Gray screen, spinning wheel of death?

Hi - I have poked around a little hoping someone else might have had this exact problem, and I do apologize if this has been posted before. Anyway-
My sister had a hard drive failure on her ibook G4; the Apple store just replaced her hard drive. Her symptom was the grey spinning wheel, which just kept spinning for five minutes. When I got her computer back a couple of days ago, the extra memory chip I'd gotten from OWC had been removed. The Apple techs gave us a note stating this had caused her problems.
Of course, I got worried because my trusty g3 has a similar chip in it! I'd bought them both from OWC at the same time and had someone (who was rather rough - but I couldn't get it in myself) install them for us. So I grabbed the Techtool Deluxe disk from work, booted from the disk, and ran the tests. Everything passed except that there was some volume damage. I then elected to let techtool repair the drive - which took forever. Stupidly, perhaps, I aborted the repair about 3/4 of the way through and checked my email. (It was then after midnight, and the disk had been spinning away, between tests and repair, for close to five hours.) The machine rebooted and got my mail, but was extremely sluggish. I forced mail to quit, then shut it down. But I had a bad feeling.
This morning, I tried to boot up, and got the normal chime and then the spinning wheel - for five minutes. I could hear no sounds from the hard drive.
Fortunately, I have much of my data saved to my .mac com account and to an external firewire drive. So I haven't lost everything. But I'd really like to save this little machine if I can. I thought about removing the memory chip and trying to boot, but I can't remember if it's the upper chip or the lower one! Should I try to do this? (Taking out one chip at a time?) And should I take it in to have the backup battery replaced (I've owned it for nearly four years now, and, so far as I know, the battery has never been replaced.) Is there anything else I can do, or is this machine dead?
I have the original system disks, Jaguar, and a tiger DVD - not sure, however, if I can boot it from the external dvd drive, or any disk at all at this point. The only symptoms I'd had previously were a failure to shut down after I'd backed up stuff to my idisk and one previous cranky (but perfectly normal, once it got going) startup. I'm afraid I may have made matters worse by interrupting the repair in progress. It's a dual boot g3 700 mhz, running Tiger 10.4.11. Including the possibly defective chip, it has 768 megs of ram. It's been a great machine, and I was counting on having it for another year or two. TIA for your help!

RAM can go bad after it's been working, although it's not that common. I don't think it's ever happened to me. OWC has a lifetime warranty on RAM, so your sister may want to contact OWC.
I installed Tiger from the DVD using my firewire LaCie DVD/CD writer/reader. It's the same way I've installed other programs from DVD, but I never attempted to boot the machine this way.
Since you have to boot from the installation disc to install Tiger, you must have used that external DVD drive to boot the iMac before.
If you can run boot from the Tiger DVD, do so. Then, at the first Installer screen (after language selection), go up to the Installer's menu under Utilities and select to run +Disk Utility+. Then, select the internal drive in the sidebar and run +Repair Disk+ in the +First Aid+ tab. Note if any errors are reported and, if so, see if Disk Utility was able to repair the damaged.
If Disk Utility is not able to fix the error, you can let TechTool have another shot.
Alternately, before any more repair attempts, you can do the following to try to save your data that was not backed up before attempting repair. Start up your iMac in +FireWire Target Disk Mode+.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
This procedure turns your iMac into an external FireWire hard drive. Then connect it to your sister's iBook using a regular FireWire cable. The iMac's hard drive will hopefully appear on the iBook's desktop; disk directory damage sometimes prevents startup, but the drive may still be accessible if it's not the startup drive. If it does mount to the iBooks desktop, save off those important files right away.
Once you have all the files you need, the best course of action may be to erase the drive and give the iMac a fresh start.

