Great lenses for the Fs7

Hi Guys,
I have been having this dilemma bout what lenses to use with my Fs7. I like the Metabones Speedbooster but I HATE the lag on the Iris when using Canon EF L lenses. I have a full set of Canon Cine Prime lenses for when I'm shooting work that has a budget to use them but this always leaves me having to use zoom lenses with an internal Iris on other shoots.
So I have been looking around for a set of lenses that won't break the bank with an external Iris, manual zoom and manual focus. The Sony 28-135 SELPH lens is an F4 lens and on the Fs7 is more like a 42-200mm so good for some work but not for other work, certainly not for handheld shooting. But I don't like the way the zoom works in manual mode and F4 isn't that fast really.
So I found this chap based in Scotland called the Lens Doctor. His website is www.thelensdoctor.co.uk and what he does is he takes Canon FD lenses and declicks the iris and then removes the FD mount and adds an EF mount! Fantastic! so now with my Metabones Speedbooster I can have a 35-105mm F3.5 lens that has an iris of F2! Or a 70-210 F4 which has an iris of F2.8! I also have a 20-35mm F3.5 that is like an F2 and great for handheld.
Now at this point I must point out to you that these lenses are NOT cine lenses they are adapted stills lenses so they don't have 300 degree barrel turns or .8 pinch teeth but I was just at Canon UK's headquarters in Surrey and I was able to use their lens projector and the lens engineer there said that they are more than capable of resolving a 4k image and that they where very sharp across the whole frame. I really like these lenses as you can tell. They are perfect for all that corporate, news and broadcast work that just won't pay for a Canon CN7 or Arri Alura. These aren't 'vintage' lenses and the glass in them is the same glass as you'd find in Canon EF L (MK1) lenses. If you have some Canon FD glass you can even send it to him and he'll declick it add what he calls a FVA to make the Iris smooth and then fit the EF mount!
I'm just waiting on a Canon FD 28-200 from him at the moment, which could turn out to be the perfect lens!
Cheers
Mark

Sounds like an interesting possibilty this FD-EF conversion job, I may well look into it. Would definitely be keen to see some real-world footage shot with your Vivitar zoom once you get it back from Scotland. As you mentioned your annoyance with the slow rate of adjustment of an electronic iris through the speedbooster, I thought I'd share a useful configuration tweak that I discovered the other day when trying to address similar frustration. Long story short, I've customised one of the assignable handgrip buttons (I chose 6, for middle finger activation) to be "Push Auto Iris". This way, if I need to do a rapid (and therefore probably significant/large) iris shift that would take a lot of wheel-scrolling, I just briefly press the assigned button, engaging auto-iris. The iris adjusts to the 'correct' exposure, and I then release the button and fine tune a stop or so either way if needed. It's been working pretty well for me - give it a go if/when you're stuck using an electro-iris EF lens. Cheers, jason

  • Great Suggestion for the Apple Company!!

I was thinking about how the Macbook Air can use another computers hardrive, to run software, music, movies, etc. and I thought it would be great for the Apple TV to do the same thing. The Apple TV could completely erase the need for a dvd player if it could use a computers hardrive via connecting to the network, to play the dvd.

  • Great idea for the web-designers

    Hi all!
After almost two weeks of struggle trying to fix our team workflow (after the last Photosop update) I've just found out a great solution which may solve all of our problems related with total Adobe ignorance of their customers needs.
    The app is called Skitch.
Please familiarize yourself with this blog entry: https://medium.com/design-ux/25545f6cb161
The picutres are taken from the author's blog.
Please share it if you found it worhty!
Skitch vs Photoshop – List of features which Photoshop does not have (but it's supposed to or Adobe's trying to convince us it has):
    Autosave and versioning
    Vector editing and pixel perfection
    Smart Guides
    Edit elements on the fly
    Shapes connection
    Multiple blending options per layer
Round to Nearest Pixel Edge (ok, we've got it after 23 years – counting from 1990 as initial release)
    Linked Styles
Exporting Assets (assets, not sliced pixels)
    Distribute Spacing
    Grids (no plugins anymore!)
Web-optimized Text Rendering (note: ok, we've got it after 23 years – counting from 1990 as initial release but still we must use fixed-render action sets in order to get kind of approximation of proper effect )
Real CSS Styles Export (note: ok, we've got it after 23 years – counting from 1990 as initial release but it exports only simplest forms without inner shadows and borders)

