Gray Source Video Displayed

In imovie 11, with Snow Leopard on the computer, the source videos (which are on a external hard drive) show up as solid gray in the imovie source video panel. If I click on a gray area I can get the video to play, but I dont know where I am in the video until then. Any suggestions?

Thank you for you're relpy and help Hunt. I appreciate and understand you're hint.
Though it is still weird for me that the 'bad' way PrPro renderes vector art (images and type) differs when different background footage is used.
The render quality of type and vector art is completely different with different background footage. This means my customer will get ugly type and logo's on webmovies with footage from camera X, and smooth type and vector art with footage from camera Y. Both with the same final dimensions after rendering thru the same set of settings.

  • Any way to display time code for source video?

I don't see any way to get AE to display the embedded timecode of a source video.  AE does know this, as you can see it by looking at the metadata for a video.
Does anybody know a plugin that does this, or has anyone written an expression already to do it, using the timecode window effect?
    :<)McFrisco

As explained, AE does not expose this stuff. not to plug-ins, not to expressions. It's a long-standing issue, but can't be helped. In addition to using the TC effect, it may alos help to set the composition start time to the in-point time of the clip. Just a thought: Another way would be to take a detour via Premiere - apply the TC effect set to Media as source, import the Premiere stuff as DynamicLink items.

  • How do I change the aspect ratio of source video in the event library?

I’ve imported video to iMovie 08 from a Canon Mini DV MD235 video camera. The video is recorded in widescreen format and plays back in widescreen when viewed from the iMovie event library (prior to doing any video editing). However, when I delete rejected frames from any particular video clip in the event library the video clip is automatically pillarboxed (i.e. switched from widescreen to 4:3 format). This squashes the video horizontally, stretches it vertically and leaves vertical black bars to the left and right of the video during playback. This automatic change in aspect ratio is occurring to the source video in the event library.
I’d be grateful for any help / advice on how I can convert the edited clips back to widescreen aspect ratio, so they display in the *event library* as they did when first imported into iMovie.

I don’t really want to clog up my hard drive with unwanted video and it’s easier to edit it from within iMovie.
Have you considered manually importing only portions of the clips you actually plan to use? Or, if you must import the entire clip, have you considered trimming externally in an application like MPEG Streamclip which will allow you to set frame level in/out points and then perform a "Save As..." operation that stores the select range of frames to an MOV file container retaining the proper flag?
Is there anything I can do from within iMovie to activate the 16:9 setting for these as yet unedited clips, so the same pillarboxing doesn’t happen?
Not sure what you mean by "unedited" here. If the files have been destructively split, the flag is gone and there is nothing you can do about it but re-compress. If you mean they are imported but as of yet whole and still contain their flags, then you have two options. The first is to edit non-destrctively within iMovie '08 and the second would be to do the trimming externally.
This second option is really fairly simple. Just close iMovie '08. Open MPEG Streamclip and load a clip you want to trim. Set your in and pout points, select the "Save As..." option, and store the files in the original Events folder with a new name. I would also recommend you perform these trims in their original time sequence so the "creation" date time groups (Finder attributes) are in time order also. When done with the loaded clip either delete it from the "Event" folder or move it to an archival location. When done with the last clip, close MPEG Streamclip, delete the Cache and Thumbnail folders from the Event folder, open iMovie '08 again, and go get a cup of coffee or tea while the files are re-thumbnailing. DO NOT DO THIS TO ANY EVENT WHICH CONTAINS FILES ALREADY USED IN ANY PROJECT. (I.e., this must be done before you start the actual project editing process.)
It seems odd to me that iMovie is doing this.
I suspect that as the application was originally written as an NLE, non-destructive, "by reference" application, the writers/updaters "overlooked" this facet when adding a "destructive" routine and did not provide for checks of this flag nor provide for copying it re-written segments.