  • Mac boot issue; gray screen, spinning wheel, and progress bar

Recently I shut down my Mac only to find when I tried turning it back on it was very slow and unresponsive. I proceeded to shut down a couple more times and this resulted in a gray screen upon startup with a spinning wheel, apple logo, and a progress bar. The progress bar did not fill at all at first, and as I left my laptop for about 40 minutes, it still hadn't moved. I proceeded then to boot in recovery and tried to repair my disk. This resulted in another issue, and would not repair, so I decided to just erase my HD, since there was not anything important on it anyways. I really just wanted my laptop to turn on so I could start my paper. Well it wouldn't erase my hard disk and this led to me becoming very impatient and just quitting the process. On the next attempt to boot in recovery, the hard disk doesn't even show up. Only the recovery disk (previously there were two disks as options, as well as the wifi selection). I'm now using safari through the recovery option. I'd like to simply get my computer back. If i can't get anywhere on here, i'm just going to bring it to the apple store and return it, most likely, as i've had nothing but problems with this thing. I've had it since the middle of September, and I can't hardly believe i've already encountered such an issue. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd make a trip to the Apple Store - your hard disk may be dying (the Recovery partition is very small) or there might be something corrupt in your system. They'll be able to evaluate it.

  • IMac shuts down after gray screen/spinning wheel

Every time I start my iMac G5, I hear the chime and then see the gray screen Apple with the spinning wheel, but then it shuts down, never making it to the blue screen and desktop.
Can anyone tell me what the cause of this might be?
    Thanks!

Are you able to boot into safe mode? Are you able to boot from your OSX installation disk?

  • Gray screen, spinning wheel and nothing else

Man if it ain't one thing its another lol. just recently bought a early 2009 Mac Pro with 12 GB memory, 4 hard drives (total 8TB) stock graphics board and one superdrive (stock) and one pioneer Blue ray drive installed, the system had been running fine until I rebooted last night. I had added the program pathfinder and it was running fine before rebooting so that is the only thing I can think of that I have added to the system since the last reboot. anyway now all i get is the gray screen with the apple in the center and the spinning wheel near the bottom of the screen. I even tried rebooting holding down the "shift" key and the only difference is I got a hollow bar centered near the bottom along with the apple and spinning wheel above it. it started filling in the center and then half way through it went away and once again I was where I was with all the other attempts to boot the system. Can someone give me an idea of what is causing the problem and some possible solutions.
    Thank you
    Ed

OK I've tried rebooting using the shift key, no luck same gray screen and spinning wheel
tried booting using the cmd+shift= V keys, nothing at all
then I tried cmd+shift= V to watch what was happening dfuring a safe reboot and it came to the line
unable to open: /var/db/bootcache.playlist: 2 no such file or directory
then nothing. I have also disconnected all usb externals while doing all this.
I'm beginning to think that the new (boot) hard drive is having an issue and am trying to figure out how to boot from an external back up of the boot drive.

  • Macbook Pro 13-inch Late 2011 with constant Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD)

    Hi Guys!
I really have a problem with the Spinning Wheel of Death and slow performance all the time. It suddently started after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
These are the things i've tried so far:
    - Boot up in Safe Mode and Internet Recovery Mode to repair disc permissions and disc = No Errors found at all
    - Used SMARTreporter but everything returned as OK
    - Installed 16GB of ram installed
    - Looked in Activity Monitor, but everything appears to be okay with both RAM, CPU and HD
    - Boot with Apple Hardware Test = Everything OK
    - Booted up in Internet Recovery and erased the entire HD, clean installed OS X Lion (the OS i bought the Macbook Pro with)
First i thought it was a problem with my HD or my RAM. But everything is returning the OK result. I really hope some of you out there can help me, cause right now its realy hard to use it at the University. It looks like its a software problem, but i can't figure it out.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • The Spinning Wheel of Death

For the past couple of months I have been having a problem of the spinning wheel spinning and spinning and spinning, taking seemingly forever to upload a new screen in Safari or a new application from the HD.
I did read several of the posts on the 30+ page discussion regarding freezing of machines after the latest large update of Snow Leopard. Although there seems to be a few times per week such freezing does occur, this is fairly infrequent when compared to the 95% of activity that is falling victim to the Spinning Wheel of Death. I have loved the Apple OS from the moment I began using it 5 or so years ago and this is really the very first time I've had such a frustrating issue with an Apple product (I haven't even experienced the antenna issue with my iPhone 4).
At work I have to use a PC and if this were a PC, I'd do something like check for malware to see if that was slowing the process down. I've done that on my MacBook Pro with the Mac-compatible equivalent to the Malwarebytes program I have at work, but still I get the Spinning Wheel of Death. I've even dumped some recent applications that I downloaded to see if they might have been the cause. Nope.
I don't know how to check which programs are running in the background, so that has not yet been done.If I did, I'd obviously turn off some of those I don't need to start up at login.
Does anyone have a "for Dummies" explanation of what other things I might do to attempt to remedy this situation? It shouldn't take 2-5 minutes for a web page to download or an application to begin.
    Thanks in advance.

