Gray screen, spinning cog and midway to first back up of time machine

Hi,
I got a new external hard drive and wanted to back up my system, which I tried using time machine. At some point during the back up, it appeared to me that time machine is stuck. I tried stopping the back up but my machine was not responding, even any other application. I power it down by down the power key. So, I had backed up some data and not all of it.
Now, when I restarted it is showing gray screen with apple logo and spinning cog and not moving beyond that (even after 4 hours). I am kind of worried if my hard disk has crashed and I have lost the remaining data.
Any help regarding trouble shooting this will be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
v8r.

Basically, you need to boot from a drive other than the one that is failing. If your external already has an operating system on it, you can boot from that one. Since you're asking, though, I'm going to assume it does not.
First things first: cables. You need a firewire cable to connect your MacBook Pro to your Mac mini. I don't know what FireWire ports are available on your two machines. The two types of FireWire (400/800) are compatible, so if the two machines don't have the same ports, you can get an adapter. See this page for info about types of FireWire ports: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8259.html
- Next, boot the machine with the failing drive into "Target Disk Mode." When you hear the chime, hold down the "T" key. You should not see the Apple logo. Instead, you should see the FireWire logo slowly moving around the screen. This tells the computer to act as if it were simply an external hard drive.
- Connect the MacBook Pro to your Mac mini via FireWire. If you're lucky, the drive will show up on the desktop of your Mac mini. Copy the files to a safe location.
- If it does not, you'll need to use software to recover the data. If you already have DiskWarrior, you can run DiskWarrior from your Mac mini on the MBP's drive. If you don't or if DW failed to produce a read-only "preview," I would recommend ProSoft's Data Rescue: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php DiskWarrior has more long-term use, but Data Rescue is better for this situation.
I know I still skimmed over a few things (e.g. using third-party software that I no longer have), but I hope that gets you started.

  • Mac boot issue; gray screen, spinning wheel, and progress bar

Recently I shut down my Mac only to find when I tried turning it back on it was very slow and unresponsive. I proceeded to shut down a couple more times and this resulted in a gray screen upon startup with a spinning wheel, apple logo, and a progress bar. The progress bar did not fill at all at first, and as I left my laptop for about 40 minutes, it still hadn't moved. I proceeded then to boot in recovery and tried to repair my disk. This resulted in another issue, and would not repair, so I decided to just erase my HD, since there was not anything important on it anyways. I really just wanted my laptop to turn on so I could start my paper. Well it wouldn't erase my hard disk and this led to me becoming very impatient and just quitting the process. On the next attempt to boot in recovery, the hard disk doesn't even show up. Only the recovery disk (previously there were two disks as options, as well as the wifi selection). I'm now using safari through the recovery option. I'd like to simply get my computer back. If i can't get anywhere on here, i'm just going to bring it to the apple store and return it, most likely, as i've had nothing but problems with this thing. I've had it since the middle of September, and I can't hardly believe i've already encountered such an issue. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd make a trip to the Apple Store - your hard disk may be dying (the Recovery partition is very small) or there might be something corrupt in your system. They'll be able to evaluate it.

  • Gray screen, spinning wheel and nothing else

Man if it ain't one thing its another lol. just recently bought a early 2009 Mac Pro with 12 GB memory, 4 hard drives (total 8TB) stock graphics board and one superdrive (stock) and one pioneer Blue ray drive installed, the system had been running fine until I rebooted last night. I had added the program pathfinder and it was running fine before rebooting so that is the only thing I can think of that I have added to the system since the last reboot. anyway now all i get is the gray screen with the apple in the center and the spinning wheel near the bottom of the screen. I even tried rebooting holding down the "shift" key and the only difference is I got a hollow bar centered near the bottom along with the apple and spinning wheel above it. it started filling in the center and then half way through it went away and once again I was where I was with all the other attempts to boot the system. Can someone give me an idea of what is causing the problem and some possible solutions.
    Thank you
    Ed

OK I've tried rebooting using the shift key, no luck same gray screen and spinning wheel
tried booting using the cmd+shift= V keys, nothing at all
then I tried cmd+shift= V to watch what was happening dfuring a safe reboot and it came to the line
unable to open: /var/db/bootcache.playlist: 2 no such file or directory
then nothing. I have also disconnected all usb externals while doing all this.
I'm beginning to think that the new (boot) hard drive is having an issue and am trying to figure out how to boot from an external back up of the boot drive.

  • Is this first back up with Time Machine too slow?

I'm running my first backup onto a new Western Digital Essential 1 terrabyte via a USB connection.
It started at 2AM. It's now 9AM and the progress bar reads:
    "16.5 Gigs of 118 Gigs"
That's a little better than two gigs an hour.
This seems very slow to me and I'd like to know if that impression is correct. At that rate it seems like the back up will take more than two days.
    Is this "normal?"

Yes, that's ridiculous. While Time Machine backups are slower than just copying things, and especially slower at the beginning, you should get roughly 40 - 60 GB/hour, on average.
First, make sure the drive is set up properly, per #C1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If so, try the things in the green box of #D2 there. Most of them can be done without cancelling the backup.

