Great repair expierence

I am a non paid, non HP Employee, this is my story and experience.
Hey all you HP Pavilion owners. Have it fixed and resuscitated by the manufacturer. BEST AND SMART CHOICE.
Back in 2008 I purchased a high end DV68765 SE Entertainment Laptop, I purchased it from Bestbuy with a Blacktie protection program, over the 3 years, I had two power supplies replaced and a battery replaced, this was the only problem. It was an incredible machine. Everything worked great, I use it pretty much 24/7. I actually wore out the touch pad so I ordered a new keyboard and touchpad from HP Parts. Having a bit of computer building and repair in my history, I elected to perform the install of the new parts. Well, that all went wrong as due to the small little ribbon connectors on the motherboard, well it broke and once that happens, you are committed to throwing away the laptop or replacing it. At least that's what I thought. I contacted HP Support and explained that I had damaged the motherboard connector. The informed me for a one time cost of 350.00 they would pay the overnight shipping, Fedex, repair my laptop for whatever was wrong with it and return it also paying for overnight Fedex service.
Since I just had spent 150.00 dollars on a new keyboard and touchpad bezel....I needed to continue with the repair. So I opted to pay the350.00. Now keep in mind it was my destruction of the connector, to replace a motherboard was 350 dollars alone from the HP Site. I paid the process fee of 350.00 to the service center call taker, very knowledgeable and courteous, the next day I received a Fedex box for my laptop, sent it off Monday and to my amazement on the following friday, I received my laptop back in like new condition. 4 days total. Unbelievable service and support. In hind sight, I should have done that in the beginning. The even replaced the display lamp which was working perfectly.
I cant praise the service center staff for there professional help enough.....There is only one thing I did and it's not a bad thing....I had written my laptop off for just another Junker. I went out and purchased a brand new DV7 Laptop. So, now I have two really great machines. You know....Service after the sale these days is hard to find at any company as budgets get tight, I WISH TO SAY THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE AT HP SUPPORT FOR A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
Jim

No, thank you Jim86001
As an HP employee working in customer service, I was taught from day one that this company would be NOWHERE without it's customer's.  You are the reason we have been in business all these years and will continue to do so.  So thank you, and everyone else who purchases our products and uses our services

  • Repair disk greyed out?

this may be a no-brainer, but i'm stumped. i recently installed Tiger onto one of my disk partitions (i'll refer to the partition as 'B") so that i could use DiskWarrior to repair the startup disk ("A").
Prior to this, when I was running DW off the CD it was taking very long, appeared to hang on step 6 for 24 hours.
the workaround worked great, repaired the disk in a matter of minutes.
now however, i'm not sure if i've altered my system configuration.
i was a bit freaked when after installing Tiger on the partition it restarted with the partition "B" as the startup. i changed the startup back to the original "A" and thought all was well.
now however, i think i've noticed another change.
in disk utility, the "repair disk" button is greyed out for "A"
"A" shows Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk as options but NOT Repair Disk
"B" however allows for all the options
(Side note, I have 2 other partitions as well, now they only offer "Verify" and "Repair Disk", whereas I'm certain they used to allow for all options previously. Also, I've added an external HD during these changes. Maybe that's a factor?)
Many thanks if anyone has any thoughts. This resource is truly indispensible!
Dual 1.25 GHz Power PC G4, 2MB L3 Cache per processor, 1GB DDR SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   also Rev B G3 iMac collecting dust

