Greatest discovery of the century?

Yep, it’s another science post. Apologies in advance but I have to share this!
Hopefully everyone’s heard about this, but CERN announced on Wednesday that they have found a Higgs Boson!
Wednesday was my day off so at around mid-morning I opened up Twitter and pretty much every single tweet in my timeline was about this. I had to read a couple of articles (and made a point of checking out CERN’s own Twitter page) before I could set aside my disbelief.
Queue excited text to three equally geeky friends of mine to let them know of this (including our very own DavidM). The rest of my morning was spent reading up about it.
Up until Wednesday, I had a vague understanding of why finding a Higgs Boson was so important, so since the announcement I’ve been trying to read up more about it. Unfortunately, articles about it seem to have either overly simplistic or overly complicated explanations about it, so whilst I understand that this particle is essentially responsible for creating mass and I understand some the finer details in my head, I still couldn’t sit down and explain it to someone.
Arguably, this is the greatest discovery of the century and I am very pleased it happened during my lifetime.
Was anyone else equally excited about this or was it just me?

What happens if you buy a season pass for eight tv show episodes but Discovery cancels the show after four episodes?

Hi,
I bought a season pass for eight episodes of the tv show World's Toughest Trucker. Discovery cancelled the show after four episodes. My purchase was made after the show had been cancelled but I didn't know that at the time. The missing four episodes do exist, as the show was produced and shown in the UK. Help.

Considering the hundreds of people that use this forum and likely bought a season today alone it really isn't an unanswerable question. However I'll take the lack of an answer as ineptitude rather than ignorance.

DATE probs with turn-of-the-century

Any suggestions are appreciated. This is probably something hundreds of you have run across, but I am experiencing it now, for the first time, with two separate WinNT4 installs.

In preparation for the SQL/PLSQL 8.0 exam, I am running into a DATE problem, which the RR vs YY formats in SQL8 text do not address. On two separate PCs both running WinNT4.0, the following different results are obtained.
Using the following Select statement with the Oracle free sample database:
SELECT TO_CHAR(ADD_MONTHS(HIREDATE,1),DD-MON-YYYY) NEXT MONTH

My issue is that all aritmetic calcs involving the DATE functions are coming up with errors by one PC looking at the 21st century vs both centuries. Any advice?

Tks Evelyn. Yes you were right. The source of the prob the Oracle sample DB. The BuildSportsDB.sql script uses all table inserts in mask format DD-MON-YY. The revised Oracle sample DB script, entitled BuildSportsObjs.sql uses an input format for all dates DD-MON-YYYY. Each Hiredate had handles like 21-Jan-1981 in the corrected script.
Seems (however) that the server shuld have been able to handle the DD-Mon-YY . Thanks again for your response. ...W

Do you have to Discovery ALL the Properties defined on a Class before an instance of said class will be created

I am learning how to create management packs with VSAE and have a question please.
When defining a Class based on LocalApplication (which I believe already has a hosting relationship with Windows Computer and therefore no need to create a hosting relationship?)
let say I define two properties one called Version and the other Vendor both based on registry values, so I include the discovery of these regsitry values in my discovery (along with the regsitry key exists to check the actual app is installed).
Now if I have a Server with only two of the above three registry items created e.g. the actual Key and Version string value but not vendor string value. Will an instance of the Class be discovered and thereby viewable in the 'discovered inventory' view?
Or do ALL properties have to be present (as defined on the class definition) for an instance of said class to be created?

So if I have three properties definded on my custom class, none of which are key properties and I only discover two of them (as the registry key or what ever is missing for the last property) the class should still be discovered as there are no key properties
for the custom class and therefore no key properties missing from the discovery, is that correct please?
Also I understand I have to Discover any key properties of the classes parent/s

Therefore perhaps I need to add this as a property as well as an InstanceSetting?
I am using SCOM 2007 R2 at the moment

Array - return greatest value in the array

I am trying to write a program that for the method 'greatest' it will return the greates value in the array between the elements beginning and end.
Below is my code. No errors but I am not getting the desired results.

So I went to the paper and thought about the logic and rewrote what I had in the method greatest.
* I am passing to the method, successfully calculating the greatest value, but not returning a varialble so the variable val is still not used. Or if I am returning a value I dont see it. *
So, I need to return the value and then call the printArray method to print the outcome.
What line needs to be addressed - remember anyone else reading this, please do not write it for me :-)

Greatest to return the dt but I also want to return corresponding field

I am using the following statement to return the the most current date.
How do I use this to tell me if date_one date is return then I want the field this_one also.
Or if date_two date is return then I want the field this_two return also

Manually triggering a Discovery via the SCOM Console Task

Please let me guide to create a SCOM Console task to trigger Discovery. So when I click this SCOM Console task, I could be able to get the latest data and view in the SCOM Console.

There are different types of discoveries, and some are nested, or staggered. One easy way to ensure discoveries have recently run on a box, would be to simply cycle the Health Service on the box. So you could just create a task that bounces
the health service, this task already exists should you be scoped to a view with agents.

