Grayish stains on wrist rests

I am wondering if this is just from skin oil or if it is a problem with the material... Right now it is very faint but more visible if I look at it from the side. There are 2 circular grayish blotches in the middle of both wrist rests. The right side is bigger and much more visible than the left - I'm thinking that's because the ball of my right wrist sticks out more than my left (it does).
Is this normal? Is there any safe way to clean it off? Or is it a problem that I need to contact AppleCare for?

So, I happened on this thread and was really surprised that my problem was not normal. I thought it was normal that there were marks. But I guess not. I've had my macbook since July and it has marks all over it. Especially visible on the A key and also when you look at it from the side like someone else said.
What I'm wondering is if they can replace it for FREE because it's a defect and I REALLY don't have the money to spend on it. My power cord is just now flipping out on me and I'm probably going to have to spend needless amounts on that as well.

  • PISMO Powerbook G3: Pressure on wrist rests turns off

    Hi,
I just revived an old Pismo and it's working great, but I'm still stuck with the same problem. Whenever I put pressure on the wrist rest near the track pad, the computer immediately shuts off. If I put pressure anywhere else, including on all the items under the keyboard, I have no problems, so I feel like I've narrowed it down to some sort of loose connection/cracked board or something under or near the trackpad.
Is there anyone that's into Pismo's that might have an idea of what might be causing it (and how to get to it--I've been reading a great take-apart tutorial here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum7.html).
    Thanks!
    Bob

    Bob,
Here is a picture of the top case which includes the trackpad, etc:

Here is a picture of the power board which lies under the trackpad:

If you were to disconnect the trackpad ribbon cable, you may be able to eliminate the top case. See step #32 here:

You might also try this: Grab each side of the powerbook with the left and right hands away from the sensitive area. Now provide a little twisting and bending to see if the 'book shuts down.

  • Wrist rest for Wireless Keyboard?

Now that I've switched from a PC to an iMac with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, my old wrist rest is much too thick. Can you recommend a wrist rest that does the job yet is suitably thin to match the low profile of the front of the Apple Wireless Keyboard?

We do have another option. Starting tomorrow, we'll be liquidating our "B-Stock" (or "factory second") imperfect large wrist rests. These units tend to have rough edges and we can't sell them at full price. If you want to buy one and trim it to size, you can use coupon code 2NDGRADE at Amazon (MurrayE has the link above) starting on 9 December 2011 and get one for only $7.99.
Since there's not an easy way to contact forum members, just post a note here if you're interested, turn on email notifications for thread updates, and we'll post a message when the wrist rests for Magic Trackpad are available.
    Thanks everyone!

help! My macbook has been freezing whenever i accidentally hit/bang the lower left wrist rest area. This is really annoying! It happens to frequently.. even when I want to shift my laptop from table to table. Even a slight bang would freeze the whole thing

Take the computer to Apple store and have it checked out.

  • Apple wireless keyboard wrist rest

    Hi,
We are in the process of moving from the PC to Apple and I would like to ask if most users use a keyboard wrist rest with the Apple wireless keyboard? I was looking at the http://www.amazon.com/3M-Wrist-Keyboard-Antimicrobial-Compact/dp/B000X4WCJU 3M Compact wrist rest however I was concerned that it may be too high for the low profile Apple wireless Keyboard.
    Thanks for your advice.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Most ergonomic experts do not recommend wrist rests, and never for actually resting your wrists on them. Constant pressure on your wrists, especially while moving your fingers, is the road to carpal-tunnel syndrome. A "wrist" rest should actually be used only for the heels of your hands, and then only as an actual rest and not used while typing. You should type with your hands and wrists suspended, not resting on a surface, and with your forearms roughly parallel to the ground with your wrists straight and your shoulders relaxed. Few people set up their workspace so as to allow this position, but that's the position least likely to result in repetitive-stress injuries.
That in mind, then, using a pad just to rest your arms when not typing, just about any pad should work.
    Regards.

That was the first thing I did. Fortunately, they came off easily and didn't leave residue.

Have you tried sulphuric acid? j/k.
Try iKlear Apple Polish instead: http://www.klearscreen.com/iKlear.aspx
ETA: I remember reading that Apple recommended Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (http://www.mrclean.com/sites/enUS/mrclean/products/newmagiceraser.shtml) to clean the exterior of iBooks. I can't imagine that MacBooks are much different; they seem to be made out of the same kinds of materials.

  • Apple acknowledges discoloration as Manufacturing defect...

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Apple-Acknowledges-MacBook-Stains-As-Manufacturin g-Defect-28129.shtml
    Is this true?

Update, I just received my second MacBook today.
First one is week 20 but I really can't remember the surface on the wrist rest whether it smooth or rough, but it think it's smooth.
And my second MacBook, week 25, got it today.
The wrist rest is smooth, everything is PERFECT.
The keyboard is quite a bit better than the first one, I totally satisfied with it.
no moo, whine, display artifact at this time.
And the reason I returned the first one is because of the Hinge, it create some noise and not so smooth.

