Great info on these boards-feel like I already have a mini

It's been tough deciding what I want and this board plus the one oriented towards the PBs have been a great help. I hope to be more helpful myself later, but I'm still typing one handed untill my right arm heals.
When I found I could put Mac OS X onto my PB, I seriously considred putting off my mini purchase.
I guess the fact remains I prefer a tower form to a portable comp. since I already have the PB to cover that and am no longer applying to outside jobs, which is the main reason I purchased the PB.
But everything else about the mini suits me perfectly. I am exactly the minimual needs computer user this entry level comp is made for. (that an old mac clone which I am currently using basically meets my needs probably speaks for itself) Soooo... I guess as soon as I locate my mislayed debit card, I'm getting a mini.
Strangly enough, I find out that the mini would suit my parents perfectly. They never take their comp anywhere and want a tiny computer which can be cleared off the desk for other uses. All this my father tells me without knowing the mini exists.
So I'm thinking....hmmm if mini doesn't work out for me, I can always dump it on my parents.
My parents have been getting by with an old mac with 120 MHZ, which is even slow by my standards. But the frustration for them is not how slow it is is but that no printer is compatble with it.

Hello Rotten Apple1,
Perhaps you can purchase a used iMac and printer for your parents. A 120MHz processor is obsolete. But if it works....
Meanwhile, perhaps there is an USB/8-din adapter that will allow a printer to connect to the old Mac. But here again, you are spending money that could be part of a purchase for newer technology. Sorry.

Depends on how you want to use it. Flash storage on the newer macbook and macbook air are built in. A macbook air is the most light weight and a very good machine. It will do all you want it to do unless you are running some very intensive programs. If you go to the apple store on line you can compare  the different macbook pro" and macbook Air's.

  • Firefox won't open, instead a pop-up says something like, "You already have one copy running. You can only use one copy at a time. ( It happens repeatedly (I am using a iMac 10.4.11)

I'm trying to open Firefox because, was told the FireFTP is great to use in getting my (completed on iWeb) Website up and running, but I can't even get Firefox to open up, no matter what I have tried. What is it I am doing wrong or missing?!.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • I feel like I really missed something somewhere...

So I was watching Family Guy last night using Xine (I like menus), and I noticed that the quality was really bad, so I cranked up the deinterlacing, and once my CPU topped 100%, the quality was "acceptable".
But then I was cooking, so the menus annoyed me (it doesn't have a play all button), so I used mplayer with this command: "for i in `seq 2 9`; do mplayer dvd://${i} -dvd-device /dev/hdc -vo xv; done", and the picture quality was perfect (note the lack of any deinterlace filters).
So I wondered why Xine was giving me such crap quality, and I noticed that "Video Device" was set to "Auto" (which I always thought meant it picked xv over all of the others), but I changed it to "xv", and now I get the same quality as mplayer without any deinterlacing.
Now, I swear a few years ago when I was fiddling with that kinda thing, I had to use deinterlacers with "xv" to get the same quality as I get now (using just xv alone).  So, does xv now use my graphics cards onboard MPEG-2 decoding, or does xv have it's own deinterlacer, or does something else happen?  I really feel like I missed something somewhere...

  • Can I make 10.10 look and feel like 10.6 ?

    Hi ... I upgraded my late iMac mini 2009 (2.53Mhz) to 10.10 .
First, contrary to some posters on these boards, I would not recommend, 10.10 runs very slow .... you are much better off in an older OS (I would love to go back to 10.6)
Some advantages of 10.10 is that your machine is up to date with the world (where 10.6 is losing support in the real world).
My biggest gripe with 10.10 : is I can't find things, can't move things ... the finder window is useless ; the machine search in the middle of screen annoys me and limits information and options.
Is there any way I can make 10.10 feel and look more like 10.6 ?
    thx

You can set  SystemPreferences->Accessability->Displays to "increase contrast": check this one and then slide the contrast slider to the left completely.
There was a little app that recersed the scroll direction in the SnowLeopard period for people who did not want the scroll direction of Lion and later: you can try it https://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/
But it will still be very different from SnowLeopard.
Otherwise you can go back to SnowLeopard if your mac was built in the (Snow)Leopard time, like Pete suggests.

  • OS X Server. Please help me. I feel like crying.