Challenge of the Century

Ok, I'm going to give a blow by blow of my ipod touch problem, let's see who has the know how to help me out!
Two days ago, I plugged my first gen ipod touch into my computer (Vista) and opened itunes. I was told that there is an update available for the touch. I download and install. The only problem is the update would not install, and sent my ipod touch into a lockdown recovery mode. All that appears is the screen indicating that I should connect my ipod to itunes. I restarted the computer, plugged my ipod back in and not only is it not recognized by itunes, I get a prompt that drivers could not be found (something to the effect of computer could not find apple mobile device drivers (recovery mode), would you liek t try to find them?).
I have done a search on the net and found this problem to be common. I followed the common solution found online: try to reset ipod (nothing), reinstall all apple software (nothing), hold down home key while plugging in (nothing), try to reset ipod by holding power & home keys (nothing).
I also attempted the common problem fixer concerning drivers: open device manager, right click "apple mobile device" (complete with yellow triangled exclamation point), choose to reinstall or update driver, and browse to the apple program file directory containing drivers. The result: the drivers still "Cannot be found" despite the fact that they are right there in the folder (at this point most people with this problem have their solution).
So, my situation is: I have a completely bricked ipod touch that can't be shut off (no red slider after holding down power), that can't connect to itunes, and cannot be fixed via the common solution to problems similar to my own.
Any ideas?

Hmmmm. A few times I've seen that sort of thing happen if there was a bit of disk damage near the drivers.
So it might be worth running a disk check over the drive on which you've got those program files installed. Here's Vista instructions for that:

Does the disk check (or checks) find any errors? If so, can Windows find your drivers again?

Hp laserjet 4m printer, the greatest printer in the world vs 10.5

I have an old HP laserjet 4m printer. This is the best investment I ever made for my business. It has been a great workhorse, always reliable. Now with Leopard it does not work. The print driver sees the printer and allows about 2 seconds of connectivity, then it dis-engages and flushes the print job. Anyone find a work around for this? Every app does the same thing. I am using the LaserJet 4M printer driver supplied by apple.
Also is anyone else haveing trouble saving files to an external hard drive from Adobe products running Leopard?

If you're using the BlackBerry browser, you can't configure anything to bypass the RIM servers. I believe you may do so by using the Opera browser, but I haven't tried it myself so cannot comment with authority.

If you must have the iPhone in the USA, your choices are AT&T or Verizon. T-Mobile has a great selection of phones, but not the iPhone.

You probably got a redemption code rather than a serial number. Also check your receipt. You use the code to get a serial number.

The OS is so great that I want to gift a copy to my friend. Why does the AppStore not allow me to do so?????

My advice, just DON'T do what apledude suggested. Just don't.
I would say, go out to the store and buy an iTunes giftcard for your friend, and just tell them it's for Lion.

I am using root.
Error:
WinRM cannot complete the operation. Verify that the specified computer name is valid, that the computer is accessible over the network, and that a firewall exception for the WinRM service is enabled and allows access from this computer. By default, the WinRM
firewall exception for public profiles limits access to remote computers within the same local subnet.
It is possible that:
1. The destination computer is unreachable (because it is down, or due to a firewall issue).
2. The destination certificate is signed by another certificate authority not trusted by the management server.
3. The destination has an invalid certificate, e.g., its common name (CN) does not match the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) used for the connection.
4. The servers in the resource pool have not been configured to trust certificates signed by other servers in the pool.
DNS is correct, port 22 opened, ping is OK, telnet server 22 is OK.
I was using manuals and nothing.
What should I do?

To resolve this issue
Verify that Management Server can ping the agent host by Fully-Qualified Domain Name
Verify that no network firewalls or host firewall is blocking TCP port 1270

but most of the (dare i say) indian heavy threads look exactly like that.I'ts worse in the mobility forums. There's another thread from (I think) 2003 about using a mobile phone as a IR remote for TV ... starts out sane and deenerates around #8 - #10... I think I saw 293 posts at last resurrection. (edit: no, there are "only" 70. And it's from 2005. Or maybe there's another one like that somewhere.)
But I'll say this: around half of the members offering help in CLDC and MIDP / WTK forums have Indian-like nics, and a few of them I know to be Indian (inasmuch as one can "know" about an internet nic)... one Frenchman (no offence to anyone from France) who BSed more than he ever helped, and seemed to take great pleasure in abusing newbies... till the day I gave him enough rope to hang himself, after which his forum activities seemed to taper off (OK maybe it was a coincidence) plus one from Chicago who's probably the most knowledgeable.
The craziest part is that there are tons of sample codes available for j2me -- even more than there are for j2se, I think. Till today there hasn't been anything I wanted to try for that I couldn't patch together someone else's codes, maybe from 3 different sites, and compile/debug/run it.
check out the media sections theyre full of threads full of pages full of "snd codz plz 2 vijay@..."Anything entertaining there? I've never visited those forums ever. maybe I should take a looksee.