  • Source monitor displays a different size to Program monitor in CC2014

I have imported a clip and the source monitor displays a different size in the program monitor?
    Thanks Chris

It looks like your sequence is set up for the wrong size. Select a video file and right click 'New Sequence from Clip' see if that helps. I see that your video material is HD did you set up the sequence to match the earlier stills? that might be bigger than HD? If that is the case make a sequence the size for the video and use 'scale to frame size' for the stills.

  • Missing source video

After importing the video, editing the footage, and then quitting the program, when re-opening iMovie it shows me the edited version created previously, but displays a "missing source video" note in the playback screen.
If I re-import the original video all is well, but that is not always possible.
What gives? Am I overlooking the obvious? Am I mental?

Your Project file (it is actually an RCPROJECT file) is a text file that provides links to the video in the events, in and out points for each clip in your project, audio, titles, transitions, etc.
You can open the RCPROJECT file in a text editor and try to see where the project thinks the Events should be. BBEDIT works well, but TEXTEDIT will also work.
Be sure to make a backup of your project before trying this. YOu can use control-click "Open With" and select the text editor of your choice.

  • Installed Premiere Pro CS4 but video display does not work?

I just got my copy of CS$. After installing Premiere I found two things that seem very wrong:
    1) video display does not work, not even the little playback viewer next to improted film clips located on the project / sequence window. Audio works fine.
    2) the UI is way too slow for my big beefy system.
My pc is a dual boot Vista-32 and XP system with 4GB of memory installed and nvidia geforce 280 graphics board with plenty of GPU power. The CS4 is installed on the Vista-32 partition. My windows XP partition on the same PC with Premiere CS2 works great and real fast.
Any ideas how to solve this CS4 install issue?
    Ron

I would like to thank Dan, Hunt, and Haram:
The problem is now very clear to me. The problem only shows up with video footage imported into PP CS4 encoded with "MS Video 1" codec. So this seems to be a bug. The codec is very clearly called out and supported within various menues but video with this codec just will not play in any monitor or preview window. In addition the entire product looks horrible with respect to performance while PP CS4 trys its best to play the video. Audio will start playing after about 30 seconds. And once in awhile part of video shows up at the wrong magnification before blanking out again.
My suggestion to the Adobe team: fix the bug and add some sample footage to the next release so new installations can test their systems with known footage.

  • The quest for a good multi-source video workflow

I frequently have to mix together several sources, and the Multi-Camera Source Sequence in Premiere Pro should in theory be the best way to go.
However, it's seriously underdeveloped and for a single camera with separate audio, I end up doing a sequence instead.
Mix and scrub audio in Audition, tag and comment source video in Prelude, import both to Premiere Pro and put them together on a sequence so I can use that sewuence as a source for other sequences.
Why don't I use a multi-camera sequence? Because you have to tag syncronization points before you put everything together, because audio and video is often recorded out of sync, with several video recordings per audio recording etcetera. It ends up a mess. We don't live in an ideal world, and not wanting to waste time (and make the talent lose focus) organizing things, recording happens pretty much on the fly with all that includes in differing methods, ideals and so on. We need to know how to cut resources (and this includes not using the most exåensive editing tools) but there's always room for improvements.
I like to slap everything loosely together post-production and fine-sync on audio waves on the run, but this means you can adjust the multi-camera source sequence after you have put it together.
This isn't possible in Premiere Pro, at least not without putting it into a sequrnce first and that's the next step you want to do after all the syncronizing is done, not something you want to while cutting up the sources in a sequence.
I believe most of what I need for this is already programmed but it's mostly a matter of politics. Just please understand, synchronizing and preparing sources is different from working with a sequence, but it can be a substantial piece of work on it's own and it's not enough to just put it together in a menu and think that's all fine. (And not by far at that.)
What I need is to be able to edit a multi-camera source sewuence on a timeline like I would edit any other sequence. And call it a multi-source sequence, it isn't just video.
Then audio from different sources can be mixed together on the timeline like you do in a sequence, expoerted to audition as a multi-track session for more advanced audio processing (and no, single tracks aren't enough, I often need the real-time effects in audition not just the processing of whole tracks. And I mix together several audio sources, both mono and stereo tracks some from cameras but mostly from a separate, 24-bit audio recorder with inputs from hand or tie mics, environment and perhaps a gun with a boom. (I'm the audio guy with perhaps a camera on the side, others handle the main camera(s).
And video from several cameras can be put together, one track per camera on a timeline and not just one clip per track, one camera can have several clips taken on a timeline.
Then, when all this is put together it can be used as a source, like we use a multi-camera sequence today.
I believe it's possible, and would increase the value of your offers. If this isn't done, I may end up looking for other software.