Yes Photoshop is not designed to be a layout  Application, a Web design application or an illustrator or etc .   Photoshop was design for processing Photos. Over the years  Photosop has had many features added.  While you can do some layout and use some vector graphics. Photoshop is still an image processor if not the best one of the best. Photoshop can also ready files for other types of applications.   Use a proper tool for the job at hand. Would you use Skitch to process an image? Photoshop is not Adobe's only product so  I think your statement about Adobe being ignorance of the customers needs is off base.  Adobe may be obnoxioust and ignore customers need in the pursuit of money.

  • I have a great Idea for the new ios!

Instead of swipe to the left to get to the last screen of apps in the iphone or ipad, would it be nicer to have like the mac to have in each corner a screen for apps.  So an example would be upper left conner all your education apps, lower left all the business apps, upper right all the games and lower right all the media and others! Then using the home bottom to get to the main screen. Then you still have left and right with 2 screen on each side for other things. A total of 8 screen with an easy access from the home screen. Not having to swipe all the way down to 9 to try to find witch screen have the app you need.

    Thanks for the link

  • Lenses for the new EOS 70D

Good afternoon, How do I know which lenses "fit" the body of the new EOS 70D?  I also own the EOS Rebel T2i and those lenses do not fit the 70D body.  Thank you....frustrated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The 70d is a cropped sensor, so any EF or EF-S lenses will fit.  Your Rebel lenses will fit.  The only modern Canon lenses that won't fit either of those cameras are the new mirrorless lenses EF-M.

  • Great Feedback for the G5 iMac and Apple

My father recently went with a group of people to the Rotary Centennial Conference in Chicargo, and us being from New Zealand this was quite a major trip for their club. About 10 of them went and all took their own photos, but when they got back a they wanted to combine a selection of their own photos and other peoples and all talk about different aspects of the trip at a special meeting the had with all the members of the club.
You might be wondering were the iMac comes in, well the were all PC users and not very good with them anyway so my dad rang me up and asked if I could come and help them. So I thought this would be a great opportunity to show a bunch of rich people frustrated with the PC how great an Apple is. So I picked up my G5 iMac with just the mouse and keyboard and headed round there.
Well it would be an understatement to say that they were amazed with not only the computer but how easily I imported all the photos into iPhoto then gave everyone there own album so they could just drag the photos they wanted into it then order them, plus just setup a basic automator workflow which instantly put all the photos in order into a PowerPoint Presentation.
Well down Apple! I had at every amazed with your technology!

I think you'll find the new software is now
available, iFelix - The Elgato site -
    http://www.elgato.com/ - now lists EyeTV 2 as
compatible with Intel chipped Macs in the system
    requirements.
Should have said "doesn't work as it should"
Certainly the eyeTV 1.x software doesn't work and there are issues with eyeTV 2.
Though eyeTV 2's system requirements say Intel it is not a universal application and there are issues.
    http://faq.elgato.com/index.php/faq/more/342/
[EyeTV 2] When will EyeTV be updated for Intel Macs?
Ever since Apple released the Intel Mac development platform in 2005, Elgato has been porting the EyeTV software over to the new processor and system. It uses so much of the PowerPC platform to get the best performance (like AltiVec instructions), that the transition was far from trivial.
EyeTV has some issues with the Rosetta emulation environment, but will run smoothly once the entire application is a Universal Binary. We are in the final stages of this process and are working on the final tweaks so that EyeTV 2 software will be as perfect as possible for all new Intel Macs.
Thus, the free update for Intel Mac support will soon come to all current and future EyeTV 2 software users, via the normal downloadable update. No hardware update is needed, just the new EyeTV 2 software update coming soon.

  • Please bring whatsapp to apple store for free please? It should be a great innovative for the apple users..

Whatsapp is the useful messenger for all the mobile users in the recent years. So please try to put the whatsapp in your appstore as a free purchase. It would
be a great increase in your products while you put this messaging software on your ios devices and on mac app store.
    With regards,
    Me...