  • Cracks in Macbook case

This has been discussed before....from me actually...anyway, I had the cracks near the wrist "rests" on my black Macbook...brought it to Apple and they replaced it under warranty...that was less than a year ago...now I have it again....am I under warranty still?

If the unit is more that a year old and you don't have AppleCare, I doubt you will get it fixed for free.

  • Questions on heat, hard drive, graphics 1.5GHz

I am considering a new Powerbook 12 inch to replace the 15 inch TiBook I just traded in at Powermax -- stretching the budget to the current 15 is tough, especially when there still seem to be at least some firmware questions if not hardware -- and the small 12 is tempting. Whatever it is, it has to be a Mac, and due to monitor spanning, it has to be a Powerbook.
    So some questions.
How is the 12 inch these days for heat? Obviously heavy hard drive activity (such as all the demos they run on it in the Apple Store) will heat up the left side wrist rest given where the hard drive is, but how is it for typing on in actual day-to-day use?
Anyone tried the 100GB 5400RPM BTO? Of course the 80GB 5400 is standard, but is there any significant speed difference between the two (denser platters usually mean faster transfers).
How about the Nvidia 5200 graphics card? Any bottlenecks I should be aware of compared to a Radeon 9550/9600/9700?
And, any difference in durability compared to the 15?
Lastly, how about the display? They seem a bit dim in the store, but they also seem like they have a jiggered stock profile. How about when you hardware profile it properly (I have a ColorVision Spyder2Pro)?

As far as video chipsets go, a 5200 is not going to run with the ATi 9600 or better in terms of fps for the gpu, I'm not sure about the 9550. The 9600XT, and I'm using one in a desktop, roughly runs with the 5700 Ultra and a little behind the 5900 in nvidia's lineup. I'd say as far as notebook gpu's go, all those gpu's are dated and are in need of revising. The 5200 is a couple years old and so are the ATi gpu's, that is for desktops. But when you look @ PB specs, a 9700 128 MB video vs 64 MB FX5200, the 9700 is way ahead.

  • Hi - I am new here: I need help and advice on the White Macbook - thanks.

    Hi all,
I'm a new member to this forum + I am soon to be a new user of the Macbook.
I have ordered my new White 2.16 Macbook with an upgraded 2GB RAM & an upgraded 16GB HDD.
I have some questions which I would like answered please:
    1) How likely is it that my macbook will get the cracks near the wrist rests?
    2) How likely is it that my white macbook will discolour? Are the latest 2007 range also facing discolouration like last years models? How soon does the discolouration start to show?
    3) Is the macbook a SOLID build? Or does it feel cheap when you touch and feel it?
    4) How likely is it that the outer glossy body will get stratched? I remember the previous Ipods were poor quality and got stratched even by normal use or by putting it in your EMPTY pocket.
    5) How likely is it that I will encounter hardware issues?
    6) Is the Macbook AS GOOD AS Apple say it is?
Reason I am asking all these questions is because I am investing quite abit of money in a never before used item and with a company who I have never dealt with.
But having read all the issues and problems with apple products one has to ask these simple questions.
I mean even if you go out and buy a real cheapo laptop you would almost never come accross these poor quality issues in such a short time period has Apple users are stating.
Thanks, I look forward to the answers.
PC   Windows Vista   Awaiting delivery of my new White Macbook: 2.16GHz - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2GB memory - 160GB hard drive.

    1) It's impossible to guess the likelihood of cracks. We don't have the numbers.
    2) Discolouration seems to have been a problem specific to some earlier ones.
    3) The MacBook is solidly built, but still feels more fragile than a MacBook Pro or even an iBook.
    4) the outside plastic is easily scratched.
    5) impossible to say, we don't have the numbers
    6) Yes, it is that good. Great computer.
Any question you wrote which includes the words likely or likelihood is impossible for users to answer meaningfully, since we don't have access to any good numbers. Just from watching this discussion board, it might appear that cracks and discoloration are likely, but since Apple has sold millions of these things, these issues might really be measured as a small fraction of a percent. We just can't know.

  • No longer under warranty, how does pricing work?