I know DW takes a looooooong time to run. I've never seen it take 24hrs.
DiskWarrior has an update for Tiger, You might check to see if you are using the newest version for DW.
sometimes the computer sees whatever version your Mac has on its various drives and chooses the newest version to startup.
I have 3 HD's an ext 40GB, a 120GB, and the original 80GB drive the Mac came with. OS9.2.2 on the 120GB, OSX 10.2.7 on the 40GB. and the main drive has OSX 10.3.9. I am sure Tiger works similar, the computer will make a choice to boot up with the newest OS, unless you tell it which OS to boot with. I may very well be wrong... just my observation from trial and error.
I aim to remove my 10.2.7 when I get Tiger in next few months. consolidate my 9.2.2 & 10.3.9 on the 120GB and put Tiger brand new on the 80GB.
So if things never work right, I can always reboot onto the old Panther.
Of course when moving OSX system, always use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, unless you like installing the OSX brand new everytime. OS9 is not as anal retentive.
Verify/Repair Permissions is Very different from Verify/Repair Disk.
your Disk Repair thing will never repair the startup/boot disk. If you are want here is good way to go...
Boot off your OSX install discs. When it gets to the Install screen it asks what langauage you wish to install. Goto the File Menu and choose to Quit the installer. normally is an Option to use the Disk Utility. Then You should be able to Verify and Repair disk all you want on both Partitions without issue.
Non-OSX disks will not allow Verify/Repair Permissions, but you can Verify/Repair Disk to hearts content on them.

  • Cannot repair permissions on new MBP

I migrated from my older MBP to the new 15 inch 2.93 and I just can't seem to repair these permission issues. Not sure if I am taking a performance hit or not but it is bugging me and can't figure a way to repair them short of a complete reload. It seems most of the issues are from I life 08 to the new I life 09. Any advice here would be great

I'm still not happy with it. I just sold my MacPro and old 2.4 2006 version to go laptop only and i put a lot of money in this box with 2 SSD drives and 8gbs of ram tomorrow so this still bugs me to no end. I just may reload everything from scratch and migrate from a backup in manual mode. Most of the issues it seem are I life no less. The issue comes down to migrating and I tried with CCC but I copied my preferences and that may have been the issue. I eliminated all Ilife stuff but still got there permission issues and loading the Ilife after the fact did NOT clean it up. I can't find a program to change or delete this stuff either. Here I just did it again and after loading Itunes update today still no help in getting rid of there permissions problems. Not sure .7 update will do anything

  • Generic Icons in Tiger

My Photoshop and Image Ready have disappeared into Generic Land. How to get them back and what is wrong with my computer???

That is weird, I'm afraid it does sound like something more serious is wrong.
When you deleted the old Photoshop did you also delete all the system files that go with it? Preferences, caches, Application Support, etc?
The most obvious explanation is that some file in the system is corrupted and you didn't remove it and the reinstall didn't replace it. Still worse, it might not even be an Adobe file but a Mac system file.
First, remove Photoshop again. This time get EasyFind, it's free:
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
You want this in order to do a search for everything on your hard drive named Photoshop or Adobe and Spotlight does not search in all system folders, but EasyFind will. The problem here is that some Adobe products share some system files, so if you remove too much you might have to reinstall those as well, if you don't delete anything you suspect works with other Adobe app you risk not getting rid of the corrupted file.
Personally, I'd remove everything Adobe then reinstall any other apps later as needed.
After you delete all Photoshop (or Adobe) files, then go back and redo all you did before, but this time delete the Launch Services files first, then run repairs from the DVD then repair permission from the hard drive.
THEN reinstall Photoshop. If that doesn't work you will probably need an Archive and Install of the system. In fact, if you want to be sure of nuking the problem you can do an A & I after removing Photoshop and all it's files and skip all the rest of it.
As far as Apple Care I think they will say contact Adobe and Adobe will say contact Apple. You could try posting this on the Adobe forums and see if you get any better solutions.
Another thing to do is get Disk Warrior. This might be a directory corruption that Disk Utility can't even see let alone fix. It's not a great repair program, but Disk Warrior is the best for directory repair.

I tried to uninstall version 8.1.2, and I get an error message to verify that the specified transform paths are valid. Some body please help. I could use the 90mb of space it's taking up.
My system is a laptop, vista 32 bit. No security update issues are involved. I am running version 10, and simply want some memory back.

Claudia, thanks for the link. It removed the old version in about 30 seconds Microsoft Fixit looks like a great repair tool. Thanx for the hook-up. Redbaron8.

If you feel you need erasing 90 MB. I would suggest getting some additional storage medium (external HD, ...). In any case, you may want to try the following: Run this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall Uninstall Reader using Add/Remove Programs

  • What Should Be The "Life" Of A First Generation G5?