    1. Apple is not here. This is a user to user forum.
    2. Apple has nothing to do with Whatsapp. Its up to the developers of the Apps to set the prices. If the Developers of Whatsapp want to charge for it, then Apple cannot stop them. However Whatsapp is free: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/whatsapp-messenger/id310633997?mt=8
    3. Whatever versions of an App are available also depends on the developers. And The Whatsapp developer have only released an iPhone version. No iPad or Mac versions yet.
Perhaps you should direct this at the Developers on their support site.

  • A great idea for the Live Chat and Website!

    My idea is -
Invest some time to educate the BT.com website staff to type the correct information on the website or take a lesson on the 'BT Data Protection Policy'.
I just wasted 30 minutes of life beacuse of total **bleep** up.
    The BT website states this:
You can chat to one of our advisors who will let you know your account number online.
    At this address:  https://www.bt.com/appsyouraccount/secure/ebilling.do#
But this is the conversation you get after wasting 30 minutes of your time:
Vaseem : Hello. I'm Vaseem . Thanks for that information, I'll check it and get back to you in a moment.
     Vaseem : Hello David
     David xxxx: Hi Vaseem
Vaseem : I understand that you wish to get your BT account number is that correct?
David xxxx: yes please and clarify when my appointment is for BT broadband
Vaseem : Not to worry , I am here to help you.
     David xxxx: thx
Vaseem : Could you please confirm your address with post code and telephone number.
     David xxxx: xxxx
Vaseem : Thank you. Please give me a minute, while I check the details for you.
Vaseem : I am afraid that we are not supposed to give the BT account number over the phone/e-mail or chat due to data protection policy. However, I will arrange a copy of bill with free of charge to your billing address where you can find your account number. Is that fine for you David?
David xxxx: The BT website brought me here????? -
"Chat to an advisor: You can chat to one of our advisors who will let you know your account number online." https://www.bt.com/appsyouraccount/secure/ebilling.do#
Vaseem : I am sorry David, according to BT policy we will not be able to give the account number, if you want me to arrange a copy I will do for you David.
David xxxx: Can you please explain why the BT website says you can?
David xxxx: "You can chat to one of our advisors who will let you know your account number online."
Vaseem : I am really sorry for that David on Behalf of BT. If you want me to help with your order I will do for you.
David xxxx: Please can you answer my original question: when is my appointment to fit my broadband?
     David xxxx: ?????
Vaseem : Let me check please?
Vaseem : I have checked your order details and can confirm that engineer's visit will be on 18/11/11.
David xxxx: is there a time?
Vaseem : Yes David, it will be at 8:00AM.
David xxxx: well thanks Vaseem. You now need to go tell your manager that your website is leading people to you to get their account number which is directly contradicting your 'BT Policy'
Vaseem : I agree with you David, this is completely misleading as we on chat are strictly not authorised to provide account numbers. We are allowed to provide the account number only via a method of sending you a copy bill therefore the link guides you to us.
Vaseem : I have let my manager know about this and we will write to the bt.com team to get this fixed for you.
To top it off I cant even find where to complain by email. I have to either phone or write a letter.
THANK YOU BT - lets see how long this post stays online for - this will probably be ignored anyway.
Oh and here's a screen shot incase you NEED proof this actually happened.

  • QuickView is great - except for the "add to iPhoto" button

Is there any way to get rid of that "add to iPhoto" button in the Finder's QuickView?
We have no use for iPhoto but we keep accidentally hitting that button instead of the "Full Screen" button. Then we have to wait while iPhoto launches, then wait again while we quit it.
I thought of trashing iPhoto (after archiving it) so it doesn't launch but i'm sure some system update is going to freak out when it can't find the iPhoto bundle.

no, there is no way to do that.

no, deleting iphoto is completely safe. you don't have to have it at all.

  • Do I need lens filters for the EOS Rebel T3?

    Do I need lens filters?

