Gray screen shows up upon starting my macbook pro, it won't work

My Macbook pro starts up normally then appears a grey screen with a rotating white circle and no matter what I do, it won't work. How do I fix it without going into the store? I have the disks with me.

  • MacBook Pro charger won't work

My new macbook pro's charger stopped working. I tried switching outlets to see if it would work but it didn't. Also I noticed something strange, when I plug in the MacBook into different outlets the LED on the charger turns on for one second then doesn't work (Does anyone know why this happen and if there's a fix?). Also is there a way I can check if the problem is within the MacBook or the charger. I can't really go to an apple store so please don't say call apple or go to the store, and I dont have any other computers to check if the charger works on, thanks in advance. I hope there's a way to fix this problem. I tried cleaning the MagSafe place and tried SMC reset, anything else I can do?

If this is a new MacBook Pro, do you mean new to you since Apple no longer sells the MBP with Mac OS X 10.7.3  That would be at least a three year old machine.
If the Apple store is not an option, you will have to call Apple for help, try the AppleCare support number from http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 or start a service request by going to the ExpressLane at https://expresslane.apple.com

  • Gray Screen after I log in to MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I have got MacBookPro 2009 Model.
It was running fine till yesterday. I was watching a youtube video and I paused it and went away. After I came back the screen froze so I did the restart.
Initially, there was some issues with booting up. I used Use Single-User Mode to check disk, and disk is working fine.
But now after I log in I only see gray screen. No icon no logo nothing.
    Help Please...

    riteshkadu,
which version of OS X is on your MacBook Pro? Do you still have the two grey installation DVDs that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro?

  • Weird gray screen/freeze boot issue with 2008 Macbook Pro

Early 2008 MBP. Gray boot screen with apple logo and spinning gear freezes. Now for the odd part. In the background I can hear iChat log in, and I can see the associated account as available via Bonjour so I know that behidn the scenes, the laptop is indeed logging in and launching the desktop. I also managed to remote in and can see the desktop normally. The screen remains frozen.
I was able to initially get it working by resetting PRAM and NVRAM but that is no longer working either. Also tried an SMC reset.
Can't boot from CD or recovery partition (same result..gray Apple Logo boot screen freeze).
Booting it in target disc mode allows full access to the HD without issue. HD was checked (no issues) as well as permissions the one time I did get a desktop.
    Any ideas?

Was able to pull this info from the kernel log.
Feb  8 21:02:38 Username kernel[0]: NVDA: rmStart failed
    Feb  8 21:02:38 Username kernel[0]: NVDA,Display-B: Not usable
Any suggestions? It appears that the video is not initializing properly. Not sure at this point if it's a hardware failure or not. I tried reinstalling when I managed to get to recovery console, but that doesn't seem to have helped either. That only overlayed the files on the partition though. Perhaps I should just try a complete reformat?

  • HELP! Macbook Pro Display won't work!

I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro from Late 2007; it worked fine yesterday, but as of this morning the display will not work! It makes the Chime when you power it up, but no screen display; I know it's on because you can adjust the volume buttons and hear the volume beeps. The screen brightener and dimmer does nothing, as well as the keys brightener and dimmer. The apple help text said to first try restarting it, did it no change-> then unplug it and disconnect battery for 1 minute, did it no change-> reset the PRAM which I did no change, and then if that didn't work to reset the SMC which I did and got no change in my problem.
And now the part that boggles my mind is I have the cables to hook up the MBP to my TV so i figured I'd atleast be able see it on the TV if the display has crapped out on the MBP but its doesn't transmit the image to there either. So anyone got any ideas? Is it possible I caught a virus that kills displaying ability? Please help!

    I'm having the same issue
it started with distorted horizontal lines across my screen, then yesterday black just like yours. I reset the pram and the power. not working, doesnt work with external monitor either. that article seems to be the answer from CMCSK's link
i'll let you know soon how it works out for me

  • My macbook pro keyboard won't work or respond at all, other than that everything is working properly.

I have a macbook pro (i7) 13'', everything was working properly, but out of a sudden the keyboard is dead & won't respond to anything, now I can't login. I restarted it many times but still the same problem. Any suggestions??!!! help me out plssss.
    Thanks so much..