Firstly, I became a rabid Mac user about 3 years ago. I love them. My G5 (first generation) is nearly 3 years old. I have 50 days left on Apple Care (thankfully) and have made an appointment to take it in tomorrow.
I am having problems addressed on other threads, i.e. as of this morning, when I power up, I get the grey screen, loud fan, etc. and that's it. Also, the past couple weeks the computer shuts down, randomly and on it's own. I phoned Apple Care and they had me reset the SMU and the PRAM. It didn't do any good.
About a year ago, I couldn't even boot up my Mac. Took it in to the dealer and they replaced the power supply, etc. Worked fine. Then about 3 weeks ago these current problems started. Hopefully they will be able to repair it. The question is, should the repairs take care of the problems and for how long? (I realize each machine is different, depending on the user, etc.) Also, when I spoke to the gal at Apple, she said the internal hard drives only live to a certain age. How long should they last?
I just want to make sure that I am getting all of the necessary repairs (covered under warranty) to ensure several more months or hopefully, years of enjoyment with this G5. So the question, how long before one gives up on a machine and moves to a new one? I'm a student and don't have the resources to buy the latest model.
Appreciate these discussion boards and your feed back. Also, would appreciate any suggestions on what I should "demand" that they do under the terms of my warranty? Thanks!

Just thought I would pass something on regarding my Mac and my experience at the Genius Bar. As I said, yesterday when powering up I couldn't get past the gray screen it it's hanging in the open firmware. This morning, when I took it in to the Apple store, the young and very pleasant gal couldn't even get it to boot up. Finally she was able to boot it up with their external HD. She ran disk utility and there was a bunch of corrupted stuff. I'm no techie, but I saw a lot of read lines indicating problems. She seemed to think the continual, intermittent and random shutdown of the computer (on it's own) wreaked havoc on the HD. Evidently she was able to repair this on site.
I was impressed with this conscientious gal, because she picked up things that I didn't even notice. She detected a high pitch emitting from the power supply. I couldn't hear it, but she and her colleague could. That's good enough for me! Also she noticed a slight almost imperceptible flickering of the screen. Great, repair it!
The bottom line, to get the ball rolling, she ordered a new power supply as well as a new LCD display. Also she took note that I had the power supply replaced a year ago. On the repair ticket, she wrote up the following:
*Proposed Resolution: Replace power supply but really make sure that fixes the issue. Customer has had power supply replaced before and the issue is back again. Customer's warranty expires soon and he wants to make sure it's fixed before his coverage expires. Also noticed flickering screen while computer was starting up. Possible LCD replacement.*
Just thought I would pass this on, because others have had similar problems. But the real moral to the story as I see it is this: +If you have bought a new Mac and it is still under warranty or if you have AC protection, and the computer isn't performing the way you think it should, take it back to the dealer and have it checked out.+ This is what I should have done a couple months ago when it was in the nascent stages of acting up.
    We shall see what happens!