I agree with all the above...
If you shoot a lot of scenics, for example, a Circular Polarizer might be a very handy filter to have. It's useful to deepen the blue of the sky and make white clouds really stand out, to reduce or control reflections off water and glass, to increase color saturation in foliage and other things outdoors on overcast days, even in some portrait situations. It's one of the most useful of all filters, and also one of the most difficult (or impossible) to replicate in post processing softwares. I would encourage a C-Pol (sometimes "CPL") as one of the first and most important filters you might want.
Neutral density filters are handy for long exposure still photographs, such as making flowing water look "creamy". Today's DSLRs just don't have a low enough ISO setting, so ND filters can help in situations where you either want a long exposure or are trying to use a large aperture in stronger light. ND filters are gray all over to reduce the light reaching the sensor, and come in a wide variety of strengths: 1 stop, 3 stop, 6 stop, 10 stop and more.
I do carry UVs to fit all my lenses (well, at least all the ones that can be fitted with a filter). But they are stored in my camera bag until actually needed for protection. I'd install one if out shooting in a sand storm, for example.
If you go looking for Circular Polarizer or any other filter, don't skimp. Get a good quality, multi-coated to make for the best image quality. B+W MRC, Pro and Kaesemann are very good. Hoya HMC, SHMC, HD and HD2 are too. Also Marumi gets high marks (I haven't used them personally). Heliopan, Singh Ray and Lee are some other well respected brands.
I would encourage you to first get the matching lens hoods for all your lenses, though. A hood is great protection for the lens alone... But when using filters, it's even more important to use a hood (to also protect the filter... both from oblique light and from physical bumps).

  • For the times that I'm here Thread

It's been quite a while since I've Iast posted something, mainly because I've been busy with all kinds of stuff. So I decided to make a thread in which I can just post all of those long stories, that I know you all love haha... Let me start with an update, on most things... Workwise:So far everything is going great, we recently offically founded our new company (the one I basically "developped") and all seems to be going according to plan. We've already got a good bond with two of our new companies, and I can truly see this becoming a succes. Seeing as I've practically raised this new company it sort of feels like my "child"   My uncle also offered me the chance to start working 5 days (instead of 4) with an increased paycheck, so that's pretty awesome as well.  Furthermore, that military selection process I've been going through for the past half year is going great as well. I actually had one of my dreams come true last wednesday, when I basically had one of my last selection tests. For this test I had to navigate and do some voice marshalling in a helicopter, we did two 40minute flights in an Alouette 3 helicopter, and it was just incredible, I had a large grin on my face throughout most of the flight The test was quite (very) tough, but it went pretty well! I did make a few mistakes, but I was able to "fix" them myself without any further trouble. Right now all I can do is wait, and see whether they'll let me pass (I'm expecting a call next week). What's really a relief for me right now, is the fact that should I not pass, at least I'll have a great alternative (unlike last year when it felt like my life depended on it)   So that's all going great, as for the rest of me right now:Like I said, I've been quite busy lately, work/ learning for that test aaaand going out (way too often).Last year I only went out every two weeks or so, or even less; over the past few weeks I've been going out 2-3 times a week A while back I decided to go out on a (girl)friend's brithday, and got home at 3:30am, even though I had to get up at 5am, and I had already gone out twice that week... but oh well, I've been having a blast which is all that matters. I'm not going out tomorrow night though... (which has "nothing" to do with the fact that I'll be going to a festival tomorrow...  ) But yeah, almost everything is going great! [edit, for meh story]How have you all been?

