Greek, macrons, and other special glyphs? Recommended substitutions?

I had been under the impression that most modern Adobe OpenType fonts had support for glyphs like α (U+03B1, GREEK SMALL LETTER ALPHA)  and ā (U+0101, LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH MACRON), and that the few cases I had found were mostly outliers. Today I became aware that I was mostly wrong, and would appreciate it if someone could explain what the situation really is; I was surprised to learn how wrong I was.
Most of my thinking is in the context of machines running Mac OS X with Font Folio 11 installed/available, if that's pertinent.
Miguel clarified a while ago that the macron characters were "only supported in font families with the suffix Pro, such as Minion Pro." I had missed it when he said it, or I guess internalized it wrongly. So I guess that means the macron characters are mostly available in the 24 Pro faces: Adobe Caslon Pro, Adobe Garamond Pro, Adobe Jenson Pro, Arno Pro, Bickham Script Pro, Brioso Pro, Caflisch Script Pro, Calcite Pro, Chaparral Pro, Cronos Pro, Ex Ponto Pro, Garamond Premier Pro, Lithos Pro, Minion Pro, Myriad Pro, Sanvito Pro, Sava Pro, Silentium Pro, Tekton Pro, Trajan Pro, Voluta Script Pro, Warnock Pro, Waters Titling Pro, Web Type Pro,
OK, well…fine. Then the next problem was Greek letters. Those seem to be…much more difficult to find? (I would have thought the opposite.)
Is there some tool for searching for these glyphs within Adobe's fonts? The Type Reference Guide says "Complete glyph complement pdfs can be
viewed or downloaded from the Adobe web site at www.adobe.com/type," but I can't seem to find an easy way to get to them (I guess the Flash interface sort of works? Is there a better one?).
Our house style currently uses Adobe's Utopia Std and Univers LT Std. For text in Utopia, when hunting for these glyphs, I had usually been in the habit of finding the glyphs in Times New Roman, and not worrying about it. Today I realized that that's not Adobe's Times New Roman (kind of a rude awakening), it's actually Monotype:Times New Roman Regular:Version 3.05 (Microsoft). So then I installed Adobe's Times New Roman MT Std and Times LT Std families, but they don't have the glyphs either.
Is there a recommended Adobe font that has these glyphs that is appropriate to substitute for Utopia? For Univers?
Maybe the more general question is whether there is mapping of "What font should I look in to find somewhat similar-looking glyphs when Adobe fonts are missing glyphs"?
Looking through the Type Reference Guide.pdf (or the printed 3rd edition reference library) is frustrating. I suppose I probably want a font with the icon for "Greek monotonic" or maybe "Greek polytonic" , but those seem to be encoded as special glyphs that are tough to search for.
If I search for the word "Greek," it looks like my only choices are these 7: Arno Pro, Garamond Premiere Pro, Lithos Pro, Minion Pro, Myriad Pro, Universal Std, and Warnock Pro.
Is that right, or am I missing some?
is this situation likely to improve anytime soon? Am I better off finding non-Adobe sources for these glyphs?
Utopia is a Robert Slimbach Adobe original, so I guess there are no other sources.
Univers is from Linotype, but they don't seem to sell and variants with greek glyphs?
Maybe the answer is that the folks who picked our house style made bad decisions. Though I'm really not sure? Sorry this is so long. Any thoughts much-appreciated. Thanks.