To increase your phone's battery life:
Turn on Battery Saver. Select Settings > battery saver. Note when Battery Saver is on, your phone will no longer: automatically receive email and calendar updates, update some Live Tiles and allow apps to run in the background.
Stop your phone scanning for available Wi-Fi networks if those are not available. Select Settings > WiFi > Off.
Switch Bluetooth on only when you need it. Select Settings > Bluetooth.
Use network connections selectively. For example, if the signal strength of the mobile network varies much in your area, your phone must scan for the available network repeatedly. This increases the demand on battery power. If the 3G connection is on in the mobile network settings, your phone searches for the 3G network. To switch off the 3G connection, select Settings > mobile network, and deactivate the 3G connection.
Reduce the frequency of email synchronization. Select Settings > email+accounts > YourEmail > Download new content.
Use a dark theme. Select Settings > theme > Background > dark. Select also dark theme in applications that offer an option.
Reduce the screen brightness. Select Settings > brightness > Level. Disable the automatic feature first. The brightness level also affects the Automatically adjust functionality.
Use a Wi-Fi connection to connect to the internet, rather than a mobile data (GPRS or 3G) connection.
Switch off location services if not needed – so the phone will not look up your location frequently in the background. SelectSettings > location > Off.
Disable unneeded background applications. Select Settings (swipe left to applications tab) > background tasks
Use wired headphones, rather than the loudspeaker.
Switch off unwanted sounds and functions, for example Vibrate. Select Settings > ringtones+sounds.
Switch off “connect with Xbox LIVE” when not needed. Select Xbox LIVE > Settings > Connect with Xbox LIVE.
Switch off your phone or switch flight mode on whenever phone is not needed, for example, while you are sleeping. Note that the alarm clock is not active if the phone is off!
Ensure your phone's battery is fully charged. Check Settings > battery saver > battery information. Note that older chargers may not fully charge the battery.
Note: it is recommended to use the original charger found in the sales package to charge the battery of your phone.
Note: make sure that your phone is running the latest software to get battery related improvements.
If the battery loses the power fast even though there are no features consuming the power, switch phone off and back on. The battery may be also wearing out and needs to be replaced with a new one.

  • Buying a second hand 5D Mark III

Hi all, I'm considering to buy a second hand 5D Mark III camera. Do you have some suggestions on what I should pay attention to ?
    thanks

    1) shutter count
    2) age
    3) repair histroy
    4) physical presentation and functionality.
if you're purchasing it from a third party, things to consider:
is it coming out of a cardboard box lying next to some jumper cables and a piece of an engine block next to a gas can being delivered in the bed of a pickup that's more rust than metal?
consider your source for the item.  are they an established photographer? why are they selling it?
is the price much lower than the cost of a new one?  usually with a camera like the 5d3 even a slightly older one but one that has been loved dearly, will sell for nearing on the original mrsp.
ask if you can take both a cf and an sd card to mee the person and take a few photos in various lighting situations, and see if you notice any crazy abberations in your photography before purchse.
these are all things i'd keep in the back of my mind if i were pressed to buy another 5d3 and from a second hand source.
not too many people just JUMP into the purchase of a 5d3 so they most likely will take good care of it, but you can never tell if it was the one that fell off the dock while crabbing and had to be neetted up...  on the good side, eventhough you 'd end up paying a bit, Canon does have a great repair service.  So, if you do get offered one rather cheap with a few dings and scratches, a high shutter count, and that little rattle that doenst seem to come from anywhere in particular but you always seem to hear it... if it's not still warranteed, then just ship it off pay some money, and get one back that's probably as good as paying for one outright at your local dealer.
i hope these ramblings serve to help.

  • Hard Drive Replacement for MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009)

Recntly, my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009) stopped working.  It would not even boot up.  I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store where they ran some diagnostics and told me that my hard drive had failed.   They said they could replace it for around $160 (labor and parts) or I could replace the drive myself and then have them install the operating system for free.  This sounds like a much cheaper option.
What I am wondering is can I buy any hard drive, or does it have to be apple specific in some way?  Does anyone have any recommendations on which hard drive to buy?  Will I need any other special tools to do this?
    Thanks.

Here's some great repair instructions for you: https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_15%22_Unibody_2.53_GHz_Mid_2009
There's no such thing as an Apple specific hard drive. Just be sure that it has the same connector as the one you're replacing.

  • How do I execute a Drag-and-Drop restore onto a new HD

    Ok, so...
While I was backing up my HD with Time Capsule the other day, it started to fail (yes, irony abounds).
So, I have a great repair shop trying to recover my data and I did get a new HD and clean install of Lion (what I was using before the failure), but I don't have a complete Time Capsule backup.
What I do have is an older drag-and-drop copy of my User folder and almost all of my apps, but I am not sure in what order to do the following and if I am missing any steps:
    1. Run Software Update
    2. Drag my old User Folder over (and if I should so this as one big drop or piece by piece).
    3. Update Apps
Is there something I am missing?
    Thanks!