    Hello.
I am so tired of this. My Mac mini server is acting up again. There were over 80 user accounts that seemed like they should be hidden that appeared in the Server app. I deleted them. Then over 110 groups appeared in the server app appeared. I deleted three of those. Open Directory isn't working. Authentication is acting up. It won't let me connect remotely to the server from other Macs using my main user account on the server. I looked on my user accoount on the server, and whenever I try to give myself permission to administer the server, the Server App just freezes. Please help me. I am so tired of this.
ANY HELP, ANY AT ALL WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    Austin

    Hi
Without any more details regarding which accounts you deleted (I don't want to appear harsh as you are asking for help) it's possible you may have shot yourself in the foot?
There are a large number of (UNIX) accounts you should not be deleting that are essential to the proper working order, not only of the server but, more fundamentally, of the OS itself. Ordinarily you won't see these accounts although a situation may sometimes arise where you (or some other mechanism) may have inadvertently and/or unknown to you, selected an option that shows you those hidden accounts in the Server.app GUI.
Apart from the Server.app you'd normally use Terminal or Directory Editor (available in the Directory Utility app stored in /System/Library/CoreServices) to see hidden accounts. I usually use the command line utility 'dscl' to view users (hidden or visible) in OS X. Below is the output of pretty much any OS X (server or otherwise) going back to at least 10.2:

If you've deleted all of the the users and/or groups beginning with underscore then you've truly shot yourself in the foot and unless you really know what you're doing it may be quicker if you simply reinstalled the OS? Possibly even format and install? If you've deleted some of these user/groups then it's likely you will start seeing random and intractable behaviour with either the OS, Server.app or both. In either case it's not surprising you feel like crying.
There are a number of 'golden' rules you should be aware of that are crucial to the proper working order of OS X Server. In no particular order these are:
    1.  before doing anything else configure DNS services properly
    2.  try and understand the UNIX underpinnings of OS X
    3.  avoid using .local (mDNS) as the basis for your internal/private domain
    4.  unless you really know what you're doing try not to fiddle
    5.  DNS
    6.  backup as often as possible
    7.  DNS
    8.  have as many backups as you can afford
You'll notice DNS is mentioned a number of times because it really is very important. The above is not definitive in any way.

  • In desperate need of help!! I feel like i'm using ...

Hi, our broadband at home is stupidly slow.  Especially the wireless.  It feels like im running dial up from ten years ago.
The problem has been ongoing for a long time, but i've only just returned home from uni, hence why it has taken me so long to ask for help.
After reading on the forums about the shoddy service the india call centre gives, i decided it would be best to try the forums first.
The internet is consistently slow, and it also seems to reach speeds of 0 kb/s at times, sometimes disconnecting me, other times not.
These are my ADS stats, i will add my test results from the bt speed checker once it has finished.  FAST RESPONSES WOULD BE LOVED!  My net even died from trying to post this, and its the only thing im running.

Your line stats look great, your sync speed is good, and your IP profile is correct.
    Your download speed is poor.
    This could be :
    1) Hot Virtual Path at the exchange - basically your exchange has run out of bandwidth.  Do you get similar poor download speeds at all times of day and night?  If you get much faster speeds in the early morning or during the daytime, then you need the help of the forum moderators.
    2) Your WiFi connection is not working properly.  Do you get similar poor download speeds when connected to the HomeHub via an ethernet cable?  It is worth trying if you haven't done so.
    3) Are you totally sure you don't have any other devices connected to your WiFi connection dragging down your bandwidth?  Go the the "Home Network" tab in the HomeHub admin screens and see what is connected
    4) Are you signed up with BT FON?  I wonder if other people are connecting to your hub and sucking up your bandwidth? (this can cost 0.5 Mbps)  Are you living in / near a very public area?
    Hope this helps.

  • Does Apple support monitor these boards ????

Was wondering, Does Apple support monitor these boards?? If so, Do they ever offer any helpful, practical, and latest software solutions??
Seems alot of us are having wifi, bt problems; can they offer some new solutions other then those offered through support bulletins several months old that dont seem to apply to this newest upgrade?????

    Hi,
You will notice that this Article is dated 20th November 2008
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1643
Despite it pointing out Netgear Routers only, you will see from this Thread that the Issue was being discussed here much earlier than that
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1020028&#1020028 Dated 24th Aug 2005
    An Aside
I have been running my website since 2004 and iChat 2
This section originally dated 2005 as well also has the info
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page4.html#_mactodo (Item 4)
It is not so much about what Apple do right away or answer in the Discussions it is about what they do to get the info to a wide an audience as possible.
The upshot is that they do Monitor the Discussion in various forms.
Some info finds it's way in to Articles like the first link.
Other things get tested for future releases of the OS that Developers and others can try out.
The issue with that is that whoever is doing the testing concentrates on the bits they want to work and know how it works before any changes.
There are of course other examples dotted about.