I had my medical and physical test today... passed it!   (long version in spoiler tag)The medical evaluation consisted of 6 parts:
    -Allergy test
They tested whether or not I was allergic to certain things (such as pollen), luckilly I wasn't.
They would put a drop of a certain substance on your skin, then ***** through the skin with a needle so that the substance could enter your body and then you'd have to wait for a reaction.
Some were talking about it being quite an annoying/ painfull test, but for some reason I didn't feel anything haha
    -Hearing test
Just a simple hearing test where you had to click a button if you heard a beep.
I was a bit afraid of this one seeing as I once had quite a painfull hearring "accident" when a music teacher forgot he had his speakers turned up all the way whilst displaying a beeping noise (ironically) caused by hearring damage to prevent us from listening to loud music...
luckilly though I scored really well on that test, about 1.5 to 2 times better than the min. requirement.
(they also tested my eardrums using airpressure)
    -Blood/ urine test
    Self explainatory, passed it.
    -Eyesight tests
Pretty much everything you can test, again, had great results.
During one of the tests (field of view) you had to focus on one little light, whilst other very small lights were projected arround it, and you were tested whether or not you could see them; out of 240 light that were shown I only made one mistake (probably just blinked hahah).
There was however one test that tested your visions field of depth, and for some reason it didn't work for me, they tested it in a different way on me after that and it turned out everything was okay (luckilly).
    -Lung test/ heart test
They tested the volume of my lungs and made a "film" of my heart, everything was great and above min. requirements
Then there was the physical part, which consisted out of three segments:
    -Bicycle test
We had to first peddle going 80 rpm for two minutes, then we had to sprint as fast as possible to 120 rpm after which you had to get back to 80, then we had to speed up to 140 and back to 100 and last but not least you had to fuly sprint (at arround 5 minutes) and keep sprinting for  30seconds.
I could've done better at this part, seeing as I couldn't keep my speed leveled whilst sprinting at the end. The thing is I mainly jog/ run, I don't really ride my bike that often... but still it wasn't that bad.
    -Strength test
We were tested on our leg strength, and the strength form our abs and back.
During the leg strength test you had to push away this plate infront of you with as much force as possible, which went really really well the second time I did it, I was way over the required strength
The abs and back part basically consisted of being squished in between to plates, and then having to push those plates away from you with as much force as possible; which went quite well as well.
And there was also a small jump test, couldn't go wrong basically.
    -Running test
We were placed on a threadmill with a mask covering our face which regulated/ held track of both the O2 input and CO2 output etc, and we had to run for as long as we could (up to a certain point).
The threadmill would increase in speed by 0.5km / hour every minute, untill it reached its max of arround 15km/ hour.
On average you had to run for about 8-12 minutes, and I ran 12,5 minutes, so I was really happy with that.
All in all a positive result for the physical part, the lesser performance on the bike test was compensated for by my results on the other tests.Right now I'll just have to wait for a little while again.I've basically passed everything and they're now gonna select the best candidates to fill up the open positions. Luckilly from what I know, there aren't that many who passed the tests, and there are actually quite a few open spots  It feels weird having started out with a group of 40 men, and now being the only one who's left (/ made it through every test). There are a few more candidates, but they came from a different group.

  • Drivers for the Apple External Modem in 10.5

Hi all! I recently upgraded my system with Leopard. All seems to be great save for the fact I can't use the external Apple USB modem attached to my Macbook Pro. While I don't fax that much I do sometimes have to use it to receive faxes and such from others. Is there a driver update for this for Leopard? Thanks to all in advance for the help!
    Lance

The drivers for the Apple USB Modem are already installed along with Leopard..... I'm not sure why its not working.
Try opening up System Preferences - Network, and see if it shows up/if its enabled.
Other than that, I don't see why you should have any problems.

  • Are there lenses for Canon Legria HF M52?

I was wondering if there are lenses portable for the Legria HF M52?
I've been searching on the web for quite a long time, but can't really find what I'm looking for.
Every website that looks like selling lenses for the HF M52 seem rather untrustful.
I'm not looking for any particular lense.
    Can somebody help me?
Btw, I'm new here. So please excuse me if this question has been asked before.

I guess those programs are intented for outgoing connections, not incoming connections?
Well, anyways, I managed to solve the problem. Just summing up in case others meet the same problem:
    - Went to Apple Store and bought/installed "OS X Server".
    - Followed the install wizard for the OS X Server.
    - Under "FTP" in OS X Server, turned "On".
    - Under sys prefs/sharing; make sure "Sharing" is activated (which already had been done in my case).
    - Add folder, e.g. "Movies", and enable "read/write" for "everybody" (already done in my case).
    - Back to the OS X Server; changed share to "Movies".
(you can change share options in OS X Server as well, the same way as under sys prefs.).
    - Now over to the Canon camcorder;
         - Use the IP address for the Mac as the FTP server. Port 21.
         - Set up username/password as for the Mac admin account (not sure if required though).
         - Target folder just set to "/" (files transferred directly to "Movies").
With this setup, both AVCHD/MP4 movies were transferred easily to my mac.