  • Ipod mini replacement batteries

Has anyone actually bought a replacement battery online and replaced it themselves? Was it pretty easy to do? I know my battery is shot, I haven't been able to use my ipod for a while now and am hoping that buying a replacement battery will be my ipod back up and running. Just wanted to hear from anyone who's done this.

This web site has a lot of great repair guides, including for the iPod mini
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Mini
Also, if you search on YouTube, there seem to be videos of the procedure.
(On a side note, if the tiny hard drive in your iPod mini ever goes bad, you can supposedly replace it with a standard compact flash card.)

  • HT5815 The update completely screwed up my computer! Now it won't start-up - it only goes into Terminal then shuts down. After three tries Techtool Pro opens in e-disk mode to repair the problem (which it can't find a solution). Great Apple - thanks !

Has this affected anyone else ?

    Lesultan wrote:
Now is there a chance you could find another moment to explain WHY TTP is such a problem ?  I've used it for more than 10 years and it's only been an asset.
I realize you considered my response unhelpful, but my answer remains unchanged: uninstall it.
You explained that your Mac was unable to start. In that case the Apple Support article is the appropriate place to begin troubleshooting.
You also asked if anyone else had been similarly affected. Lacking an overwhelming response from a representative sample of millions of Mac users running the latest OS X release, any premise that the update caused this problem must be logically flawed. On the other hand OS X updates will very frequently reveal incompatibilities with third party software, especially those that modify the Mac's operating system. Techtool Pro is one of many that do.
TTP is also unnecessary in that it conveys no benefit. An example is the following: http://www.micromat.com/support-45/knowledgebase/ttp7kb/techtool-pro-has-found-b ad-blocks-what-do-i-do7
Solution: erase the volume, if it happens again replace the drive. Really?
TTP and similar utilities may be used to "repair" a damaged HD for the purposes of extracting whatever data remains intact, after an irretrievable data loss event has already occurred. Your very complaint illustrated that it was unable to do that. Conclusion: it's worthless.
... I decided to run the Mac Pro in Target Disk mode and run Disk Utility from my laptop on the suspect disk - it repaired (or so it says) the disk and now I'm copying ("restoring") all contents onto another disk that I can run further tests on later.
To be clear, Apple's Disk Utility accomplished what TTP could not.
Most likely, your HD is already in a failed state, so I don't recommend relying upon it. I do recommend that you extract its data, then replace the drive.
A failed HD will fail again, every time. Hard disks are cheap, and backups are essential. Having a reliable backup strategy makes events like this a non-event. If you want to keep the HD in service despite these cautions, I recommend you erase it as recommended by Micromat, do not reinstall TTP, and if it fails again replace it - also as recommended by Micromat.
I maintain many Macs for many people and have done so for many years. None of them have TTP or any similarly clever utilities installed. It's your Mac, do with it what you will, but if you choose to install such junk you own the consequences, which may be that it trashes your Mac.

  • Post RSD Repair!-Running Great!!!

So I was having the random shutdown thing, and I took it to the Apple store and they sent it out on Monday September 11th. It got to the Repair Depot the next day and waited there until September 19th for the parts. It got repaired on the 20th and I got it back on the 21st. I got lucky I guess because I didn't have to wait very long at all. After I got it back I turned it on and to my suprise, they didn't wipe my harddrive. Later on in the afternoon after doing some software updates to it, OSX asked me to restart and I did, but when it started up again, it had a bunch of colored lines on it. I called the Apple store in Austin and they told me to reset the PRAM (whatever that is) and it worked. I'm happy to have my computer back since I really needed it to do my schoolwork, but you would think that they would have fixed everything. I think they replaced the Logic Board, Heatsink, Top Case, and Bezel. The top case feels alot nicer and I am now longer afraid to rest my palms on it. The ONLY problem that I have is that the bezel is unattached at one spot and it is kind of annoying. Like, it looks normal, but if i put my nail underneath the tiny gap, I can pull it out at least a couple of centimeters. There is probably a really quick fix to this and I'll just take it to the apple store some time. To everybody still waiting for their computer, just hang in there because the machine runs so much better afterward!

    yay!