  • [SOLVED] New Install of Gnome 3.2 doesn't feel like loading

    Greetings,
Before making this post, I have spent the majority of the day trying to solve this issue. I have switched from nvidia drivers to nouvela (sp?) drivers, incase that was the issue. I have scoured google, arch-wiki, and the forums until my eyes have bled. I have dug through the xsession-errors log to search out any missing components that might be causing this... but to no avail. If anything, trying to run and try Gnome 3.2 has made me feel like a complete idiot, who has obviously learnt nothing after years of using linux. So, I come here hoping that some one can point me to the solution my brain cannot itself come up with.
    Here the situation:
I have been running KDE4 for quite some time happily. I have ran Gnome 3 back in its beginning days succesfully as well, but that was an older, now dead, pc. Having seen some neat little things about the new Gnome 3.2, I got an itch to give it a try. So, I go and follow the Gnome article on the excellent arch wiki- installing both gnome and gnome extras, letting it grab everything, change from kdm to gdm, and reboot.
Well, it gives me the old gdm I remember from the early gnome 3 days (wasn't this changed) despite it showing that it is GDM 3.2 via pacman. It shows my user name, lets me put my password, and shows the stripped background. One thing to note is that the cursor remains a clock face, never changing to a pointer.
I log in, choosing GNOME, all that remains is the wallpaper, with the clockface cursor, no pointer. I go take the kids to the bus stop, come back apx. 20 min. later, no change.
Ok, bug crushing time right? So I go through the steps. I make sure that gnome shell is indeed installed. I remove any config files (there weren't any), remove gnome shell, reinstall. No go. I rinse and repeat, but removing & reinstalling different things, such as GDM, and even gnome completely. No go.
Hopping into pekwm, I search. I make copies of the xsession-errors each time, and load them in pekwm after a reboot, looking through with pacman by myside to make sure I have any possible missing files. And finally after failure after failure I give up, and come here.
So, here's my xsession-errors log. Please, if anyone can help, or even offer any kind of suggestion that might spark something in my brain to get me going in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. If this thread needs moved, merged, etc, please do so... I've searched the forums, but now my brain is numb, so yeah...

Ok, I guess all it took was for me to post this to wake up and be able to solve the issue.
It is simple really. I just needed to re-install libltdl.
So, for those searching, if you get this similar problem,
    pacman -S libltdl
is what solved it for me.

    Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:

If the entire system hangs or locks up (for example, if the system clock freezes and stops counting up), you may also be experiencing some variety of Kernel Panic. If that is the case, you may also find this article useful:

  • Is there a way to make a video call from my iPhone 4 to a non apple phone? Also is it possible to transfer pics using bluetooth from iPhone to other company mobiles? Its a great phone but sometimes I feel struck inside it.

You'd need an app like Skype to video call with other phones.
Data transfer is not supported via bluetooth and iphone to iphone is not supported at all.

  • Preview will not print 8.5" x 14", only when the computer feels like it

This problem has gone on for too long and I don't know what else to do. I have flyers that I cannot print because preview refuses to recognize the document size correctly and consistantly, and I have no other program that can print to our copier.
This happens with any PDF that is not 8.5" x 11". Both 8.5" x 14" and 11" x 17" exhibit the same problem. First I open a PDF in Preview, then I change the document size in Page Setup to "US Legal" and scale of 100% (the scale is always wrong because it is automatically resizing the document to fit on 8.5" x 11"). Then I go to print, check under Paper Handling and under Destination Paper Size is says "Use documents paper size: US Letter". This does not change no matter how many times I visit Page Setup and no matter how many times I save and re-save the file.
At random it will recognize the document size as "US Legal", but this happens only when the computer feels like it, at least that's what it seems like because there are no other settings that are different between one file and another that would cause it to print one as Letter and the next one as Legal.
Some PDFs are created in Photoshop, while other are created in Acrobat. I cannot print directly from Acrobat because of some weird problem with our copier; I cannot print from any Adobe CS3 software.
I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

com.apple.print.custompapers.plist didn't exist on my machine, but com.apple.Preview.plist did. I moved it to the desktop as you suggested, opened the files in Preview and this time it worked. Thanks so much!
I tried looking at the file, but it didn't make any sense to me. Must have been something in there that caused the problem, though.

  • Do you feel like helping those who don't help anyone?

I have a confession to make: sometimes if the person asking a question has been on SDN for years, has hundreds of posts but 0 points, I just don't feel like replying. It could be that this person actually helped a lot of other SDNers, but they were ungrateful and didn't assign any points, but I think that most likely this person only goes to SDN to ask his/her question and hasn't bothered at all to help others. So why spend any time helping this SDN "vampire"?
Am I the only one thinking like that? Is it wrong?

Yes, I normally do a bit of a background check on folks before I answer.
You don't need moderator access to do this; only to reject the post if they have still not learnt to use the search or expect others to do their work for them...
That is why Abuse Reports are great as well, and you are one of my favourite SDN'ers who's reports can always be relied upon.
In special cases we investigate further when folks are using one account to ask questions and another to answer. This is not only limited to both being within the same thread which is the obvious (and very stupid) option...
9 times out of 10 they loose everything for sufficient reasons.
    My 2 cents,
    Julius
