  • Problem with Preview and PSD files - random gray square

Hi guys, hope you can help...
I've got a problem with Preview and PSD files.
If I open in Preview both an original jpg straight from my reflex and the photoshop version of the same picture, the psd file presents a gray square (of what it seems unrendered image) in a random area of the photo (sometimes in the center.). The square is quite big...
If I zoom in or zoom out it disappears...if I scroll to another photo and then back to the psd, the square it's there again...sometimes in a different position.
I've tried the same psd on my older iMac with leopard...and got no problem at all.
I suspect it got something to do with my Ati...
(this is the second iMac 27...the first went back for gray banding on the lcd screen and flickering and yellow tinge........)
    Thanks for your help.
    DAve.

    maybe I'm onto something...
I've just found out that opening Preview in 32bit mode (instead of default 64bit) works flawlessly with any psd files. If I switch back to 64bit mode, Preview is much faster but the gray square comes back...
It seems like the i7 is much faster than the Ati....
    Any more realistic ideas?

  • When I click on pic, gray square comes up with an exclamation point

My friend got on my computer and uploaded pics from my camera. I don't know what she did, but the pic I want is in the library as a thumbnail, so it looks like its there. But when i click it to edit it or make it larger, instead of the pics coming up, a gray square comes up with an exclamation point inside a dotted like sqare. What's going on?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Dv gray squares blank screen Kona LH final cut pro iTunes

    KONA/AJA conflict with FCP
If anyone outputs their system's sound through a KONA LH card and AJA KL breakout box, it causes gray squares and then the video output goes fully blank when outputing via FireWire / DV to a deck.
I noticed that this problem only occurs when I run iTunes at the same time as FCP. If I change the system sound to the internal speakers (and not the KONA/AJA card), the problem disappears.
I know this is a third party product, but if there are any suggestions to prevent this, it would be appreciated (other than not doing what I am doing--of course . . .

  • Gray square box

I realize this is a bit off topic, but i was wondering if anyone you have had this issue. I was working in FCP the other day and I guess I was trying to do just too much at once and my g5 froze and the only way to power it down was to pull the plug. Holding in the power button didn't work. Now when I boot up, the computer shows the apple logo for about 1/2 second then a gray square box. The gray square stays on the screen until I reach my desktop. Computer boots to the desktop fine and i am able to use all apps. Does anyone know what this gray box is and if I should be concerned? i have posted an example here: www.suerothberg.com/IMG_3419.JPG
    much thanks.

Onyx is basically the same as running fsck in a nice little app.
Do you have your project files on your system disc? (I do) that's what I would worry about backing up -- desktop setting are easy to redo -- it's the stuff that would take hours/days/weeks to re-do that you want to back up.
Home folder would backup everything (desktop, documents, music, settings etc) but could be fairly large.

  • Intra-Discussions URLs = intermittently awry? ("little gray squares")

