numbers ones.  The next thing I did was turn my ipad off and back on, but this didn't fix anything.  Since my Pages documents are still on icloud, I then tried to delete the Pages app from the ipad so that I could reinstall it, which resulted in the 3rd problem.
3- I cannot delete any apps.  I can get all of the icons to shake and the small x IS available, but everything freezes when I click it.  I can't do anything at that point except reset the ipad or wait until it eventually restarts itself.  I've tried this with Pages as well as multiple other apps, all with the same result.  I've also tried downloading a new app (which worked fine) and then deleting that one, but I got the same result.
3a- A small related issue to this that I am far less concerned about is that when the ipad restarts itself, it comes back on and the screen is really dark and I can barely make out what appears on the screen.  If I enter my password right away, it stays that way until I go into Settings - Brightness & Wallpaper and touch the brightness setting (although I'm not actually changing the setting because it already shows that the brightness is turned up a little over halfway).  If I don't enter my password right away and let it go completely dark, then click the home button, the brightness is fine.
So now I'm stuck.  My guess is that I will need to restore it, but wanted to check before I take that step.  Unfortunately, my laptop is on its deathbed so I haven't been synching my ipad to it and I fear my Numbers documents are gone forever.  I'd like to try everything I can to fix these issues before doing the restore in hopes that I can get the Numbers documents back.
Any suggestions for any or all of these problems?

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • I am not able to access the "Settings" on my iPad 3. I just get a gray screen for about 30 seconds and then the app shuts down. I am also unable to access the App store, iTunes, or any app requiring an internet connection. Any thoughts?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • TS2621 I have a gray screen on my ipad 1 when I press the mail icon. Can anyone help?

I have a gray screen on my ipad 1 when I press the mail icon. This situation just started this morning. Can anyone help?

Try closing the Mail app via the taskbar and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • How do I get itunes to add another ipad. Get gray screen.

How do I get itunes to add another ipad. The second ipad was set up on same computer as i am trying to manage music, but I get a gray screen and itunes won't allow me to manage any music, movies, aps, etc. all screens turn gray.

I'm afraid that the iTunes Store checks the feed when it gets round to it: as you've found it's usually in the order of 1-2 days, and there is nothing you can do to alter that.

Try rebooting the ipad by pressing and holding the on/off and home buttons simultaneously until the screen goes blank and you see the apple logo. It should take about 10-15 seconds to reboot.

  • Gray screen of death on third-gen iPad...

I'm caught in a bit of a circle and am needing a little help re if/how to get out of it. Hoping the community here might be able to help - or confirm that I'm out of luck.
My third-gen iPad gave me the gray screen of death this morning, while downloading an app from the app store. I'm unable to reboot from the iPad itself (more gray screen, before shutting off). Based on the advice provided in the archives, my next step was a restore. Unfortunately, iTunes wants the passcode - which, of course, I'm unable to enter.
Is there a workaround for this that anyone has found to get past this particular challenge?
Not that I'm looking for an excuse for an updgrade....

Why are you unable to provide the passcode?  You are using the computer's iTunes, aren't you?
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Why does a gray screen come over my iPad then the iPad freezes?

When using my iPad a gray screen comes over the screen & the iPad freezes.

First time i heard of this. Is it the same screen that you need to slide to open? Have you tapped it like you need to do when it's going to sleep? Try a reset. Next i'd be heading to the Apple Store.  Good luck. Please report back  with the cure.

  • I downloaded a book on iBook and when I opened it all I got was a gray screen and I can't go back to my library. Help! How do I get rid of the gray screen and go back to my library?

I downloaded a book on iBook but when I tried to open it all I got was a empty gray screen. I can't do anything. How do I go back to my library? There are no icons, nothing.... Help

If tapping the book doesn't give a button at the top left to go back to your Library, then try closing the iBooks app completely and see if it works when you re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with iBooks 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iBooks app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Safari will not surf web..just get a gray screen...very frustrating!

When we start up our Ipad 2, open safari all we then get is a gray screen and we are not able to tap or move any part of the screen...no response at all..safari will not surf the web or do anything....Our connections are good as well as our internet since the desktop computer gets online fine....