  • Photoshop cs6 psd saved file video display is degraded from original imported file

I have had some 16mm film converted to avi 1900 by 1080 pixels, 72 pixels/inch. Photoshop displays it ok. Then when I save the file as a psd and open it again the quality of the video displayed is deteriorated from the origional. Then no matter how it is rendered, it deteriates further. I am using a windows 7 computer. I have tried this with an Nvidia Quatro 1800 card and an Nvidia Gforce 760 card.
Why does not photoshop at least keep the quality of the video as origional in a psd file? I can understand offering to degrade the display for faster display, but not the rendering degradation. I have tried rendering at H.264 High Quality and DPX full range 8 bit, they both degrade the quality, even though the origional avi file is also 8 bit depth. Rendering degrades the colors considerably.
Where can I get information on what is going on in photoshop 6 as to how to control how it saves a psd file and more control of the rendered color depth?
    Russell Whitmer
    [email protected]

I have to make a lot of color corrections because this is film taken from the early 40s to the early 50s. I tried doing it in Avid Studio, Pinnicle studeo and Corel Draws Video Studeo which is what Avid Studio became. None of them alow for the amount of correction allowed in Photoshop. I already owned Photoshop 5 so I upgraded to 6 to take advantage of its advances in video. The plan was to break the converted files up in smaller peices so that Photoshop could handle it and use Premier Pro perhaps to do other post production editing. The origional avi files are a movie about 1 hr and 15 min long and another one about 45 min long. The CODEX is MJPG in avi.

  • Satellite L650-1MM - Video display issue

    Greetings from Finland.
So, about a month ago I bought this laptop of mine, Satellite L650-1MM, and I've been wondering what the heck is the problem with video display. Dunno for sure is it a problem with the hardware or just something with the computers settings. I mean, even on youtube, I got so pixelated image when watching some 720p HD videofootage, that it hurts. Here's some evidence: [http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/6623/youtubena.jpg] And yes, I got the latest Flash Player plug-ins and all, so that couldn't be it.
And maybe, possibly, when I watch some ********** movies, tv-series or something, they all looke so pixelated. And I know that there's codecs and all, but I'm positive, that I got all that handled. As a matter of fact, in the beginning I had worse video display, but with codecs I got it a little better. Still, I'm far from satisfied. Now, I've heard that there might be some problems with Windows 7 and video display, but you know, can't be sure.
So, basically I'm here to rule out the possibility, that there might be some problem with the hardware. Could there be? The screen looks just fine, when normally idling and for example surfing the net, but streaming videos or watching some videos, oh man, oh man, it's so pixelated. I got the latest display drivers from Toshiba, BIOS-drivers too. Would it be any help, if I got the latest drivers straight from AMD's site (Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650)? Does that even work? I mean when Toshiba updates their own display drivers and all, and very rarely what I've heard.
    Here's my laptops specs:
    Satellite L650-1MM
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
    BIOS-version 1.80
    Intel Core i5 CPU M460 @ 2.53 GHz
    4096MB RAM
    HDD ~600GB
Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650 version=8.723.2.0
    15"6, 1366x768
    True Color (32-Bit)
Conexant Audio Driver For AMD HDMI Codec version=4.98.26.0
So please, If there's any hint you can give me, I would very much appreciate it!
    edit.
Also, just remembered, that I had one more problem. When connecting HDMI to my 40" HDTV, and when I close my laptop screen, the sound starts to bug, and in some cases video too. So I have to keep my laptop screen open, so I can watch movies without any sound or video problems. What's with that?