    Hi, Friends!
This may be a very naïve question — or it may have been answered 10x over. I've had no success finding a solution after searching herein, so I'm asking for help...
Intermittently, "intra-Discussions links" — "text URLs" I've written as links to other posts — just don't work. Other times, the same formatting works fine. I haven't been able to predict, and QA/QC gets tiresome.
Can someone help me understand? Is it simply a vestige of transition, or server hiccups, or my lack of savvy, or... ?       I'm still learning html, so perhaps the use of both/either XYXYXYX&#XYXYXYX and XYXYXYX#XYXYXYX in post identifiers — seemingly interchangeably — is what has me confused...?
I'm having trouble describing this succinctly. Please bear with me...
    Trying to explain:
      (1) Method One. I prefer this approach for linking to a post that I think is apropos:
I access the URL for a given post (often not the original post in the thread). One way to do this — kindly authored by ali brown — involves editing a "Reply" link to the post you want to reference. I usually use a simple search, requiring that bit of time, but avoiding any errors that might arise from editing. Either way, the resulting format looks like this:
          <a href="http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1902768#1902768"> Bluetooth
            Troubleshooting Checklist</a>"       or   " 1902768&#1902768<font color="000000" "
Externally, this link works fine — and it usually does internally, too. (It works now, too — <i>after</i> I edited it until my eyes crossed.)
<font color="000066">But sometimes, that method goes wacky. I'll have trouble posting an edited post, or discover that the link is dysfunctional while I'm checking through a post for accuracy. Going back to the Editor, I'll discover that — in these cases — the second post ID (in the above case, the 1902768 after the #) has been replaced by two solid gray squares. No amount of retrying, retyping, pasting-in to be sure of accuracy, etc. fixes the problem. The only alternative I've come up with is to manually delete the squares — ending up with a link to the original post of the thread.
But that doesn't accomplish what was intended, because then a reader has to scan the entire thread to locate the specific post. When that happens, I substitute...
      (1) Method Two. When I "have to live with" this snafu, I'll go back to a format modeled after the "old" Discussions. For this example, this would be:
          <a href="http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1902768"> [ "Bluetooth
Troubleshooting Checklist," Dean Pahl, Mar 11, 2006 10:33 pm ]</a>
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Dean
Edit: Egad! The problem happened again as I was editing and correcting this post! (Even though it'd been working fairly well lately...) In fact, it resulted in cutting off 1/2 of the post untll I went back and edited — a few times, as it turned out...

    Thanks grandly, Niel!
So, to confirm my understanding — simply editing out the ampersand (if it appears in the string) will resolve the difficulty?
    If I may, a few follow-up questions...
    (a) I'd thought this more "random"... tried testing by entering a URL into Safari's address box both including the "&#" and then deleting the "&." Both worked. Perhaps something in the Discussions' software intermittently conflicted with this — or perhaps consistently, and my observatioins were imperfect? I'm pretty familiar with the use of html "character entities" — is that equivalent terminology to what you've called "declaring a Unicode glyph?"
    (b) An example for clarity —> Let's say I jump to the Using Apple Discussions »» Feedback About Discussions main page, and search for < Niel   "Re: Intra-Discussions URLs = intermittently awry? ("little gray squares")" >. Then, following the link back to your post above, I can copy its URL and paste it into an html link within another message. Unfortunately, what's returned ends with "jspa?messageID=1950955&#1950955" — i.e., the character string that may be misinterpreted and cause the misbehavior.
I'm going to test this out now, using both formats...
Edited to add:   Interesting... Both formats worked fine to link back to your post — from within this message and from the same link in a TextEdit file. However, when I returned to the Discussions' Editor, the entire string following the first "1950955" morphed into two gray squares. I suppose these are squares just like what happens with an improper key "mapping" — returning to the mis-identification of an html character entity.   It may be that what I'd perceived as "random" was related to whether I used the Editor. So it seems I've proved your assertion in full, and found a correlation about how.
Was the "?" part of the string added because it was derived from a search?
My curiosity essentially stems from wanting to simplify posting and  learn more about how & why. Perhaps you could recommend a reference that might help? Before posting originally, I checked a few tutorials such as W3 Schools' — but couldn't find what you've so cogently explained...
    Thanks again!

  • Gray squares around mouse pointer

We have a macbook pro 15".  Occasionally the computer stops responding and there are gray squares around the mouse pointer as we move the cursor.  I called tech support and they said it was out of warrantee.   Any help here is appreciated..  I tried resetting the macbook (taking out the battery etc.) still have the problem.
    thanks

Arghh - Universal Access, Zoom, Box follows mouse pointer!
Don't know why I never spotted it earlier - maybe because it's not something I've ever used or needed to switch on.
Weird it was on after the update though!

  • Print illustrations on white background;  eliminate gray square/rectangle behind images

working on desktop publishing project that will be printed in black white only. Have photoshop images that will be used as illustrations. when I put these images into InDesign and print them, a gray square/rectangle appears behind the image. I cannot eliminate the gray background. it is essential to the project that the images print directly on paper without the background gray. have tried several youtube video lessons but none has been completely successful yet.

