Grayed out wifi network on ipad

I'm trying to connect to wifi at home on my ipad (have previously connected successfully) and under settings the wifi connection spot is grayed out.  Any suggestions?  I've already reset the ipad and it still hasn't helped.

See:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
Frequently it is due to a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I've reset the password a few times and know I am using the correct one. I get the same error on both my iPad and iPhone. Both see the network but maybe there is a problem with the router. I've also reset that a few times with no luck. Thank you.

  • TS1559 4s iphone grayed out wifi and have taken all steps and still no wifi

I have turned the phone on and off. Reset the network. Reset the entire phone and still no wifi. When I updated it has never worked properly.
I have read that many people are having this problem. Why does Apple not have a fix for this.  It is obviously something wrong with the phone.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to reset the phone to get back Wifi let me know.

Grayed out WiFi is almost always a hardware failure that requires replacment or repair of the phone.  If you tried everything in the article that led you here without success, take to to Apple or an Apple authorized service provider.
FYI, do NOT try the "freezer" or "hairdryer" methods you may see posted.  At best, they are only temporarly fixes and are likely to cause more damage.

  • Default DNS grayed out in Network Preferences

In my Network Preferences, my router address/gateeway is listed twice as a default DNS. Maybe once from Tiger and once more from Leopard?
This is probably a Verizon thing
The problem is that they are grayed out and cannot be removed by normal means AFAIK.
My console reports that the same DNS is repeated - a minor but annoying item.
It there any reason for me not to simply comment out one of these pesky DNS in the
    /etc/resolv.conf
    file?
I have already added two more OpenDNS in the Network Preferences with no problem, and they properly show up in the resolv.conf file as 1 and 2, with the default DNS being 3 and 4.
Why are these default DNS grayed out in Network Preferences?
How did they get there in the first place?
Is there a proper place to remove them or at least un-gray them?
Will commenting out or removing one of the dupes in the resolv.conf file hose anything?

Have you got something like 'local DNS caching' turned on in the Verizon? Commenting out of .conf may not stick, I think DHCP will just rebuild it.
I think it's the Verizon router offering the router IP as a fake DNS, which then passes onto the real Verizon DNS down the pipe. Verizon has one of those DNS that trap 404's and offer assistance.
I think that Leopard looks for 2 DNS minimum and therefore takes the Verizon router number 2 times. It's the first time I have seen a router use its own IP as a DNS.
When I switch to the Cable system, the duplicate fake DNS get replaced with the real cable DNS almost immediately, so you are right in that it is dynamic, and editing the conf file would do nothing.
At least I now understand what's happening. It has to be that Leopard asks for 2 DNS or that Verizon router offers the same IP twice.
I will have to look into the Verizon router a bit more to see if I can do something

I tried all suggestions fo a grayed out wifi toggle and nothing seems to be working. Any other suggestions?

I had this problem last month.  I ended up having to get a new iPhone 4S.  It's a very, very common problem and in my opinion it should be covered by Apple for free since it is so popular and is an obvious hardware defect especially in the iPhone 4S.
So I suggest you order a new iPhone ($230 with no warranty) ($50 with Apple Care+).  And while you wait for your new iPhone to come you could back up your iPhone and try some of the YouTube fixs.  I put mine in a plastic bag (off with no air in the bag) in the freezer for 30 minutes, pulled it out, turned it back on, let the iPhone thaw out in the bag, and it then worked again for over a week before it died again.  But I would only try that if you knew you had a new iPhone on the way.  My cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth all went out so I had nothing to lose.

If no change after restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem with the wireless card or with something else.

  • 3rd Gen Ipod touch 5.1.1 update grays out wifi

After updating my 3rd Gen ipod touch, I can no longer use wifi. The wifi box is grayed out. I have reset the network connection settings, and have reset the ipod back to factory settings and still nothing. I see that this has happened to lots of iphone users but havent heard much about ipod touch. I wont even think about updating my iphone until a bug fix comes out. So far Apple is saying it is a hardware issue, but theres no way. No way thousands of people are having a hardware issue just after a software update. Can anyone help?
Also now only about 20% of my songs will load on the ipod and the screen is frozen. Great

One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • HT1430 iPhone only recognizes one home wifi network but ipad recognizes both

I have two home wifi networks. My iphone only recognizes one wifi which is the slower. Ipad recognizes both. I've turned router off and on and turned iphone off and on and makes no differences. Also ipad used to pick up unsecured wifi networks but no longer does
which I don't want but wonder why that suddenly changed

    Hey Dann4ever,
I would follow these steps for when you're unable to locate a Wi-Fi network on your iOS devices:
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
Tap i and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Verify that the network is available by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi and choosing from the available networks.Note: It may take a few seconds for the Wi-Fi network name to appear.
Move closer to your wireless router (access point) and attempt to locate the Wi-Fi network.
If you do not see the network you would like to join, you may be attempting to connect to a hidden network. Learn how to join a hidden network.
Supported Wi-Fi configurations vary by iOS device model. Find out which standards your device supports3.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings

  • How did non-tech daughter wipe out Wifi Network?

