Gray screen of death.... Please help.

Wife's 27" iMac is giving us the gray screen of death. I tried everything I could:
Command + Option +P + R
Holding Option at boot to try Recovery
Command + Option + R (Internet Recovery)
Holding shift to get to Safe Mode
Inserting install disc while holding "C"
Installed Mountain Lion on my Flashdrive to try to boot from that….
ALL FAILED. Any ideas, guys? Please help. This Mac is just a little over a year old. just out of the one year warranty.

Thanks for telling us everything you did. However, you haven't given us any information on what the computer did. So there's not much to go on except a gray screen. Assuming the drive has not failed:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
  4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you are not able to perform the above then the drive has most likely failed and will have to be replaced. Take the computer in for service..

  • Blue Screen of Death Please Help!!!

Hi Everyone. I'm having some major issues with my iPhone 5s (16GB updated to iOS 8.1.1). Literally every time I so much as look at the phone it restarts and gives me the Blue Screen of Death. This happens randomly. At one time it was just a minor annoyance (as it only happen occasionally), but now it is unbearable. My phone is on a constant cycle of Black Screen, Apple Screen, and then Blue Screen.
Before you ask, yes I have reset all of the settings, yes I have tried holding down the home button and the lock button, and yes I have tried wiping my entire phone (in the past) to get rid of this problem.
Please help! Nothing I have done or tried to do is fixing this problem.
Thank you so much in advanced.

If you have restored the device as new and tested it without using your backup and it is still malfunctioning, then you need to make an appointment with the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service provider, depending on your location, and have the hardware checked.

  • BIOS Update causes Blue Screen of Death - PLEASE HELP

    PLEASE HELP!!
After recently reformatting a Lenovo 3000 N200 (XP SP3), I downloaded the Lenovo Care (or whatever it's called), which downloaded a whole lot of updates, drivers....
The last thing that was downloaded was a BIOS Update. Before flashing and reprogramming the BIOS, the program created a backup of the old BIOS.
Since the BIOS Update, I can no longer turn on the laptop without the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). When I try to turn it on, it shows the Lenovo startup screen, then goes to the "previous attempt was interrupted" menu (the menu where you can choose 'Safe Mode'...), and no matter which option I choose, it starts to show the XP startup screen (with the progress bar), for 1/2 a second, then displays the BSOD for 1/2 a second (too fast too even read what it says or even get the error code).
What can I do to remedy the situation? Can I somehow access the backup of the old BIOS to restore it? Or is there something else I can do?
BTW, When I click F1 on the Lenovo startup screen (to get into the BIOS settings) it shows the BIOS version to be "68ET35WW (V3.03) - which is apparently the latest version for that laptop

  • Blue screen of death - please help me!

Please help! So far Google search results have been unhelpful...
My iPhone 5c blue screened this evening while I was browsing through Facebook. Unlike most of the blue screen search results on Google, my phone did not reboot after this, the screen just turned black. Every attempt to reboot it by holding down both home and power button have resulted in the Apple logo appearing, it vibrating a few times, going to lock screen and then blue screening again within seconds.
I've tried a forced system restore via iTunes, the phone blue screened again while doing this. I'm unsure of what to do. Is this a common problem?

There is a step somewhere around pages 11-13 in the bootcamp install guide that mentions reformatting the partition. Did you do that?
If you have any non-standard/non-Apple hardware attached, disconnect it before installing windows.

    Hi,
In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Preferred sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers, download managers, etc.
4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains
much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best
choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps are much larger in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
After doing that, to learn how to share the link to the file if you are unaware, please visit the following link -
Share files and folders and change permissions and view 'Get a link'.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUpUtilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use. With this said, if you've run such software, you will need to allow the system to crash once again to generate a crash dump.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all
    drives'.
    3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system
    log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.

    Patrick

  • White Screen of Death, Please Help

    Hey Guys ;
I have an imac 2010 with windows installed on it (No MacOS is installed). today I updated the windows and shut it down and after a few hours I turned it on but now I am only getting the white screen ! it doesnt boot up at all ! I dont know if this problem is related to windows update or not. it may be only luck that this has happened after updating my windows.
I tried to boot it from CD or a flash drive , but holding the option key or d or c doesnt do anything. when holding the option key , even the mouse cursor doesnt appear !
the only thing that works is reseting the PRAM , when I hold the option and command and p and r , I can hear the second chime , but still it doesnt boot up. it is why I am sure my keyboard is working. also I tried to reset the SMC but no results.
also I tried command + r and command + v , but no luck ! only white screen.
I dont understand why I dont get any kind of output ! even if my hdd is broken I should be able to boot from a CD , right ? or at least it should show some kind of error message or logs. but only white screen.
do you have any suggestions ?