    Gr8ful -
The link baltwo linked is a great one.
I have a couple questions for you, OK?
    1. What are you using to check for "malware?"
    2. Have you ever checked your Font Book Application in your Applications folder
for duplicates or corrupt fonts? That would be something I would check.
You can open up "Activity Monitor" in your Applications > Utilities folder.
Leave it open on your desktop, and select "All proceesses" rather than "My processes."
Have a look and monitor what kicks in when the beachball appears.
    For browser slowness:
Are you emptying your Safari Cache & History lists (assuming you're using Safari as your browser).

  • Corrupt User Data Spinning Wheel Of Death Mac Palm Desktop Rev D

    Hello,
My Treo 700p stopped working and Palm Desktop on My Mac will not open, import, or merge my user data files (current and backups). I've tried the apple-option Merge and import tricks to no avail. If it is set as the default user data, palm desktop will freeze on its splash screen and give me the spinning wheel of death. If i open, i get the message "Opening User Data One moment please..." with an eternal spinning wheel of death (SWOD). If i restore (apple-option merge) i immediately get the SWOD, If i merge, i am notified that the merge is successful, but then i get the spinning wheel of death before any data is displayed. I can open the userdata in textwrangler and see all of the phone numbers, notes, etc, but It seems impossible to parse into any format for reimporting or moving to my Pre. Are there any other tricks to opening the user data or recovering its contents. Any debug tools or software interrupts or anything I can do? Is there a way to open this stuff in a properly parsed format? Can User Data files be opened or imported by any other app? Also the Treo 700p gets power and the red light stays on but it never boots, perhaps there is a forensic tool that can recover the data?
Thank You for all your help and I would greatly appreciate any resolution.

What BDAqua said. Get those crummy fonts you added off the drive. At least one of them must be so bad that's it's corrupting RAM every time the system tries to load it.
A Safe Mode boot removes the user cache files of the account you log into in Safe Mode, and clears Font Book's database. Normally, that would allow you to restart normally since Font Book's database is not rebuilt until you launch Font Book. That you can't even get that far means you have some really BAD fonts.
Boot into Safe Mode again. Make a new folder on the desktop and move all of the fonts you added out of the /Library/Fonts/ folded, or the Fonts folder of your user account. Whichever one you put them in.
Now you should be able to startup normally.

  • Spinning wheel of death suddenly in safari 7.1.3

Hi my Safari suddenly started spinning wheel of death today. It was fine this morning, but suddenly mid morning started with the spinning wheel of death. The only thing that happened was I had a pop up with some virus protection and a number to call. I couldn't get the pop up to go, so I force quit safari. Not sure if this is anything to do with it. (iTunes also gone buggy)
I restarted safari and mac, but problems still there. I downloaded etrecheck and attached is the report

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • IPhone 4s unresponsive stuck on the spinning wheel of death.

    Hi,
My 4s has gotten progressively more unresponsive for the last few days.  It worked flawlessly for two weeks or so, but the last two or so days have seen it getting weird.
Symptom 1 appeared 2-3 days or so ago: Facebook started getting freezy.  50% of the time it would take after opening it would take 15-45 sec to become to finish loading and become responsive to touch commands.
Symptom 2 happened 2 days ago: The phone  froze for 15 or so seconds, went to black screen, showed the spinning wheel of death, and then rebooted to lock screen very quickly.
Symptom 3 happened 4 hours ago:  The phone was searching for the carrier when I took it out of my pocket.  Other iphone users in the room had perfect reception.  I solved the problem by turning on airplane mode briefly and then turning it off again.
Symptom 4 happened just now: I was playing music, paused with the earbud control, switched to a different set of headphones, pressed play on the lock screen and got no response.  Realized the phone was frozen.  It stayed that way for 2-3 minutes, went to black screen and the spinning wheel of death, but then the spinning wheel of death froze as well.  It has been in this state for the last 20 minutes.
I will be happy to post time-stamped photos of the locked up phone if anyone needs proof.
A hard-reset solved the problem.  For now.
Any advice on what this could be?  A software setting?  An app interaction?
Any advice on if I should return the phone and get a different one?
    Thanks!
    --Jason