Seen as it's impossible to contact Apple directly regarding technical issues regarding MacBook, I'll have to ask here.
Firstly, I know the issues with my MacBook are hardware related I've spent relentless hours trying to fix them with thousands of different software methods, so I don't need any advice with that.
I brought my MacBook in the states, it's an early 2008 issue, so the keyboard and wrist-rest's have all discoloured and the housing is practically falling apart.
One of the RAM slots has failed, so I'm running on a measly 500MB's of RAM, it's not the RAM that has the issue but the slot as I've tested both pieces of RAM in each slot.
The DVD drive no longer burns, it's not a software issue as I've restored the OS, the error I get is the dreaded "Laser power level could not be calibrated for this media" I get this with standard CD-R's now and not just DVD-DL disc's, I've tried the 'language change voodoo' a PRAM reset, disc cleaning with little to no luck, I shouldn't have to do this EVERYTIME I wish to burn a disc.
So basically, I want these three things fixed with the Mac, as I'm no longer under warranty I can understand that I will need to pay. Should I contact the nearest 'Premium Reseller' of Apple products? Will they charge more at the resellers than Apple will? Is it a standard one off payment to fix all three?
Any help at all will be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Seen as it's impossible to contact Apple directly regarding technical issues regarding MacBook
You've called their tech support numbers? (44) 0844 209 0611 in the UK, 800-275-2273 in the US. I've never found them particularly difficult to reach, though depending on call volume you may have to wait on hold for a while. You can also go to any retail Apple Store in your area.
should I contact the nearest 'Premium Reseller' of Apple products? Will they charge more at the resellers than Apple will?
I'd suggest you shop around. There's no standard pricing, so you may find that repair pricing will vary between service centers. Repairs at an Apple Store are more likely to be higher than the price charged by an independent service center, but not always, so get estimates from a couple of places, at least, and decide from there. If you're in the US, you can look for service centers on this web page:
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
If you have to replace the logic board, the keyboard and the DVD drive, it's almost certainly going to be more cost-effective (and perhaps even less expensive, particularly if you go for a refurbished MacBook) to just buy a new computer.

  • Mac Book Pro  doesn't like my iTunes choices? HD Spinning out of sync

Started my iTunes library and have been loading in over 100+ CD's. Now I have a very loud constand whirring sound, comming from the area just below the power button. If I put pressure on and around the power button compressing the whirring disc, the  sound becomes less intense and has also actually ceased, however it does appear again.  I'm thinking bad hard drive, but I don't know.  The Mac had memory boosted about a month ago, and is a 2008 model.

In every MBP, the hard drive is in one of the front corners under the wrist rest, not back near the power button.
The only moving parts in a MBP that can ever make the kind of noise you describe are the optical drive, the fan(s) and the hard drive. If your optical drive is empty and you're sure the sound originates nearer to the back of the computer than the front, it's a fan.

  • Is my MacBook a "lemon?"

Hi all, I've been a loyal and die-hard apple user/ customer for almost 20 years now and for the first time have started having serious problems with a machine that's making me want to jump ship.
I purchased a brand new MacBook 13 inch from Macmall on 9/19 and by 9/23 it was no longer recognizing the battery (got an x icon through it, nothing would help). After multiple trips and hours at the apple store the geniuses determined it was the logic board (funny since my G3's logic board had just shorted that week, spurring the purchase of this new one). So, I hadn't even owned it a week and it was out of my hands getting a new logic board, heatsink, etc. Well, 2 weeks later (yes, I got it back just yesterday on 10/9) I get it back and now it doesn't recognize the airport card. It simply says there's no airport hardware to be found. I searched the forums and did all the recommended stuff. Now, sometimes the airport will appear, sometimes it won't. And when it does, it won't receive any signals, no matter how strong (even the signal at my grad school).
So, as you can imagine, I'm pretty ****** off that my "repaired" MacBook came back now not recognizing another thing, it just switched from the battery to the airport card. The apple store will not give me a new one since I didn't buy it from them, and MacMall won't give me a new one because they want me to go through the apple store/ factory. Basically it's a bunch of finger pointing going on and no one will step up behind their product (if you can call it that) and help me.
As are many, I'm a bit skeptical of these MacBooks now, since I've had nothing but problems since literally the day I got it. However, all of the imacs and ibooks I've had in the past went strong for well over their average lifespan. My instinct is that I don't want to get this one repaired AGAIN, because then what will happen after that problem gets fixed. Am I going to have to go in for repairs every week now? Cause that's what it's been so far. My feeling is I should put my foot down and insist I get a brand new machine, whether from apple or macmall, since it seems I've been sold a lemon. Any thoughts?