Yes , I was using the original grey DVD. I tried holding all possible keys ! nothing worked.
Eventually I found out my HDD is dead , I opened my iMac and disconnected my HDD and now it can boot from CD. but the problem is that it shouldnt work this way. I have had a PC for many years and even if HDD dies , you can go to bios or boot from other devices and etc. it shouldnt cause a white screen of death !
may be apple is doing this intentionally so it can charge people for fixig their imacs ! it is not something complicated , it was just a dead HDD and I was getting no error messages or anything, Just a dead imac. thats frustrating.

  • Gray Screen of Death. HELP!!

    Powerbook G4 1.67
Screen went totally gray (no apple logo or anything else).
    Tried to rest PRAM, Nothing.
Tried moving RAM to a different port. Nothing.
Opened it up, and checked internal battery. Nothing.
A friend who is pretty good with Macs, thinks that it is either the RAM is gone or my logic board is dead.
    Thoughts?
Of course, my applecare plan is expired.
    Thanks in advance

It was going fine and then all the sudden it said there was a disk error and that I needed to press any key to reboot.
Are you sure the message said to press any key, or did it say "Hold the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button," as shown in About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages?
Did the disk error message occur while you were running Boot Camp Assistant (a Mac OS X application) or after you had restarted from your XP installer disc? Does your XP installer disc meet the Boot Camp 3 requirements, specifically that it is the 32 bit version of either Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later included?
You will probably have to restore the Mac's original software to recover from this, but knowing these things will help determine how to avoid the problem from reoccurring.

  • Gray screen of death at start up

    Hello all,
Today when i was downloading the latest updates for my mac and iTunes my system froze while trying to access my BAD hard drive. So i restart my mac and after the apple logo appeared the gray screen of death showed up. I tried every thing from PRAM reset to disk and permission repair. So please help me with this problem.
    Thank you

If you are on Mountain Lion you can boot from the Recovery Disk that is installed hidden from your internal HD. You can Use the Disk Utility from there to repair disk and you can also use that on OS re-installation of your ML.
"OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery System. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window."

  • IMac won't boot! (gray screen of death?)

    Hello,
I just had a kernel panic on my main iMac computer, so I had to restart it...
When it logged in automatically, it restarted again (by itself)...
Now, once it booted, I'm staring at the horrendous Gray Screen of Death/Doom...
No apple logo, no loading wheel, nothing... just a blank gray screen.
Please help! I have no idea how to fix this!
Thank you. All help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi mik.e245
Pop in the Install Disk 1 that came with your iMac and run disk repairs as described in the articles below:
    http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=3810
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html
Not always, but many times Kernal Panic's are associated with a ram issue's. If a ram module was recently added it may have become partially dislodged/unseated and needs to be reseated.
If your still having trouble run the Hardware Test from the same install disk as per this article.

  • Kernel Panics, Gray screen of death, and hard drives, oh my!