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Have gray screen and unresponsive iBooks 2 program upon downloading Wilson textbook on life. No way to turn pages.  When using new York times app it shuts down and goes to home screens.

Loaded iBooks 2, downloaded e.o. Wilson textbook on life.  Opened book and only get gray screen without any way to turn pages.  As top menu does not appear cannot even switch to another book.  This occurred on 3rd time of trying to open book,   First two times would result in iPad switching back to home screen.  This last issue also happens when trying to open new york times app.

Shut down all programs that are running in the background.
    1. Double-click the Home button to see Apps in background
    2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minu sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close program
    4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo
Suggest you perform Step 1 to 3 at the end of every day.

  • Safari seems to be locked.  Gray screen covers whole screen. You can search but you can not open any of the sights.  Other apps requiring internet work fine.

I cannot open any websites in Safari on my iPad 2.  There is a gray screen that covers everything.  I can launch a search, it searches and gives me a list but then I cannot open any of them with a click.  Can you help me?

I am having the exact same problem.  Let me know if you figured it out

  • G62 Display - Gray Screen

Motherboard fried, and I replaced it. Worked perfectly. Battery is dead, and will not charge. When power is pulled computer completely dies, or I must shut it down. One evening I had hdmi plugged in, closed the comuter sisplay to sleep. Woke up and without shutting down, yanked the hdmi, and power cord. Went to power it up at work, and could only see a gray screen. I removed all power, and batt, held down the power button for 20 seconds, and it rebooted with screen functioning. This worked for several days, but no longer fixes the gray screen, which appears permanent. I can attach the hdmi or serial cable to a projector or tv and also use an ipad app to view and use my computer, but the laptop display is always gray.
I have done repair, and start up diagnostics, all checked.
I have looked for backlight illumination using a flashlight, but could see no residual or hidden image lurking in the background of the screen.
The notebook is out of warranty.
Do not want to replace display if another option is available.
    Please help! Thanks

  • Gray Screening Problem

Were having some technical difficulties with are Ipad app. When we test are application there are gaps of certain pages that don’t appear and it states, “waiting to download” on the page. Originally we tested the app and it worked fine so then we sent it to apple and then after we downloaded the app there were gray screen on many of the pages.  So I turned the retail version (on the bundler manager) to free to test it on the adobe viewer and the same pages were missing but instead of just grey screens it  also says, “waiting to upload”. So I wasn't sure if it was because the file size was to larger (which its around 630MB) or maybe there was a stacking issue. So I down sized some files and made the document 520MB. But still the same issue, I have no clue what the deal is. If anyone has any knowledge on how to fix this we would greatly appreciate it.

    Emin,
I will chim on with you to tell you that I encountered the same problem and raise the problem to adobe.
I encountered the problem when downloading a published folio into a branded viewer (similar setup as you have) and the problem disappeared after re-publishing the same folio again. But other than that, I could not say when the problem occured.

  • MacBook pro gray screen

    Hi guys,
I need your help for my MacBook pro...
    Mine is 2.66ghz intel core duo (13inch DDR3) MC375LL...
I had upgrading my RAM to 8GB from Crucial and I'm using the latest OS Lion...
It just happened this morning when I try to turn on my Mac...
It took a while to wait but still couldn't log in...
It's only display gray screen with blinking folder picture with a question mark on it...
Through my iPad, I browsed apple support, read blogs from the community on apple, mac rumors and even YouTube just to find the right direction of how to fix my Mac...
I can't do safe mode, reseting SMC is not working either...
Tried To repair it through disk utility or even uninstall it...still didn't work!
    I did fsck thing...it still didn't work...
I had enough and went to Genius Bar just try to solve this problem...
The technician at Genius Bar ended up with the same thing like mine and said that I had hard drive problem...
Because when he tried to diagnostic, he said that his equipment can't recognize or read my Hard Drive...
He suggested that I'm getting a new one...
Does anybody can help me with my problem?
If I have to get the new hard drive, how can I get some content from my old hard drive that I didn't backup yet?
    Thanks
    Son

Which version of OS X are you running? If your machine came with an installation disc, try booting from that. If you're running Lion or Mountain Lion, try booting into teh Recovery partition by holding down the Command and R keys on boot.
If you can't get past the gray screen using either method, you're just going to have to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP. Could be a hardware issue.