Hi John,
Lots of questions. I'll try to address them as best I as can.
Is there some tool for searching for these glyphs within Adobe's fonts?
You can use the "Character Viewer" available in Mac OS X. The only requirement is that the font(s) need to be installed.
The Type Reference Guide says "Complete glyph complement pdfs can be viewed or downloaded from the Adobe web site at www.adobe.com/type," but I can't seem to find an easy way to get to them
Just go to any face page, e.g. Minion Pro Medium Subhead. There you'll find a link named Glyph Complement which will direct you to the PDF file.
Is there a recommended Adobe font that has these glyphs that is appropriate to substitute for Utopia?
No, not really. Kepler has a similar style, but it's also an Std family, not Pro, so it won't have the characters you need.
For Univers?
No. The closest would be Myriad as they're both sans-serif. But the styles are different: Univers is a (neo)grotesque while Myriad is a humanist.
If I search for the word "Greek," it looks like my only choices are these 7: Arno Pro, Garamond Premiere Pro, Lithos Pro, Minion Pro, Myriad Pro, Universal Std, and Warnock Pro. Is that right, or am I missing some?
There's also Hypatia Sans, Sava, and Adobe Text (the latter is currently only avaialble as a CS5 registration incentive). List of fonts containing Greek.
The number of choices seems small when compared to the total number of font families available in the library. But Adobe was actually one of the first foundries that started including Greek and Cyrillic characters in their fonts on a regular basis. When you look at the Adobe Originals list you start seeing the trend.
is this situation likely to improve anytime soon?
Yes. All our newest families are Pro and include Greek and Cyrillic -- that's basically our minimum now -- and there are updates to existing families in the pipeline. But this will still take some time to become available.
Utopia is a Robert Slimbach Adobe original, so I guess there are no other sources.
Adobe actually donated Utopia fonts to the community, and while there has been some derivative work that extended it to cover Vietnamese and Cyrillic, AFAIK no one as ever designed the Greek glyphs.
Univers is from Linotype, but they don't seem to sell and variants with greek glyphs?
I think you're right. But I see they have a font named Utah WGL that may suit your needs.

  • 10g won't recognize ellipsis and other special characters.

I'm trying to insert data into both VARCHAR2 and CLOB columns that contains characters such as ellipsis and other special characters. Oracle doesn't recognize the characters and just converts it to garbage. Is there a way to make Oracle easily recognize these characters?
For example, it won't recognize the following ellipsis in the string:
"Here we are … right now."

My bad...I did look at the national character set instead.
When I performed theq query you posted, I got the following:
    NLS_CHARACTERSET
    WE8MSWIN1252
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET
    AL16UTF16
I hope this new information helps. Also, the tool involved is SQL *Plus, but I'm currently concentrated on getting the insert to work via JDBC. Thanks in advance.

  • Capturing returns and other special characters

    Greetings,
I'm curious to know what is 'normally' done to capture
returns and other special characters from textareas. I want my user
to be able to insert 'control' characters into the text area to
allow them to provide some structure to the information they're
entering. At the moment, I'm processing the text char by char and
working out if it's an 'enter' or whatever, then appending a
'<br />' to the string before I store it and so on.
Is there a more established way to do this sort of
    thing?

Use the replace function to replace either chr(10) or chr(13)
with a break tag. It's using cold fusion functions to accomplish
the same thing you appear to be doing manually.

  • E72: Swedish and other special characters not work...

When I send mail through MfE, swedish and other special characters do not reach the recipient, they are just ignored. No blanks or nothing. Every word with a swedish character ends up one letter short.
Before the firmware upgrade this was intermittent, happening only on about half of my mails.
Now I upgraded yesterday, and it seems the problem is now permanent.
Have seen similar posts from E75 and E90 owners, their problems seem to have been fixed by newer firmware.
Our setup is: Exchange 2003, Portwise authentication.
All other phone models work fine, like iPhone, E71 etc.
    /Sebastian

After some testing I found out that if I use swedish chars in the subject line, it works fine. Even in the mail body.
If I don't use swedish chars in the subject, they won't work in the body. I either get garbage or nothing where the swedish chars should be.
The problem doesn't exist at all in my private IMAP mail account.
Could someone who uses Mail for Exchange and have special chars in their alphabet (swedish, finnish, german, hungarian etc) pls tell me how it's working out for you?