Last week, while performing multiple tasks on my G4, Safari froze up and completely locked up the entire computer. I rebooted by manually pushing the glowing power button the front of the tower. During reboot, I got the gray screen of death with the "you need to restart your macintosh... by holding down the power button for several seconds" message.
After a couple tries and getting that exact same gray screen of death, I started to worry about all my data.
I took both drives out of the G4 Quicksilver - one, a 500gb Barracuda Seagate (Master/bay 1), the other a 200gb Hitachi (slave/bay 2). I hooked them up to an older G4 and ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility on both of them. The master drive had serious (>34%) fragmentation, which has since been cleaned up. The slave drive was relatively fine.
    here's my current problem:
    When I hook up:
    1. Just the Master with no jumper pins, the drive runs fine, no problems, all settings and prefs are there, etc.
    2. Just the Master with the correct pin settings, I get the kernel panic screen of death
    3. The Master with correct pin settings and Slave with correct pin settings, kernel panic screen of death
    4. If I swap the Master and Slave, and make the correct pin settings, the booting process starts and then I get a light gray screen with the "ghostbusters/do not enter" circle.
I put the original Slave drive in an external HD firewire enclosure, and it will mount on the desktop after the original Master drive has booted up - BUT - if I have the external drive powered up before I boot the Master, I get a gray screen with nothing on it - no message, nothing but grayscreen.
I've backed up my critical data, but would like to get these two drives back into their normal operating Master/Slave relationship that served them well for the last couple years.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    New wrinkle:
This morning trying at boot up, the Mac chime sounded, the gray screen w/the apple logo appeared, and then the machine sounded like either the main fan or one of the two drives spun down. Shortly thereafter, I got the prohibitory sign again.
I rebooted and then got something completely different: a black screen with a small blinking vertical rectangle in the top left of the screen, with nothing else happening for a long time, so I manually rebooted and tried to boot into safe mode.
Trying to boot into safe mode gave me the chime, the apple logo, and then the sound of either the fan or drive spinning down and leaving me at the prohibitory sign once again.
Finally I option-booted to the slave drive and upon startup, received the following crash report, which might as well be in Swahili as far as my being able to make sense of it:

  • Gray screen of death ... macbook boot failure

Three weeks old and getting the gray screen of death. Power up works but MacBook just keeps trying to read a video disk I left in the ROM drive. Gray screen with nothing else (no processing circle, no apple logo, just a plain gray screen). I could hear the rom drive cycling.
I worked with support via telephone and their solutions failed also:
    1. power up, hold down the eject button (nada)
    2. power up, hold down the mouse button (nada)
    3. power up, hold down the apple key, the cntl key, the P and the R keys for two chimes (got the two chimes but nada)
Now it chimes when i start up but still sits there cycling the cdrom which has a movie disk in it.
The support rep asked me if there was a small extraction hole by the drive. HELLO: are you really Apple ??? On the new macbook?
The MacBook was delivered with 10.4.8. Wanting the large 10.4.9 update on CD for any future need, I downloaded the 10.4.9 intel combined update (larger than the other choice) and went with that not knowing which to use. However this was three weeks ago and the computer has been perfect. my session yesterday was perfect but I did 'brag' on the new macbook when a friend saw me using it. why does bragging cause boot failures? Murphy?/??????// HELP.
Black MacBook intel core 2 duo 120gb drive 2 gb memory   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

My apologies to everyone if I raised an alarm. The hardware (i.e. the MacBook) is fine and the problem was that I am a new user. I have to say that Apple Support was unprepared to address the issue but I did resolve it myself by accident. Here is the resolution:
I looked up the SMC reset instructions on the Apple Support site as a next step and the instructions said to try 3 things before doing the SMC:
    1. Force Quit (Option - Command - Escape)
    2. Restart (Control - Command - Power)
    3. Force Shutdown (hold down pwr button for 10 seconds
As a new user I could not know that the key with the Apple was the Command key, but I guessed since the words control and option were called out, it had to be the Apple key with the Squiggle.
I did each step but nada. I did get a different alert tone (lower pitch) after doing step 3. Each time I turned the computer off.
I then started over and tried again turning on the macbook from being off each time. I did step 1 and turned the machine off and then did step 2 and the computer came alive.
The system is just like I left it and the rom drive works fine. Again, my apologies to all you macbook users for raising any alarms. We are new to using Apple and have much to learn. I did not have any cheat sheets to work from so it took time. Many thanks for the responses.

  • Gray screen of death on third-gen iPad...

I'm caught in a bit of a circle and am needing a little help re if/how to get out of it. Hoping the community here might be able to help - or confirm that I'm out of luck.
My third-gen iPad gave me the gray screen of death this morning, while downloading an app from the app store. I'm unable to reboot from the iPad itself (more gray screen, before shutting off). Based on the advice provided in the archives, my next step was a restore. Unfortunately, iTunes wants the passcode - which, of course, I'm unable to enter.
Is there a workaround for this that anyone has found to get past this particular challenge?
Not that I'm looking for an excuse for an updgrade....

Why are you unable to provide the passcode?  You are using the computer's iTunes, aren't you?
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

    Hello polo-angulo,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the nature and scope of the issue you are describing. If you are saying that you are getting an error code (3004) when you try to restore your iPhone (because you could not remember your passcode), you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