    Hi
Please take a look to the settings called Choose what closing lid does. This can be found in the control panel -> power options
On the left you can see this option.
There you should choose Do nothing.
Furthermore in Advanced Power settings you can find the option called Multimedia settings
There is a suboption called When playing video. Both settings should be set to Optimize video quality
    check it out!

  • Hello to all: My iMac has developed a video display problem. It displays everything in cartoon like colors - purple, green, blue. Can this be repaired? Is there a way to output to a different monitor? Thanks in advance!  isplays

    Hello -
My iMac has developed a video display problem. Everything now appears in a strange, cartoonish way. Purples, greens, blues. Can this be fixed, and if so, any idea how much it might cost? Also, could I output to a seperate monitor? I plan to replace the unit , but cannot right now. Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing.
In the Display area, reset it to "Black on white" by clicking that checkbox.
You can also reset it by pressing Command-Option-Control-8

  • How to disable video display but allow audio?

    Hi,
I have been trying to disable the video display on Adobe Flash player, but I want the audio / sound to play without any video supporting it (playing) such as youtube and any other video supported by Adobe Flash. Is this even possible? It will be very much appreciated if I can do this.
    Thank you!

I'm not a hundred percent sure this will work for you since I've never used svideo out on my mac before, but if it works similar to dvi out, then do the following:
    1. Set you tv up as extended desktop rather than mirror. This will allow you to set different resolutions on the internal and external monitors.
    2. When you want to use the TV for front row, drag the Menu bar from the internal monitor to the external monitor in the monitors system pref. This will make your tv the controlling monitor and front row will play on it.
    3. When you finish with front row, drag the menu bar back to the internal monitor.
Again, this works when I have my dvi cable connected to my tv, I'm not sure if a svideo output is treated the same way, though I would think it should be.

  • Source video in iMovie

Got some questions concerning iMovie 8:
    1. When I try to trash "rejected clips", a dialogue box says I can't, and that I don't have enough disk space! I did empty the trash, as the instructions said. I am using an external hard drive to hold the source video.
    2. While experimenting, I trashed a converted movie folder from the 'movie events' folder on the external hard drive (source video). The 'project' pane in iMovie for that movie now has little yellow triangles containing and exclamation point. What's with that?
    3. Does trashing the event folders on my external hard drive have any effect on the 'project' files I've already created and shared in iMovie? I'd like to save some space on that drive.
    Thanks in advance for helping!

    1. When I try to trash "rejected clips", a dialogue box says I can't, and that I don't have enough disk >space! I did empty the trash, as the instructions said. I am using an external hard drive to hold the >source video.
Then you move rejected clips to trash, you can actually remove rejected frames from clip, while keeping the rest of the clip intact. So I would imagine, imovie would need to make a copy of the clip while writing out the frames that are being kept. May need space for that. Also, it may need a swap file depending on how much memory you have installed. If you have a bunch of applications open and it has been a while since you rebooted, you may not have room for another swapfile.
    2. While experimenting, I trashed a converted movie folder from the 'movie events' folder on the >external hard drive (source video). The 'project' pane in iMovie for that movie now has little yellow >triangles containing and exclamation point. What's with that?
The iMovie project file contains no video. It is a text file that contains pointers to the Event file. Once the Event file is gone, there is nothing to point to. This means you can not do further edits on your project, and you cannot Share your project to additional formats. If you still need to work on your project, drag the Event from the trash back to where it was. If you don't, you can leave it in the trash. Deleting an Event will not trash any copies of your completed movie that you may have placed in the Media Browser or in iTunes.
    3. Does trashing the event folders on my external hard drive have any effect on the 'project' files >I've already created and shared in iMovie? I'd like to save some space on that drive.
No. Trashing Event files does not impact project files.
You can delete Project files, but be aware that you are also deleting your Media Browser copy when you do this.
