Great News for Java Game Developers!

Finally, a complete game engine is being developed for Java! Mind2Machine is developing a genre-neutral game engine that goes way beyond a simple 3D Library.
The engine is called: OpenMind Alpha v0.7 and includes many useful game programming libraries. Say goodby to C++ and complicated engine builds/API's.
Mind2Machine is currently working on OpenMind v1.0 and they need experienced Java programmers to help develop new items. There are a lot of libraries on the drawing board, here are just a few:
-Java Physics engine
-All purposes particle system
-Collision detection
-And much more...
OpenMind is open source and is developed under the LGPL license.
I'm trying to get the word out, because I believe we could all benefit from this engine.
If you're interested in the engine and/or you would like to contribute to the development of the next version(s). Please visit their webpage:
http://www.mind2machine.com/gb/openmind/index.php
Check out their developers link, and spread the word!

I got openmind, and started to install it... and then 20 minutes later I realized I hadn't really gotten anywhere and I had to download other software just so that I could install the rest of it, and that software had its own set of bogus instructions... so I got pissed and closed it all :P

  • JDeveloper - problems with Tutorial for Java EE Developers

    Hi,
I am trying to start learning Oracle J2EE technologies, and I am using the Oracle "Tutorial for Java EE Developers (10.1.3.1.0)" listed in the Oracle Application Server 10g (10.1.3) page: http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/1013/how_to/index.html.
I am having problems in chapter 2, at the creating EJB 3.0 Persistence Entities stage, when using the Create Entities from Tables Wizard. Basically, when I select all the tables from the SRDEMO schema and attempt to create the Java classes, only the first table objects are created - ExpertiseAreas.java and ExpertiseAreasPK.java. I do not get any error messages, so I am not sure why the other table objects are not created.
If I then use the Wizard to select tables individually, the objects are created. However, they appear to be missing some details - specifically the @OneToMany annotation.
Has anyone encountered this same issue, or are there any known issues with this tutorial.
I am using version 10.1.3.4 of JDeveloper, on a 10g (10.2) XE database. I installed the version of JDeveloper without JDK included. I have a Sun Java EE 5 SDK Udate 5 (JDK 6u7) install of JDK.
    Thanks,
    Fraser

  • Looking for "Java Web Developers Toolkit"

    Hi,
Where can I find the Java classes that comprise the "Java Web Developers Toolkit"?
I'd perferr not to install a full size tool like JDevelope. I really just need the classes.

To start, ensure that you get books/tutorials which covers JSF 1.2. Some old books still covers JSF 1.1 only and the changes in 1.2 were fairly big. I can recommend the book "JSF: The Complete Reference". If I am correct, the "JSF in Action" book is only targeted on JSF 1.1 and thus fully outdated.
To learn JSF you need to learn/know/understand at least the following basic concepts:
    HTTP: [http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616.html]
    HTML: [http://www.w3schools.com/html/]
    CSS: [http://www.w3schools.com/css/]
    JS: [http://www.w3schools.com/JS/]
    HTML DOM: [http://www.w3schools.com/HTMLDOM/]
    JSP/Servlet: [http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/] (part II chapters 1-9)
Once learnt/understood the above stuff, you can continue with JSF:
JSF specification: [http://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/final/jsr252/index.html] (pick 1st download)
    JSF API document: [http://java.sun.com/javaee/javaserverfaces/1.2/docs/api/overview-summary.html]
    JSF TLD document: [http://java.sun.com/javaee/javaserverfaces/1.2_MR1/docs/tlddocs/index.html]
JSF in general: [http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/] (part II chapters 10-15)
As an alternative to JSP you can also use Facelets, which offers much more advantages above JSP, especially in terms of templating and compositions. The upcoming JSF 2.0 is going to use Facelets as the default supported view technology instead of JSP. So it is better to learn it as well: [https://facelets.dev.java.net/nonav/docs/dev/docbook.html].

  • New Website for Java Game Downloads...

    Hi There,
I hope this is the right place to post something like this, but I was on the forums back in December and needed advice on how to make executable .jar files, and now that I figured it out successfully, I wanted to share it with some fellow computer programmers in here.
I have created four games programmed in the JAVA language, and they are all based on television game shows, including SUPER PASSWORD, BLOCKBUSTERS, SCRABBLE, and LINGO.
    They can be downloaded here:
http://www.super-password.com/ctvgsd - Classic TV Game Show Downloads.
All of the games, coding, sounds, pictures, and everything else was made by yours truly. If you're interested, take a look at it for yourself and see how the games are and if you think they are good!
The website will also give you info on downloading the zip files and how to play each of the games!

  • Installed on Helios (3.6) for Java EE Developers

I was running 3.4.2 and the wizard screens would only appear when creating a new project.  I switched over to the Helios 3.6 build and there were no dependencies on the install.  Both the new project and component editor appeared correctly.
    Hope this helps,

Yes, I must admit the configuration is more complicated for 3.4.2. Great to hear you got it working on 3.6. Thanks.

  • Qosmio G10: News Flash - Great News for Capturing!!