  • Gray screen, apple logo and spinning gear hang at start up

after a lengthy round of "bejeweled", i let my imac fall into screen saver mode. when i tried to log back in, i tapped the mouse and the imac flashed as it does when actuated outside a dialogue without clicking the okay button, and immediately returned to screen saver. i then manually shut down and restarted to the gray screen, apple logo and spinning gear hang. i then inserted the leopard install dvd, manually shut down and restarted pressing the option key and selected the install disc. it booted as usual. i selected the language preferred, used the utility drop down menu and selected DU, then selected the hard drive and verify permissions to reveal a pop up "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Permissions verification complete." i immediately selected repair disc, and breathed a sigh of relief with the notification "appears to be ok". then utilities/start up disc/macintosh hd/restart. still get the hang. i have repeated this process several times, also resetting the PRAM as well to the infinite hang. as a matter of fact, the gear has been spinning the entire time creating this post. needless to say, i am truly at a loss. SOS!!!!!!! Please!!!!! SEND LAWYERS, GUNS AND MONEY!!!!

i have perused some of the threads posted per this topic and decided to attempt an "archive and install." i also have a 620gig acomdata external drive with close to a carbon copy of my internal. a few short minutes into the install, the imac reveals a pop up stating it cannot install some files on the hard drive, contact the software manufacturer or restart and try to install again. the internal drive is a 160gig with only about 60gigs of room, so i tried to archive and install to the acomdata instead as it has 180 gig of free space. i get the exact same dialogue once again. restart and a third attempt only archive and install will not highlight, only first time and/or erase and install. further, start up disc shows only the install disc and network as choices. so i attempt first time install on both drives and get the same pop up message again. DU recognizes both drives although verify/repair permissions does not highlight, but not start up disc.
i'm trying not to become frantic, but my patience is threadbare. i am in desperate need of sound advice as to what i need to do.
    thanks again in advance,

  • My G5 won't boot up. The Gray screen comes on and it thinks about it until the fan revs up like it is about to explode. A friend said to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. Didin't work. Any suggestions? Isn't there a key stroke to help

Oh, so this is where I ask my question. Sorry, first time here. As I was saying in my long intro, the gray screen come up and the thing is spinning at the bottom, but nothing happens. Then the fan starts reving up like it is about to explode and I have to manually shut it off. A friend told me to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. I couldn't find the thing, so I went out and bought another. Needless to say, it didn't work. Is there a key stroke to help jump start the machine? How can I get into this thing? I would prefer not to take it in because there are a lot of things on there I don't want just anyone to have access to.Thanks, in advance, for your help!

The last time you had to hold down cmd opt pr more than twice was a decade ago....

Apple has a number of resources like "Power or Startup Quick Assist"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1149
Your drive does need to be repaired, and best things to buy are another backup recovery drive, with a small OS X partition; a copy of Disk Warrior is expensive @ $90 but excellent and best.
Never bother with or use the drive or reinstall while there are errors. Don't take a "clean' bill from Apple Disk Utility to mean there are no errors. Only that it didn't find what it looked for.

Make sure to have multiple backup sets and of your system so if there is a serious problem, you can just erase and restore to be back runninig.
Sounds like your G5 though needs PMU reset, not PRAM, and the best way for those is to clear nvram instead. might even want to check for dust; tell what System Profile says (later) as to "PowerMacX,Y" or "MacProX,1"
    http://www.apple.com/support/powermac or /macpro
    http://www.apple.com/support/sitemap/
The Utility menu is on the menu bar of an "OS X Install DVD" and at the point where you get to but stop at "install....' for OS X. you probably do need to install OS X on another drive to work from.
Oh, a real severe issue and damage to the drive directory or filesystem CAN in cases prevent booting from DVD (the system still tries to find and see what boot volumes are present) and can help to pull or disconnect the drive. Putting a drive in a FW case to turn on after startup is very useful.

  • Start Up Issue-Gray Screen, Apple Logo And Cognition Wheel-Blue screen before start up at times but no longer starting up beyond gray screen and cognition wheel

    Power button pressed.
    Start up light okay
    Chimes okay
Gray screen, apple logo and cognition wheel spinning and the loading bar underneath loading 1/10th of the way.
Loading bar doesnt load fully and then disappears.
Gray screen remains with apple logo and cognition wheel only.
No start up to desktop. Before start up to desk top which is not happening any more a blue screen appeared before the desktop appeared. When start up complete the ' Finder' had no responded and did not work' Multi coloured loading pointer continually turned. ' Network' could not be loaded in 'System Prefrences'.
Ive tried reading and following propts...Results NVRAM/PRAM - Logic board battery replacement. How much will this cost?
Hardware test - No problem found
Safe Boot - ' volume Machintosh HD could not be repaired.'
' Run time corruption detected on Machintosh HD device'
What do you suggest aside from taking it to a apple store?
    Thanks Stephen

Lion or Snow Leopard? If Lion, boot into your Recovery partition (hold down the Command and R keys whilst booting) and use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair the boot volume.
If Snow Leopard, use the installation disc and use Disk Utility in the same manner.

    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

On the phone with Apple Support, had me hold down the C key upon restart, Repair Permissions, all checked out OK, restarted, but am still stuck at the same place. I'm on hold for the "portables" department. PowerBook is 45 days old. Any advice? Thanks,

My iPhone 5 screen is black and will not come back on. The phone still works when paired with my vehicles Bluetooth what's wrong with it, and can I fix it?

I have a similar problem.  I restored my iPhone 5 to the latest available OS.  After completing the process the phone never restarted.  The phone was fully charged when I restored it but now refuses to charge past the red battery icon.  I have been able to get the phone in UFD mode several times and have been able to load the new OS on the phone.  The Apple logo does come on and the software fully loads.  iTunes tells me the phone will restart but never does.  I left it to charge all night but it never appeared to load the battery.  This morning I went to the Grand Central Terminal apple store for help.  A woman at the store plugged the phone in but it never charged.  She absolutely refused to believe that I got my phone in UFD mode and loaded any software on.  I don't think it is a battery issue.  The only solution I was given was to buy a new phone.  Repairing it was out of the question.  At this point the phone is completely useless.  Thanks in advance for the help.