    Hi
I've had a similar problem. I bought a black Macbook the day they were launched from the Apple store at Bluewater in the UK. Initially everything was fine, other than a very sharp corner on the bottom case where you open the screen, a badly fitted screen surround that moves and the usual heat issue. In mid September I was using the machine to check for some backup data on a CD-R when the disc I inserted spun up to speed and would not stop. The disc was not shown on the desktop and then the machine froze.
I then powered down the machine and it would not re-start, except for a ding and a grey screen. It never re-started correctly no matter what the apple support or the store tried. It was sent off for repair for just over two weeks. When I collected it they could not tell me what was wrong or what had been repaired, in fact I had some of the worst service in a store that I have ever had. In the end I said to the manager or at least the second person that was sent to serve me, ' You don't give a toss do you ?' and he turned round and said 'No !' So much for them all being Apple employee's.
Anyway back to the repaired Macbook, as the staff at the store eventually found out what had been done. I had a new superdrive, logic boad, bottom case, battery and some heat sink stuff. I did not want the old machine back and wanted a new one but they refused to replace the machine. There must be something wrong with a number of these Macbooks as they had the usual mess of a display at the Bluewater store were all the repaired crap or stuff that had been on display is piled high right as you walk into the store, in fact you almost fall over it all at the door.
The machine seems to working and is cooler than before, but I still have a badly fitted screen surround and now the case creaks on the wrist rest when I type. I don't know if anyone else has had the same issue, and I did complain about it at the time, but the touch pad has gone very smooth and shiny with use, so much so I bought a bluetooth mighty mouse.
One last point of frustration I had with the store was regarding the data back up. As this was quite a new machine I didn't have too much data on it, but I wasn't too sure if I needed any of it, so I agreed to a £35 charge to back it up. I knew that the issue didn't relate to the hard drive, so the data should have been safe, but I thought it would be worthwhile. So when I collected the machine I asked for the CD's or DVD's that the data was copied on. I was told that data was put onto the stores server and was then copied back onto my hard drive. I asked for my money back as I told the assistant that I was not confident that the service had been carried out, but they refused.
For anyone using this service I would be very careful as they take your ID's and passwords, so they could access your data, even on their back up copy. In fact they day of collecting the fixed Macbook I was checking my mail on the said fixed machine and all the items in my in box were displayed for a second or two and then were deleted. So I don't know if the assistant in the store had recovered my data and then deleted the contents of my mailbox as grudge, but thankfully as I have several machine I was able to get all the mail back.
After buying new desktops and notebooks at least every two years or when Apple release something really nice, I don't think I will bother in the future as they seem to have a quality issue on new products.

  • Apple's response to my whiney MBP

Hey fellas. I just got off the phone with Apple and I thought I would relay the fruits of my experience with my MBP.
I bought a 1.83 (week 12) that has the whine under the keyboard that goes away by launching photobooth.
I took it in to an Apple store and the Genius Bar took a look, told me that Apple would replace the machine. He gave me a case # and told me to call Apple to get that set up and done (maybe in part because I bought from a reseller). Anyway, today I call Apple and give them my case number and they said they could not replace it, but I could send it in to repair. As the call got escalated, I finally talked to a product specialist who said "the notes from engineering say that the whine coming from under the keyboard is from an idle"...capacitor?...crap, I forgot exactly what he said it was. Regardless, he said that there is NO REPLACEMENT for the issue- that all MacBooks exhibit this behavior, and it's normal.
The first guy I talked to during the phone call said that the replacement program was over. That they have a quota when a new product comes out that they will replace with and once that quota is filled it turns into repairs. I was kind of upset, since the guy at the Genius Bar told me I would get a replacement, but that abated when engineering said "there is no fix, that's normal."
But I've read posts of some lucky people who have had replacements that actually don't whine. I'm wondering if those people had a different whine that they aren't suffering from now...or are there MBP that really don't exhibit the whine...meaning engineering isn't being completely honest.
Lot's of speculations. But basically, I suppose I'll do the workaround for now and hope that a software/firmware update does the trick.
    MBP 1.83, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well, I had my MBP sent out for repair they changed the logic board and the thermal unit also the keyboard. And it also came back with some scratches and also on the left side at the seam where your arm/wrist rest is loose so it squeeks..plus is was dirty.
Called Apple Care got someone who said they couldn't replace it because it was past 14 days, so I didn't like that answer and then they gave me to a product specialist. He said the they needed a resonable number of attempts to fix it. I ask him what a resonable number was? He couldn't answer. So each time you send it back your without your computer for 10 days. I said just send me a new one. He said he couldn't but if after some undetermined number of returns then he could. So I said just give me a refund. And that he could do. So I'm returning my MBP and going to wait for the second generation of MBPs that don't run so dam hot. Unfortunatley you have to get a little extra firm to have them do anything.
Oh yeah, he also said if he sent out a new one that it could have the heat problem to. And that the Engineers are working on it but DO NOT have A SOLUTION YET.
It's a bumer cause I like the computer. They should make it big enought not to have a heat issue and also to fit a dual layer burner for $3K. I don't need the thinnest computer just one that works comfortably on the desk in the lap etc. without excess heat issue, airport issues, and high pitched noises.
Apple dropped the ball on getting this to market before the bugs were worked out.
So I will wait, check these disucussion boards from time to time until things are running smoother. Good luck to you and don't cave into these folks trying to tell you the heat is ok or the noise, etc....you paid top $$$ expect the best and don't take any bull**.
    Peace,
    Time for a Margarita.