I own a Qosmio G10. I live in Australia and purchased the notebook here. I like to keep things upto date and was scanning the Australian Toshiba website when I came across a special up-date for Qosmio owners Here's the link

  • ADOBE CS 5.5 - great news for iPhone packager

So I believe the next update for CS5 will be a big one.
The new suite, which will reportedly be marketed as "Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Digital Publishing" suite, will showcase a new version of its "Packager for iPhone" application that will include support for not only Apple's iPhone, but also the iPad and the new crop of Android tablets, incorporating popular touch gestures like "Pinch."
    Check out the sources...
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=13661
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/28/adobe_prepping_creative_suite_5_5_digital_pu blishing_for_ios_android_development.html

I was giving figures for each case. A bunch of people were able to submit apps by October 6th 2009, admittedly with an alpha of the packager. Then many more submitted apps with a beta of the packager, right up to when Steve stepped in. The rest of the world could make apps for internal and personal use (on up to 100 devices) until September 9th, when Steve changed his mind. Politics aside, Flash could make iPhone apps throughout that whole time.
I realize that many people would think that it is implied in the marketing that Flash should be able to make iPhone apps that could be uploaded to the App Store, but Steve stopped everything (other tools too, not just Flash) on the same weekend as Adobe launched CS5. It was a very difficult situation for Adobe, and all they could do was let the feature remain in the product. A lot of us would have been unhappy if it was taken out, just as a childish reaction to what Steve had done. It did cause them to change their development direction, and put iPhone on hold, and go full strength on Android development. So, Steve's action was a huge boost for Android development.
About the "Flash would not keep up" part, it's very easy for Steve to have been an oracle about that, after all, he was about to ban Flash.
And with Retina display, it is very common for software to be released to support current hardware, and not so much future hardware. With the last packager development being about two months before the iPhone 4 came out, and with the amount of secrecy Apple have, it would have been hard for Adobe to be supporting the Retina display.
None of which means that you don't have a valid argument, and I would be very happy if the next round of packager updates was free to all CS5 owners, and that the feature set catches and overtakes what AIR apps on Android can do. But that's different than expecting to get a free update of the entire suite that you bought.

  • Jj2sdk1.5 what's new for we game programmers?

Basically, what the subject says. Is there anything that'll make me jog around the block naked with "Java Rules!" painted across my chest and back? (less exciting advancements are ok too. :+ )

..I think you mean "us" game programmers. I heard there was opengl support, that'd be something to jog about.. but maybe I heard wrong.

  • Great News for BT Car Kits for N85 users

The new N85 (us version anyway) has
    Bluetooth profiles including:
    Phone Book Access Profile (Server)
This should enable the phone to automatically sync contacts with most car kits. I have a US model 2007 Mercedes and this should enabke it to work probably.
I preordered the phone and expect delivery within 2 weeks. I hope it works.
    http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/phonecompare/n85/n85_tech_specs

Unfotumatelty - the additional BT profile did not help transfer the contacts to my Mercedes BT unit. I guess the "server" part of the profile waS OF NO HELP.
I ended up buying a Viseeo0 MBU2000 unit to replace my mercedes puck in the armrest compartment.
It also did not transfer phonebook automatically but it does allow me to transfer the contacts via OPP and it also allows me to use voice dialing through the mercedes system.
Not as automatic as I was hoping for but much better than it was.
All in all, the Viseeo0 is a pretty good alternative for people with Mercedes and the newer Nokia phone models.
I believe that some of the E series work a little better with some BT units.
2006+ Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Infiniti's seem to have a tough time with the Nokia N series.

  • Great news for Novation Remote SL / Automap iPhone users

At last..! I've checked it out, and it's all there. Now you can access all parameters and plugins.
    Cheers.
    Bryan

Does it work with your Mk I or Mk II? I find with my Mk I SL 37 that it does work with all the Logic plugins but the workflow is still kind of quirky. I still need to change templates from 38(Instruments) to 39(Mixer/Transport) to use the unit. It's not bad, just quirky. I'm wondering if it works better with the MK II. Anyone know? Do you still need to switch templates or can everything be done from the MKII control panel...ie. using the Transport and Mixer buttons on the unit to get direct control of those functions?

  • I'm new to Java. Whats the easiest program to make games?

I'm a moderately experience flash actionscript 3 developer, so i know how to program.
I just want to know a developers kit that is good for making simple 2d games. Are there kits, that help you with the graphics stuff, like flash does? Because i suppose in Java you have to load all the sprites etc mannually?
So i'm looking for an easy developer's kit for Java games.

    omniscient wrote:
game maker is very limited. I want to use the java language.Okay but why do you want to use java? What do you think it offers you over something like GameMaker (especially if you're relying on prebuilt libraries)? If we know your actual goals (what kind of game do you want to make? How do you plan to get started? How much programming do you already know?), we can better help you.
I'll check the tutorial.Always a good start. If you're unfamiliar with java in general, I wouldn't touch anything GUI-related until you master the [basic tutorials|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/index.html] first.
But I don't understand why you're so negative. What's wrong with wanting to use a kit thats easy- to use, and has all the basic stuff ready for you?I didn't mean to come off as negative. The problem with using a "kit" is that it gets in the way of actually learning how to program. I'd recommend getting a really basic game going on your own (think pong), and then worry about adding on to it using third party libraries. Learning how to do the basics (which really aren't that hard to start) will give you a better idea of what you need: physics engine? More accurate collision detection? Special effects? Smoother animation? Artificial intelligence? The list is endless, and I doubt you'll find all of it in one prebuilt kit. What fun would that be anyway!
Ofcourse i know i dont ahve to draw pixel per pixel, i was exaggerating.Ok phew, you had me worried for a second.
All this being said, I love seeing what other people come up with. Keep us posted on your progress, and feel free to ask questions as you go along.