Either my daughter was visited by tech savy aliens, or there was a HUGE glitch in Airport Extreme security. Yesterday, out ISP reported a problem in the system and we had no internet service for a few hours. I was away from home when service was restored. When I got home, I noticed my iPad had no wifi. I went to settings to check and discovered the wifi network name and password I set up two years ago, no longer existed. In its place, was a wifi password protected network named, "Jane Doe's Wifi Network" (substituting Jane Doe for my daughter's name). At first I thought she might be running a hotspot off of her iPhone. But with her iPhone in hand, Personal Hotspot was turned off. I won't go into details of our conversation, but suffice it to say, she had no clue why or how she had done this and gladly gave me the password for this new network. Because of Parental Controls, she has no administrative rights or access to System Preferences on her computer, which is named Her Name. Big hint there I thought. Is it possible after the Internet was restored, she was presented with a screen that asked her if she wanted to set up a new network (defaulting to the name of her computer) and assign it a password? Shudder.
Trying to resolve the issue from our iMac, I discovered that I was unable to delete this new network, our old network had all but vanished although the keychain password for it existed. I deleted the new network password from Keychain and attempted to remove it from the list of networks, but first had to ADD it to the list of networks. I then unchecked remember this network. Even then, this alien network named after my daughter continued to exist, and I could not recreate our old network no matter how many different ways I tried. I also got into the "this Airport has a personal IP address...." so tried doing all of the above again, as well as creating a new location. New / old network would never show up in the list of available networks. Now after midnight, I gave it up and began fresh this morning. I am now looking at my airport extreme setup guide to see how I can re-set it, hoping somewhere in the 41 pages of this 4"x4" manual I will find the solution.
But more importantly, I want to know how this could have happened. It scares the **** out of me that 1-if my daughter could stumble her way through this, anyone else could as well. 2-it will happen again.
Any advice, explanations or suggestions on how to proceed to fix this welcome. Daughter's computer MacBook Pro.
    Thanks,
    Saje

    There are three possibilities here:
    1) The Internet outage somehow reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory defaults. This is rare, but I have seen it happen. In that case, a screen would have appeared on any of the computers that were connected to the network...and there would have been a message that would have asked if the user wanted to re-configure the AirPort Extreme.
If this were the case, and your daughter was on the network at the time, AirPort Utility would have used your daughter's name as the default wireless network name and asked her to assign a wireless network password.
    2) Your daughter discovered that AirPort Utility on her Mac allowed her access to the settings of the AirPort Extreme and she manually changed the name of the wireless network, also changing the wireless network password. Unless you have a separate "device" password and "wireless network" password, any user that is connected to the network can use AirPort Utility to change the settings on the device.
    3) Your daughter held down the reset button on the back of the AirPort Extreme for 7-8 seconds, which would have reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings, and she then set up a new wireless network on the AirPort Extreme.
As far as fixing things, you can use AirPort Utility to manually change the name of the wireless network and password back to the old settings, or change them to set up a new wireless network name and password.
If you are not sure how to do this, we'll need to know what operating system your Mac is using to provide the correct steps, since AirPort Utility has different interfaces depending on the operating system of the Mac.

  • New download of keynote files when changing wifi network with iPad

When i change the Wifi Network with my ipad3 (without 3G) it always starts to download the keynote, numbers and pages files from the iCloud. You can't open any file until its downloaded again, you just see the Folder and the file as a placeholder.
In my opinion this Akers totally no sense. I expect a synchronization between iPad and the iCloud like it woks with mail, kalender.  Even dropbox just downloads the file you select for use. In my case I have 64 files only in keynote, created on the iPad and eaven without changing something it will re download all files from the iCloud before I can use them.
    Anybodydid the same experience ?
Is this a bug or a really shh.... Feature?

No that's not my experience, it's clearly not working as it should. Perhaps you should restore your iPad.

  • 1st gen iPod touch wifi connection issue, grayed out wifi area in settings

I have a first generation iPod touch and I'm having difficulty connectiong to wifi.  It tells me there is "no wifi" and the wifi area in settings is grayed out.  I have never encountered this problem in the seven months I've owned this device.  My wifi is currently being used by the other three devices that normally share it with my iPod, and they're running just fine as usual.  I've already tried restoring my iPod, as well as updating my iTunes to the newest possible software, then restarting the computer.  I've looked through all of Apple's troubleshooting guides, to no avail.  Any tips from people who've had the same issue or actually understand technology?  All help is greatly appreciated!