  • Storing carriage return and other special characters in a TestStand variable and passing to LabVIEW

I am using TestStand step to call a LabVIEW VI that writes commands to a serial device.  The device expects a carriage return at the end of the command.  I can create a constant string in TestStand with the carriage return, e.g., "ATA\x0D" and pass that to a LabVIEW string control which shows ATA\r and the VI works properly.
To provide consistency and flexibility in my code, I want to store the terminator character(s) in a TestStand variable.  However, when I try to use an expression to create the command string, i.e. "ATA" + "Locals.Terminator", where Locals.Terminator is set to "\x0D", my LabVIEW VI string control shows "ATA\\x0D" which doesn't work.  And when I try Locals.Terminator set to "\r", the LabVIEW string control shows "ATA\\r" which doesn't work either.
Is there a way to store special characters in a TestStand variable and pass them to LabVIEW as special characters?  I saw in another post that if you edit the TestStand variable by pressing Cntl-Enter, it will store  the newline \n properly and it can be sent to LabVIEW - that works for me as well for \n.  But  I need to send a carriage return.
I've attached my test sequence and the corresponding LabVIEW VI with a string control.

    Hi Hans,
Thanks for your detailed explanation and examples.  In TestStand, change the String parameter's String Type to Binary String instead of ASCII.  Then it will pass the desired value.

  • Patterns and other special swatches missing.

    Hi there!
I know there must be a very simple explanation for my issue but I can't figure out why, in some plain AI files I can't access some of the special swatches such as patterns, textures, etc; their palletes appear empty with the little crossed pencil icon meaning 'not editable'...I know all the presets are installed and I've used them occasionally, it is just that I can't determine what is it that makes them 'loadable' or not. Btw, I'm using Illustrator Cs3, on a Imac running Tiger 10.5 but I'm positive this is not a software related issue, it already happened now and then with Cs2 and even on a Pc.
    Thank you
    JMonteiro

Looks like I'm about to sort this out...Maybe I just wasn't using the right palletes to load the swatches I wanted...you see, sometimes it gets a bit confusing finding your way around among so many! Just a while ago a tried loading the pattern swatches from the little icon on the left bottom corner of the swatches pallete and it worked fine! Textures came up that way too so it looks like I was just looking in the wrong places! Sorry to take yr time.
    Cheers

  • LAMBDA and other SPECIAL CHARACTERS

    Hello,
Does someone know how to put in a lambda character? I have Framemaker 7.0 and the document I'm working on is non-structured. OS is Win XP Pro. All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

    Hi Bear,
You could also try using the Equations pallete to insert the lambda symbol in para text. Here are the steps you could try:
    1. Place the cursor where you want to insert the character.
    2. Select Special > Equations
    3. From the Equations drop-down list, select New Small eqaution. An Eq frame is added with a ? mark.
    4. Click the lambda symbol from the buttons in the Equations palette. ? is replaced by the lambda symbol.
    5. Shrinkwrap the equation shortcut Esc m p.
This should insert just the lambda character inline with the para text.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to pack() twice without flicker (and other fireworks)? (with SCCEE :)

Hello, there is this "feature", that sometimes you have to call pack() twice to pack tightly around the subject. This has been discussed here before, some people call it a bug, camickr said he did not know why, this is just how the layout worked. OK, the problem with calling it twice, is that the user notices the window flicker.
The flicker does not happen every time (or, better say, we do not see it every time), that's why I put the whole thing in the loop in the SCCEE.
Even worse, this does not happen right now in my program, but in the SCCEE, there is also a boatload of exceptions (not mine), sometimes pack() even called twice does not work, and eventually, the whole loop just hangs.
(So, by Murphy's law, these things will eventually happen in my big program too)
Question: how do I resize a JFrame tightly around a JTextPane, without the flicker (and other special effects)? Here is the code, if you look carefully, you can tell the window momentarily went taller, before going shorter again - does not always happen, if you are lucky it will do this a few times before it hangs altogether... I do this many times in myprogram, as the user moves things around, they really notice.
If I call setVisible(false) before the pack()s and then back to true after, then of course, the flicker is even worse.
Thank you for any suggestion of a workaround... Mark

I tidied up your program a little, and you're right - I can see the window size flicker a little. It's very pronounced with only 1 call to pack(), and less so with 2 calls to pack(), but still noticeable.