I don't quite understand..........I'm using iwork pages, I click on shapes (square), I fill square with pink, I click on media (clips are stored there), picture of butterfly is than place within the pink square. However I would like it so that the picture of the butterfly layout only with the pink background. I don't want the white background. Am I missing something, or I'm just not being clear? Thanks for any further assistants.

  • What is that gray square in Keynote thumbnails?

The new Keynote 6 has blue triangles in the lower right to indicate the slide has a transition
It has 3 little bullets in the lower left to indicate is has a build
But what is that gray square in the upper right corner? I see it on half my slides and I can't get it to show up or go away. I've tried adding various things to a blank slide and can't get it to show up.
I'm sure it's something simple but this is a classic example where a tooltip would save the day....

Figured it out. The gray square indicates the slide has presenter notes.
    Boy, that wasn't easy....

  • Fluid Grid Layout- HTML5 video buttons become gray squares Android

I am attempting to use Fluid Grid layouts for a simple smartphone/tablet acessible video page.  I am in Dreamweaver CS6 Cloud (updated).  The buttons for play and full screen mode are shown as gray squares on my Android phone. It works fine in other browsers (OS:Windows 7, Chrome, FireFox and IE. I have not tested iOS or iPhones). I spent a day trying variations trying to get it to work properly on the Android and finally built a whole new HTML5 (non Fluid Grid) and it works.  But that has issues with formatting, where comes in small and has text not filling the page for Android.  I am trying to avoid people having to zoom in and out to see the page.  The Fluid Grid brings the page in the way that I want it.  My guess is that the Fluid Grid boilerplate or the respond.min.js is causing the conflict.  As this is a touchy new venture into Adaptive Design I have left these files alone.
Here is the fluid grid (stripped of formatting) http://www.oha-edu.org/Video/v1.html
Here is the HTML5 video page where the buttons show up.  http://www.oha-edu.org/Video/2.html

  • Imovie11 clips show as gray squares

Two events loaded in  One from a Canon Dslr,  edits fine  One from a JVC 700  JVC  footage would not load  so I converted it using Aiseesoft    JVC footage would load into Events  but when I highlight it to move to edit it turns to gray squares.  I have edited in the past with the JVC un converted in Imovie 9.

Hooray again! Old Toad's 2nd option for getting rid of the exclamation marks did work for me.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
Now all is well and I am very happy. Thanks!
    Gratefully,

  • The dreaded Gray square

I copied the Iphoto library(about 11,000 pictures) from my Minimac to a folder on my Macbook pro. I then replaced the new folder for the one already on the ProBook (named it IPhoto Library) and saved the older IPhoto library in a folder with another name. I opened Iphoto and all the pictures appeared as thumbs across the top of Iphoto but when I go to edit I get the dreaded gray square with the explanation point for most of the pictures . The only ones that come full size in the edit mode are those that were previously edited!! ie those that will have the option to “revert to original” in the menu bar. I’ve read many of the other posting regarding this issue - it seems to be pretty common - but don’t think they will work. So, how do I get my full size pictures back?

  • I just downloaded a movie and when I try to watch it, I just get an image with white and gray squares. ????  Sound is ok

Hello:    I just downloaded a movie but I cannot any video when trying to watch it.  I just get n image of white and grey squares.   Sound is ok  ???

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Just a gray square

I am developing a sketch pad applet and have tested it several times from the "run project" option in JBuilder. Everything looks fine there. Now when I try to use the applet through an html page the aplet appears as a gray box, nothing more. The Internet Explorer says that the class has started so there are no exceptions thrown. What is the major problem? My main class implements several other classes and have many instances of my own classes inside it. All classes are copied to the directory where the main class is put.

When I look at the java console in Internet Explorer I
see whats the problem. Its all about getting access to files on the
    server. I get a java.net.SocketPermission.
In my code I call getImage(url) to get an image from my server.
I set the image file properties with chmod 777 but it doesn't
seem to be enough when I use an absolute path to the server.
And Im not able to use a relative path as an url in my code.
How can I get permission to my files on the server from
    the applet classes.