Hey sorry to hear about your frustration.
    A couple of things.
First, Facebook is known for causing issues on iPhone. It takes up a lot of memory and has been known to crash a lot. It has gotten a lot better with time and updates but can still cause problems. I tend to manually quit it from the App-switcher/multitasking tray.
Second, the reception issue you mentioned ("Searching", lack of data connection) sounds like it might be similar to some of the reports on this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3511559?tstart=30#3511559
Personally, I've been having the same problems on my 4S with reception as well as Siri being unavailable in spite of having 3G and being able to make/receive calls.
Thirdly, now that you mention it, I have noticed lack of responsiveness to touch input at times. Sometimes when my phone is locked, I'll press the home button or the wake button and it will take quite awhile before the phone reponds amd the screen turns on. Sometimes it doesn't at all and I have to press the button multiple times to get a reponse.
So, yes, many of your issues sound familiar. Unfortunately, I think I share some of them with you.
One thing you might want to check is what software version you have. The most recent is 5.0.1 build 9A406. If you have 5.0.1 build 9A405 you're not running the most up-to-date software. In that case, update by backing ul and restoring from iTunes (sofware update on the phone will not show the update; it has to be done via backup+restore in iTunes). To check what version you have, go to Settings>General>About. Scroll down and check what it says under "Version".
    I hope that helps somewhat.

  • Mac Book Pro constantly displays spinning wheel of death HELP!!!

My Mac Book Pro (after installing Mavericks) displays the spinning wheel of death multiple times per day. I thought it was my Google Chrome, but now it has been happening no matter what application I am using. I used Etrecheck to see what is going on with my computer, but I don't actually know what the output means. I've copied the information below.
More information: I no longer have a Blackberry, but I don't know how to remove any software that may still be on my computer (since I see Blackberry listed under Kernel Extensions). I also backed up my harddrive on the 28th, just to be safe.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this. I'm in the process of trying to study for mulitple teacher certification exams, so this is the worst possible time for tmy computer to suddenly go haywire. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help!

    kmiddlet88,
yes, it could be due to nearly anything listed in your kernel extensions, startup items, launch daemons, launch agents, or user items above. Please check all of your installed third-party software to make sure that the versions which are installed on your MacBook Pro are compatible with Mavericks; uninstall every software package which isn’t Mavericks-compatible. After you’ve done that, boot into Safe mode, and see if you still get the beach ball of doom there. If it doesn’t appear there, restart normally and see if it appears then.

Why is it that it would take a very long time [if ever] to change or adjust the tempo of a loop in the audio track when i set it to adjust regions to locators? Until now the spinning wheel of death is still very much spinning. thanks for any help.
Is there another way to adjust tempo of loops the faster way, any other technique?

No clue why the final processes have suddenly started to take so long. Two things I'd try: a) capture from an older tape to see if some problem with the new tape is at fault.  And b) check the health of your RAM and the hard drive.
The red frame sounds a bit like a glitch we used to have in OnLocation (actually in its predecessor HDV Rack) which was caused by a partial GOP. But that was a product of HDV Rack recording from the live video stream. It turned out that HDV cameras intentionally interrupt the data stream for an instant upon starting to record--specifically to avoid recording a partial GOP to tape. So my gut says that the tape has partial GOPs at the points where you stopped/started recording.

  • I get the spinning wheel of death every time I try to open the desktop

How can I fix the spinning wheel of death when trying to open the desktop /screensaver icon in system preferences?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair permissions.
If it doesn't work, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Preferences, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and restart

  • NON Creative Cloud CS6 indesign will not open Spinning wheel of death

We have 8 of 16 Mac Yosemite computers all imaged the same way and all other adobe CS6 NON Cloud they work fine.  However when we open InDesign only we get the spinning wheel of death and I have to Force close the program.  Adobe offers NO chat or Phone support and I have tried the Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences  both manually and with the Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift   command and that doesn't work?  I am in desperate need please help!   Thank you for reading my post,