I just went through something with my MacBook Pro 13" where I was using a USB mouse and a MIDI keyboard. I left the computer for a while and it went into sleep mode and when I came back to it, the machine was very slow to respond. I shut out of everything and rebooted only to find that neither my built-in trackpad or keyboard was working anymore. I plugged in my USB mouse and that worked, and then a USB keyboard and that worked, but no signal from my built-in peripherals.
I ran a disc repair, cleaned out everything I could, updated all software, etc. etc. -- nothing... until finally I read something about how Java can cause a problem. I then went into my advanced settings and deleted everything in Java and Flash security. Also making it very difficult for those two applications to save anything to my machine. Once I rebooted my keyboard and trackpad were fullly functional again.
Wanted to share this because it was such an unintuitive fix but my computer is back at full speed again.

  • Macbook Pro Messages won't work. Help?

Hello. I have a macbook pro running os Yosemite. I am trying to use my messages application, so I don't have to use my iPhone/iPad to text with iMessage. Everytime I launch the application on my mac, I sign in to my apple id. I am 100% sure I am right, the password and login ID are correct, but it keeps saying that it is wrong. I use the same apple ID as i do with my iPhone and iPad for iMessages. I tried going through preferences and logging in from there, but it still doesn't allow me to log in. I am running the latest ios for iPad mini 1.8.3, and 1.7 for iPhone 4 (my iPhone doesn't have any plans). Please any help .
It keeps saying "Messages can’t log in to <censored my email> because your login ID or password is incorrect."

    Hello MacUserNo.1,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are attempting to log into Messages on your Mac but are receiving an error that your Apple ID or password is incorrect. Even though you are sure that they are correct, it may be necessary to change your password to ensure a correct password. Please use the steps in the attached article to complete this process.

  • My MacBook Pro display won't work without a second display plugged in. What caused this, and how do I fix it?

I'm using a Dynex Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adaptor to use a second display (an older display, I'll admit). After I have unplugged the adaptor, my MacBook still tries to read the second display, and switches back-and-forth between a blue screen & my desktop. It stabilizes once I plug the adaptor back in. What is causing this problem, and how do I fix it so I can use my primary display without having the adaptor constantly plugged in?

    Reset PRAM.

    If not try Reset SMC.

  • Macbook pro keyboard won't work

Everything was working fine, then all of the sudden the keyboard started acting up. If you press certain buttons it just wont let it type. I press certain buttons and the wrong action occurs, for example, i pressed "z" and the volume started turing down. Also, the track pad is acting up, it only right clicks no matter what. Please help, I have restarted it lots of times and sometimes it will work for a little bit then start acting up. It seems like everytime I restart it gets worse. HELP!!

    Hi c,
Depending on which MBP you have, it could be the keyboard/trackpad cable, so it would be good to know that information. Also, have you tried an external keyboard?

  • I have two problems with my 2012 13" MacBook Pro. 1. Gray screen shows at startup  2. Randomly disconnects from network. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have two problems with my 2012 13” MacBook Pro.
    Gray screen shows at startup
    Randomly disconnects from network.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First, open Terminal in your Utilities folder and paste this into the prompt line:
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again.
Next, boot the computer into Safe Mode.
    Next, do the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    orshikhfromsc,
boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro (by holding down the C key as it starts up). When the desktop appears, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase your internal disk. After it’s been erased, reformat it. After it’s been reformatted, exit Disk Utility and reïnstall the version of Mac OS X from that DVD onto your internal disk. After that version of Mac OS X has been reïnstalled, boot from your internal disk and run Software Update to get it up-to-date within that version; that should allow you to redownload and reïnstall Mavericks, if  desired. If Mavericks is reïnstalled, run Software Update again to get it up to date.
If you no longer have the two grey installation DVDs, you can purchase a replacement set from either Apple or iFixit.

  • When starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, then to color to color, any suggestion to fixing this problem?

When i am starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, and then to color to color, and the whole process repeat all over again, is there any suggestion in solving this, or is there no way to solve this and i need to bring it to the apple support?
    My computer Spec:
    Macbook pro Version 2011

Sounds as if you're having a problem with your GPU (graphics card). Only Apple can diagnose and fix this, so the best thing would be to take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP.
