Gray screen won't go away..Semi-kernel panic?

Hello, well my mac is at it again...This morning I turned my G5 on and the gray screen with the warnings in several languages appeared, I restarted a couple of times and nothing improved, I used disk utility and supposedly it repaired permissions and disk, but after restarting, the gray screen appeared again...after that I used disk warrior...I rebuilt the directory and repaired permissions once again, but no luck...So I tried the disk utility once again just to find out that apparently my disk condition has worsened it showed more permission errors and said that my disk couldn't unmount...
I've been using both diskwarrior and disk utility but no luck, the **** gray screen keeps appearing but there is no kernel panic message afterwards.
I don't know what could have triggered this...I made a quicktime update and a security update but I used the disk utility before and after doing it (lesson learned for a recent kernel panic) and after that the mac booted normally. I have 2 hard disks, both with tiger installed in them; one of them (my regular startup disk) contains the damaged OS, and the second one works fine and I'm able to access the files from my damaged drive, also according to disk warrior my disk is fine, so I'm pretty sure it is a OS issue
I guess my question is...what else is left to do? can I fix it? I'd buy a new internal drive but I spent all my money on Disk warrior! either I keep doing something wrong or security updates keep screwing my mac...well, I guess that's it--I hope help you can help me, this time I think I've tried everything I know but I'm not having any luck.

Yes you can if you do it right...
You can choose to preserve your user and network settings before installing. This option automatically moves existing users, Home directories, and network settings. This also skips the Setup Assistant after installation.

  • BLUE SCREEN WON"T GO AWAY ON STARTUP

When I turn on my iMac, the blue screen won't go away so I can't enter my login. Does anybody knows what's happening? What can I do to fix it?

    Uninstall Windows.
Seriously though, how long has it been on? I had the blue screen take 30 minutes once. Usually when it doesn't happen quick" though, I just force it to power off then back on. So far, that always works. Can't comment about whether I'm doing any damage though (though I've been doing it with PC's for over a decade )

  • Do Not Disconnect screen won't go away

Yeah basically, whenever my iPod is connected to my computer the "Do Not Disconnect" screen won't go away, even though nothing is being sent out iTunes to my iPod video. I've even tried reseting my iPod and I added all my music back on it but it still displays this screen. There isn't even the swirling icon in the top left corner. This only seems to happen when iTunes is running. As soon as I hit the eject button in iTunes it goes back to the normal screen. It's been doing this for like 3 hours now. Help?

If disk mode is enabled the do-not-disconnect will not go away and you must eject manually.
Turn off disk mode and it will only say do-not-disconnect only when the iPod is actively synching.

  • Need Help - ipod video in trouble - white screen won't go away - help??

White Scree appears and won't go away. Can someone help?

Apple engineers have determined that this is caused by not allowing the firmware update to finish the installation before disconnecting the iPod. Try these steps.
    Reset the iPod.
If the reset doesn't help, then put the iPod into forced disk mode.
How to put the iPod into disk mode.
Now connect the iPod to the computer. This step may immediately take you to the iPod's normal display screen. Reset the iPod to exit disk mode.
If you still have the white screen, then you should use the updater to restore the iPod.
Wait until the restore has finished before disconnecting the iPod. If you're unsure, wait at least 20 minutes (it's probably overkill but best to be sure). In my experience, the software updater for version 1.1.1 takes longer to complete the process than previous updaters.
    That should cure the issue.
If however it doesn't, and your iPod is still non responsive (doesn't reset, nothing on the screen or button presses don't work), then it will have to be sent away for service.

  • HELP!! Screen frozen w' gray screen + apple..threw out mach kernel file

I made a bad mistake and threw out a mach kernel file from an ibook G4 with osx 10.3.9, thinking I was cleaning up. (I had a lot of files that appeared and cluttered up my HD) Anyway, now the System Disk is stuck in the computer. I had read I could try to do an Archive Install, so put in the System Disk. Now, it starts up and stays frozen on a gray screen with the apple logo. I can not get the disk out by starting up with the mouse button down.
    Please help, any suggestions appreciated!

    Hi BBartSFe!
What you have done, is described in this KB Article "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts.
You will also find instructions there, on how to recover from your mistake.
    Good Luck!

  • Gray screen won't load

My computer will turn on but goes to the gray screen with the apple and loading symbol. It stays on this page. Won't take me to log in. What should I do?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Iphone message 'return to call' at the top of the screen won't go away

I was on the phone when I received a text message and the iphone had the green strip at the top that said 'touch to return to call' so I touched it and it returned to the call but now the green strip with the message won't go away. Any suggestions? Do I have to go on itunes and return the iphone to factory settings? Will I lose all of my data if I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Basics from the manual are:
    Restart.
    Reset.
    Restore.
    Have you tried these?