                        frame.setContentPane(txt);
                        frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);

  • Things to know before building a Mega 651 (and other things you should know afte

Okay, following hot on the heels of the "things to know" series on Mega 180 and 865, I thought I'd just chip in with this short post on what you should know before splashing out on a nice budget Mega 651
    PROCESSOR SUPPORT:
The official list of supported CPUs can be found here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_slm_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=431&kind=4
Basically the ageing SiS651 chipset does not support Celeron / P4 cpus above 533mhz, and does NOT support the newer "Prescott" core cpus
    Celeron > 400Mhz FSB
    P4 Northwood > 533mhz FSB (512kb L2 cache)
    MEMORY:
Basically to add to what is listed in the 865 "things to know"; from my own experience of using MSI motherboards in the past, ALWAYS use good quality branded memory, as using cheaper "generic" types inevitably leads to major problems. I know for a fact that Crucial, Kingston and Samsung types work well in MSI motherboards, and you should be okay with other high-end brands like Corsair and Geil.
    DRIVERS:
DON'T bother using MSI LiveUpdate! The drivers provided on the cd supplied will work, but if you wish to download the latest drivers, you will find them here:
    http://download.sis.com/
    Download and install the:
Chipset Software > SiS AGP (Gart) Driver
IGP Graphics Drivers > SiS650 and 740 series
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
    for Realtek AC97 Audio drivers
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?lineid=1&famid=3&series=16&Software=True
    For Realtek Onboard Network interface
The modem drivers supplied on the CD should work, I really don't know much about them as I have never used them (sorry). Failing that, if you are connected to the internet, Windows Update should be able to find them for you.
    OPERATING SYSTEM SUPPORT
MSI state that only Windows XP is supported on Mega 651 (and other Mega barebones). Other versions of Windows (98, ME, 2000) will work provided you have drivers for hardware devices, all of which are provided on the install CD or from the links supplied above.
You'll find that earlier versions of Windows won't have the drivers for the built-in card reader, so you may have to do a "google" search to get them. On my Mega 651, they are listed in Device Manager as "OEI-USB" devices.
If you haven't already got Windows XP then I suggest you consider upgrading at the earliest opportunity; Microsoft themselves no longer support Win 98 / ME and most new software is being designed to work only with Windows XP
Please note that MSI do NOT supply or support drivers for Linux; if you wish to attempt to install Linux on a Mega 651 (or other Mega PC model) you will need to obtain drivers yourself. The remote and LCD display functions will also not be available under Linux, unless some clever bod has developed drivers to do so.
    MEGA RADIO AND LCD DISPLAY:
Download the Mega LiveUpdate for Mega 651 from here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/software/swr/spt_swr_detail.php?UID=431&kind=4
This will update your MEGA Radio program, update the BlueBird HIFi module firmware and allow you to set a "greeting" displayed on the LCD display when you switch on HiFi mode. Apart from that the LCD display serves NO other purpose in PC mode.
After updating the firmware, you should power off your Mega 651, unplug the mains power cord for a few seconds then reconnect and restart for changes to take place.
    OTHER MSI SOFTWARE:
If you REALLY must try out MSI Media Center III, it does work on the Mega 651, but I don't think the remote will work correctly.
Although PCAlert 4 has been reported to work on the Mega 651 - having read the numerous problems most users have, I don't advise installing it. If you do get it to work correctly, unlike on the Mega 180 and 865, it will not display temps or fan speeds on the LCD display, as this feature only works on the 180 and 865, as they use diferent LCD displays.
    EXPANSION CARDS:
Same as with other Megas, you get 1 AGP and 1 PCI slot.
The AGP slot only supports up to 4x cards; a faster card will work, but only at 4x.
Space is limited, if you decide to fit a PCI TV tuner card, you will be limited as to which AGP card you can fit. A full length card is probably not recommended, and a model with a slimline (or even passive) heatsink would be best.
A better alternative would be to go for a VGA card with built in TV tuner, such as MSI TV5200-VTDF128 or an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder card (ATI AIW is supported in WinXP MCE05)
    ON-BOARD VGA