  • Screen locking up, odd graphics errors, kernel panics

    Hello,
My girlfriend just got a Macbook Pro, been working fine until last night, she was getting graphic errors, the screen was like toubled up, and the cursor became just a dot, but repeated about 8 times. She could move the cursor, but nothing worked. I was able to login using SSH to the mac, and that was all fine, I tried killall Skype, it quit but was still open on her screen.
We installed the EFI update from the command line via SSH, didn't fix it, then reset the PRAM, that seemed to fix that issue.
However, this morning she has had mutiple kernel panics, I've logged in on SSH again and got the log, can anyone help me diagnose what could be causing it?

Any thoughts are welcome, she has a Macbook Pro, with 8GB RAM, and a 500GB HDD, she shelled out over £2,000 for it, any explanation for the cause of this would be brilliant
    Thanks!

  • A blank gray box won't go away...why not? How can I get rid of it?

Every time I open Firefox, a gray box (about 1in x 1in) appears in the near upper left hand corner of my screen. When Firefox is open (and not hidden) the gray square covers any window that it is located over - this will included any non-Firefox applications. Only when Firefox is exited or hid will the gray square disappear. Please help!! I'd like this square to be gone.

This could be a feature of a Firefox add-on. A standard diagnostic to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings) is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode ([[Safe Mode]]) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode."
If the site works correctly, this points to one of your extensions or custom settings as the problem.
To further disable add-ons, you can try here:
    Tools > Add-ons > Plugins category
    Any change?

  • Green bar on top of screen-won't go away

After two calls b2b on my iPhone today, a green bar appeared on top of my screen with "Touch to return to call". I can't make the bar to go away. There's no caller waiting either. Please advise.

    verbenadesign,
Have you tried making another call outbound?
If that doesn't clear it, and tapping it doesn't take you to a screen where you can end the call, try turning on airplance mode for 30 seconds, and then turning airplane mode off.
If it still has not cleared, try restarting the iPhone by holding down the power button and home button until you see the Apple logo.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro X NAG SCREEN won't go away

I have legitmate licenses for this software, installed with the license key and all is well but the "register your software" nag screen comes up every single time the software is launched. My users don't want to get email from Adobe, they don't want mailings and they DON'T WANT TO REGISTER. Is there any way short of giving away all of your personal information to get this nag screen to go stop coming up?
    -Chris

I always register and you do not have to get junk mail from Adobe. However, company should want to have the software registered in its name. If you have problems with the software and/or need to get the licenses at a later time, this will put the license number into Adobe's database which your company can retrieve at a later time. I might suggest your company provide the users with a name and/or email address your company would like to use:
User Name: Your Company IT Department, [email protected]
I do believe eventually the software will either stop asking you to register or ask you if you want not to register. But I cannot be sure since I register all my software.

  • TX problem - tap function, keyboard screen won't go away?

Ok, I just use my TX to hold pictures & music, to play games when I'm bored waiting, and for the calendar/contact, which I sync with both my work computer (Windows Home XP) and my home computer (Apple iBook G4). I do not use the writing function much at all. I keep it safe and snug in a Rhinoskin metal case. I have no software on the Palm that didn't come from Palm.
Some time ago, the tap function started to degrade (I couldn't reach the bottom of the large screen and it would register taps higher than where I actually tapped) and the blasted silkscreened graffiti pad was permanently up - the Palm couldn't see my tap to turn off the silkscreen at all. I can't get my typewriter screen either, just the 3-way split screen for graffiti.
OK, this was annoying, but I could still do most of what I bought my Palm for. Lately, however, the tap function seems to get into a permanent loop - I've done warm resets, soft resets, and a hard reset, and the blasted thing won't get out of the tapscreen-loop function.
Question 1: is digitizer the tapscreen reset function I see mentioned elsewhere?
Question 2: I have a huge problem with going to off-ball websites to find repairs for a Palm product. Doesn't Palm have a fix for this? Or does Palm really and truly endorse its users going to third-party sites for simple servicing issues?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
If you have correctly performed a Hard Reset (where you get the screen warning that data will be deleted, press "UP" on the navigation pad to answer YES and proceed?), and then after the Hard Reset but BEFORE you Hotsync your TX back to your desktop, the TX still behaves badly, then the digitizer (touchscreen) is going bad.
The TX comes with a 1 year warranty. If it's still within the warranty period (or if you bought an extended warranty), contact Palm by phone to commence a warranty repair.  The phone technician will walk you through the Hard Reset procedure one more time while you're on the phone, to confirm that it does not correct the problem.
If it is *out* of warranty, you can still have Palm replace the digitizer, but you can have the job done for much less from one of several third-party vendors (neither of which are "off-ball" whatever that phrase means) such as www.pdaparts.com or www.usedpdaparts.com . I recently replaced two Palm TX digitizers myself with brand new digitizers purchased from www.pdaparts.com for $60 each, even though both TXes were still under warranty. The new glass digitizer is much better and should be more reliable.
I don't know whether Palm endorses users going to third-party vendors or not (I don't work for Palm, I'm just a volunteer here)...I assume they would prefer to receive the income generated by repairing your device if it is out of warranty. But if it's out of warranty, then it's all about your money anyway so you should use whomever you choose to do the repair.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