The SiS651 chipset is pretty old now, and the on-board SiS650 VGA is not up to playing any of the latest games, as it is only DirectX 7.0 compliant and does not support Hardware Texture & Lighting. However, it is adequate for playing back DVDs as it supports hardware acceleration (in PowerDVD for example), and general video output is decent. The maximum shared video memory size is 64mb.
The Mega 651 does NOT feature TV-out as standard. You can however either buy an AGP video card which includes TV-out feature, or the Mega TV-out card (availble in UK from www.dabs.com). Please note, this card is ONLY for Mega 651, and does NOT work with the 865 model. (The 180 does however, thanks to nforce2 chipset, support TV-out as standard)
    ON-BOARD AUDIO
The Realtek ALC650 AC97 audio codec offers 5.1 surround sound (with suitable speakers of course  ) as well as SP-DIF for digital output.
The sound quality is quite reasonable; i'm currently listening to MP3s through a set of Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers, and its certainly good enough for me.
There are three audio connectors on the rear, they default to:
    GREEN - Front speakers
    BLUE - Line In
    PINK - Mic
To connect surround sound speakers correctly, you need to use the Realtek audio configuration tool (located in the Taskbar by the clock). Set the speaker config to 4 or 6 channel (5.1) and then click on the boxes to the right to configure the rear ports correctly
    GREEN - Front speakers
    BLUE - Rear Speakers
PINK - Subwoofer / Centre Speaker
NOTE: If you do decide you want to install a PCI soundcard, be aware that you will lose the Radio function in PC mode, and for audio output in Hi-Fi mode you will need to reconnect audio plugs from your soundcard to onboard sockets. The Hi-Fi mode and Radio only work with the onboard audio.
    POWER SUPPLY
All the Mega series barebones come with a 200w PSU. Don't even think about upgrading to a higher output type, as the Mega PSU is a non-standard type. A standard ATX PSU will NOT physically fit inside the Mega case. Besides which, the Mega series have a special connector which powers the Bluebird hi-fi module and on-board sound when the PC is off. And there is a special Molex power connector for the CD/DVD drive, also for that to be used when PC is off.
    WINDOWS XP MCE 2005
Media Center 2005 requires a DirectX 8.1 / 9.0 compliant video card with a minimum of 64mb RAM, 128mb RAM is recommended, however, for best performance. So you will need an AGP card, because SiS do not provide any MCE-compatible drivers. The TV@anywhere TV tuner (MS8606-10) and Mega TV Tuner (MS8606-40) are not supported by MCE05, because MCE2005 requires a TV card that will provide a direct MPEG2 stream, which a PVR card such as the Hauppage PVR MCE series can do (as a hardware card, MSIs card are software only and rely on drivers to do MPEG encoding), or a dedicated DVB-T card which receives an MPEG2 signal over the air.
    MEGA 651 REMOTE
If you fit an MSI TV@anywhere card to your Mega 651, the Mega remote can be used to control the MSIPVS software, providing you use the remote receiver supplied with the TV@nywhere card. The Mega remote is designed to work natively with the MSI Media Center, and MSI Mega Radio programs only.
If you wish to program the remote to operate other programs within windows, then you will need a program called Girder, and the accompanying MSI plugin, kindly provided by nathan. please see his sticky thread for more info, about his plugin, and how to obtain Girder.

  • Difference of profit center between ledger 0 (FI-GL) and other ledgers

    Hello all,
I have a problem of discrepency between FI-GL and other ledgers (8A and specific ledgers) on profit center data.
    My case :
I post an incoming invoice with MIRO, this generates a FI posting Vendor to Expenses :
Account                Profit center               Origin of profit center
Expense                3630                           coming from the cost center
Vendor                  3630                         FI substitution rule that puts the expense line profit center on the vendor line profit center
Postings on other ledgers are also created automatically in real time :
    - a posting in ledger 8A for profit center accounting
    - postings in specific special ledgers we have
In these postings we find this
Account                Profit center               Origin of profit center
Expense                3630                           coming from the cost center
    Vendor                  3637                        ?
This problem appears only on Vendor or Customer line items.
    My questions :
Why is the Vendor line item profit center is different between FI-GL and other ledger ? In my GCF3 customization, I have asked to transfer my profit center form FI-GL to my specific ledgers directly, so why isn't this happening ?
If the profit center is not coming from the FI-GL posting, where is it coming from ?
Thanks all for your answers !
